Bifunctional ligand Co metal-organic framework derived heterostructured Co-based nanocomposites as oxygen electrocatalysts toward rechargeable zinc-air batteries

Rational construction of efficient and robust bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts is key but challenging for the widespread application of rechargeable zinc-air batteries (ZABs). Herein, bifunctional ligand Co metal-organic frameworks were first explored to fabricate a hybrid of heterostructured CoOx/Co nanoparticles anchored on a carbon substrate rich in CoNx sites (CoOx/Co@CoNC) via a one-step pyrolysis method. Such a unique heterostructure provides abundant CoNx and CoOx/Co active sites to drive oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), respectively. Besides, their positive synergies facilitate electron transfer and optimize charge/mass transportation. Consequently, the obtained CoOx/Co@CoNC exhibits a superior ORR activity with a higher half-wave potential of 0.88 V than Pt/C (0.83 V vs. RHE), and a comparable OER performance with an overpotential of 346 mV at 10 mA cm-2 to the commercial RuO2. The assembled ZAB using CoOx/Co@CoNC as a cathode catalyst displays a maximum power density of 168.4 mW cm-2, and excellent charge-discharge cyclability over 250 h at 5 mA cm-2. This work highlights the great potential of heterostructures in oxygen electrocatalysis and provides a new pathway for designing efficient bifunctional oxygen catalysts toward rechargeable ZABs.

Highly-exposed copper and ZIF-8 interface enables synthesis of hydrocarbons by electrocatalytic reduction of CO2

Electrochemical reduction of CO2 (CO2RR) to fuels and chemicals is a promising route to close the anthropogenic carbon cycle for sustainable society. The Cu-based catalysts in producing high-value hydrocarbons feature unique superiorities, yet challenges remain in achieving high selectivity. In this work, Cu@ZIF-8 NWs with highly-exposed Cu nanowires (Cu NWs) and ZIF-8 interface are synthesized via a surfactant-assisted method. Impressively, Cu@ZIF-8 NWs exhibit excellent stability and a high Faradaic efficiency of 57.5% toward hydrocarbons (CH4 and C2H4) at a potential of -0.7 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode. Computational calculations combining with experiments reveal the formation of Cu and ZIF-8 interface optimizes the adsorption of reaction intermediates, particularly stabilizing the formation of *CHO, thereby enabling efficient preference for hydrocarbons. This work highlights the potential of constructing metals and MOFs heterogeneous interfaces to enhance catalytic properties and offers valuable insights for the design of highly efficient CO2RR catalysts.

Mixed-valent cobalt phosphate/borophene nanohybrids for efficient electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction

Developing efficient, low-cost, non-precious and stable electrocatalyst is necessary for sustainable electrocatalytic water splitting. Recently, borophene has emerged as a novel two-dimensional material with exciting properties. Although several researchers have theoretically predicted its applicability towards effective electrocatalytic water splitting, studies on its practical applications are still limited. In this regard, a mixed-valent cobalt phosphate/borophene nanohybrid (BCoPi) was synthesized using hydrothermal method, and its activity towards oxygen evolution reaction (OER) was systematically studied. The electron-deficient nature of borophene enables activation of catalytic sites and facilitates electron transport owing to its highly conductive nature. It can act as a proton acceptor along with phosphate groups, as well as provide multiple secondary active sites in addition to Co, breaking the scaling relation of OER. For BCoPi, achieving a current density of 50 mA cm-2, 100 mA cm-2 and 500 mA cm-2 requires an overpotential of 337 mV, 357 mV and 401 mV, respectively, in an alkaline medium, that are superior to pristine cobalt phosphate (CoPi). It also exhibits low Tafel slope of 61.81 mV dec-1, suggesting faster OER kinetics and excellent long-term stability. This study will extend the development and application of borophene-based heterostructures for highly active and stable electrocatalysts for various applications.

C 3 N based heterobilayers: a potential platform to explore optoelectronic and thermoelectric properties

We theoretically investigate the full thermal transport and optoelectronic features of two estab- lished van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures based on the recently synthesized monolayer of C 3 N using the machinery of the Boltzmann transport and GW+BSE calculations. Among the structures, C 3 N/hBN tends to exhibit a small indirect gap semiconducting nature with an admixture of com- paratively higher 'flat-and-dispersiveness' and band degeneracy in the conduction band minima. A nearly comparable high thermoelectric power factor is observed for both the charge carriers at 300 K and 900 K at specific concentrations. The other material, C 3 N/graphene however maintains a low Seebeck coefficient with large electrical conductivity which correctly manifests its metallic character. A combination of low atomic mass, higher anharmonicity and longer lifetime of acous- tic phonons in C 3 N/hBN results in an intermediate lattice thermal conductivity (196 Wm -1 K -1 ) at room temperature as compared to its constituent monolayers. Under heavy n-type doping, C 3 N/hBN hetero-bilayer displays a figure of merit value of 0.13 (and 0.36) at room temperature (and at 900 K). As per the optical signatures are concerned, C 3 N/hBN reveals two distinct absorp- tion peaks with a high electron-hole quasiparticle interaction energy correction. Besides both the structures display a much better absorption throughout the spectrum compared to graphene. We expect these findings will motivate future research in designing thermoelectric and optoelectronic materials made of light mass, earth-abundant and non-toxic elements.

Controlled three-dimensional leaf-like NiCoO2@NiCo layered double hydroxide heterostructures for oxygen evolution electrocatalysts in rechargeable Zn-air batteries

Rechargeable zinc-air batteries (ZABs) have garnered attention as a viable choice for large-scale energy storage due to their advantageous characteristics, such as high energy density and cost-effectiveness. Strategies aimed at improving the kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) through advanced electrocatalytic materials or structural designs can significantly enhance the efficiency and longevity of ZABs. In this study, we introduce a three-dimensional (3D) leaf-vein system heterojunction architecture. In this structure, NiCoO2 nanowire arrays form the central vein, surrounded by an outer leaf composed of NiCo layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets. All these components are integrated onto a substrate made of Ni foam. Notably, when tested in an alkaline environment, the NiCoO2@NiCo LDH exhibited an overpotential of 272 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2, and extended durability evaluations over 12 h underscored its robustness at 99.76 %. The rechargeable ZABs achieved a peak power density of 149 mW cm-2. Furthermore, the NiCoO2@NiCo LDH demonstrated stability by maintaining high round-trip efficiencies throughout more than 680 cycles (equivalent to 340 h) under galvanostatic charge-discharge cycling at 5 mA cm-2. The leaf-vein system heterojunction significantly increased the active sites of the catalysts, facilitating charge transport, improving electronic conductivity, and enhancing overall stability.

Efficient photoelectrochemical real textile wastewater detoxification using photoanodes of C3N4-BiVO4

Photoelectrochemical systems utilizing solar energy have garnered significant attention for their sustainability in remediating contaminated water. This study focuses on advancing photoanode development through the utilization of carbon nitrides (C3N4) and bismuth vanadate (BiVO4), two promising semiconductor materials renowned for their efficient electron-hole pair separation leading to enhanced photocatalytic activity. Four distinct materials were synthesized and compared: BiVO4 over C3N4, C3N4 over BiVO4, and pristine BiVO4 and C3N4. Upon electrochemical analysis, the C3N4-BiVO4 heterostructure exhibited the highest photoelectrocatalytic charge transfer constant, mobility, and lifetime of charge carriers. Capitalizing on these exceptional properties, the composite was applied to remove organic matter real effluent from the textile industry. The photoelectrodegradation of the effluent demonstrated substantial removal of Total Organic Carbon (TOC) and the generation of low toxicity degradation products, accompanied by low energy consumption. The compelling results underscore the high potential of the synthesized C3N4-BiVO4 heterostructure for industrial applications, particularly in addressing environmental challenges associated with textile industry effluents.

