Abstract
High-valence metal-oxo (M-O, M = Fe, Mn, etc.) species are well-known reaction intermediates that are responsible for a wide range of pivotal oxygenation reactions and water oxidation reactions in metalloenzymes. Although extensive efforts have been devoted to synthesizing and identifying such complexes in biomimetic studies, the structure-function relationship and related reaction mechanisms of these reaction intermediates remain elusive, especially for the cobalt-oxygen species. In the present manuscript, the calculated results demonstrate that the tetraamido macrocycle ligated cobalt complex, Co(O)(TAML) (1), behaves like a chameleon: the electronic structure varies from a cobalt(III)-oxyl species to a cobalt(IV)-oxo species when a Lewis acid Sc3+ salt coordinates or an acidic hydrocarbon attacks 1. The dichotomous correlation between the reaction rates of C-H bond activation by 1 and the bond dissociation energy (BDE) vs. the acidity (pKa) was rationalized for the first time by different reaction mechanisms: for normal C-H bond activation, the Co(III)-oxyl species directly activates the C-H bond via a hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) mechanism, whereas for acidic C-H bond activation, the Co(III)-oxyl species evolves to a Co(IV)-oxo species to increase the basicity of the oxygen to activate the acidic C-H bond, via a novel PCET(PT) mechanism (proton-coupled electron transfer with a PT(proton-transfer)-like transition state). These theoretical findings will enrich the knowledge of biomimetic metal-oxygen chemistry.

Abstract
A mononuclear nonheme manganese(IV)-oxo complex binding the Ce4+ ion, [(dpaq)MnIV (O)]+ -Ce4+ (1-Ce4+ ), was synthesized by reacting [(dpaq)MnIII (OH)]+ (2) with cerium ammonium nitrate (CAN). 1-Ce4+ was characterized using various spectroscopic techniques, such as UV/Vis, EPR, CSI-MS, resonance Raman, XANES, and EXAFS, showing an Mn-O bond distance of 1.69 Å with a resonance Raman band at 675 cm-1 . Electron-transfer and oxygen atom transfer reactivities of 1-Ce4+ were found to be greater than those of MnIV (O) intermediates binding redox-inactive metal ions (1-Mn+ ). This study reports the first example of a redox-active Ce4+ ion-bound MnIV -oxo complex and its spectroscopic characterization and chemical properties.

Abstract
M(H2 O2 ) adducts have been postulated as intermediates in biological and industrial processes; however, only one observable M(H2 O2 ) adduct has been reported, where M is redox-inactive zinc. Herein, direct solution-phase detection of an M(H2 O2 ) adduct with a redox-active metal, cobalt(II), is described. This Co(II) (H2 O2 ) compound is made observable by incorporating second-sphere hydrogen-bonding interactions between bound H2 O2 and the supporting ligand, a trianionic trisulfonamido ligand. Thermodynamics of H2 O2 binding and decay kinetics of the Co(II) (H2 O2 ) species are described, as well as the reaction of this Co(II) (H2 O2 ) species with Group 2 cations.

Abstract
Using the sterically hindered terphenyl-based carboxylate, the tetrameric Co(ii) complex [Co4(μ3-OH)4(μ-O2CAr(4F-Ph))2(μ-OTf)2(Py)4] () with an asymmetric cubane-type core has been synthesized and fully characterized by X-ray diffraction, UV-vis spectroscopy, and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. Interestingly, the cubane-type cobalt cluster with 3-chloroperoxybenzoic acid as the oxidant was found to be very effective in the epoxidation of a variety of olefins, including terminal olefins which are more challenging targeting substrates. Moreover, this catalytic system showed a fast reaction rate and high epoxide yields under mild conditions. Based on product analysis and Hammett studies, the use of peroxyphenylacetic acid as a mechanistic probe, H2(18)O-exchange experiments, and EPR studies, it has been proposed that multiple reactive cobalt-oxo species Co(V)[double bond, length as m-dash]O and Co(IV)[double bond, length as m-dash]O were involved in the olefin epoxidation.

