Abstract
OBJECTIVE Accelerated female reproductive events represent the early onset of reproductive events involving puberty, menarche, pregnancy loss, first sexual intercourse, first birth, parity, and menopause. This study aimed to explore the association between childhood adversity and accelerated female reproductive events. DATA SOURCES PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase were systematically searched from September 22, 2022 to September 23, 2022. STUDY ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA Observational cohort, cross-sectional, and case-control studies in human populations were included if they reported the time of reproductive events for female individuals with experience of childhood adversity and were published in English. METHODS Two reviewers independently screened studies, obtained data, and assessed study quality, and conflicts were resolved by a third reviewer. Dichotomous outcomes were evaluated using meta-analysis, and pooled odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were generated using random-effects models. Moderation analysis and meta-regression were used to investigate heterogeneity. RESULTS In total, 21 cohort studies, 9 cross-sectional studies, and 3 case-control studies were identified. Overall, female individuals with childhood adversity were nearly 2 times more likely to report accelerated reproductive events than those with no adversity exposure (odds ratio, 1.91; 95% confidence interval, 1.33-2.76; I2=99.6%; P<.001). Moderation analysis indicated that effect sizes for the types of childhood adversity ranged from an odds ratio of 1.61 (95% confidence interval, 1.23-2.09) for low socioeconomic status to 2.13 (95% confidence interval, 1.14-3.99) for dysfunctional family dynamics. Among the 7 groups based on different reproductive events, including early onset of puberty, early menarche, early sexual initiation, teenage childbirth, preterm birth, pregnancy loss, and early menopause, early sexual initiation had a nonsignificant correlation with childhood adversity (odds ratio, 2.70; 95% confidence interval, 0.88-8.30; I2=99.9%; P<.001). Considerable heterogeneity (I2>75%) between estimates was observed for over half of the outcomes. Age, study type, and method of data collection could explain 35.9% of the variance. CONCLUSION The literature tentatively corroborates that female individuals who reported adverse events in childhood are more likely to experience accelerated reproductive events. This association is especially strong for exposure to abuse and dysfunctional family dynamics. However, the heterogeneity among studies was high, requiring caution in interpreting the findings and highlighting the need for further evaluation of the types and timing of childhood events that influence accelerated female reproductive events.

Abstract
In recent years, developing and developed countries are witnessing delayed childbearing among women contributing to the overall decline in fertility rates. The age at which a woman has her last child impacts maternal and child health, especially in a country with high maternal and perinatal mortality rates. This study aims to investigate the trends of age at the last birth among Indian women and to identify the potential factors contributing towards higher maternal age. The present study uses the data from five consecutive rounds (1992-1993, 1998-1999, 2004-2005, 2015-2016, and 2019-2021) of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS). We have used descriptive statistics, bivariate, Cox proportional hazard regression analysis, multiple classification analysis (MCA), Kaplan-Meier curve, life table survival analysis, hierarchical clustered heat map, multivariate decomposition analysis (MDA) and geospatial mapping to fulfill the objective of the study. Results show that the proportion of women with age at last birth before reaching the age of 30 years was less than half (nearly 35%) during NFHS-I while during NFHS-V proportion becomes more than half and reaches 64.3% among 40-49 years women. Within three decades (1992-2021) there has been a decline of 15.8% in median age at last birth among women aged 40-49 years. Additionally, the highest percentage decline in predicted mean age at last birth was noted among individuals from rural area (10.7%, 3.3 years), Hindu religion (10.8%, 3.3 years), poor wealth quantile (12.5%, 4.0 years) and those with mass media exposure (10.6%, 3.2 years) from NFHS-I (1992-1993) to NFHS-V (2019-2021). Although there exists the need to delay age at first childbirth, the age at last childbirth also plays an important role in women's and child health status. Hence, it is important to address the healthcare needs of those delaying their childbirth.