The van der Waals interaction and absorption and electron circular dichroism spectra of two-dimensional bilayer stacked structures

van der Waals (vdW) heterojunctions based on two-dimensional (2D) materials, graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), are a research hotspot for future optoelectronic and exciton devices. Bond-free vdW interactions are key to 2D material heterojunction device reliability and stability. However, most of the current research on 2D stacked materials heterostructures mainly focuses on optical properties and electronic structure. Furthermore, vdW interaction in 2D heterostructures is studied and understood on the basis of qualitative description and energy ranges from the literature. There are few studies on the nature of vdW interaction based on practical calculations of the quantitative strength and microscopic mechanism of vdW interaction between 2D stacked materials. Therefore, this paper explores the vdW interaction between 2D material stacked bilayer structures, including bilayer graphene, graphene/MoS2 and graphene/WS2 heterostructures, focusing on quantitative analysis of the energy components of the vdW interaction. We first visually observed the weak interactions in the three stacked bilayer structures through noncovalent interaction (NCI) analysis, and found that the interactions are concentrated in the binding region between the two-layer structures. We mainly decomposed the weak interaction energy in the three 2D material bilayer heterostructures through energy decomposition analysis based on the force field (EDA-FF) method and obtained the energy values and proportions of the three components-electrostatic energy, exchange repulsion energy and dispersion energy of the total binding energy between the 2D stacked bilayer structures. The vdW interaction energy is the sum of the exchange repulsion energy and dispersion energy, and the dispersion energy of the vdW interaction accounts for more than 60% of the binding energy of the weak interaction between the 2D bilayer stacked structures. The vdW strengths in the bilayer structures are on the order of 177.07, 123.85, and 133.93 kJ/mol, approxmately 1-2 orders of magnitude larger than the classically defined vdW energies of 0.1-10 kJ/mol. Furthermore, we calculate the density of states of the three 2D stacked structures, and further obtained HOMO-LOMO information; to further understand the electronic structures of the graphene/MoS2 and graphene/WS2 heterostructures, we calculated their optical absorption spectra and electron circular dichroism (ECD) spectra. According to the calculation results, the two heterostructures have strong absorption peaks in the visible region, and the charge transfer forms at the strong absorption peak can be determined according to the charge transfer diagram. The ECD spectra indicate that the configurations of the graphene/MoS2 and graphene/WS2 heterostructures have large chirality. Our work contributes to a deeper understanding of the nature of the weak interactions and optical properties in 2D stacked materials, which plays a fundamental role in promoting the construction of stable 2D heterostructure configurations and the development of multifunctional 2D devices. The research is conducive to further promoting the basic research and practical development of strong optoelectronic and excitonic 2D heterojunctions devices.

NiFe-layered double hydroxide/CoP2@MnP heterostructures of clustered flower nanowires on MXene-modified nickel foam for overall water-splitting

Exploiting efficient and economical electrocatalysts is indispensable to promoting the sluggish kinetics of overall water-splitting. Herein, we designed a phosphate reaction and two-step hydrothermal method to construct a 3D porous clustered flower-like heterogeneous structure of NiFe-layered double hydroxide (NiFe) and CoP2@MnP (CMP) grown in-situ on MXene-modified nickel foam (NF) substrate (denoted as NiFe/CMP/MX), with favorable kinetics. Density functional theory calculations (DFT) demonstrate that the self-driven transfer of heterojunction charges causes electron redistribution of the catalyst, and optimizes the electron transfer rate of the active site and the d-band center near the Fermi level, thereby reducing the adsorption energy of H and O reaction intermediates (H*, OH*, OOH*). As expected, the combination of CMP and NiFe with naturally conductive MXene forms a strong chemical and electron synergistic effect, which enables the synthesized NiFe/CMP/MX heterogeneous structure exhibits good activity for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with a low overpotential of 200 mV and 126 mV at 10 mA cm-2, respectively. Furthermore, the overpotential of 1.58 V is enough to drive a current density of 10 mA cm-2 in a two-electrode configuration, which is better than noble metals (RuO2(+)//Pt/C(-)) (1.68 V).

Modulating the electronic structure of Mo2C/MoP heterostructure to boost hydrogen evolution reaction in a wide pH range

Interface engineering is an effective strategy for the design of electrochemical catalysts with attractive performance for hydrogen evolution reaction. Herein, the Molybdenum carbide/molybdenum phosphide (Mo2C/MoP) heterostructure deposited on nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P) co-doped carbon substrate (Mo2C/MoP-NPC) is fabricated by one-step carbonization. The electronic structure of Mo2C/MoP-NPC is changed by optimizing the ratio of phytic acid and aniline. The calculation and experimental results also show that there is an electron interaction on the Mo2C/MoP interface, which optimizes the adsorption free energy of hydrogen (H) and improves the performance of hydrogen evolution reaction. Mo2C/MoP-NPC exhibits significant low overpotentials at 10 mA·cm-2 current density, 90 mV in 1 M KOH and 110 mV in 0.5 M H2SO4, respectively. In addition, it shows superior stability over a broad pH range. This research provides an effective method for the construction of novel heterogeneous electrocatalysts and is conducive to the development of green energy.

Carbon nanotubes encapsulating Pt/MoN heterostructures for superior hydrogen evolution

Achieving efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts to scale up electrochemical water splitting is desirable but remains a major challenge. Here, nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (NCNTs) loaded with PtNi/MoN electrocatalyst (PtNi/MoN@C) is synthesized by a simple strategy to obtain stronger interphase effects and significantly improve HER activity. The surface morphology of the materials is altered by Pt doping and the electronic structure of MoN is changed, which optimizing the electronic environment of the materials, shifting the binding energy and giving the materials a higher electrical conductivity, this ultimately leads to faster proton and electron transfer processes. The synergistic effect of Pt nanoparticles, MoN and the good combination with carbon leads to a high HER activity of 18 mV to reach 10 mA cm-2 in alkaline solution, outperforming that of the commercial Pt/C. Theoretical studies show that the heterostructures can efficiently enhance the electron transport and reduce the △GH*.

Interface engineering of transition metal-nitrogen-carbon by graphdiyne for boosting the oxygen reduction/evolution reactions: A computational study

Exploring high-efficiency electrocatalysts to boost the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is pivotal to the large-scale applications for clean and renewable energy technologies, such as fuel cells, water splitting, and metal-air batteries. Herein, by means of density functional theory (DFT) computations, we proposed a strategy to modulate the catalytic activity of transition metal-nitrogen-carbon catalysts through their interface engineering with graphdiyne (TMNC/GDY). Our results revealed that these hybrid structures exhibit good stability and excellent electrical conductivity. Especially, CoNC/GDY was identified as a promising bifunctional catalyst for ORR/OER with rather low overpotentials in acidic conditions according to the constant-potential energy analysis. Moreover, the volcano plots were established to describe the activity trend of the ORR/OER on TMNC/GDY using the adsorption strength of the oxygenated intermediates. Remarkably, the d-band center and charge transfer of the TM active sites can be utilized to correlate the ORR/OER catalytic activity and their electronic properties. Our findings not only suggested an ideal bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst, but also provided a useful strategy to obtain highly efficient catalysts by interface engineering of two-dimensional heterostructures.

Built-In Electric Field-Driven Ultrahigh-Rate K-Ion Storage via Heterostructure Engineering of Dual Tellurides Integrated with Ti3C2Tx MXene

Exploiting high-rate anode materials with fast K+ diffusion is intriguing for the development of advanced potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) but remains unrealized. Here, heterostructure engineering is proposed to construct the dual transition metal tellurides (CoTe2/ZnTe), which are anchored onto two-dimensional (2D) Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets. Various theoretical modeling and experimental findings reveal that heterostructure engineering can regulate the electronic structures of CoTe2/ZnTe interfaces, improving K+ diffusion and adsorption. In addition, the different work functions between CoTe2/ZnTe induce a robust built-in electric field at the CoTe2/ZnTe interface, providing a strong driving force to facilitate charge transport. Moreover, the conductive and elastic Ti3C2Tx can effectively promote electrode conductivity and alleviate the volume change of CoTe2/ZnTe heterostructures upon cycling. Owing to these merits, the resulting CoTe2/ZnTe/Ti3C2Tx (CZT) exhibit excellent rate capability (137.0 mAh g-1 at 10 A g-1) and cycling stability (175.3 mAh g-1 after 4000 cycles at 3.0 A g-1, with a high capacity retention of 89.4%). More impressively, the CZT-based full cells demonstrate high energy density (220.2 Wh kg-1) and power density (837.2 W kg-1). This work provides a general and effective strategy by integrating heterostructure engineering and 2D material nanocompositing for designing advanced high-rate anode materials for next-generation KIBs.