Abstract
Redox-inactive metal ions and Brønsted acids that function as Lewis acids play pivotal roles in modulating the redox reactivity of metal-oxygen intermediates, such as metal-oxo and metal-peroxo complexes. The mechanisms of the oxidative CH bond cleavage of toluene derivatives, sulfoxidation of thioanisole derivatives, and epoxidation of styrene derivatives by mononuclear nonheme iron(IV)-oxo complexes in the presence of triflic acid (HOTf) and Sc(OTf)3 have been unified as rate-determining electron transfer coupled with binding of Lewis acids (HOTf and Sc(OTf)3 ) by iron(III)-oxo complexes. All logarithms of the observed second-order rate constants of Lewis acid-promoted oxidative CH bond cleavage, sulfoxidation, and epoxidation reactions of iron(IV)-oxo complexes exhibit remarkably unified correlations with the driving forces of proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) and metal ion-coupled electron transfer (MCET) in light of the Marcus theory of electron transfer when the differences in the formation constants of precursor complexes were taken into account. The binding of HOTf and Sc(OTf)3 to the metal-oxo moiety has been confirmed for Mn(IV) -oxo complexes. The enhancement of the electron-transfer reactivity of metal-oxo complexes by binding of Lewis acids increases with increasing the Lewis acidity of redox-inactive metal ions. Metal ions can also bind to mononuclear nonheme iron(III)-peroxo complexes, resulting in acceleration of the electron-transfer reduction but deceleration of the electron-transfer oxidation. Such a control on the reactivity of metal-oxygen intermediates by binding of Lewis acids provides valuable insight into the role of Ca(2+) in the oxidation of water to dioxygen by the oxygen-evolving complex in photosystem II.

Abstract
Redox-inactive metal ions play important roles in tuning chemical properties of metal-oxygen intermediates. Herein we report the effect of water molecules on the redox properties of a nonheme iron(III)-peroxo complex binding redox-inactive metal ions. The coordination of two water molecules to a Zn(2+) ion in (TMC)Fe(III) -(O2 )-Zn(CF3 SO3 )2 (1-Zn(2+) ) decreases the Lewis acidity of the Zn(2+) ion, resulting in the decrease of the one-electron oxidation and reduction potentials of 1-Zn(2+) . This further changes the reactivities of 1-Zn(2+) in oxidation and reduction reactions; no reaction occurred upon addition of an oxidant (e.g., cerium(IV) ammonium nitrate (CAN)) to 1-Zn(2+) , whereas 1-Zn(2+) coordinating two water molecules, (TMC)Fe(III) -(O2 )-Zn(CF3 SO3 )2 -(OH2 )2 [1-Zn(2+) -(OH2 )2 ], releases the O2 unit in the oxidation reaction. In the reduction reactions, 1-Zn(2+) was converted to its corresponding iron(IV)-oxo species upon addition of a reductant (e.g., a ferrocene derivative), whereas such a reaction occurred at a much slower rate in the case of 1-Zn(2+) -(OH2 )2 . The present results provide the first biomimetic example showing that water molecules at the active sites of metalloenzymes may participate in tuning the redox properties of metal-oxygen intermediates.

Abstract
Many iron-containing enzymes involve metal-oxygen oxidants to carry out O2-dependent transformation reactions. However, the selective oxidation of C-H and C=C bonds by biomimetic complexes using O2 remains a major challenge in bioinspired catalysis. The reactivity of iron-oxygen oxidants generated from an Fe(II)-benzilate complex of a facial N3 ligand were thus investigated. The complex reacted with O2 to form a nucleophilic oxidant, whereas an electrophilic oxidant, intercepted by external substrates, was generated in the presence of a Lewis acid. Based on the mechanistic studies, a nucleophilic Fe(II)-hydroperoxo species is proposed to form from the benzilate complex, which undergoes heterolytic O-O bond cleavage in the presence of a Lewis acid to generate an Fe(IV)-oxo-hydroxo oxidant. The electrophilic iron-oxygen oxidant selectively oxidizes sulfides to sulfoxides, alkenes to cis-diols, and it hydroxylates the C-H bonds of alkanes, including that of cyclohexane.

