Abstract
A palladium catalysed C-C bond activation of cyclobutanones for the construction of alkenyl and carbonylated indanones has been developed. The in situ generated σ-alkylpalladium intermediate VIA C-C bond cleavage of cyclobutanone could be trapped with N-tosylhydrazones and carbon monoxide, respectively. The reactions were carried out under mild conditions with excellent functional group tolerance.

Abstract
Controlling the chemo- and regioselectivity of transition-metal-catalyzed C-C activation remains a great challenge. The transformations of benzocyclobutenones (BCBs) usually involve the cleavage of C1-C2 bond. In this work, an unprecedented highly selective cleavage of C1-C8 bond with the insertion of alkynes is achieved by using blocking strategy via Ni catalysis, providing an efficient method for synthesis of 1,8-disubstituted naphthalenes. Notably, the blocking group could be readily removed after the transformation.

Abstract
Low-valent cobalt complexes equipped with chiral ligands can efficiently promote highly enantioselective (3+2) cycloadditions of alkyne-tethered alkylidenecyclopropanes. The annulation allows to assemble bicyclic systems containing five-membered rings in good yields and with excellent enantiomeric ratios. We also present a mechanistic discussion based on experimental and computational data, which support the involvement of CoI /CoIII catalytic cycles.

Abstract
Transition-metal catalysis has become one of most important methods for constructing molecules with diverse architectures. Bridged polycyclic skeletons are often considered one of most challenging structures in organic synthesis. This Minireview summarizes the recent progress on synthesis of bridged polycyclic skeletons by transition-metal-catalyzed carbon-carbon bond-forming reaction. Four main ring-forming strategies including connection via olefin or carbonyl functionality, enolate intermediacy, C-H functionality, and aryl functionality are detailed and some effective methods are discussed with particular emphasis on reaction design and mechanism.

Abstract
Highly selective divergent coupling reactions of benzocyclobutenones and indoles, in which the chemoselectivity is controlled by catalysts, are reported herein. The substrates undergo C2(indole)-C8(benzocyclobutenone) coupling to produce benzylated indoles and benzo[b]carbazoles in the Ni- and Ru-catalyzed reactions. A completely different selectivity pattern C2(indole)-C2(benzocyclobutenone) coupling to form arylated indoles is observed in the Rh-catalyzed reaction. Preliminary mechanistic studies suggest C-H and C-C activations in the reaction pathway. Synthetic utility of this protocol is demonstrated by the selective synthesis of three different types of carbazoles from the representative products.

Abstract
Cyclobutanones hold a privileged role in enantioselective desymmetrization because their inherent ring strain allows for a variety of unusual reactions to occur. Current strategies include α-functionalization, rearrangement, and C-C bond activation to directly convert cyclobutanones into a wide range of enantiomerically enriched compounds, including many biologically significant scaffolds. This Minireview provides an overview of state-of-the-art methods that generate complexity from prochiral cyclobutanones in a single operation.

Abstract
A hybrid transition-metal/radical process is described that results in the addition of organozinc reagents and alkyl halides across alkenyl boron reagents in an enantioselective catalytic fashion. The reaction can be accomplished both intermolecularly and intramolecularly, providing useful product yields and high enantioselectivities in both manifolds.

Abstract
A palladium-catalyzed enantioselective intramolecular σ-bond cross-exchange between C-I and C-C bonds is realized, providing chiral indanones bearing an alkyl iodide group and an all-carbon quaternary stereocenter. Pd/TADDOL-derived phosphoramidite is found to be an efficient catalytic system for both C-C bond cleavage and alkyl iodide reductive elimination. In addition to aryl iodides, aryl bromides can also be used for this transformation in the presence of KI. Density-functional theory (DFT) calculation studies support the ring-opening of cyclobutanones occuring through an oxidative addition/reductive elimination process involving PdIV species.

Abstract
Ruthenium(II)biscarboxylate catalysis enabled selective C-C functionalizations by means of decarbamoylative C-C arylations. The versatility of the ruthenium(II) catalysis was reflected by widely applicable C-C arylations and C-C alkylations of aryl amides, as well as acids with modifiable pyrazoles, through facile organometallic C-C activation.

Abstract
A site-selective rhodium-catalyzed C-C activation of ring-fused cyclopentanones was achieved to afford efficient access to a range of spiroindanones. The use of bulky 2-amino-6-picoline as a cocatalyst is key to the excellent selectivity of this C-C bond cleavage in cyclopentanones.

Abstract
Herein an intramolecular nickel-catalyzed (4+2) coupling between cyclobutanones and allenes, by C-C cleavage, is reported. The reaction provides a distinct approach for accessing [3.2.2] bicyclic scaffolds which are challenging to prepare through conventional approaches. The reaction is efficient, chemoselective, and pH/redox neutral. Room temperature conditions and low catalyst loadings can be adopted. Excellent enantioselectivity is also achieved.

Abstract
We report the first example of an intermolecular [4+2] annulation of cyclobutylanilines with alkynes enabled by visible-light photocatalysis. Monocyclic and bicyclic cyclobutylanilines successfully undergo the annulation with terminal and internal alkynes to generate a wide variety of amine-substituted cyclohexenes including new hydrindan and decalin derivatives with good to excellent diastereoselectivity. The reaction is overall redox neutral with perfect atom economy.

Abstract
The first catalytic intermolecular proximal C1-C2 cleavage of benzocyclobutenones (BCB) without prior carbonyl activation or employing noble metals has been developed. This protocol operates at room temperature and is characterized by an exquisite chemo-, regio- and diastereoselectivity profile, constituting a unique platform for preparing an array of elusive carbocyclic skeletons.

Abstract
The lactone motif is ubiquitous in natural products and pharmaceuticals. The Tishchenko disproportionation of two aldehydes, a carbonyl hydroacylation, is an efficient and atom-economic access to lactones. However, these reaction types are limited to the transfer of a hydride to the accepting carbonyl group. The transfer of alkyl groups enabling the formation of CC bonds during the ester formation would be of significant interest. Reported herein is such asymmetric carbonyl carboacylation of aldehydes and ketones, thus affording complex bicyclic lactones in excellent enantioselectivities. The rhodium(I)-catalyzed transformation is induced by an enantiotopic CC bond activation of a cyclobutanone and the formed rhodacyclic intermediate reacts with aldehyde or ketone groups to give highly functionalized lactones.

Abstract
The selective functionalization of carbon-carbon σ bonds is a synthetic strategy that offers uncommon retrosynthetic disconnections. Despite progress in C-C activation and its great importance, the development of asymmetric reactions lags behind. Rhodium(I)-catalyzed selective oxidative additions into enantiotopic C-C bonds in cyclobutanones are reported. Even operating at a reaction temperature of 130 °C, the process is characterized by outstanding enantioselectivity with the e.r. generally greater than 99.5:0.5. The intermediate rhodacycle is shown to react with a wide variety of tethered olefins to deliver complex bicyclic ketones in high yields.