Recent developments and perspectives of MXene-Based heterostructures in photocatalysis

Energy crises and environmental degradation are serious in recent years. Inexhaustible solar energy can be used for photocatalytic hydrogen production or CO2 reduction to reduce CO2 emissions. At present, the development of efficient photocatalysts is imminent. MXene as new two-dimensional (2D) layered material, has been used in various fields in recent years. Based on its high conductivity, adjustable band gap structure and sizable specific surface area, the MXene is beneficial to hasten the separation and reduce the combination of photoelectron-hole pairs in photocatalysis. Nevertheless, the re-stacking of layers because of the strong van der Waals force and hydrogen bonding interactions seriously hinder the development of MXene material as photocatalysts. By contrast, the MXene-based heterostructures composed of MXene nanosheets and other materials not only effectively suppress the re-stacking of layers, but also show the superior synergistic effects in photocatalysis. Herein, the recent progress of the MXene-based heterostructures as photocatalysts in energy and environment fields is summarized in this review. Particularly, new synthetic strategies, morphologies, structures, and mechanisms of MXene-based heterostructures are highlighted in hydrogen production, CO2 reduction, and pollutant degradation. In addition, the structure-activity relationship between the synthesis strategy, components, morphology and structure of MXene-based heterostructures, and their photocatalytic properties are elaborated in detail. Finally, a summary and the perspectives on improving the application study of the heterostructures in photocatalysis are presented.

Label-free "signal-off" PEC aptasensor for determination of kanamycin based on 3D nanoflower-like FeIn2S4/CdS Z-scheme heterostructures

Highly photoactive 3D nanoflower-like FeIn2S4/CdS heterostructures were synthesized by hydrothermal treatment and low-temperature cation exchange. The FeIn2S4/CdS displayed 14.5 times signal amplification in contrast to FeIn2S4 alone. It was applied as a photoactive substrate to construct a label-free photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensor for ultrasensitive determination of kanamycin (KAN). Under the optimal conditions, the constructed PEC aptasensor displayed a wide linear range (5.0 × 10-4 ~ 5.0 × 101 ng mL-1) and a low detection limit (S/N = 3) of 40.01 fg mL-1. This study provides some constructive insights for preparation of advanced photoactive materials and exhibits great potential for quantitative determination of antibiotics in foods and environmental samples.

CdS/TiO2 nano hybrid heterostructured materials for superior hydrogen production and gas sensor applications

In efforts to minimize environmental pollution and carbon-based gas emissions, photocatalytic hydrogen production and sensing applications at ambient temperature are important. This research reports on the development of new 0D/1D materials based on TiO₂ nanoparticles grown onto CdS hetersturctured nanorods via two-stage facile synthesis. The titanate nanoparticles when loaded onto CdS surfaces at an optimized concentration (20 mM), exhibited superior photocatalytic hydrogen production (21.4 mmol/h/g_cat). The optimized nanohybrid was recycled for 6 cycles up to 4 h, indicating its excellent stabity for a prolonged period. Also, the photoelectrochemical water oxidation in alkaline medium was investigated to offer the optimized CRT-2 composite with 1.91 mA/cm²@0.8 V vs. RHE (0 V vs. Ag/AgCl) that was used for effective room-temperature NO₂ gas detection exhibiting a higher response (69.16%) to NO₂ (100 ppm) at room temperature at the lowest detection limit of ∼118 ppb than the pristine counterparts. Further, NO₂ gas sensing performance of CRT-2 sensor was increased using UV light (365 nm) activation energy. Under the UV light, the sensor exhibited a remarkable gas sensing response quick response/recovery times (68/74), excellent long-term cycling stability, and significant selectivity to NO₂ gas. Due to high porosity and surface area values of CdS (5.3), TiO₂ (35.5), and CRT-2 (71.5 m²/g), excellent photocatalytic H₂ production and gas sensing of CRT-2 is ascribed to morphology, synergistic effect, improved charge generation, and separation. Overall, 1D/0D CdS@TiO₂ is proved to be an efficient material for hydrogen production and gas detection.

Dataset of optical and electronic properties for MoS2-graphene vertical heterostructures and MoS2-graphene-Au heterointerfaces

The computational and experimental data presented in this paper refer to the research article "First-Principles Calculations Integrated with Experimental Optical and Electronic Properties for MoS2-graphene Heterostructures and MoS2-graphene-Au Heterointerfaces". The computational data includes structural information, electronic and optical properties, and data to calculate the work functions for various molybdenum disulfide and graphene heterostructures and their heterointerfaces with gold. The optical properties calculations include the frequency-dependent dielectric function, the refractive index, the reflectivity, the extinction coefficient, and the energy loss function. These properties were calculated using the independent particle approximation (IPA). As for the experimental optoelectronic properties, we measured photoluminescence spectra (optical), Raman spectra (vibrational), work function (surface electronic property), and local photoconductivity (semiconducting behavior) of graphene-MoS2 heterointerfaces in addition to individual graphene and MoS2 layers on gold. The variation in the exciton bands, the Raman bands, and in the average work function elucidated the semiconducting n-p junction behavior.

Modularized batch production of 12-inch transition metal dichalcogenides by local element supply

Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are regarded as pivotal semiconductor candidates for next-generation devices due to their atomic-scale thickness, high carrier mobility and ultrafast charge transfer. In analog to the traditional semiconductor industry, batch production of wafer-scale TMDs is the prerequisite to proceeding with their integrated circuits evolution. However, the production capacity of TMD wafers is typically constrained to a single and small piece per batch (mainly ranging from 2 to 4 inches), due to the stringent conditions required for effective mass transport of multiple precursors during growth. Here we developed a modularized growth strategy for batch production of wafer-scale TMDs, enabling the fabrication of 2-inch wafers (15 pieces per batch) up to a record-large size 12-inch wafers (3 pieces per batch). Each module, comprising a self-sufficient local precursor supply unit for robust individual TMD wafer growth, is vertically stacked with others to form an integrated array and thus a batch growth. Comprehensive characterization techniques, including optical spectroscopy, electron microscopy, and transport measurements unambiguously illustrate the high-crystallinity and the large-area uniformity of as-prepared monolayer films. Furthermore, these modularized units demonstrate versatility by enabling the conversion of as-produced wafer-scale MoS₂ into various structures, such as Janus structures of MoSSe, alloy compounds of MoS_2(1-x)Se_2x, and in-plane heterostructures of MoS₂-MoSe₂. This methodology showcases high-quality and high-yield wafer output and potentially enables the seamless transition from lab-scale to industrial-scale 2D semiconductor complementary to silicon technology.