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Early menopausal onset can increase adverse health outcomes in later life; meanwhile, reproductive experiences before menopause may affect its timing. Framed by life course methodology, the study tested for independent and interdependent associations between reproductive history (contraception, age at first birth, parity, terminated pregnancy) and socioeconomic factors (education, wealth, rural-urban residence, cigarette use, marital status, age at first cohabitation) with the occurrence of early menopause. METHODS The study population was ever-married women aged 40-49 from the 2016 Demographic & Health Survey (N = 2748). Analytical methods involved probability- and age-adjusted multivariate logistic regression models and predictive margins. RESULTS Connections between reproductive and socioeconomic characteristics were key dynamics associated with menopause in ages 40-49. Contraception, parity, and ages at first birth and marriage were found to be independently associated with menopause in this age group. Evidence of interactions was found where no contraceptive use was associated with higher probabilities of menopause for first-time mothers aged 12-15 and for women with no education. CONCLUSIONS Studying Ugandan women's reproductive histories highlighted the importance of regional knowledge about menopause. Though we hypothesized that risks would correlate in a chain, the results pointed to risks clustering around contraception, suggesting that improving contraceptive use and education for women could increase menopausal age. Furthermore, the positive association between low parity and early menopause supports the biological mechanism of faster oocyte depletion; however, high-parity populations like Uganda tend to have a younger menopausal age than low-parity populations. Declining mortality in the demographic transition could explain these inverse associations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate whether maternal violence exposure personally and through her child is associated with an earlier age of menopause, controlling for covariates. METHODS Analyses used merged data from two related sources. Although mothers (n = 1,466) were interviewed in 1995 and then 20 years later (2015-17), their children were interviewed in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health repeatedly (Waves 1-4, 1994/5 to 2008-2009). Mothers reported their own age of menopause, and mothers and adolescents each reported their own exposure to violence as children and adults. RESULTS A mother's own childhood physical abuse (b = -1.60, P < .05) and her child's sexual abuse (b = -1.39, P < .01) both were associated with an earlier age of menopause. Mothers who were physically abused in childhood and have a child who experienced regular sexual abuse reached menopause 8.78 years earlier than mothers without a history of personal abuse or abuse of their child. CONCLUSIONS Our study is the first to find that age of natural menopause is associated with intergenerational violence exposures.

Abstract
Why a postfertile stage has evolved in females of some species has puzzled evolutionary biologists for over 50 years. We propose that existing adaptive explanations have underestimated in their formulation an important parameter operating both at the specific and the individual levels: the balance between cancer risks and cancer defenses. During their life, most multicellular organisms naturally accumulate oncogenic processes in their body. In parallel, reproduction, notably the pregnancy process in mammals, exacerbates the progression of existing tumors in females. When, for various ecological or evolutionary reasons, anticancer defenses are too weak, given cancer risk, older females could not pursue their reproduction without triggering fatal metastatic cancers, nor even maintain a normal reproductive physiology if the latter also promotes the growth of existing oncogenic processes, e.g., hormone-dependent malignancies. At least until stronger anticancer defenses are selected for in these species, females could achieve higher inclusive fitness by ceasing their reproduction and/or going through menopause (assuming that these traits are easier to select than anticancer defenses), thereby limiting the risk of premature death due to metastatic cancers. Because relatively few species experience such an evolutionary mismatch between anticancer defenses and cancer risks, the evolution of prolonged life after reproduction could also be a rare, potentially transient, anticancer adaptation in the animal kingdom.

