Abstract
A ferrocene surfactant can be switched between single and double head form (FcN+ C12 /Fc+ N+ C12 ) triggered by redox reaction. FcN+ C12 can neither stabilize an O/W emulsion alone nor an oil-in-dispersion emulsion in combination with alumina nanoparticles due to the steric hindrance of the ferrocene group. However, such steric hindrance can be overcome by increasing the charge density in Fc+ N+ C12 , so that oil-in-dispersion emulsions can be co-stabilized by Fc+ N+ C12 and alumina nanoparticles at very low concentrations (1×10-7 M (≈50 ppb) and 0.001 wt %, respectively). Not only can reversible formation/destabilization of oil-in-dispersion emulsions be achieved by redox reaction, but also reversible transformation between oil-in-dispersion emulsions and Pickering emulsions can be obtained through reversing the charge of alumina particles by adjusting the pH. The results provide a new protocol for the design of surfactants for stabilization of smart oil-in-dispersion emulsions.

Abstract
Biocatalysis is increasingly being explored for the sustainable development of green industry. Though enzymes show great industrial potential with their high efficiency, specificity, and selectivity, they suffer from poor usability and stability under abiological conditions. To solve these problems, researchers have fabricated nano- and micro-sized biocatalytic reactors based on the self-assembly of various polymers, leading to highly stable, functional, and reusable biocatalytic systems. This Review highlights recent progress in self-assembled polymeric nano- and microreactors for biocatalytic synthesis, including polymersomes, reverse micelles, polymer emulsions, Pickering emulsions, and static emulsions. We categorize these reactors into monophasic and biphasic systems and discuss their structural characteristics and latest successes with representative examples. We also consider the challenges and potential solutions associated with the future development of this field.

Abstract
Widely pH-stable emulsions configured by solid emulsifiers with high chemical stabilities and anti-corrosion properties under strong acid or alkaline conditions are highly sought after for practical and wide application of Pickering interfacial catalysis. Herein, a unique strategy was reported for synthesis of a widely pH-stable and novel emulsifier by passivating the pH-responsive sites on graphene oxide nanoribbon (GONR) surface using ionic liquid (IL). The suitable wettability of GONR-IL was derived from the positive binding energy between IL and water, which ensured the stability of the emulsion in a wide pH range. Benefiting from the passivated surface chemistry of GONR, the emulsion microreactor stabilized by GONR-IL exhibited a remarkable stability over a wide range of pH values. A GONR-IL-supported Pd catalyst stabilized at the toluene-water interface achieved an excellent emulsion catalytic activity for benzyl alcohol oxidation (conversion of 92 %), which was exceedingly higher than that of Pd/GONR (<1 %), Pd/CNTs-IL (51 %), or Pd/GO-IL (8 %).

Abstract
Pickering emulsions, foams, bubbles, and marbles are dispersions of two immiscible liquids or of a liquid and a gas stabilized by surface-active colloidal particles. These systems can be used for engineering liquid-liquid-solid and gas-liquid-solid microreactors for multiphase reactions. They constitute original platforms for reengineering multiphase reactors towards a higher degree of sustainability. This Review provides a systematic overview on the recent progress of liquid-liquid and gas-liquid dispersions stabilized by solid particles as microreactors for engineering eco-efficient reactions, with emphasis on biobased reagents. Physicochemical driving parameters, challenges, and strategies to (de)stabilize dispersions for product recovery/catalyst recycling are discussed. Advanced concepts such as cascade and continuous flow reactions, compartmentalization of incompatible reagents, and multiscale computational methods for accelerating particle discovery are also addressed.