Photocatalytic degradation of metronidazole and oxytetracycline by novel l-Arginine (C, N codoped)-TiO2/g-C3N4: RSM optimization, photodegradation mechanism, biodegradability evaluation

Removal of Metronidazole (MNZ) and Oxytetracycline (OTC) from wastewater by the prepared (C, N codoped)-TiO₂/g-C₃N₄ (Graphitic carbon nitride) was examined. l-Arginine (C, N codoped)-TiO₂ and l-Arginine (C, N codoped)-TiO₂/g-C₃N₄ photocatalysts were successfully synthesized through the sol-gel method, and optimal ratio of l-arginine:TiO₂, as well as l-arginine/TiO₂:g-C₃N₄, was determined by a kinetic study of photodegradation process. The maximum photocatalytic removal rate (0.065 min^-1 for MNZ removal) was observed using 1% l-Arginine-TiO₂/g-C₃N₄ (1:1) under visible light illumination, 2.2 and 6.5 times greater than those of 1% l-Arginine-TiO₂ and pure TiO₂, respectively. l-Arginine (1%)-TiO₂/g-C₃N₄ (1:1) (co-doped-TCN) was investigated using X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX), Photo-luminescence (PL), and Differential Reflectance Spectroscopy (DRS) as the best-performing photocatalyst. Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to study the effect of co-doped-TCN dosage (0.5-1.0 g/L), pH of simulated wastewater (4-10), initial concentration of MNZ and OTC (50-100 mg/L), and irradiation time (30-90 min for MNZ and 20-40 min for OTC) on removal efficiency of the antibiotics. Also, their optimum values were determined by RSM. The treated pharmaceutical wastewater showed high biodegradability features with 5-day biological oxygen demand/chemical oxygen demand (BOD₅/COD) of 0.51 and 0.46 after 40 and 100 min reaction for OTC and MNZ, respectively. The order of reactive species responsible for the photodegradation of pollutants was •O₂^─> •OH > h⁺>¹O₂. The effect of inorganic anions showed that all anions decreased the removal efficiency of both antibiotics in order of NO₃^─> Cl^─ >SO₄^2─>HPO₄^2─ >HCO₃^─ for MNZ and NO₃^─> SO₄^2─ > Cl^─ >HPO₄^2─ >HCO₃^─ for OTC. Also, introducing different oxidants improved the photocatalytic removal efficiency with the order of H₂O₂>K₂S₂O₈> KBrO₃.

Fabrication of hierarchical reduced graphene oxide decorated with core-shell Fe3O4@polypyrrole heterostructures for excellent electromagnetic wave absorption

The design of heterostructures with reasonable chemical composition and spatial structure is one of the effective strategies to achieve high performances electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption. Herein, reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets decorated with hollow core-shell Fe₃O₄@PPy (FP) microspheres have been prepared by the combination of hydrothermal method, in situ polymerization method, directional freeze-drying and hydrazine vapor reduction. FP acting as traps can consume EMW trapped into their interior through the magnetic and dielectric losses. RGO nanosheets forming the conductive network are served as multi-reflected layers. Moreover, the impedance matching is optimized by the synergistic effect between FP and rGO. As expected, the synthetic Fe₃O₄@PPy/rGO (FPG) composite shows excellent EMW absorption performances with the minimum reflect loss (RL_min) of -61.20 dB at 1.89 mm and the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 5.26 GHz at 1.71 mm. The excellent performances for the heterostructure are attributed to the synergistic effect of conductive loss, dielectric loss, magnetic loss, multiple reflection loss, and optimized impedance matching. This work provides a simple and effective strategy for the fabrication of lightweight, thin and high-performances EMW absorbing materials.

Design of molybdenum phosphide @ nitrogen-doped nickel-cobalt phosphide heterostructures for boosting electrocatalytic overall water splitting

Transition metal phosphides (TMPs) are one of the most promising alternatives to noble metal electrocatalysts, but so far their activity and stability still fall short of expectations. Here, we prepare nitrogen-doped nickel-cobalt phosphide (N-NiCoP) and molybdenum phosphide (MoP) heterostructures engineered on nickel foam (NF) with nanosheet structure by high-temperature annealing and low-temperature phosphorylation. Notably, heteroatomic N doping and heterostructures construction are achieved together through a simple co-pyrolysis method. The distinctive composition can synergistically promote the electron transfer, lower the reaction barriers, thus improving the catalytic performance. Therefore, the modified MoP@N-NiCoP requires low overpotentials of 43 mV and 232 mV to reach 10 mA cm^-2 current density for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) accompanied by satisfactory stability in 1 M KOH. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal the electron coupling and synergistic interfacial effects at the heterogeneous interface. This study provides a new strategy for heterogeneous electrocatalysts with elemental doping to promote hydrogen applications.

Laser flash photolysis study of Nb2O5/g-C3N4 heterostructures as efficient photocatalyst for molecular H2 evolution

Improvements of visible light activity, slow recombination rate, stability, and efficiency are major challenges facing photocatalyst technologies today. Utilizing heterostructures of g-C₃N₄ (bandgap ∼2.7eV) with Nb₂O₅ (bandgap ∼3.4eV) as an alternative materials for the first time, we tried to overcome such challenges in this work. Heterostructures of Nb₂O₅/g-C₃N₄ have been synthesized via hydrothermal technique. And then a time-resolved laser flash photolysis of those heterostructures has been analyzed, focusing on seeking how to improve photocatalytic efficiency for molecular hydrogen (H₂) evolution. The transient absorption spectra and the lifetime of charge carriers at different wavelengths have been observed for Nb₂O₅/g-C₃N₄, where g-C₃N₄ was used for a control. The role of hole scavenger (methanol) has also been investigated for the purpose of boosting charge trapping and H₂ evolution. The long lifetime of Nb₂O₅/g-C₃N₄ heterostructures (6.54165 μs) compared to g-C₃N₄ (3.1651897 μs) has successfully supported the increased H₂ evolution of 75 mmol/h.g. An enhancement in the rate of H₂ evolution (160 mmol/h.g) in the presence of methanol has been confirmed. This study not only deepens our understanding of the role of scavenger, but also enables a rigorous quantification of the recombination rate crucial for photocatalytic applications in relation with efficient H₂ production.

Copper indium sulfide quantum dots in photocatalysis

Since the advent of photocatalytic technology, scientists have been searching for semiconductor materials with high efficiency in solar energy utilization and conversion to chemical energy. Recently, the development of quantum dot (QD) photocatalysts has attracted much attention because of their unique characteristics: small size, quantum effects, strong surface activity, and wide photoresponse range. Among ternary chalcogenide semiconductors, CuInS₂ QDs are increasingly examined in the field of photocatalysis due to their high absorption coefficients, good matching of the absorption range with sunlight spectrum, long lifetimes of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and environmental sustainability. In this review paper, the structural and electronic properties, synthesis methods and various photocatalytic applications of CuInS₂ QDs are systematically expounded. The current research status on the photocatalytic properties of materials based on CuInS₂ QD is discussed combined with the existing modification approaches for the enhancement of their performances. Future challenges and new development opportunities of CuInS₂ QDs in the field of photocatalysis are then prospected.

Unraveling van der Waals epitaxy: A real-time in-situ study of MoSe2 growth on graphene/Ru(0001)

In the present work we investigate the growth of monolayer MoSe₂ on selenium-intercalated graphene on Ru(0001), a model layered heterostructure combining a transition metal dichalcogenide with graphene, using low energy electron microscopy and micro-diffraction. Real-time observation of MoSe₂ on graphene growth reveals the island nucleation dynamics at the nanoscale. Upon annealing, larger islands are formed by sliding and attachment of multiple nanometer-sized MoSe₂ flakes. Local micro-spot angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy reveals the electronic structure of the heterostructure, indicating that no charge transfer occurs within adjacent layers. The observed behavior is attributed to intercalation of Se at the graphene/Ru(0001) interface. The unperturbed nature of the proposed heterostructure therefore renders it as a model system for investigations of graphene supported TMD nanostructures.

A holistic review on the recent trends, advances, and challenges for high-precision room temperature liquefied petroleum gas sensors

Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), which is mainly composed of hydrocarbons, such as propane and butane, is a flammable gas that is considered a clean source of energy. Currently, the overwhelming use of LPG as fuel in vehicles, domestic settings, and industry has led to several incidents and deaths globally due to leakage. As a result, the appropriate detection of LPG is vital; thus, gas-sensing devices that can monitor this gas rapidly and accurately at room temperature, are required. This work reviews the current advances in LPG gas sensors, which operate at room temperature. The influences of the synthesis methods and parameters, doping, and use of catalysts on the sensing performance are discussed. The formation of heterostructures made from semiconducting metal oxides, polymers, and graphene-based materials, which enhance the sensor selectivity and sensitivity, is also discussed. The future trends and challenges confronted in the advancement of LPG room temperature operational gas sensors, and critical ideas concerning the future evolution of LPG gas sensors, are deliberated. Additionally, the advancements in the next-generation gas sensors, such as the wireless detection of LPG leakage, self-powered sensors driven by triboelectric/piezoelectric mechanisms, and artificial intelligent systems are also reviewed. This review further focuses on the use of smartphones to circumvent the use of costly instruments and paves the way for cost-efficient and portable monitoring of LPG. Finally, the approach of utilizing the Internet of Things (IoT) to detect/monitor the leakage of LPG has also been discussed, which will provide better alerts to the users and thus minimize the effects of leakages.

