Abstract
Symmetry plays an essential role in the fundamental properties of a physical system. In this work, we report on the realization of tunable single-mode polariton lasing from highly excited Rydberg states via symmetry engineering. By breaking the symmetry of the polaritonic wave function through potential wells and controlling the spatial overlap between the gain region and the eigen mode, we are able to generate single-mode polariton lasing, reversibly and dynamically, from quantized polariton states. Increasing the asymmetry of the potential well, single-mode lasing can be achieved even for the highly excited Rydberg state with a principle quantum number of N = 14. Moreover, as a result of the excellent reservoir-eigen mode overlap and efficient spatial confinement, the threshold of lasing can be reduced up to 6 orders of magnitude, compared with those conventional pumping schemes. Our results present a new strategy toward the realization of thresholdless polariton lasing with dynamical tunability.

Abstract
Thanks to the narrow line width and high brightness, colloidal quantum dot (CQD) lasers show promising applications in next-generation displays. However, CQD laser-based displays have yet to be demonstrated because of two challenges in integrating red, green, and blue (RGB) lasers: absorption from red CQDs deteriorates the optical gain of blue and green CQDs, and imbalanced white spectra lack blue lasing due to the high lasing threshold of blue CQDs. Herein, we introduce a facile surfactant-free self-assembly method to assemble RGB CQDs into high-quality whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) RGB lasers with close lasing thresholds among them. Moreover, these RGB lasers can lase nearly independently even when they are closely integrated, and they can construct an ultrawide color space whose color gamut is 105% of that of the BT.2020 standard. These combined strategies allow us to demonstrate the first full-color liquid crystal displays using CQD lasers as the backlight source.

Abstract
The excited-state intramolecular proton transfer chromophores were regarded as good materials for laser action generation due to their inherent four-level photocycle. The excitation-dependent properties of these compounds enable light amplification from two distinct forms: both enol and keto, making it possible to obtain dual fluorescence emission. Herein, we report that a third option is possible for the first time stimulated emission was realized with a deprotonated ESIPT molecule based on a novel rigidified 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)benzothiazole derivative, triggering the possibility to fabricate real-time tunable active material. Through the rational engineering of the ratio of each emissive species, a red-green-blue device was fabricated with the possibility of white light generation. The degenerated two-wave mixing setup was applied to construct a continuously tunable distributed feedback laser.

Abstract
The development of multi-wavelength lasing, particularly with the wavelength tuning in a wide spectral range, is challenging but highly desirable for integrated photonic devices due to its dynamic switching functionality, high spectral purity and contrast. Here, we propose a general strategy, that relies on the simultaneous design on the electronic states and the optical states, to demonstrate dynamically switchable single-mode lasing spanning beyond the record range (300 nm). This is achieved through integrating the reversely designed nanocrystals with two size-mismatched coupled microcavities. We show an experimental validation of a crosstalk-free violet-to-red single-mode behavior through collective control of asymmetric excitation and excitation wavelength. The single-mode action persists for a wide power range, and presents significant enhancement when compared with that in the microdisk laser. These findings enlighten the reverse design of luminescent materials. Given the remarkable doping flexibility, our results may create new opportunities in a variety of frontier applications.

Abstract
We report the synthesis of hyperbranched organic microwire (MW) networks comprising 1,4-bis(pentafluorostyryl)benzene (10Ft) and 9,10-bis(phenylethynyl)anthracene (BA) using a simple solution co-assembly route. Pure 10Ft or BA assemblies cannot produce such complex MW networks; in contrast with a binary cocrystal of 10Ft and BA with a 2:1 molar ratio ((2:1)10Ft:BA), which is formed via intermolecular arene-perfluoroarene (AP) interactions. A new generation of multiple MWs grow epitaxially on the previous generation of MWs to form MW arrays in which BA may also act as an intermediate product to facilitate the regeneration of (2:1)10Ft:BA. Highly aligned and well-connected MW networks enable superior optical waveguiding ability. Moreover, a red-emitting dopant, 5,12-bis(phenylethynyl)naphthacene (BN) was incorporated into (2:1)10Ft:BA host MWs, giving light-harvesting hierarchical MW networks via an energy-transfer (ET) process. The realization of the hyperbranched MWs provides us with deep insight into the rational creation of complex branched arrays from functional organic cocrystals.

