Designed Enclosure Enables Guest Binding Within the 4200 Å3Cavity of a Self-Assembled Cube

A Family of Heterobimetallic Cubes Shows Spin-Crossover Behaviour Near Room Temperature

Using 4-(4'-pyridyl)aniline as a simple organic building block in combination with three different aldehyde components together with metal(II) salts gave three different Fe8 Pt6 -cubes and their corresponding Zn8 Pt6 analogues by employing the subcomponent self-assembly approach. Whereas the use of zinc(II) salts gave rise to diamagnetic cages, iron(II) salts yielded metallosupramolecular cages that show spin-crossover behaviour in solution. The spin-transition temperature T1/2 depends on the incorporated aldehyde component, giving a construction kit for the deliberate synthesis of spin-crossover compounds with tailored transition properties. Incorporation of 4-thiazolecarbaldehyde or N-methyl-2-imidazole-carbaldehyde yielded cages that undergo spin-crossover around room temperature whereas the cage obtained using 1H-4-imidazolecarbaldehyde shows a spin-transition at low temperatures. Three new structures were characterized by synchrotron X-ray diffraction and all structures were characterized by mass spectrometry, NMR and UV/Vis spectroscopy.

Multi-functional, Low Symmetry Pd2 L4 Nanocage Libraries*

Although many impressive metallo-supramolecular architectures have been reported, they tend towards high symmetry structures and avoid extraneous functionality to ensure high fidelity in the self-assembly process. This minimalist approach, however, limits the range of accessible structures and thus their potential applications. Herein is described the synthesis of a family of ditopic ligands wherein the ligand scaffolds are both low symmetry and incorporate exohedral functional moieties. Key to this design is the use of CuI -catalysed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) chemistry, as the triazole is capable of acting as both a coordinating heterocycle and a tether between the ligand framework and functional unit simultaneously. A common precursor was used to generate ligands with various functionalities, allowing control of electronic properties whilst maintaining the core structure of the resultant cis-Pd2 L4 nanocage assemblies. The isostructural nature of the scaffold frameworks enabled formation of combinatorial libraries from the self-assembly of ligand mixtures, generating a statistical mixture of multi-functional, low symmetry architectures.

Stimuli-Responsive Self-Sorting Hybrid Hydrogen-Bonded/Metal-Coordinated Cage

The self-assembly of a unique molecular container is reported: a hybrid hydrogen-bonded/metal-coordinated cage where both hydrogen-bonding and metal-coordination form the crucial part of the topology. The hybrid cage was prepared combining hydrogen-bonded rosette motif and palladium(II)/platinum(II) coordination to a pyridine ligand. It was also shown that the hybrid cage could be prepared by integrative self-sorting from simple components. For the first time the genuine dual character of the hybrid cage was manifested as both self-assembling parts responded selectively to different stimuli (such as phosphine and cyanurate), which resulted in the disassembly of the cage.

Face-Directed Assembly of Molecular Cubes: In Situ Substitution of a Predetermined Concave Cluster

Systematic design and self-assembly of metal-organic polyhedra with predictable configurations has been a long-standing challenge in crystal engineering. Herein a concave polyoxovanadate cluster, [V₆ O₆ (OCH₃ )₉ (SO₄ )₄ ]^5- , which can be generated in situ under specific reaction conditions, is reported. Based on this cluster, a potential trivalent molecular building block, [V₆ O₆ (OCH₃ )₉ (SO₄ )(CO₂ )₃ ]^2- , can be obtained by the bridging-ligand-substitution strategy and it possesses appropriate angle information for the design of molecular cubes. Utilizing the face-directed assembly of the trivalent molecular building block and a diverse set of tetratopic carboxylate linkers, a series of metal-organic cubes (VMOC-1-VMOC-5) with the same topology but different functionalities and dimensions were designed and constructed. An inclusion study using VMOC-3 shows that they are potential molecular receptors for selective capture of size-matching polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon guest molecules.

Better Together: Functional Heterobimetallic Macrocyclic and Cage-like Assemblies

Metallosupramolecular chemistry has attracted the interest of generations of researches due to the versatile properties and functionalities of oligonuclear coordination complexes. Quite a number of different discrete cages were investigated, mostly consisting of only one type of ligand and one type of metal cation. Looking for ever more complex structures, heterobimetallic complexes became more and more attractive, as they give access to new structural motifs and functions. In the last years substantial success has been made in the design and synthesis of cages consisting of more than one type of metal cations, and a rapidly growing number of functional materials has appeared in the literature. This Minireview describes recent developments in the field of discrete heterometallic macrocycles and cages focusing on functional materials that have been used as host‐systems or as magnetic, photo‐active, redox‐active, and even catalytically active materials.