Ultrasensitive PEC cytosensor for breast cancer cells detection and inhibitor screening based on plum-branched CdS/Bi2S3 heterostructures

Breast cancer is the most common malignant tumor in women, which seriously threatens the life and health of patients. Therefore, facile and sensitive detection of human breast cancer cells is crucial for cancer diagnosis. In this work, plum-branched CdS/Bi₂S₃ heterostructures (CdS/Bi₂S₃ HSs) were synthesized under hydrothermal condition, whose photoelectrochemical (PEC) property and biocompatibility were scrutinously investigated. In parallel, a signal amplification strategy was designed based on immune recognition between epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) overexpressed on membrane of breast cancer cells MDA-MB-231 and its aptamer. Integration of the above together, a highly sensitive PEC cytosensor was developed for analysis of target MDA-MB-231 cells, exhibiting a wider linear range of 1 × 10² ∼ 3 × 10⁵ cells mL^-1 with a limit of detection (LOD) down to 6 cells mL^-1 (S/N = 3). Further, the biosensor was explored for anticancer drug (e.g., dacomitinib) screening by monitoring the variations in the PEC signals of the expressed EGFR upon drug stimulation. The obtained CdS/Bi₂S₃ HSs are identified as promising and feasible photoactive material for determination of cancer cells and drug screening in clinic and related research.

Morphology Engineering in Multicomponent Hollow Metal Chalcogenide Nanoparticles

Hollow metal chalcogenide nanoparticles are widely applicable in environmental and energy-related processes. Herein, we synthesized such particles with large compositional and morphological diversity by combining scanning probe block copolymer lithography with a Kirkendall effect-based sulfidation process. We explored the influence of temperature-dependent diffusion kinetics, elemental composition and miscibility, and phase boundaries on the resulting particle morphologies. Specifically, CoNi alloys form single-shell sulfides for the synthetic conditions explored because Co and Ni exhibit similar diffusion rates, while CuNi alloys form sulfides with various types of morphologies (yolk-shell, double-shell, and single-shell) because Cu and Ni have different diffusion rates. In contrast, Co-Cu heterodimers form hollow heterostructured sulfides with varying void numbers and locations depending on synthesis temperature and phase boundary. At higher temperatures, the increased miscibility of CoS₂ and CuS makes it energetically favorable for the heterostructure to adopt a single alloy shell morphology, which is rationalized using density functional theory-based calculations.

A rational design of titanium-based heterostructures as electrocatalyst for boosted conversion kinetics of polysulfides in Li-S batteries

Lithium-sulfur batteries have great potential for next-generation electrochemical storage systems owing to their high theoretical specific energy and cost-effectiveness. However, the shuttle effect of soluble polysulfides and sluggish multi-electron sulfur redox reactions has severely impeded the implementation of lithium-sulfur batteries. Herein, we prepared a new type of Ti₃C₂-TiO₂ heterostructure sandwich nanosheet confined within polydopamine derived N-doped porous carbon. The highly polar heterostructures sandwich nanosheet with a high specific surface area can strongly absorb polysulfides, restraining their outward diffusion into the electrolyte. Abundant boundary defects constructed by new types of heterostructures reduce the overpotential of nucleation and improve the nucleation/conversion redox kinetics of Li₂S. The Ti₃C₂-TiO₂@NC/S cathode exhibited discharge capacities of 1363, and 801 mAh g^-1 at the first and 100th cycles at 0.5C, respectively, and retained an ultralow capacity fade rate of 0.076% per cycle over 500cycles at 1.0C. This study provides a potential avenue for constructing heterostructure materials for electrochemical energy storage and catalysis.

Structural characterization, stability, and cytocompatibility study of chitosan BaTiO(3)@ZnO:Er heterostructures

New imaging agents are required in cancer diagnosis to enhance the diagnostic accuracy, classification, and therapeutic management of tumors. Nanomaterials have emerged as a promising alternative to developing new nanostructures with imaging applications. In this study, a heterostructure based on barium titanate (BT), zinc oxide (ZnO), and erbium (Er) was prepared and coated with Chitosan (CS) to investigate their stability and compatibility with biological systems. The structure, particle morphology, luminescence properties, stability, and cytotoxicity of different nanoparticles (NPs) were assessed. The results demonstrated the formation of a [BT@ZnO:Er]-CS heterostructure, which is consistent with the relative intensities and positions of peaks in the X-ray diffraction (XRD) with an average crystallite size of ~76 nm. The electrokinetic measurement results indicate that the coated NPs are the most stable and have an average size close to 200 nm when the pH is between 3 and 5. Finally, we presented a cytotoxicity study of naked and CS-coated NPs. The results indicate that naked NPs exhibit varying cellular toxicity, as indicated by decreased cell viability, morphological changes, and an increase in an apoptotic marker. The CS-coated NPs prevented the cytotoxic effect of the naked NPs, demonstrating the significance of CS as a stabilizing agent.

Engineering a polymer-encapsulated manganese dioxide/upconversion nanoprobe for FRET-based hydrogen peroxide detection

Hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) is considered a significant biomarker in various diseases and could induce deleterious health problems at irregular physiological concentrations. Therefore, developing a simple, efficient biocompatible nanoprobe for trace amount H₂O₂ detection with high sensitivity and specificity is of great help for early diagnosis and therapeutics. Herein, we designed amphiphilic poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride) (PMSA)-encapsulated nanoclusters composed of upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) and manganese dioxide nanoparticles (MnO₂ NPs) at a specific ratio to produce a near-infrared (NIR) excited luminescent nanoprobe for H₂O₂ detection. Our results revealed that the MnO₂ NPs tended to experience catalytic decomposition when exposed to H₂O₂, while the UCNPs were retained inside the PSMA encapsulation, causing recovery of the UCNP emission band at 470 nm in accordance with H₂O₂ concentration. This luminescence recovery was linearly dependent on H₂O₂ concentrations, yielding a limit of detection (LOD) of 20 nM. The easy-to-interpret H₂O₂ nanoprobe also proved high selectivity in the presence of other interfering substances, and biocompatibility and water-dispersibility, making it an ideal candidate for real-time detection of disease-related H₂O₂ in living organisms.

Self-sacrificial reconstruction of MoO42- intercalated NiFe LDH/Co2P heterostructures enabling interfacial synergies and oxygen vacancies for triggering oxygen evolution reaction

Exploring high-efficiency electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is one of the most important concerns to produce hydrogen in water electrolysis. Herein, the FNM/Co2P-0.4 heterostructure was designed as an electrocatalyst for the OER process by the combination of MoO42- intercalating NiFe LDH and Co2P on nickel foam (NF). The surface reconstruction and MoO42- leaching can induce the conversion of Co2P and NiFe LDH on FNM/Co2P-0.4 to generate Co/NiOOH with more oxygen vacancies. Beyond, CoOOH and NiOOH can also synergize to reduce the energy barrier of OER, optimize conductivity, and improve stability. The surface reconstruction and the formation of OOH⁎ were further unveiled by in-situ UV-vis absorption spectra and Fourier-transformed alternative current voltammetry (FTACV). The integration of interfacial synergies and oxygen vacancies can facilitate the adsorption/desorption of intermediates, regulate the d-band center, and expose more active sites. And as a result, FNM/Co2P-0.4 shows a significant low overpotential (240 mV) at 50 mA cm-2, a small Tafel (74 mV dec-1), low activation energy (Ea) and remarkable durability. This work provides a new pathway to improve the OER performance by using interfacial synergies and rich oxygen vacancies derived from the self-sacrificial reconstruction of heterostructured electrocatalysts.