Abstract
We report a new design strategy for an excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) fluorophore that can be used in acidic media. A photobasic pyridine-centered donor-acceptor-donor-type fluorophore is combined with a basic trialkylamine "strap". In the presence of an acid, protonation occurs predominantly at the amine moiety in the ground state. A single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the formation of a pre-organized intramolecular hydrogen-bonded structure between the resulting ammonium moiety and the pyridine ring. Upon excitation, the intramolecular charge-transfer transition increases the basicity of the pyridine moiety in the excited state, resulting in proton transfer from the amine to the pyridine moiety. Consequently, the fluorophore takes on a polymethine-dye character in the ESIPT state, which gives rise to significantly red-shifted emission with an increased fluorescence quantum yield.

Abstract
Elastic organic single crystals with light-emitting and multi-faceted bending properties are extremely rare. They have potential application in optical materials and have attracted the extensive attention of researchers. In this paper, we reported a structurally simple barbituric derivative DBDT, which was easily crystallized and gained long needle-like crystals (centimeter-scale) in DCM/CH3 OH (v/v=2/8). Upon applying or removing the mechanical force, both the (100) and (040) faces of the needle-like crystal showed reversible bending behaviour, showing the nature of multi-faceted bending. The average hardness (H) and elastic modulus (E) were 0.28±0.01 GPa and 4.56±0.03 GPa for the (040) plane, respectively. Through the analysis of the single crystal data, it could be seen that the van der waals (C-H⋅⋅⋅π and C-H⋅⋅⋅C), H-bond (C-H⋅⋅⋅O) and π⋅⋅⋅π interactions between molecules were responsible for the generation of the crystal elasticity. Interestingly, elastic crystals exhibited optical waveguide characteristics in straight or bent state. The optical loss coefficients measured at 627 nm were 0.7 dBmm-1 (straight state) and 0.9 dBmm-1 (bent state), while the optical loss coefficient (α) were 1.5 dBmm-1 (straight state) and 1.8 dBmm-1 (bent state) at 567 nm. Notably, the elastic organic molecular crystal based on barbituric derivative could be used as the candidate for flexible optical devices.

Abstract
MOF-based one-dimensional materials have received increasing attention in the nanophotonics field, but it is still difficult in the flexible shape evolution of MOF micro/nanocrystals for desired optical functionalities due to the susceptible solvothermal growth process. Herein, we report on the well-controlled shape evolution of pure-MOF microcrystals with optical waveguide and lasing performances based on a bottom-up and top-down synergistic method. The MOF microcrystals from solvothermal synthesis (bottom-up) enable the evolution from microrods via microtubes to nanowires through a chelating agent-assisted etching process (top-down). The three types of MOF 1D-microstructures with high crystallinity and smooth surfaces all exhibit efficient optical waveguide performance. Furthermore, MOF nanowire with lowest propagation loss served as low-threshold pure-MOF nanolasers with Fabry-Pérot resonance. These results advance the fundamental understanding on the controlled MOF evolution mechanism, and offer a valuable route for the development of pure-MOF-based photonic components with desired functionalities.

Abstract
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have recently emerged as appealing platforms to construct microlasers owing to their compelling characters combining the excellent stability of inorganic materials and processable characters of organic materials. However, MOF microstructures developed thus far are generally composed of multiple edge boundaries due to their crystalline nature, which consequently raises significant scattering losses that are detrimental to lasing performance. In this work, we propose a strategy to overcome the above drawback by designing spherically shaped MOFs microcavities. Such spherical MOF microstructures are constructed by amorphizing MOFs with a topological distortion network through introducing flexible building blocks into the growth environment. With an ultra-smooth surface and excellent circular boundaries, the acquired spherical microcavities possess a Q factor as high as ≈104 and can provide sufficient feedback for high-quality single-mode lasing oscillations. We hope that these results will pave an avenue for the construction of new types of flexible MOF-based photonic components.