Abstract
Nature provides much inspiration for the design of multistep conversion processes, with numerous reactions running simultaneously and without interference in cells, for example. A key challenge in mimicking nature's strategies is to compartmentalize incompatible reagents and catalysts, for example, for tandem catalysis. Here, we present a new strategy for antagonistic catalyst compartmentalization. The synthesis of bifunctional Janus catalyst particles carrying acid and base groups on the particle's opposite patches is reported as is their application as acid-base catalysts in oil/water emulsions. The synthesis strategy involved the use of monodisperse, hydrophobic and amine-functionalized silica particles (SiO2 -NH2 -OSi(CH3 )3 ) to prepare an oil-in-water Pickering emulsion (PE) with molten paraffin wax. After solidification, the exposed patch of the silica particles was selectively etched and refunctionalized with acid groups to yield acid-base Janus particles (Janus A-B). These materials were successfully applied in biphasic Pickering interfacial catalysis for the tandem dehydration-Knoevenagel condensation of fructose to 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural-2-diethylmalonate (5-HMF-DEM) in a water/4-propylguaiacol PE. The results demonstrate the advantage of rapid extraction of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), a prominent platform molecule prone to side product formation in acidic media. A simple strategy to tune the acid/base balance using PE with both Janus A-B and monofunctional SiO2 -NH2 -OSi(CH3 )3 base catalysts proved effective for antagonistic tandem catalysis.

Abstract
A novel charge-reversible surfactant, (CH3 )2 N-(CH2 )10 COONa, was designed and synthesized, which together with silica nanoparticles can stabilize a smart n-octane-in-water emulsion responsive to pH. At high pH (9.3) the surfactant is anionic carboxylate, which together with the negatively charged silica nanoparticles co-stabilize flowable oil-in-dispersion emulsions, whereas at low pH (4.1) it is turned to cationic form by forming amine salt which can hydrophobize in situ the negatively charged silica nanoparticles to stabilize viscous oil-in-water (O/W) Pickering emulsions. At neutral pH (7.5), however, this surfactant is converted to zwitterionic form, which only weakly hydrophobises the silica particles to stabilize O/W Pickering emulsions of large droplet size. Moreover, demulsification can be achieved rapidly triggered by pH. With this strategy particles can be controlled either dispersed in water or adsorbed at the oil-water interface endowing emulsions with the capacity for intelligent and precise control of stability as well as viscosity and droplet size.

Abstract
Multienzyme cascade biocatalysis is an efficient synthetic process, avoiding the isolation/purification of intermediates and shifting the reaction equilibrium to the product side.. However, multienzyme systems are often limited by their incompatibility and cross-reactivity. Herein, we report a multi-responsive emulsion to proceed multienzyme reactions sequentially for high reactivity. The emulsion is achieved using a CO2 , pH, and thermo-responsive block copolymer as a stabilizer, allowing the on-demand control of emulsion morphology and phase composition. Applying this system to a three-step cascade reaction enables the individual optimal condition for each enzyme, and a high overall conversion (ca. 97 % of the calculated limit) is thereby obtained. Moreover, the multi-responsiveness of the emulsion allows the facile and separate yielding/recycling of products, polymers and active enzymes. Besides, the system could be scaled up with a good yield.

Abstract
Newly structured pH-responsive smart surfactants (N+ -(n)-N, n=14, 16) from alkyl trimethylammonium bromides are reported. In neutral and alkaline media N+ -(n)-N behaves as a normal cationic surfactant and stabilizes conventional emulsions alone, as well as Pickering emulsions and oil-in-dispersion emulsions together with oppositely and similarly charged nanoparticles, respectively. In acidic media N+ -(n)-N becomes a hydrophilic Bola-type surfactant, N+ -(n)-NH+ , and is an inferior emulsifier either when used alone or together with charged nanoparticles, resulting in demulsification. N+ -(n)-NH+ returns to the aqueous phase alone or together with nanoparticles after demulsification without contaminating the oil phase, and the aqueous phase can be recycled when triggered by pH change. This protocol is a green process and leads to preparation of various temporarily stable emulsions which are often used in emulsion polymerization, heterogeneous catalysis, and oil transportation.