Multipod Bi(Cu2-xS)n Nanocrystals formed by Dynamic Cation-Ligand Complexation and Their Use as Anodes for Potassium-Ion Batteries

We report the formation of an intermediate lamellar Cu-thiolate complex, and tuning its relative stability using alkylphosphonic acids are crucial to enabling controlled heteronucleation to form Bi(Cu_2-xS)_n heterostructures with a tunable number of Cu_2-xS stems on a Bi core. The denticity of the phosphonic acid group, concentration, and chain length of alkylphosphonic acids are critical factors determining the stability of the Cu-thiolate complex. Increasing the stability of the Cu-thiolate results in single Cu_2-xS stem formation, and decreased stability of the Cu-thiolate complex increases the degree of heteronucleation to form multiple Cu_2-xS stems on the Bi core. Spatially separated multiple Cu_2-xS stems transform into a support network to hold a fragmented Bi core when used as an anode in a K-ion battery, leading to a more stable cycling performance showing a specific capacity of ∼170 mAh·g^-1 after 200 cycles compared to ∼111 mAh·g^-1 for Bi-Cu_2-xS single-stem heterostructures.

Heterostructured BiVO4/CoPi nanoarrays as high-efficiency photoanode and AuPt nanodendrites as nanozyme for sensitive sensing of miRNA 141

MicroRNA (miRNA) is a new class of tumor biomarkers in human body for early diagnosis and therapy of cancers, whose detection has scientific significance and potential applications. Herein, a sensitive heterostructured BiVO₄/CoPi photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensor was established for sensing miRNA 141 with assistance of home-synthesized AuPt nanodendrites (NDs) as nanozyme. Specifically, the BiVO₄/CoPi heterostructures displayed rough worm-like internetworks, as characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). In parallel, the PEC and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy tests confirmed their excellent optical property, combined by discussing the interfacial electron transfer mechanism. Additionally, the AuPt NDs displayed superior peroxidase-like property in the presence of H₂O₂ as identified by benchmarked tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) oxidation, coupled by showing remarkable catalysis for 3-amino-9-ethylcarbazole (AEC) oxidation to form biocatalytic precipitation (BCP). Integrated by a cyclic enzyme strategy, the developed PEC biosensor exhibited a wider linear range of 5 fM ∼1 pM and a lower limit of detection (LOD) as low as 0.17 fM (S/N = 3). This work provides some valuable insights for sensitive analysis of tumor-associated miRNA in clinic.

Heterostructures of tin and tungsten selenides for robust overall water splitting

Layered transition metal selenides have garnered increased attention in recent times as non-noble metal bifunctional electrocatalysts for electrochemical water splitting. Tungsten diselenide @ tin diselenide heterostructures in the present study significantly increase the electrochemical performance of oxygen evolution reaction with a low overpotential of 250 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 and high stability for 16 h (8.9 % loss), hydrogen evolution reaction with a low overpotential of 180 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 with a 21.9% loss in 16 h. The overall water splitting using a lab-size electrolyzer shows a low cell voltage (1.52 V @ 10 mA cm^-2) and high durability for 50 h (15.2% loss @ 10 mA cm^-2 and 4.4% loss @ 50 mA cm^-2). As a result, the heterostructures have demonstrated their ability to handle multiple challenges in energy conversion systems due to their unique properties.

Covalent-anion-driven self-assembled cadmium/ molybdenum sulfide hybrids for efficient nitenpyram degradation

Photocatalytic technology is an attractive and promising approach for nitenpyram degradation; however, how to ensure the carrier separation efficiency and catalytic sites exposure is still great challenges. In this study, we construct CdS@MoS₂ (CM) nanohybrids with a 3D hierarchical configuration to enhance the separation and transfer efficiency of the photo-induced electron by a covalent-anion-driven self-assembly method. The vertical orientation of MoS₂ ultrathin nanosheets not only provides a large specific surface area for the oxidation and reduction reactions but also enables the active edge sites of MoS₂ to be maximally exposed. As a result, this structure drastically facilitates the exposure of the catalytic active region and the performance of the carrier transfer and injection into photocatalytic degradation for nitenpyram (NTP). The optimal CdS-MoS₂ has an impressive and stable NTP removal efficiency with a high reaction rate constant up to 0.078 min^-1, which is 3.25 times higher than that of pure cadmium sulfide. The photocatalytic degradation mechanism and degradation pathway of NTP were presented by synthesizing the results of experimental analysis and density flooding theory (DFT) calculations. In further, for the first time, the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of NTP on moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBRs) was disclosed and a continuous photocatalytic wastewater pretreatment device based on the CM is proposed for the stable biological nitrogen removal activity of MBBRs, which can degrade more than 80% NTP per hour.

Magnetic-Field-Enhanced H2S Sensitivity of Cu2O/NiO Heterostructure Ordered Nanoarrays

Magnetism is a promising external intervention for gas sensitivity based on a heterogeneous interfacial structure caused by the regulation of the heterogeneous interface conductivity and the surface oxygen adsorption. In this study, Cu₂O/NiO heterostructure-ordered nanoarrays were prepared with a two-dimensional (2D) electrodeposition in situ assembly method for H₂S gas detection at room temperature under the action of a magnetic field. The nanoarrays were multibarrier structures with a strictly periodic structure that was greater than hundreds of microns in size. The experimental data confirmed that the response of 50 ppm of H₂S based on the nanoarrays was improved by nearly 61% with a relatively weak magnetic field. Particularly at a low concentration (≤20 ppm), the effect of the magnetic field enhancement on the sensitivity was more obvious. We attributed the enhancement of the gas sensitivity with the magnetic field to the regulation of the Cu₂O-NiO interface conductance and the surface oxygen adsorption. This study demonstrated that a magnetic field could significantly enhance the gas sensitivity based on heterostructures. Results of this study provide an important reference for the application of magnetism in gas detection and the design of new gas-sensitive materials.

N-Doped Carbon Electrocatalyst: Marked ORR Activity in Acidic Media without the Contribution from Metal Sites?

Fe-N-C electrocatalysts have been demonstrated to be the most promising substitutes for benchmark Pt/C catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Herein, we report that N-doped carbon materials with trace amounts of iron (0-0.08 wt. %) show excellent ORR activity and durability comparable and even superior to those of Pt/C in both alkaline and acidic media without significant contribution by the metal sites. Such an N-doped carbon (denoted as N-HPCs) features a hollow and hierarchically porous architecture, and more importantly, a noncovalently bonded N-deficient/N-rich heterostructure providing the active sites for oxygen adsorption and activation owing to the efficient electron transfer between the layers. The primary Zn-air battery using N-HPCs as the cathode delivers a much higher power density of 158 mW cm^-2 , and the maximum power density in the H₂ -O₂ fuel cell reaches 486 mW cm^-2 , which is comparable to and even better than those using conventional Fe-N-C catalysts at cathodes.

Computational data of molybdenum disulfide/graphene bilayer heterojunction under strain

The data presented in this paper refer to the research article "Dry and Hydrated Defective Molybdenum Disulfide/Graphene Bilayer Heterojunction Under Strain for Hydrogen Evolution from Water Splitting: A First-principle Study". Here, we present the Density Functional Theory (DFT) data used to generate optimal geometries and electronic structure for the MoS₂/graphene heterostructure under strain, for dry and hydrated pristine and defect configurations. We also report DFT data used to obtain hydrogen Gibbs free energies for adsorption on the MoS₂ monolayer and on graphene of the heterostructure. The DFT data were calculated using the periodic DFT code CRYSTAL17, which employs Gaussian basis functions, under the hybrid functionals PBE0 and HSE06. Moreover, we also report the data used for Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM) and Non-covalent Interaction (NCI) analysis calculations. These data were obtained using the optimized unit cell configurations from the periodic DFT and inputted to Gamess program, thus generating files that could be read by the Multiwfn program used for QTAIM and NCI calculations.

