Abstract
Spin crossover complexes that reversibly interconvert between two stable states imitate a binary state of 0 and 1, delivering a promising possibility to address the data processing concept in smart materials. Thus, a comprehensive understanding of the modulation of magnetic transition between high spin and low spin and the factors responsible for stabilizing the spin states is an essential theme in modern materials design. In this context, the present review attempts to provide a concise outline of the design strategy employed at the molecular level for fine-tuning the spin-state switching in FeII -based Hofmann-type coordination polymers and their effects on the optical and magnetic response. In addition, development towards the nanoscale architectures of HCPs, i. e., in terms of nanoparticles and thin films, are emphasized to bridge the gap between the laboratory and reality.

Abstract
A MnIII spin crossover complex with atypical two-step hysteretic thermal switching at 74 K and 84 K shows rich structural-magnetic interplay and magnetic-field-induced spin state switching below 14 T with an onset below 5 T. The spin states, structures, and the nature of the phase transitions are elucidated via X-ray and magnetization measurements. An unusual intermediate phase containing four individual sites, where 1 / 4 are in a pure low spin state, is observed. The splitting of equivalent sites in the high temperature phase into four inequivalent sites is due to a structural reorganization involving a primary and a secondary symmetry-breaking order parameter that induces a crystal system change from orthorhombic→monoclinic and a cell doubling. Further cooling leads to a reconstructive phase transition and a monoclinic low-temperature phase with two inequivalent low-spin sites. The coupling between the order parameters is identified in the framework of Landau theory.

Abstract
Domain wall motion is detected for the first time during the transition to a ferroelastic and spin state ordered phase of a spin crossover complex. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction and resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS) revealed two distinct symmetry-breaking phase transitions in the mononuclear Mn3+ compound [Mn(3,5-diBr-sal2 (323))]BPh4 , 1. The first at 250 K, involves the space group change Cc→Pc and is thermodynamically continuous, while the second, Pc→P1 at 85 K, is discontinuous and related to spin crossover and spin state ordering. Stress-induced domain wall mobility was interpreted on the basis of a steep increase in acoustic loss immediately below the the Pc-P1 transition.

Abstract
Annealing [FeL2 ][BF4 ]2 ⋅2 H2 O (L=2,6-bis-[5-methyl-1H-pyrazol-3-yl]pyridine) affords an anhydrous material, which undergoes a spin transition at T1/2 =205 K with a 65 K thermal hysteresis loop. This occurs through a sequence of phase changes, which were monitored by powder diffraction in an earlier study. [CuL2 ][BF4 ]2 ⋅2 H2 O and [ZnL2 ][BF4 ]2 ⋅2 H2 O are not perfectly isostructural but, unlike the iron compound, they undergo single-crystal-to-single-crystal dehydration upon annealing. All the annealed compounds initially adopt the same tetragonal phase but undergo a phase change near room temperature upon re-cooling. The low-temperature phase of [CuL2 ][BF4 ]2 involves ordering of its Jahn-Teller distortion, to a monoclinic lattice with three unique cation sites. The zinc compound adopts a different, triclinic low-temperature phase with significant twisting of its coordination sphere, which unexpectedly becomes more pronounced as the crystal is cooled. Synchrotron powder diffraction data confirm that the structural changes in the anhydrous zinc complex are reproduced in the high-spin iron compound, before the onset of spin-crossover. This will contribute to the wide hysteresis in the spin transition of the iron complex. EPR spectra of copper-doped [Fe0.97 Cu0.03 L2 ][BF4 ]2 imply its low-spin phase contains two distinct cation environments in a 2:1 ratio.

Abstract
The unprecedented bimetallic 2D coordination polymer {Fe[(Hg(SCN)3 )2 ](4,4'-bipy)2 }n exhibits a thermal high-spin (HS)↔low-spin (LS) staircase-like conversion characterized by a multi-step dependence of the HS molar fraction γHS . Between the fully HS (γHS =1) and LS (γHS =0) phases, two steps associated with different ordering appear in terms of spin-state concentration waves (SSCW). On the γHS ≈0.5 step, a periodic SSCW forms with a HS-LS-HS-LS sequence. On the γHS ≈0.34 step, the 4D superspace crystallography structural refinement reveals an aperiodic SSCW, with a HS-LS sequence incommensurate with the molecular lattice. The formation of these different long-range spatially ordered structures of LS and HS states during the multi-step spin-crossover is discussed within the framework of "Devil's staircase"-type transitions. Spatially modulated phases are known in various types of materials but are uniquely related to molecular HS/LS bistability in this case.

Abstract
Six solvated salts of a mononuclear manganese(III) complex with a chelating hexadentate Schiff base ligand are reported. One member of the series, [MnL]PF(6)⋅0.5 CH(3)OH (1), shows a rare low-spin (LS) electronic configuration between 10-300 K. The remaining five salts, [MnL]NO(3)⋅C(2)H(5)OH(2), [MnL]BF(4)⋅C(2)H(5)OH(3), [MnL]CF(3)SO(3)⋅C(2)H(5)OH (4), [MnL]ClO(4)⋅C(2)H(5)OH (5) and [MnL]ClO(4)⋅0.5 CH(3)CN (6), all show gradual incomplete spin-crossover (SCO) behaviour. The structures of all were determined at 100 K, and also at 293 K in the case of 3-6. The LS salt [MnL]PF(6)⋅0.5 CH(3)OH is the only member of the series that does not exhibit strong hydrogen bonding. At 100 K two of the four SCO complexes (2 and 4) assemble into 1D hydrogen-bonded chains, which weaken or rupture on warming. The remaining SCO complexes 3, 5 and 6 do not form 1D hydrogen-bonded chains, but instead exhibit discrete hydrogen bonding between cation/counterion, cation/solvent or counterion/solvent and show no significant change on warming.
