Catalytic Reductive Alcohol Etherifications with Carbonyl-Based Compounds or CO 2 and Related Transformations for the Synthesis of Ether Derivatives. CHEMSUSCHEM 2021; 14:3744-3784. Abstract
Ether derivatives have myriad applications in several areas of chemical industry and academia. Hence, the development of more effective and sustainable protocols for their production is highly desired. Among the different methodologies reported for ether synthesis, catalytic reductive alcohol etherifications with carbonyl-based moieties (aldehydes/ketones and carboxylic acid derivatives) have emerged in the last years as a potential tool. These processes constitute appealing routes for the selective production of both symmetrical and asymmetrical ethers (including O-heterocycles) with an increased molecular complexity. Likewise, ester-to-ether catalytic reductions and hydrogenative alcohol etherifications with CO2 to dialkoxymethanes and other acetals, albeit in less extent, have undergone important advances, too. In this Review, an update of the recent progresses in the area of catalytic reductive alcohol etherifications using carbonyl-based compounds and CO2 have been described with a special focus on organic synthetic applications and catalyst design. Complementarily, recent progress made in catalytic acetal/ketal-to-ether or ester-to-ether reductions and other related transformations have been also summarized.

Abstract
Liposomes are versatile three-dimensional, biomaterial-based frameworks that can spatially enclose a variety of organic and inorganic biomaterials for advanced targeted-delivery applications. Implementation of external-stimuli-controlled release of their cargo will significantly augment their wide application for liposomal drug delivery. This paper presents the synthesis of a carbohydrate-derived lipid, capable of changing its conformation depending on the presence of Zn2+ : an active state in the presence of Zn2+ ions and back to an inactive state in the absence of Zn2+ or when exposed to Na2 EDTA, a metal chelator with high affinity for Zn2+ ions. This is the first report of a lipid triggered by the presence of a metal chelator. Total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy and a single-liposome study showed that it indeed was possible for the lipid to be incorporated into the bilayer of stable liposomes that remained leakage-free for the fluorescent cargo of the liposomes. On addition of EDTA to the liposomes, their fluorescent cargo could be released as a result of the membrane-incorporated lipids undergoing a conformational change.

Abstract
The combination of benzyl bromide, sodium hydroxide and 15-crown-5 in tetrahydrofuran is shown to be an efficient method for installing benzyl groups at both the 4- and 6-positions regioselectively directly from peracetylated N-trichloroacetyl-protected glucosamine and galactosamine. Application of this benzylation strategy proved to significantly shorten the synthetic route to hyaluronic acid tetra- and hexamers.
