Abstract
Although dearomative functionalizations enable the direct conversion of flat aromatics into precious three-dimensional architectures, the case for simple arenes remains largely underdeveloped owing to the high aromatic stabilization energy. We herein report a dearomative sequential addition of two nucleophiles to arene π-bonds through umpolung of chromium-arene complexes. This mode enables divergent dearomative carbonylation reactions of benzene derivatives by tolerating various nucleophiles in combination with alcohols or amines under CO-gas-free conditions, thus providing modular access to functionalized esters or amides. The tunable synthesis of 1,3- or 1,4-cyclohexadienes as well as the construction of carbon quaternary centers further highlight the versatility of this dearomatization. Diverse late-stage modifications and derivatizations towards synthetically challenging and bioactive molecules reveal the synthetic utility. A possible mechanism was proposed based on control experiments and intermediate tracking.

Abstract
We report a convenient method for benzylic H/D exchange of a wide variety of substrates bearing primary, secondary, or tertiary C-H bonds via a reversible η6 -coordination strategy. A doubly cationic [CpCF3 RhIII ]2+ catalyst that serves as an arenophile facilitates deprotonation of inert benzylic hydrogen atoms (pKa >40 in DMSO) without affecting other hydrogen atoms, such as those on aromatic rings or in α-positions of carboxylate groups. Notably, the H/D exchange reactions feature high stereoretention. We demonstrated the potential utility of this method by using it for deuterium labeling of ten pharmaceuticals and their analogues.

Abstract
Nucleophilic aromatic substitution (SN Ar) is a powerful strategy for incorporating a heteroatom into an aromatic ring by displacement of a leaving group with a nucleophile, but this method is limited to electron-deficient arenes. We have now established a reliable method for accessing phenols and phenyl alkyl ethers via catalytic SN Ar reactions. The method is applicable to a broad array of electron-rich and neutral aryl fluorides, which are inert under classical SN Ar conditions. Although the mechanism of SN Ar reactions involving metal arene complexes is hypothesized to involve a stepwise pathway (addition followed by elimination), experimental data that support this hypothesis is still under exploration. Mechanistic studies and DFT calculations suggest either a stepwise or stepwise-like energy profile. Notably, we isolated a rhodium η5 -cyclohexadienyl complex intermediate with an sp3 -hybridized carbon bearing both a nucleophile and a leaving group.

Abstract
Diarylmethanes are cardinal scaffolds by virtue of their unique structural feature including the presence of a benzylic CH2 group that can be easily functionalized to generate a variety of fascinating molecules holding immense importance in pharmaceutical, agrochemical, and material sciences. While the originally developed protocols for benzylic C-H functionalization in diarylmethanes employing base-mediated and metal-catalyzed strategies are still actively used, they are joined by a new array of metal-free conditions, offering milder and benign conditions. With the recent surge of interest towards the synthesis of functionalized diarylmethanes, numerous choices are now available for a synthetic organic chemist to transform the benzylic C-H bond to C-C or C-X bond offering the synthesis of any molecule of choice. This review highlights benzylic methylene (CH2 ) functionalizations of diaryl/heteroarylmethanes utilizing various base-mediated, transition-metal-catalyzed, and transition-metal free approaches for the synthesis of structurally diverse important organic molecules, often with a high chemo-, regio- and enantio-selectivity. This review also attempts to provide analysis of the scope and limitations, mechanistic understanding, and sustainability of the transformations.

Abstract
Two pairs of enantiomers, (-) and (+)-securidanes A (1 and 2) and B (3 and 4) featuring unprecedented triarylmethane (TAM) skeletons, were isolated from Securidaca inappendiculata. Their structures were established by spectroscopic data, X-ray crystallography, and CD analysis. A plausible biosynthetic pathway for 1-4 based on the co-isolated precursors was proposed. Bioinspired total synthesis of 1-4 was completed in high yield, which in turn corroborated the biosynthetic hypothesis. Compounds 1-4 showed good inhibition against protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B). The molecular docking demonstrated that the strongest inhibitor 3 (IC50 = 7.52 μM) reaches deeper into the binding pocket and has an additional H-bond.

Abstract
The direct arylation of weakly acidic sp3-hybridized C-H bonds via deprotonated cross-coupling processes (DCCP) is a challenge. Herein, a Pd(NIXANTPHOS)-based catalyst for the mono arylation of 4-pyridylmethyl 2-aryl ethers to generate diarylated 4-pyridyl methyl ethers is introduced. Furthermore, under similar conditions, the diarylation of 4-pyridylmethyl ethers with aryl bromides has been developed. These methods enable the synthesis of new pyridine derivatives, which are common in medicinally active compounds and in application in materials science.

Abstract
Isoindolinones comprise an important class of medicinally active compounds. Herein we report a straightforward functionalization of the isoindolinones with aryl bromides (22 examples) using a Pd(OAc)2/NIXANTPHOS-based catalyst system. Additionally 3-aryl 3-hydroxy isoindolinone derivatives, which exhibit anti-tumor activity, can be accessed via a tandem reaction. Thus, when the arylation product is exposed to air under basic conditions, in situ oxidation takes place to install the 3-hydroxyl group. Furthermore, a tandem arylation/allylic substitution reaction is advanced in which both the arylation and allylic substitution are catalyzed by the same palladium catalyst. Finally, a tandem arylation/alkylation procedure is presented. These tandem reactions enable the synthesis of a variety of structurally diverse isoindolinone derivatives from common starting materials.

