Abstract
The state-of-the-art in olefin metathesis is application of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-containing ruthenium alkylidenes for the formation of internal C=C bonds and of cyclic alkyl amino carbene (CAAC)-containing ruthenium benzylidenes in the production of terminal olefins. A straightforward synthesis of bis(CAAC)Ru indenylidene complexes, which are highly effective in the formation of both terminal and internal C=C bonds at loadings as low as 1 ppm, is now reported.

Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of two new ruthenium indenylidene complexes [RuCl(2)(SIPr)(Py)(Ind)] 6 and [RuCl(2)(SIPr)(3-BrPy)(Ind)] 7 featuring the sterically demanding N-heterocyclic carbene 1,3-bis(2,6-di isopropylphenyl)-4,5-dihydroimidazol-2-ylidene (SIPr) are reported. Remarkable activity was observed with these complexes in ring closing, enyne, and cross metathesis of olefins at low catalyst loadings. The performance of SIPr-bearing complexes 6 and 7 as well as [RuCl(2)(SIPr)(PCy(3))(Ind)] 5 in ring opening metathesis polymerization is also disclosed. This work highlights the enormous influence of the neutral "spectator" ligands on catalyst activity and stability.

Abstract
Quantification and variation of characteristic properties of different ligand classes is an exciting and rewarding research field. N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) are of special interest since their electron richness and structure provide a unique class of ligands and organocatalysts. Consequently, they have found widespread application as ligands in transition-metal catalysis and organometallic chemistry, and as organocatalysts in their own right. Herein we provide an overview on physicochemical data (electronics, sterics, bond strength) of NHCs that are essential for the design, application, and mechanistic understanding of NHCs in catalysis.

Abstract
The present report develops the idea that an N-heterocyclic carbene incorporating a remote anionic functionality--here, a malonate group--as a backbone component of its heterocyclic framework, can be "post-functionalized" directly from its transition-metal complexes, upon simple addition of a variety of electrophiles interacting directly with the malonate group in the outer coordination sphere. From a palette of selected electrophilic reagents, it was thus possible to modulate the electronic donor properties of the carbene center over a rather broad range. Both the zwitterionic complex [Rh{malo-NHC}(cod)] and the cationic derivatives [Rh{malo-NHC(E)}(cod)](+) (where "malo-NHC(E)" represents the ligand modified by a selected electrophile "E") were used as pre-catalysts in two types of catalytic reactions, namely, the polymerization of phenylacetylene and the hydroboration of styrene. The results indicate that, in both cases, the zwitterionic species is by far the best catalyst, whereas a decrease in the ligand donicity induced by the added electrophile results in a concomitant reduction of catalytic activity. Apparent deviations to such a trend in the case of the hydroboration of styrene were rationalized in terms of an interaction between the reactive catecholborane substrate and the remote functionality of the N-heterocyclic carbene leading to an in situ modification of the nature of the active species. These observations serve as a useful basis to define the scope and limitations of the present conceptual approach in catalysis.