Abstract
This study analyzes the intergenerational effects of late childbearing on offspring's adult longevity in a population in Utah (United States) that does not display evidence of parity-specific birth control-a so-called natural fertility population. Studies have found that for women who experience late menopause and prolonged reproduction, aging is postponed and longevity is increased. This is believed to indicate female "robustness" and the impact of biological or genetic factors. If indeed there is a genetic component involved, one would expect to also find evidence for the intergenerational transmission of longevity benefits. Our study investigates the relationship between prolonged natural fertility of mothers and their offspring's survival rates in adulthood. Gompertz regression models (N = 7,716) revealed that the offspring of mothers who were naturally fertile until a relatively advanced age lived significantly longer. This observed positive effect of late reproduction was not independent of but conditional upon survival of the mother to the end of her fecundity (defined as age 50). Offspring's relative risks at death beyond age 50 were 6-12 percent lower than those of their counterparts born to mothers who had an average age at last birth. Our results, which account for various early, adult, and later-life conditions, as well as shared frailty, suggest that there is a positive relationship between mother's age at last birth and offspring longevity, and strengthen the notion that age at menopause is a good predictor of this relationship.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Age-at-menopause and leukocyte telomere length (LTL) are both associated with biologic aging. Therefore, it would be reasonable to hypothesize that LTL may also serve as a marker for reproductive aging as shorter LTL may be associated with earlier age-at-menopause. METHODS We analyzed data from 799 post-menopausal (ages 41-85) participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1999-2002), a nationally representative sample of U.S. women. RESULTS Controlling for behavioral, socio-demographic, and health-related determinants of menopause, we found that among non-Hispanic white women, an increase of one standard deviation in LTL was associated with a 0.43 year higher reported age-at-menopause. Among Mexican-Americans, an increase of one standard deviation in LTL was associated with a 1.56 year earlier menopause. There was no significant association between LTL and age-at-menopause among non-Hispanic black women. CONCLUSIONS Our main finding is evidence of a strong interaction by race/ethnicity in the association between LTL and age-at-menopause. This evidence does not support the hypothesis that shorter LTL is a predictor of earlier age-at-menopause, as the magnitude and direction of the associations between LTL and age-at-menopause varied across racial/ethnic groups.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine the age at natural menopause and identify sociodemographic, reproductive and other factors associated with the attainment of natural menopause among women in Ibadan, Nigeria. METHODS This was a cross-sectional, descriptive, community-based study, using a cluster sample of eligible women 40-60 years of age residing in selected areas. Questionnaires were administered to women at home or in their work place. Data were analyzed using SPSS 16.0. RESULTS A total of 1189 Nigerian women responded. Their mean age (+/- SD) was 48.0 +/- 5.9 years and their median age 48 years. The majority, 1000 (84.1%), were currently married. Of the women, 581 (48.9%) were premenopausal, 119 (10.0%) perimenopausal and 489 (41.1%) postmenopausal. The median age at menopause using probit analysis was 50.2 years. Following logistic regression analysis, women who were not married and those who had no formal education were more likely to have attained menopause. Similarly, women who were younger, had managerial or professional jobs, and had used oral contraceptive pills were less likely to have attained natural menopause. CONCLUSIONS Efforts should be made to provide education about the menopause to all women in their respective communities, especially to those who are approaching their fifth decade and who have no formal education, to better prepare them for this change of life.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study had two main objectives: (1) to detect the differences in basic aspects of the reproductive aging process (age at menopause, menopausal symptoms, the medicalization of aging) among women from the region of Madrid, who at the time of the study were living in three different environmental contexts (rural, semiurban, and urban), and (2) to identify the main factors responsible for these differences. DESIGN Data from two different research projects have been pooled for the DAMES project (Decisions At MEnopause Study), and the Ecology of Reproductive Aging Project. The sample size was 1,142, women 45 to 55 years of age (103 rural, 744 semiurban, 295 urban). RESULTS Probit analysis was used to estimate median age at natural menopause in the three contexts. Rural women have a later onset of menopause (rural, 52.07 y; semiurban, 51.9 y; urban, 51.23 y) and significantly higher levels of the symptoms related to declines in estrogen, eg, hot flashes (rural, 56%; semiurban, 43%; urban, 46%; chi2=6.717, P=0.035) or loss of sexual desire (rural, 51%; semiurban, 44%; urban, 41%; chi2=24.934, P=0.001). Conversely, urban women suffer more from symptoms related to stress, eg, impatience (rural, 34%; semiurban, 25%; urban, 45%; chi2=41.328, P<0.001). The medicalization of menopause, measured in terms of both surgical menopause and the use of hormone therapy, is significantly higher in the urban population (surgical menopause: rural, 5.8%; semiurban, 8.7; urban, 10%; chi2=16.009, P<0.001). Despite these differences, levels of postmenopausal hormone therapy use are still somewhat lower than in other West European and North American populations. Two different logistic regression analyses were carried out to identify (1) factors associated with differences in ovarian aging, measured through menopausal status, and (2) factors associated with prevalence of hot