Sodium hydride (NaH) is widely used as a Brønsted base in chemical synthesis and reacts with various Brønsted acids, whereas it rarely behaves as a reducing reagent through delivery of the hydride to polar π electrophiles. This study presents a series of reduction reactions of nitriles, amides, and imines as enabled by NaH in the presence of LiI or NaI. This remarkably simple protocol endows NaH with unprecedented and unique hydride‐donor chemical reactivity.

Abstract
The first two highly enantioselective palladium-catalyzed allylic alkylations with benzylic nucleophiles, activated with Cr(CO)3 , have been developed. These methods enable the enantioselective synthesis of α-2-propenyl benzyl motifs, which are important scaffolds in natural products and pharmaceuticals. A variety of cyclic and acyclic allylic carbonates are competent electrophilic partners furnishing the products in excellent enantioselectivity (up to 99 % ee and 92 % yield). This approach was employed to prepare a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug analogue.

Abstract
Diarylmethylamines are key intermediates and products in the pharmaceutical industry. Herein we disclose a novel method toward the synthesis of these important compounds via CH functionalization. Presented is a reversible deprotonation of N-Boc benzylalkylamines at the benzylic CH with in situ arylation by a NiXantPhos-based palladium catalyst (50-93 % yield, 29 examples). The method is also successful with N-Boc-tetrahydroisoquinolines. The advantages of this method are it avoids strong bases, low temperatures, and the need to transmetallate to main group metals for the coupling.

Abstract
The arylation of sp3-hybridized C-H's bonds is a powerful strategy to build molecular complexity and diversity. A novel and efficient palladium-catalyzed direct sp3 C-H arylation of aryl and alkyl benzyl thioether derivatives with aryl bromides is reported. The reaction involves reversible deprotonation of the benzylic C-H's of the thioether with either LiN(SiMe3)2 or NaN(SiMe3)2 and subsequent cross-coupling to provide the functionalized products in up to 97% yield. A screen of 24 of the most successful ligands in cross-coupling chemistry led to the identification of NiXantPhos as the only viable ligand for this challenging coupling.

Abstract
An efficient system for the direct catalytic intermolecular α-arylation of acetamide derivatives with aryl bromides and chlorides is presented. The palladium catalyst is supported by Kwong's indole-based phosphine ligand and provides monoarylated amides in up to 95% yield. Excellent chemoselectivities (>10:1) in the mono- and diarylation with aryl bromides were achieved by careful selection of bases, solvents, and stoichiometry. Under the coupling conditions, the weakly acidic α-protons of amides (pKa up to 35) were reversibly depotonated by LiO t Bu, NaO t Bu, or NaN(SiMe3)2.

Abstract
A series of silicon-containing derivatives of the polycyclic musk odorant galaxolide (4 a) was synthesized, that is, disila-galaxolide ((4RS,7SR)-4 b/(4RS,7RS)-4 b), its methylene derivative rac-9, and its nor analogue rac-10. The tricyclic title compounds with their 7,8-dihydro-6,8-disila-6 H-cyclopenta[g]isochromane skeleton were prepared in multistep syntheses by using a cobalt-catalyzed [2+2+2] cycloaddition of the mono- yne H2C=CHCH2 OCH2 C≡CB(pin) (B(pin)=4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-1,3,2-di- oxaborolan-2-yl) with the diynes H2C=C[Si(CH3 )2 C≡CH]2 or H2C- [Si(CH3)2 C≡CH]2 as the key step. Employing [Cr(CO)3 (MeCN)3 ] as an auxiliary, the disila-galaxolide diastereomers (4RS,7SR)-4 b and (4RS,7RS)-4 b could be chromatographically separated through their tricarbonylchromium(0) complexes, followed by oxidative decomplexation. The identity of the title compounds and their precursors was established by elemental analyses and multinuclear NMR spectroscopic studies and in some cases additionally by crystal structure analyses. Compounds (4RS,7SR)-4 b, (4RS,7RS)-4 b, rac-9, and rac-10 were characterized for their olfactory properties, including GC-olfactory studies of the racemic compounds on a chiral stationary phase. As for the parent galaxolide stereoisomers 4 a, only one enantiomer of the silicon compounds (4RS,7SR)-4 b, (4RS,7RS)-4 b, rac-9, and rac-10, smelt upon enantioselective GC-olfactometry, which according to the elution sequence is assumed to be also (4S)-configured as in the case of the galaxolide stereoisomers. The disila-analogues (4S,7R)-4 b and (4S,7S)-4 b were, however, about one order of magnitude less intense in terms of their odor threshold than their parent carbon compounds (4S,7R)-4 a and (4S,7S)-4 a. The introduction of a 7-methylene group in disila-galaxolide (4 b→rac-9) improved the odor threshold by a factor of two. With the novel silicon-containing galaxolide derivatives, the presumed hydrophobic bulk binding pocket of the corresponding musk receptor(s) could be characterized in more detail, which could be useful for the design of novel musk odorants with an improved environmental profile.

Abstract
Coupling with inversion: Chiral diarylmethanol derivatives undergo a stereospecific nickel-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction with aryl Grignard reagents (see scheme). The reaction proceeds with inversion of configuration and high enantiospecificity. The method has been applied to the asymmetric synthesis of a triarylmethane-based anti-cancer compound.