Triple Self-Sorting in Constitutional Dynamic Networks: Parallel Generation of Imine-Based CuI , FeII , and ZnII Complexes

Three imine-based metal complexes, having no overlap in terms of their compositions, have been simultaneously generated from the self-sorting of a constitutional dynamic library (CDL) containing three amines, three aldehydes, and three metal salts. The hierarchical ordering of the stability of the three metal complexes assembled and the leveraging of the antagonistic and agonistic relationships existing between the constituents within the constitutional dynamic network corresponding to the CDL were pivotal in achieving the sorting. Examination of the process by NMR spectroscopy showed that the self-sorting of the FeII and ZnII complexes depended on an interplay between the thermodynamic driving forces and a kinetic trap involved in their assembly. These results also exemplify the concept of "simplexity"-the fact that the output of a self-assembling system may be simplified by increasing its initial compositional complexity-as the two complexes could self-sort only in the presence of the third pair of organic components, those of the CuI complex.

Anilate Tethered Neutral Tetrahedral Pd(II) Cages Exhibiting Selective Encapsulation of Xylenes and Mesitylene

The design of porous materials for the recognition of multiple hydrocarbons is highly desirable for the energy-efficient separation and recognition of chemical feedstock. Herein, three new iso-structural porous discrete metal-organic cages of formula {[Pd₃ (NiPr)₃ PO]₄ (R-AN)₆ } (R-AN=anilate linkers) for the selective recognition of substituted aromatic hydrocarbons are reported. The tetrahedral cages 1, 2, and 3 containing anilate, chloranilate, and bromanilate linkers exhibited selective encapsulation of mesitylene, o-xylene, and p-xylene, respectively, over other analogous aromatic hydrocarbons. These selective encapsulations were driven by the variations in the portal diameters present at each of these cages and their interactions with the hydrocarbon guests. These observations are supported by mass spectrometry, NMR studies, and theoretical binding-energy calculations.

Host-Guest Chemistry of Truncated Tetrahedral Imine Cages with Ammonium Ions

Three shape-persistent [4+4] imine cages with truncated tetrahedral geometry with different window sizes were studied as hosts for the encapsulation of tetra-n-alkylammonium salts of various bulkiness. In various solvents the cages behave differently. For instance, in dichloromethane the cage with smallest window size takes up NEt4+ but not NMe4+, which is in contrast to the two cages with larger windows hosting both ions. To find out the reason for this, kinetic experiments were carried out to determine the velocity of uptake but also to deduce the activation barriers for these processes. To support the experimental results, calculations for the guest uptakes have been performed by molecular mechanics' simulations. Finally, the complexation of pharmaceutical interested compounds, such as acetylcholine, muscarine or denatonium have been determined by NMR experiments.

Dynamic Complex-to-Complex Transformations of Heterobimetallic Systems Influence the Cage Structure or Spin State of Iron(II) Ions

Two new heterobimetallic cages, a trigonal‐bipyramidal and a cubic one, were assembled from the same mononuclear metalloligand by adopting the molecular library approach, using iron(II) and palladium(II) building blocks. The ligand system was designed to readily assemble through subcomponent self‐assembly. It allowed the introduction of steric strain at the iron(II) centres, which stabilizes its paramagnetic high‐spin state. This steric strain was utilized to drive dynamic complex‐to‐complex transformations with both the metalloligand and heterobimetallic cages. Addition of sterically less crowded subcomponents as a chemical stimulus transformed all complexes to their previously reported low‐spin analogues. The metalloligand and bipyramid incorporated the new building block more readily than the cubic cage, probably because the geometric structure of the sterically crowded metalloligand favours the cube formation. Furthermore it was possible to provoke structural transformations upon addition of more favourable chelating ligands, converting the cubic structures into bipyramidal ones.