flashes with respect to ovarian aging. Parity, body mass index, age, environmental context, and, slightly less so, smoking, alcohol consumption, age, education, age at menarche, and marital status all contribute significantly or nearly significantly and independently to the explanation of differences found. For the likelihood of having hot flashes, environmental context, age, education, age at menarche, menopausal status, and postmenopausal hormone therapy use all hae a significant or borderline significant effect. CONCLUSIONS Significant differences have been shown to exist in rural, semiurban and urban settings in the median age at menopause, in basic symptom frequency and type, and in the levels of medicalization of the process of reproductive aging. Within multivariate regression models, it has been shown that body mass index, age, and environmental context all contribute to differences in reproductive aging. The factors associated with ovarian aging and hot flashes are comparable to those in other industrialized populations, although standard interpretations should be expanded to include context-based realities, including (1) the higher levels of modernization of urban women that influence differential behavior with respekt to risk factors at menopausal age; (2) the different ecological realities surrounding nutrition, physical activity, and social support that characterize women's period of development; and (3) the differential construction of their identity as women in terms of assertiveness, aesthetic perceptions, and the use of health services. Context does, indeed, matter.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine menopause-related symptoms and quality of life in women aged 40-80 years living in a rural area of Turkey. METHODS A total of 338 women were evaluated in this cross-sectional study. As data sources we used a questionnaire that elicited information on the descriptive, fertility and menopausal characteristics of the women, the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS) and the Short Form-36 (SF-36). RESULTS The mean age at menopause was 46.5 +/- 0.4 years. The complaint stated most often as 'severe or very severe' was 'hot flushes and sweating' (50.7%). The physical functioning, physical role, bodily pain, general health, social functioning, emotional role and mental health scores of postmenopausal women were statistically higher (p < 0.05) than those of premenopausal women. Scores on physical function, physical role, general health and social function decreased significantly with age in postmenopausal women (p < 0.05), while none of the quality-of-life domain scores differed significantly with age in premenopausal women. CONCLUSIONS Quality of life is worse in postmenopausal women than premenopausal women, and in older than younger women in the postmenopausal period. Thus rural populations are primarily in need of public health care in the postmenopausal period.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The outcome of interest was the assessment of age at natural menopause and the variables hypothesized as covariates of age at menopause were indicators of demographic and social status, characteristics of the reproductive history and lifestyle behaviour. METHODOLOGY Seven thousand one hundred and eighty-three women from all social strata of non-clinical population, and aged between 35 and 65 years were investigated in cross-sectional survey across Poland in 2000-2004. The demographic, social, lifestyle behaviour and reproductive history aspects of the menopause-specific questionnaire were examined. The non-parametric Kaplan-Meier cumulative survivorship estimates were used to assess the timing of natural menopause. Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to assess the association of age at natural menopause with factors of interest and to estimate relevant relative risk (the hazard ratio) for earlier age at menopause. RESULTS The overall median age at natural menopause was 51.25 years; 25th percentile 49; 75th percentile 54 years. Temporal changes in age at menopause were not demonstrated in the sample (p=0.9 for differences among age cohorts). Univariate Cox models were first fitted to the age at natural menopause for all covariates singly. The findings revealed that marital status, living environment, employment, BMI, age at first live birth delivered by a woman, breastfeeding, physical activity, smoking amount, and consumption of alcohol were not associated with age at menopause (p>0.05). The multiple Cox model revealed that early menarche, short menstrual cycle length, smoking cigarettes, a low level of education, and a negative health perception were associated with younger age at menopause (p<0.01). Use of oral contraceptives and parity were associated with later menopause (p<0.01). CONCLUSION The present study provides an estimate of median age at natural menopause in Poland that may be used as a measure of health for the growing number of Polish women whose survival is calculated at 30 years after menopause. This study has revealed that the pattern of relationship between age at menopause and the study factors reflects its population-specific character for its social and cultural backgrounds, socio-economic status, and social behaviours.

Abstract
The reproductive history of 182 women in postreproductive life or near menopause from the Chilean part of Tierra del Fuego was traced back by means of familial interviews. These postmenopausal women represent the population since almost the beginning of the settlement, and their reproductive years were spent on the island. Path analysis was applied to analyze fertility determinants of these women and to propose a complex model of interconnections among factors. The reproductive history of these women is characterized by a long fertile span, a short childbearing period, and low fertility. Age at menarche is relatively late, and the age of the women at first birth is mainly determined by their late age at marriage. The use of contraception is related to both spacing and stopping behaviors. The late age of women at marriage, the rhythm of conception, and practices of contraception are proposed as the main determinants of fertility in Tierra del Fuego.