Adsorption of water on C sites vacancy defected graphene/h-BN: First-principles study

Heterostructures (HS), vacancy defects in HS, and molecular adsorption on defected HS of 2D materials are fervently inspected for a profusion of applications because of their aptness to form stacked layers that confer approach to an amalgamation of favorable electronic and magnetic properties. In this context, graphene (Gr), hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), HS of graphene/h-BN (Gr/h-BN), and molecular adsorption on Gr/h-BN offer promising prospects for electronic, spintonic, and optoelectronic devices. In this study, we investigated the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of C sites vacancy defects in Gr/h-BN HS and adsorption of water molecule on defected Gr/h-BN HS materials by using first-principles calculations based on spin-polarized density functional theory method within van der Waals (vdW) corrections DFT-D2 approach. We found that these considered materials are stable 2D vdW HS. Based on band structure calculations, they are semimetallic, and on density of states and partial density of states analysis, they are magnetic materials. The magnetic moment developed in these defected systems is due to the unpaired up-spin and down-spin states in the orbitals of atoms present in the materials created by the vacancy defects.

Transformation of Metal Halides to Facet-Modulated Lead Halide Perovskite Platelet Nanostructures on A-Site Cs-Sublattice Platform

The conversion of metal halides to lead halide perovskites with B-site metal ion diffusion has remained a convenient approach for obtaining shape-modulated perovskite nanocrystals. These transformations are typically observed for materials having a common A-site Cs-sublattice platform. However, due to the fast reactions, trapping the interconversion process has been difficult. In an exploration of the tetragonal phase of Cs₇Cd₃Br₁₃ platelets as the parent material, herein, a slower diffusion of Pb(II) leading to facet-modulated CsPbBr₃ platelets is reported. This was expected due to the presence of Cd(II) halide octahedra along with Cd(II) halide tetrahedra in the parent material. This helped in microscopically monitoring their phase transformation via an epitaxially related core/shell intermediate heterostructure. The transformation was also derived and predicted by density functional theory calculations. Further, when the reaction chemistry was tuned, core/shell platelets were transformed to different facet-modulated and hollow CsPbBr₃ platelet nanostructures. These platelets having different facets were also explored for catalytic CO₂ reduction, and their catalytic rates were compared.

Electrocatalyst based on Ni2P nanoparticles and NiCoP nanosheets for efficient hydrogen evolution from urea wastewater

Urea electrolysis is a promising approach to produce hydrogen while simultaneously purifying urea-rich wastewater. In practice, it is highly desirable but still challenging, through the structure construction strategy, to implement a method with controllable synthesis of ultra-thin nanosheet arrays with rich interfaces, and then apply them into the catalysis operations of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and urea oxidation reaction (UOR). In this work, the bifunctional electrocatalyst Ni₂P/NiCoP nanosheets anchored nickel foam (NF) were prepared with ultra-thin rich interfaces by regulating the Co- and P-doping. The results showed that the elaborated Ni₂P/NiCoP/NF electrode delivered the excellent electrocatalytic activities for both UOR and HER operations. Particularly for UOR, it required only a cell voltage of 1.41 V at 100 mA cm^-2, which was 400 mV lower than that in the traditional overall water splitting operation.

Ultrasensitive photoelectrochemical aptasensor for detecting telomerase activity based on Ag2S/Ag decorated ZnIn2S4/C3N4 3D/2D Z-scheme heterostructures and amplified by Au/Cu2+-boron-nitride nanozyme

Enzyme-mediated signal amplification strategies have gained substantial attention in photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensing, while natural enzyme on the photoelectrode inevitably obstructs the interfacial electron transfer, in turn deteriorating the photocurrent responses. Herein, Au nanoparticles and Cu²⁺-modified boron nitride nanosheets (AuNPs/Cu²⁺-BNNS) behaved as nanozyme to achieve remarkable magnification in the PEC signals from a novel signal-off aptasensor for ultra-sensitive assay of telomerase (TE) activity based on Ag₂S/Ag nanoparticles decorated ZnIn₂S₄/C₃N₄ Z-scheme heterostructures (termed as Ag₂S/Ag/ZnIn₂S₄/C₃N₄, synthesized by hydrothermal treatment). Specifically, telomerase primer sequences (TS) were extended by TE in the presence of deoxyribonucleoside triphosphates (dNTPs), which was directly bond with the thiol modified complementary DNA (cDNA), achieving efficient linkage with the nanozyme via Au-S bond. The immobilized nanoenzyme catalyzed the oxidation between 4-chloro-1-naphthol (4-CN) and H₂O₂ to generate insoluble precipitation on the photo-electrode. By virtue of the inhibited PEC signals with the TE-enabled TS extension, an aptasensor for assay of TE activity was developed, showing the wide linear range of 50-5×10⁵ cell mL^-1 and a low detection limit of 19 cell mL^-1. This work provides some valuable guidelines for developing advanced nanozyme-based PEC bioanalysis of diverse cancer cells.

Accelerated charge transfer in well-designed S-scheme Fe@TiO2/Boron carbon nitride heterostructures for high performance tetracycline removal and selective photo-reduction of CO2 greenhouse gas into CH4 fuel

Designing and fabrication of smart hybrid multifunctional materials for energy/fuel production and environmental detoxification is indeed of great significance for sustainable development. Herein, we synthesized a new well-structured S-scheme heterostructure Fe@TiO₂/Boron Carbon nitride (FT/BCN) with high performance tetracycline degradation and selective CO₂ photo-reduction to CH₄. Under visible light irradiation, 96.3% tetracycline was degraded in 60 min using best performing FT30/BCN sample with a high 83.2% total organic carbon removal in 2 h. The tetracycline degradation rate for FT30/BCN composite catalyst was ∼7 times than bare boron carbon nitride (BCN). The impact of reaction parameters as pH, presence of interfering electrolytes, light source and water matrix was also investigated. The FT30/BCN photocatalyst shows dramatic improvement in CO₂ photoreduction as exhibited in 24.7 μmol g^-1 h^-1 CH₄ and 2.4 μmol g^-1 h^-1 CO evolutions with optimal 91.1% CH₄ selectivity. Pure BCN shows a poor 39.1% selectivity. Further, effect of alkali activation, CO₂/H₂O feed ratio, reducing agent and light source onto CH₄ production and selectivity was also investigated. The CH₄ evolution and selectivity was improved because of enhanced visible light absorption, high adsorption potential, charge carrier separation and high reducing power of photogenerated electrons induced by an effective S-scheme heterojunction between Fe@TiO₂ and boron carbon nitride. An S-scheme (step-scheme) charge transfer mechanism is here operative both during tetracycline removal and CO₂ reduction. The drug degradation route and photocatalytic mechanism for antibiotic removal and CO₂ reduction was also predicted.

Boron nitride quantum dots decorated MIL-100(Fe) for boosting the photo-generated charge separation in photocatalytic refractory antibiotics removal

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have great potential for photocatalysis, but only possess moderate activity due to their slow charge transfer and low solar energy conversion. Herein, heterostructures photocatalysts constructed by boron nitride quantum dots (BNQDs) and MIL-100(Fe) (MNB) were successfully fabricated for overcoming these shortcomings. It was indicated that the composites possessed large surface area, mesoporous structure, and enhanced visible light absorption. The MNB photocatalysts exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity for tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) degradation under visible light irradiation. Compared with MIL-100(Fe), the photodegradation rate of TC-HCl by MNB-1 was 0.02383 min^-1, which was 5.3 times higher than that of pure MIL-100(Fe). The close contact of MIL-100(Fe) with BNQDs and the synergistic effect between them were the main reasons for the improved photodegradation performance. This study reveals that a rational combination of MIL-100(Fe) and BNQDs can improve photocatalytic activity to enhance molecular oxygen activation. Therefore, it is reasonable to believe that quantum dots/MOFs photocatalysts have great potential in environmental remediation.