Abstract
The mechanism of water oxidation performed by a recently discovered cobalt complex [Co(Py5)(OH2)](ClO4)2 (1; Py5=2,6-(bis(bis-2-pyridyl)-methoxymethane)pyridine) was examined using quantum chemical models based on density functional theory. The computer models were first benchmarked against the experimental cyclic voltammetry data to identify the catalytically competent resting state of the catalyst, which was thought to contain a Co(IV) -oxyl complex. The electronic structure calculations suggest that the low-spin doublet state is energetically most favorable, but the catalytically most active species is the intermediate-spin quartet complex that is almost isoenergetic with the doublet state. The electronic structure of the quartet state shows significant spin polarization on the terminal oxygen atom, which is consistent with an intramolecular electron transfer from the oxygen to the metal. Based on the calculated spin densities, the formally [Co(IV) a bond and a half O] can be viewed as a biradicaloid [Co(II)-(⋅O⋅)](2+), that is, a cobalt-oxene moiety. This electronic structure is reminiscent of many other systems where similar electronic patterns were proposed to be responsible for the oxidative reactivity. In this context, this first-row transition-metal system constitutes a logical extension, because the oxyl-radical character is maximized by using the more easily accessible high-spin configurations in which two half-filled Co-dπ orbitals can work in concert to maximize the oxyl-radical character to ultimately afford a new reactive intermediate that can be characterized as carrying a biradicaloid oxene moiety with a formal oxidation state of zero. This conceptual proposal for the catalytically active species provides a plausible rationale for the remarkable oxidative reactivity.

Abstract
High-valent terminal metal-oxygen adducts are hypothesized to be the potent oxidizing reactants in late transition metal oxidation catalysis. In particular, examples of high-valent terminal nickel-oxygen adducts are scarce, meaning there is a dearth in the understanding of such oxidants. A monoanionic Ni(II)-bicarbonate complex has been found to react in a 1:1 ratio with the one-electron oxidant tris(4-bromophenyl)ammoniumyl hexachloroantimonate, yielding a thermally unstable intermediate in high yield (ca. 95%). Electronic absorption, electronic paramagnetic resonance, and X-ray absorption spectroscopies and density functional theory calculations confirm its description as a low-spin (S = 1/2), square planar Ni(III)-oxygen adduct. This rare example of a high-valent terminal nickel-oxygen complex performs oxidations of organic substrates, including 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol and triphenylphosphine, which are indicative of hydrogen atom abstraction and oxygen atom transfer reactivity, respectively.

Abstract
High-valent cobalt-oxo intermediates are proposed as reactive intermediates in a number of cobalt-complex-mediated oxidation reactions. Herein we report the spectroscopic capture of low-spin (S=1/2) Co(IV)-oxo species in the presence of redox-inactive metal ions, such as Sc(3+), Ce(3+), Y(3+), and Zn(2+), and the investigation of their reactivity in C-H bond activation and sulfoxidation reactions. Theoretical calculations predict that the binding of Lewis acidic metal ions to the cobalt-oxo core increases the electrophilicity of the oxygen atom, resulting in the redox tautomerism of a highly unstable [(TAML)Co(III)(O˙)](2-) species to a more stable [(TAML)Co(IV)(O)(M(n+))] core. The present report supports the proposed role of the redox-inactive metal ions in facilitating the formation of high-valent metal-oxo cores as a necessary step for oxygen evolution in chemistry and biology.

Abstract
Mononuclear metal-dioxygen species are key intermediates that are frequently observed in the catalytic cycles of dioxygen activation by metalloenzymes and their biomimetic compounds. In this work, a side-on cobalt(III)-peroxo complex bearing a macrocyclic N-tetramethylated cyclam (TMC) ligand, [Co(III) (15-TMC)(O2 )](+) , was synthesized and characterized with various spectroscopic methods. Upon protonation, this cobalt(III)-peroxo complex was cleanly converted into an end-on cobalt(III)-hydroperoxo complex, [Co(III) (15-TMC)(OOH)](2+) . The cobalt(III)-hydroperoxo complex was further converted to [Co(III) (15-TMC-CH2 -O)](2+) by hydroxylation of a methyl group of the 15-TMC ligand. Kinetic studies and (18) O-labeling experiments proposed that the aliphatic hydroxylation occurred via a Co(IV) -oxo (or Co(III) -oxyl) species, which was formed by OO bond homolysis of the cobalt(III)-hydroperoxo complex. In conclusion, we have shown the synthesis, structural and spectroscopic characterization, and reactivities of mononuclear cobalt complexes with peroxo, hydroperoxo, and oxo ligands.