Abstract
Pickering emulsion systems have emerged as platforms for the synthesis of organic molecules in biphasic biocatalysis. Herein, the catalytic performance was evaluated for biotransformation using whole cells exemplified for the dehydration of n-octanaloxime to n-octanenitrile catalysed by an aldoxime dehydratase (OxdB) overexpressed in E. coli. This study was carried out in Pickering emulsions stabilised solely with silica particles of different hydrophobicity. We correlate, for the first time, the properties of the emulsions with the conversion of the reaction, thus gaining an insight into the impact of the particle wettability and particle concentration. When comparing two emulsions of different type with similar stability and droplet diameter, the oil-in-water (o/w) system displayed a higher conversion than the water-in-oil (w/o) system, despite the conversion in both cases being higher than that in a "classic" two-phase system. Furthermore, an increase in particle concentration prior to emulsification resulted in an increase of the interfacial area and hence a higher conversion.

Abstract
Sulfoethylated lignin (SEKL) polymeric surfactant and sulfoethylated lignin nanoparticles (N-SEKL) with a size of 750±50 nm are produced by using a facile green process involving a solvent-free reaction and acidification-based fractionation. SEKL forms a liquid-like conventional emulsion with low viscosity that has temporary stability (5 h) at pH 7. However, N-SEKL forms a gel-like, motionless, and ultra-stable Pickering emulsion through a network of interactions between N-SEKL particles, which creates steric hindrance among the oil droplets at pH 3. The deposition of SEKL and N-SEKL on the oil surface is monitored by a using a quartz crystal microbalance. Experimentally, the formation of emulsions at pH 7 is found to be reversible owing to the low adsorption energy ΔE of SEKL on the oil droplet (ΔE≈15 kB T), which is determined with the help of three-phase contact-angle measurements. However, the high desorption energy (ΔE≈6.0×105 kB T) of N-SEKL makes it irreversibly adsorb on the oil droplets. SEKL is too hydrophilic to attach to the oil interface (ΔE≈0) and thus does not facilitate emulsion formation at pH 11. Therefore, it is feasible to apply SEKL for the formulation of Pickering or non-Pickering emulsions in the form of nanoparticles or polymeric surfactants, depending on the targeted application.

Abstract
Tandem catalysis combines multiple conversion steps, catalysts, and reagents in one reaction medium, offering the potential to reduce waste and time. In this study, Pickering emulsions-emulsions stabilized by solid particles-are used as easy-to-prepare and bioinspired, compartmentalized reaction media for tandem catalysis. Making use of simple and inexpensive acid and base catalysts, the strategy of compartmentalization of two noncompatible catalysts in both phases of the emulsion is demonstrated by using the deacetalization-Knoevenagel condensation reaction of benzaldehyde dimethyl acetal as a probe reaction. In contrast to simple biphasic systems, which do not allow for tandem catalysis and show instantaneous quenching of the acid and base catalysts, the Pickering emulsions show efficient antagonistic tandem catalysis and give the desired product in high yield, as a result of an increased interfacial area and suppressed mutual destruction of the acid and base catalysts.

Abstract
The quest for sustainable solvents is currently a matter of intense research and development, as solvents significantly contribute heavily to the waste generated by chemical industries. Cyclopentyl methyl ether (CPME) is a promising eco-friendly solvent with valuable properties such as low peroxide formation rate, stability under basic and acidic conditions, and relatively high boiling point. This Review discusses the potential use of CPME for applications in biotechnology (e.g., biotransformations, as solvent or cosolvent), biorefineries, and bioeconomy (e.g., for furan synthesis or as an extractive agent in liquid-liquid separations), as well as for other purposes, such as chromatography or peptide synthesis. Although CPME is currently produced by petrochemical means with a remarkably high atom economy, its biogenic production can be envisaged from substrates such as cyclopentanol or cyclopentanone, which can be derived from furfural or from (bio-based) adipic acid, respectively. The combination of the promising properties of CPME as a (co)solvent with a future (economic) biogenic origin would be advantageous for setting strategies aligned with the sustainable chemistry principles.