In-situ fabrication of novel flower like MoS2/CoTiO3 nanorod heterostructures for the recyclable degradation of ciprofloxacin and bisphenol A under sunlight

Effectual degradation of toxic water contaminants is a crucial step in water purification and designing an efficient semiconductor based hybrid structure photocatalyst is a good approach to achieve this. Benefiting from the combination of semiconductors, a series of novel visible-light active flower-like MoS₂/CoTiO₃ nanorod heterostructures with excellent morphological contact interface were prepared through a facile in-situ hydrothermal process. These heterostructures were well characterized and demonstrated high photocatalytic performance for ciprofloxacin (CIP) and bisphenol A (BPA) under sunlight irradiation. Compared to pristine CoTiO₃ and MoS₂, the optimal catalyst (5 wt% MoS₂/CoTiO₃) presented 39.97 and 22.32 times higher activity for CIP degradation and 26.85 and 15.66 times higher activity for BPA degradation, respectively. This improved activity can be accounted for the effective interfacial contact which promotes the efficient charge carriers separation and reduce its recombination. The catalyst exhibited decent stability and was potentially reused for five cycles without significant loss in activity. Furthermore, based on active species scavenging experiments the plausible photodegradation mechanism is discussed in detail.

Ce-based heterogeneous catalysts by partial thermal decomposition of Ce-MOFs in activation of peroxymonosulfate for the removal of organic pollutants under visible light

Metal-organic framework (MOF) derivatives have drawn considerable attention for applications in various fields. In this work, spindle-shaped Ce-TCPPs were assembled by a rapid microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. After thermal treatment at low temperature under a N₂ atmosphere, the Ce-TCPPs were partially pyrolyzed and converted to a novel CeO₂/N-doped carbon/Ce-TCPP nanocomposite. Compared to completely decomposed materials, these partially decomposed heterogeneous catalysts exhibited significantly higher photocatalytic activation ability toward PMS for the removal of organic pollutants (e.g., rhodamine B, methylene blue, methyl orange, tetracycline and oxytetracycline). For the optimized sample thermal treated at 450 °C, a 100 mL RhB solution (10 mg/L) can be removed within 20 min with the assistance of PMS under visible light. The significantly enhanced activity can be attributed to the effective spatial separation of photogenerated electrons and holes in the formed Z-scheme CeO₂/N-doped carbon/Ce-TCPP system. This work may provide useful guidance for the design and fabrication of MOF-derived photocatalytic systems for environmental remediation.

Bioinspired organohydrogels with heterostructures: Fabrications, performances, and applications

Since emerging in 1960, the artificial hydrogels have garnered enormous attentions in scientific community due to their high level of similarities to biological soft tissues in both structures and properties. With the proceeding of research, the concern of hydrogels is gradually shifted from fundamental investigation to abundant functionalization. In contrast to the natural soft tissues, the current artificial hydrogels still possess relatively simple structures and unsatisfactory environmental adaptability, extremely limiting their practical applications in complex environments. Enlightened by the prominent adaptability of biological organisms, the binary cooperative complementary principle is utilized to develop bioinspired organohydrogels by combining two components with opposite but cooperative physiochemical features. The present review provides the advanced progresses of bioinspired organohydrogels with sophisticated heterogeneous networks and desirably environmental adaptabilities. We clearly summarize the synthesizing strategies in regard to both corresponding mechanisms and typical examples, including macroscopic organohydrogels, organohydrogels with binary solvent, organohydrogels with heteronetworks, and emulsion-based organohydrogels. Meanwhile, the intriguing features of the reported organohydrogels, such as temperature resistance, switchable mechanics, adaptive wettability, and opposite components compatibility, are also clearly highlighted with a short overview of their promising applications. Ultimately, the current challenges and perspectives on the future development of bioinspired organohydrogels are also discussed.

2D Semiconductor Nanomaterials and Heterostructures: Controlled Synthesis and Functional Applications

Two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors beyond graphene represent the thinnest stable known nanomaterials. Rapid growth of their family and applications during the last decade of the twenty-first century have brought unprecedented opportunities to the advanced nano- and opto-electronic technologies. In this article, we review the latest progress in findings on the developed 2D nanomaterials. Advanced synthesis techniques of these 2D nanomaterials and heterostructures were summarized and their novel applications were discussed. The fabrication techniques include the state-of-the-art developments of the vapor-phase-based deposition methods and novel van der Waals (vdW) exfoliation approaches for fabrication both amorphous and crystalline 2D nanomaterials with a particular focus on the chemical vapor deposition (CVD), atomic layer deposition (ALD) of 2D semiconductors and their heterostructures as well as on vdW exfoliation of 2D surface oxide films of liquid metals.

Optical bandgap control in Al2O3/TiO2 heterostructures by plasma enhanced atomic layer deposition: Toward quantizing structures and tailored binary oxides

Atomically thin heterostructures and superlattices are promising candidates for various optoelectronic and photonic applications. Different combinations of Al₂O₃/TiO₂ composites are obtained by plasma enhanced atomic layer deposition (PEALD). Their growth, composition, dispersion relation, and optical bandgap are systematically studied by means of UV/VIS spectrophotometry, spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE), x-ray reflectometry (XRR), scanning transmission electron microscopy(STEM) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Besides, an effective medium approximation (EMA) approach is applied to model the heterostructures theoretically. The refractive index and the indirect bandgap of the heterostructures depend on the ratio of the two oxides, while the bandgap is very sensitive to the thicknesses of the barrier and quantum well layers. A large blue shift of the absorption edge from 400 nm to 320 nm is obtained by changing the TiO₂ (quantum well) thickness from ~2 nm to ~0.1 nm separated by ~2 nm of Al₂O₃ (barrier) layers. PEALD unfolds the possibility of achieving optical quantizing effects within complex heterostructures enabling control of their structures down to atomic scale. It enables a path towards atomic scale processing of new 'artificial' materials with desired refractive indices and bandgap combinations by precise control of their compositions.

Enhancing electrochemical performance of electrode material via combining defect and heterojunction engineering for supercapacitors

The poor conductivity and deficient active sites of transition metal oxides lead to low energy density of supercapacitors, which limits their wide application. In this work, double transition metal oxide heterojunctions with oxygen vacancy (V_o-ZnO/CoO) nanowires are prepared by effective hydrothermal and thermal treatments. The formation of the heterojunction results in the redistribution of interface charge between ZnO and CoO, generating an internal electric field to accelerate the electron transport. Meanwhile, oxygen vacancies can enhance the redox reaction activity to further improve the electrochemical kinetics of the electrode material. Therefore, the prepared V_o-ZnO/CoO can provide a superior specific capacity of 845 C g^-1 (1 A g^-1). An asymmetric supercapacitor with the V_o-ZnO/CoO as positive electrode shows a higher energy density of 51.6 Wh kg^-1 when the power density reaches 799.9 W kg^-1. This work proposes a synergistic combination of defect and heterojunction engineering to improve the electrochemical properties of materials, providing an important guidance for material design in energy-storage field.

One-dimensional, space-confined, solid-phase growth of the Cu9S5@MoS2 core-shell heterostructure for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Binary transition metal chalcogenide core-shell nanocrystals are considered the most promising nonprecious metal catalysts for large-scale industrial hydrogen production. Herein, we report a one-dimensional, space-confined, solid-phase strategy for the growth of a Cu₉S₅@MoS₂ core-shell heterostructure by combining electrospinning and chemical vapor deposition methods. The Cu₉S₅@MoS₂ core-shell nanocrystals were synthesized in situ on carbon nanofibers (Cu₉S₅@MoS₂/CNFs) by an S vapor graphitization process. Tuning of the MoS₂ shell numbers can be controlled by changing the mass ratio of the Cu and Mo precursors. We experimentally determined the effects of the thickness of the MoS₂ shell on the electrocatalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acidic and alkaline solutions. When the mass ratio is 3:1, the Cu₉S₅@MoS₂/CNFs show the fewest MoS₂ shells with just 1-2 layers each and exhibit the best HER performance with small overpotentials of 116 mV and 114 mV in acidic and alkaline solutions, respectively, at a current density of 10 mA cm^-2. The core shell structures, with their unique Cu-S-Mo nanointerfaces, could enhance the electron transfer and surface area, thus increasing the performance of the HER. This work provides a facile method to design unique core shell assemblies in one-dimensional nanostructures.
