Relative efficiency of preferred and nonpreferred patterns of lateralized foraging in the gentle lemur (Hapalemur griseus)

Lateralization in seven lemur species when presented with a novel cognitive task

OBJECTIVES

Asymmetrical behavior patterns are observed in many animal species, but the potential adaptive significance of lateralization and the evolutionary forces driving it remain unclear. Most laterality studies have focused on a single species, which makes interspecies comparisons difficult. The aim of this study was to examine differences in the strength and direction of lateralization in multiple lemur species when engaged in a standardized, novel cognitive task.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

We assessed laterality in seven lemur species at the Duke Lemur Center when using a novel puzzle-box. We recorded which hand opened the apparatus door and which hand picked up the food reward. We also recorded whether the mouth was used for either action instead of the hands. We then calculated handedness indices (HI), z-scores, and mouth-use rates.

RESULTS

Overall, 62% of individuals were more lateralized than chance. However, within-genera, there were relatively equal numbers of individuals with a left- or right-hand bias, which resulted in ambipreference at the genus level. The hand a lemur used on its first success in the task predicted its overall HI value, and the strength of lateralization increased as the number of successes increased. Varecia had significantly higher mouth-use rates than all other genera.

DISCUSSION

We found evidence of an individual learning trajectory in which the hand used on a lemur's first success was canalized as the preferred (and lateralized) hand, in support of the "cognitive simplicity" hypothesis. Individual variability in hand preference was high, which is consistent with previous research. Between-genera differences in mouth use appear to reflect species-specific feeding postures and differences in manual dexterity.

Strength of forelimb lateralization predicts motor errors in an insect

Lateralized behaviours are widespread in both vertebrates and invertebrates, suggesting that lateralization is advantageous. Yet evidence demonstrating proximate or ultimate advantages remains scarce, particularly in invertebrates or in species with individual-level lateralization. Desert locusts (Schistocerca gregaria) are biased in the forelimb they use to perform targeted reaching across a gap. The forelimb and strength of this bias differed among individuals, indicative of individual-level lateralization. Here we show that strongly biased locusts perform better during gap-crossing, making fewer errors with their preferred forelimb. The number of targeting errors locusts make negatively correlates with the strength of forelimb lateralization. This provides evidence that stronger lateralization confers an advantage in terms of improved motor control in an invertebrate with individual-level lateralization.

Origins and functions of laterality: interactions of motoric systems

To evaluate lateral motoric bias in response systems at different levels of the neuraxis and assess the extent of interaction between these levels in the small-eared bushbaby (Otolemur garnettii), 27 animals were tested for lateral bias in hand use and whole-body turn bias in two postural conditions. Subjects retrieved mealworms quadrupedally by reaching downwards into glass jars and bipedally by reaching upwards to baited straws. Eye bias was assessed separately. Behaviours were scored from videotape. Two subgroups were identified: SHIFTERS changed hand preference with posture and had correlations of hand/eye bias in quadrupedal posture and of hand/turn bias, with more bimanual reaching, in bipedal posture; NONSHIFTERS were consistent in hand preference and more strongly lateralised in reach and turn than SHIFTERS. Subgroups did not differ in reach efficiency. Results are interpreted to support the value of the analysis of motoric levels and their interactions in the study of the evolution of laterality. Assuming natural selection for coordinated and targeted behaviours to be the source of lateralisation, several proposals in support of a motoric theory of laterality origins and functions are advanced.

Further evidence of a right hand advantage in motor skill by chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes)

Asymmetries in motor skill when grasping small food items was evaluated in a sample of captive chimpanzees. In two experiments, error rates in grasping food were assessed when controlling for individual differences in grip morphology. In both experiments, chimpanzees were found to make more errors with the left compared to the right hand. Male chimpanzees were also found to make more errors compared to females. These results are discussed in the context of a presumed disassociation between hand preference and performance as indicators of cerebral dominance in motor functions.

Grip morphology and hand use in chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes): evidence of a left hemisphere specialization in motor skill

Three experiments on grip morphology and hand use were conducted in a sample of chimpanzees. In Experiment 1, grip morphology when grasping food items was recorded, and it was found that subjects who adopted a precision grip were more right-handed than chimpanzees using other grips. In Experiment 2, the effect of food type on grasping was assessed. Smaller food items elicited significantly more precision grips for the right hand. In Experiment 3, error rates in grasping foods were compared between the left and right hands. Significantly more errors were made for the left compared with the right hand. The cumulative results indicate that chimpanzees show a left-hemisphere asymmetry in motor skill that is associated with the use of precision grips.