Fluorometric Recognition of Nucleotides within a Water-Soluble Tetrahedral Capsule

The design of aqueous probes and binders for complex, biologically relevant anions presents a key challenge in supramolecular chemistry. Herein, a tetrahedral assembly with cationic faces and corners is reported that is capable of discriminating between anionic and neutral guests in water. Electrostatic repulsion between subcomponents can be overcome by the addition of an anionic template, or generating a robust covalent framework by incorporating tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (TREN). The resultant TREN-capped, water-soluble, fluorescent cage binds mono- and poly-phosphoric esters, including nucleotides. Its covalent skeleton renders it stable at micromolar concentrations in water, enabling the fluorometric detection of biologically relevant guests in an aqueous environment. Selective supramolecular encapsulants, such as 1, could enable new sensing applications, such as recognition of toxins and drugs, under biological conditions.

Self-Assembled PdII6 Molecular Spheroids and Their Proton Conduction Property

A series of molecular spheroids (SP1-SP4) was synthesized using pseudolinear bisimidazole and bisbenzimidazole donors in combination with Pd(NO₃)₂ acceptor via coordination-driven self-assembly. They were characterized by NMR and mass spectrometry, and the solid-state structures of SP1 and SP3 were confirmed by X-ray diffraction. Crystal packing revealed the presence of molecular channels with water molecules in the channels as proton source. All the systems showed proton conductivity across a wide range of temperature and relative humidity. Furthermore, the mode of proton conduction in these molecular spheroids was explored by performing a control experiment using 2,4-dinitrophenol molecule, which indicates that the proton conductivity in the present case increases with increasing surface area of these molecular spheroids.

Side-Chain-Directed Dispersion of MoS2 Nanosheets by V-Shaped Polyaromatic Compounds

Bulk molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂ ) itself is virtually insoluble in common organic solvents because of the tight stacks of multiple MoS₂ nanosheets. Here we report that V-shaped polyaromatic compounds with non-ionic side chains can efficiently exfoliate and disperse the inorganic nanosheets. Simple grinding and sonication (less than total 1 h) of MoS₂ powder with the V-shaped compounds gave rise to large MoS₂ nanosheets highly dispersed in NMP through efficient host-guest S-π interactions. DLS and AFM analyses revealed that the lateral sizes (ca. 150-270 nm) and thicknesses (ca. 2-8 nm) of the products depend on the identity of the non-ionic side chains on the V-shaped dispersant.

Controlled Orthogonal Self-Assembly of Heterometal-Decorated Coordination Cages

Multiple orthogonal coordinative interactions were utilized to construct heterometal-decorated tetrahedral cages from in situ formed trinuclear Zr^IV clusters through the combination with other metal ions such as Cu^II or Pd^II . Through effective use of the hard/soft acid/base principle, the orthogonal self-assembly process of Zr-bpydc-CuCl₂ (H₂ bpydc=2,2-bipyridine-5,5-dicarboxylic acid) can be finely controlled using three strategies: post-synthetic metallization, a stepwise metalloligand approach, or a one-pot reaction.

Employing Core-Shell Quantum Dots as Triplet Sensitizers for Photon Upconversion

A new family of surface-functionalized CdSe/ZnS core-shell quantum dots (csQD) has been developed, which work as triplet sensitizers for triplet-triplet annihilation-based photon upconversion (TTA-UC). The surface modification of csQD with acceptor molecules plays a key role in the efficient relay of the excited energy of csQD to emitter molecules in the bulk solution, where the generated emitter triplets undergo triplet-triplet annihilation that leads to photon upconversion. Interestingly, improved UC properties were achieved with the core-shell QDs compared with core-only CdSe QDs (cQD). The threshold excitation intensity, which is defined as the necessary irradiance to achieve efficient TTA process, decreases by more than a factor of four. Furthermore, the total UC quantum yield is enhanced more than 50-fold. These enhancements should be derived from better optical properties of csQD, in which the non-radiative surface recombination sites are passivated by the shell layer with wider bandgap.

Peripheral Templation Generates an M(II) 6 L4 Guest-Binding Capsule

Pseudo‐octahedral M^II₆L₄ capsules result from the subcomponent self‐assembly of 2‐formylphenanthroline, threefold‐symmetric triamines, and octahedral metal ions. Whereas neutral tetrahedral guests and most of the anions investigated were observed to bind within the central cavity, tetraphenylborate anions bound on the outside, with one phenyl ring pointing into the cavity. This binding configuration is promoted by the complementary arrangement of the phenyl rings of the intercalated guest between the phenanthroline units of the host. The peripherally bound, rapidly exchanging tetraphenylborate anions were found to template an otherwise inaccessible capsular structure in a manner usually associated with slow‐exchanging, centrally bound agents. Once formed, this cage was able to bind guests in its central cavity.
