Using Light to Modify the Selectivity of Transition Metal Catalysed Transformations

Light has a remarkable and often unique ability to promote chemical reactions. In combination with transition metal catalysis, it offers exciting opportunities to modify catalyst function in a non‐invasive manner, most frequently being reported to switch on or accelerate reactions that do not occur in the dark. However, the ability to completely change reactivity or selectivity between two different reaction outcomes is considerably less common. In this Minireview we bring together examples of this concept and highlight their mechanistically distinct approaches. Our overview demonstrates how these non‐natural, photo‐switchable systems provide key fundamental mechanistic insights, enhancing our understanding and stimulating development of new catalytic activity, and how this might lead to tangible applications, impacting fields such as polymer chemistry.

Multi-Photocatalyst Cascades: Merging Singlet Oxygen Photooxygenations with Photoredox Catalysis for the Synthesis of Alkaloid Frameworks

The development of photocascades that rapidly transform simple and readily accessible furan substrates into polycyclic alkaloid frameworks or erythrina natural products is described. Each of the sequences developed makes use of photocatalyzed energy transfer processes, which generate singlet oxygen, to set up the substrates for the second photocatalyzed reaction, wherein electron transfer generates carbon-centered radicals for the cyclizations that give the final complex frameworks. A chemical switch has been developed that can "switch off" one photocatalyst; thus, allowing a second photocatalyst to take over control of the sequence. As a corollary, this strategy represents the first time it has been possible to use multiple photocatalysts in photocascades, and, as such, it expands significantly the reactions that can be included in such cascades and the order in which they can be initiated.

Reactivity and Selectivity in Ruthenium Sulfur-Chelated Diiodo Catalysts

A trifluoromethyl sulfur-chelated ruthenium benzylidene, Ru-S-CF₃ -I, was synthesized and characterized. This latent precatalyst provides a distinct activity and selectivity profiles for olefin metathesis reactions depending on the substrate. For example, 1,3-divinyl-hexahydropentalene derivatives were efficiently obtained by ring-opening metathesis (ROM) of dicyclopentadiene (DCPD). Ru-S-CF₃ -I also presented a much more effective photoisomerization process from the inactive cis-diiodo to the active trans-diiodo configuration after exposure to 510 nm (green light), allowing for a wide scope of photoinduced olefin metathesis reactions. DFT calculations suggest a faster formation and enhanced stability of the active trans-diiodo species of Ru-S-CF₃ -I compared with Ru-S-Ph-I, explaining its higher reactivity. In addition, the photochemical release of chloride anions by irradiation of Cl-BODIPY in the presence of DCPD derivatives with diiodo Ru benzylidenes, led to in situ generation of chloride complexes, which quickly produced the corresponding cross-linked polymers. Thus, novel selective pathways that use visible light to guide olefin metathesis based synthetic sequences is presented.