Abstract
Pickering emulsions, also known as particle stabilized emulsions, are one kind of extremely important emulsion for both fundamental research and practical applications. Many colloidal particles have been utilized as emulsifiers to stabilize Pickering emulsions. However, the most challenging issue is preparing Pickering emulsions with highly hydrophilic particles, because their adsorption onto oil-water interfaces is either thermodynamically or kinetically unfavorable. Although several strategies have been developed to overcome the poor ability of the hydrophilic particles to stabilize the emulsions, surface modification and functionalization of the hydrophilic particles or a change in solvent (i.e. water phase) conditions such as pH and ionic strength is required. Herein, we present an effective and not yet explored strategy to stabilize Pickering emulsions with unmodified highly hydrophilic particles, strikingly, without changing the solvent conditions. The innovative aspect of the strategy presented here is the unconventional dispersion of hydrophilic particles in an oil phase before emulsification, while the results experimentally demonstrate the theoretical calculations predicted more than a decade ago. This study will promote the diversity of Pickering emulsions and expand their real-world applications.

Abstract
Novel aqueous multiphase systems (MuPSs) formed by quaternary mixtures composed of cholinium-based ionic liquids (ILs), polymers, inorganic salts, and water are reported herein. The influence of several ILs, polymers, and salts was studied, demonstrating that a triple salting-out is a required phenomenon to prepare MuPSs. The respective phase diagrams and "tie-surfaces" were determined, followed by the evaluation of the effect of temperature. Finally, the remarkable ability of IL-based MuPSs to selectively separate mixtures of textile dyes is shown.

Abstract
Rational design of the surface properties of heterogeneous catalysts can boost the interfacial activity in biphasic reactions through the generation of Pickering emulsions. This concept, termed Pickering interfacial catalysis (PIC), has shown promising credentials in acid-catalyzed transesterification, ester hydrolysis, acetalization, etherification, and alkylation reactions. PIC has now been applied to the efficient, solvent-free hydrolysis of the triglyceride glyceryl trilaurate to lauric acid, catalyzed by Aquivion perfluorosulfonic superacid at mild conditions (100 °C and ambient pressure).

Abstract
Cyclization of citronellal is a necessary intermediate step to produce the important flavor chemical (-)-menthol. Here, a continuous-flow Pickering emulsion (FPE) strategy for selective cyclization of citronellal to (-)-isopulegol by using water droplets hosting a heteropolyacid (HPA) catalyst to fill a column reactor is demonstrated. Owing to the large liquid-liquid interface and the excellent confinement ability of droplets toward HPA, the FPE system exhibited a much higher catalysis efficiency than its batch counterpart (2-5-fold) and an excellent durability (two months). Moreover, a remarkably enhanced selectivity was observed from 34.8 % for batch reactions to 64 % for the FPE reactions. It was found that the water droplet size and the flow rate significantly impact the catalysis selectivity and efficiency. This study not only represents an unprecedented and sustainable process for the selective cyclization of citronellal but also demonstrates a new flow-interface catalysis effect that can be useful for designing innovative catalysis systems in the future.

Abstract
Surface-active artificial enzymes (SAEs) are designed and constructed by a general and novel strategy. These SAEs can simultaneously stabilize Pickering emulsions and catalyze biphasic biotransformation with superior enzymatic stability and good re-usability; for example, for the interfacial conversion of hydrophobic p-nitrophenyl butyrate into yellow water-soluble p-nitrophenolate catalyzed by esterase-mimic SAE.

Abstract
Continuous generation of hierarchical and asymmetric bijels based on solvent-transfer-induced phase separation (STRIPS) is demonstrated. In STRIPS, phase separation is induced by solvent extraction from an initially homogeneous ternary mixture, and bicontinuous morphology is stabilized by inter-facial attachment of nano-particles, which are functionalized in situ. STRIPS allows stable bijel formation from a wide variety of liquids and particles.