Abstract
Organic compounds capable of excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) show fluorescence with a large Stokes shift and serve as solid-state emitters, luminescent dopants, and fluorescence-based sensing materials. Fluorescence of ESIPT molecules is usually increased in the solid state, but is weak in solvents due to the accelerated non-radiative decays by rotational motions of a part of the molecular core in these environments. Here we report, using a representative ESIPT motif 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)benzothiazole (HBT), the extended-conjugation strategy of keeping sufficient fluorescence efficiency both in the solid state and in organic media. The introduction of an alkyl-terminated phenylene-ethynylene group into the HBT molecule dramatically enhances the fluorescence quantum yield from 0.01 to 0.20 in toluene and from 0.07 to 0.32 in a representative room-temperature nematic liquid crystal, 4-pentyl-4'-cyano biphenyl (5CB). The newly-synthesized CnP-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-HBT (n = 5 or 8) serves as a fluorescent dopant in 5CB and exhibits anisotropic fluorescence with the order parameter of 0.48, where the luminescence is controlled by the applied electric-field. The enhanced emission efficiency is rationalized by the larger height of energy barrier for the ESIPT process due to the introduction of phenylene-ethynylene groups.

Abstract
The design of molecular compounds that exhibit flexibility is an emerging area of research. Although a fair amount of success has been achieved in the design of plastic or elastic crystals, realizing multidimensional plastic and elastic bending remains challenging. We report herein a naphthalidenimine-boron complex that showed size-dependent dual mechanical bending behavior whereas its parent Schiff base was brittle. Detailed crystallographic and spectroscopic analysis revealed the importance of boron in imparting the interesting mechanical properties. Furthermore, the luminescence of the molecule was turned-on subsequent to boron complexation, thereby allowing it to be explored for multimode optical waveguide applications. Our in-depth study of the size-dependent plastic and elastic bending of the crystals thus provides important insights in molecular engineering and could act as a platform for the development of future smart flexible materials for optoelectronic applications.

Abstract
Miniaturized lasers with high spectral purity and wide wavelength tunability are crucial for various photonic applications. Here we propose a strategy to realize broadband-tunable single-mode lasing based on a photoisomerization-activated intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) process in coupled polymer microdisk cavities. The photoisomerizable molecules doped in the polymer microdisks can be quantitatively transformed into a kind of laser dye with strong ICT character by photoexcitation. The gain region was tailored over a wide range through the self-modulation of the optically activated ICT isomers. Meanwhile, the resonant modes shifted with the photoisomerization because of a change in the effective refractive index of the polymer microdisk cavity. Based on the synergetic modulation of the optical gain and microcavity, we realized the broadband tuning of the single-mode laser. These results offer a promising route to fabricate broadband-tunable microlasers towards practical photonic integrations.

Abstract
Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) describes a photophysical phenomenon in which molecular aggregates exhibit stronger emission than the single molecules. Over the course of the last 20 years, AIE research has made great strides in material development, mechanistic study and high-tech applications. The achievements of AIE research demonstrate that molecular aggregates show many properties and functions that are absent in molecular species. In this review, we summarize the advances in the field of AIE and its related areas. We specifically focus on the new properties of materials attained by molecular aggregates beyond the microscopic molecular level. We hope this review will inspire more research into molecular ensembles at and beyond the meso level and lead to the significant progress in material and biological science.

The Quest of Excited-State Intramolecular Proton Transfer via Eight-Membered Ring π-Conjugated Hydrogen Bonding System. Chem Asian J 2017; 12:3010-3015. Abstract
Searching for eight-membered ring π-conjugated hydrogen bonding (8-MR H-bonding) systems with excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) property is seminal and synthetically challenging. In this work, a series of π-conjugated molecules (8-HB-1, 8-HB-L1 and 8-HB-2) potentially possessing 8-MR H-bonding are strategically designed, synthesized and characterized. The configurations of these three potential molecules are checked by their X-ray structures, among which 8-HB-L1 (a structurally locked 8-HB-1 core chromophore) is proved to be an 8-MR H-bonding system, whereas 8-HB-1 and 8-HB-2 are too sterically hindered to form the 8-MR intramolecular H-bond. The ESIPT property of 8-HB-L1 is confirmed by the dual fluorescence consisting of normal and proton-transfer tautomer emissions. The insight into the ESIPT process of 8-HB-L1 is provided by femtosecond fluorescence upconversion measurements together with computational simulation. The results demonstrate for the first time a successful synthetic route to attain the 8-MR H-bonding molecule 8-HB-L1 with ESIPT property.