Abstract
To explain the menstrual cycle and menopause, human biologists during the past several decades have developed new models of the evolutionary origins and maintenance of female reproductive patterns that address both ultimate and proximate causation. Hypotheses proposed for these processes generally offer explanations for menstruation or for menopause, but not for both; ultimately, these explanations must be integrated. Reviewing current explanations, this paper offers an energetics-based evolutionary rationale compatible with past adaptations of Homo sapiens and with ecological patterns in small-scale, preindustrial social systems in which food resources vary and sometimes are scarce.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to determine the sources of information and hormone replacement therapy (HRT) prescribing practices of gynecologists in the capital city of Puebla, Mexico. METHODS Practicing gynecologists (n=44) in 29 colonias (neighborhoods) in the city of Puebla completed a self-administered standardized questionnaire. Survey topics included primary sources of information about HRT, discussion of patient health practices, awareness of alternative medicines, and HRT prescribing practices. RESULTS Medical journals, hospital presentations, and textbook manuals were rated as the primary sources of information about HRT by 69-73% of physicians. Patients were rated as a primary source of information by 25% of physicians, and pharmaceutical representatives by 16% of physicians. Almost all physicians reported a willingness to discuss diet, smoking habits and other health issues with their patients. Natural and herbal medications were recommended by 25% of physicians. Contrary to studies in the US, more male than female physicians reported recommending hormones to 90-100% of their menopausal patients (60 vs. 33%, n.s.). CONCLUSIONS This study revealed that physicians utilize a wide range of information about HRT, including patients and pharmaceutical representatives. Physicians' willingness to list patients as a source of information about HRT indicates the degree to which patients are involved in the medicalization of menopause. Reasons given for prescribing HRT (e.g. prevention of osteoporosis) were similar to those identified in studies in the US and Canada. Some variation in physician attitudes and practices related to HRT was apparent within the city of Puebla, Mexico.

Abstract
An unresolved question arising from human evolutionary research relates to the function of the postreproductive period in human females. If menopause is not merely an artifact resulting from the benefits of civilization, there must be an adaptive mechanism favoring the offspring of women who continue to thrive well past the time of their last ovulation. The "grandmother hypothesis" was developed on the basis of the original suggestion by Williams (1957 Evolution 11:32-39) that "stopping early" would benefit already-born children. This idea, combined with the concepts of kin selection (Hamilton 1964 J Theor Biol 7:1-52) and parental investment (Trivers 1972 Sexual Selection and the Descent of Man, Chicago: Aldine, p. 136-179), was expanded to suggest that postreproductive women (in contrast to males) contribute to their inclusive fitness by extending support to their grandchildren. We used discrete time event history analysis (Allison [1984] Event History Analysis, Newbury Park: Sage; Allison [1995] Survival Analysis, Cary, NC: SAS Institute) and logistic regression on data provided in population registers (Shūmon Aratame Chō, or SAC) from a village in central Japan, covering the period from 1671-1871, in a preliminary investigation of the effects of household grandparental presence on the probability of a child's death. We found that after accounting for the presence of other household members, the only grandparent whose presence exerted a consistent negative effect on the likelihood of a child's death was the mother's mother. Due to the small sample size of households that contained maternal grandmothers, these results failed to achieve statistical significance. Their importance, however, is in what they suggest about future research, i.e., census data from preindustrial societies can provide a basis for testing evolutionary proposals, including the "grandmother hypothesis."

Abstract
Selected reproductive determinants of age at menopause were analyzed using data from a representative sample of 4354 women aged 35-65 years. The data were collected in cross-sectional surveys carried out in Wielkopolska and Western part of Poland in the years 1998 to 2001. Menopausal status and median and mean ages at menopause were estimated with the use of retrospective and status-quo methods. It was found that the median age at natural menopause, estimated by probit analysis, was 50.1 years. Women, who had been treated with HRT (Hormonal Replacement Therapy) in the period of perimenopause, underwent menopause significantly later – their median age at menopause was 52.9 years. Results of ANOVA revealed that of all characteristics of female reproduction taken into consideration, age at menarche and length of menstruation cycle had significant influence on age at menopause. Menopause occurred markedly later in women who began to menstruate after 15 years of age and whose menstrual cycles lasted longer than 32 days. Reproductive determinants were considered as a complex factor.
Stepwise multiple regression analysis with backward elimination revealed that the reproductive determinants including the length of menstruation cycle, age at menarche, age at first and last pregnancies and length of lactation in combination affected age at menopause.
