Abstract
Enantiodiscrimination and enantioseparation are two highly important processes in chemistry, often performed by using NMR spectroscopy and chromatography. For a better understanding of the mechanistic details, the same system should be studied by both methods. In addition, isotropic and anisotropic NMR parameters should be obtained, the latter using alignment media so that residual dipolar couplings and chemical-shift anisotropies can be measured. Consequently, a chiral alignment medium was used for the first time in chiral gel-based capillary electrochromatography with the four stereoisomers of the antimalaria drug mefloquine as test compounds. Chromatographic data verify that enantiodiscrimination obtained with this alignment gel is caused by differences in the equilibrium constants related to associate formation. Hence, the chromatographic separation provides physicochemical data that form a basis for the understanding and optimization of alignment processes, and vice versa.

Abstract
Decagram quantities of enantiopure (+)-mefloquine have been produced via kinetic resolution of racemic mefloquine using a ROMP-gel supported chiral acyl hydroxamic acid resolving agent. The requisite monomer was prepared in a few synthetic steps without chromatography and polymerization was safely performed on a >30 gram scale under ambient conditions. The reagent was readily regenerated and reused multiple times for the resolution of 150 grams of (±)-mefloquine and other chiral N-heterocylces.

Abstract
The hydrophobic effect plays a major role in a variety of important phenomena in chemistry, materials science and biology, for instance in protein folding and protein-ligand interactions. Studies--performed within cavities of the unique metal oxide based porous capsules of the type {(pentagon)12(linker)30}≡{(W)W5}12{Mo2(ligand)}30 with different acetate/water ligand ratios--have provided unprecedented results revealing segregation/repellency of the encapsulated "water" from the internal hydrophobic ligand walls of the capsules, while the disordered water molecules, interacting strongly with each other via hydrogen bonding, form in all investigated cases the same type of spherical shell. The present results can be (formally) compared--but only regarding the repellency effect--with the amazing "action" of the (super)hydrophobic Lotus (Nelumbo) leaves, which are self-cleaning based on water repellency resulting in the formation of water droplets picking up dirt. The present results were obtained by constructing deliberately suitable hydrophobic interiors within the mentioned capsules.

Abstract
Mefloquine (MQ), an antimalarial drug, is used as a racemate of (-)- and (+)-enantiomers, which display biological differences. The question concerning their exact configuration remains a matter of debate. The absolute configuration of the two MQ enantiomers as well as their biological activity has been established, thus confirming the importance of the stereochemistry in the design of MQ analogues that have fewer adverse side effects.
