Abstract
Herein, we report a straightforward synthesis of valuable α-hydroxycarboxylic acid molecules via an acceptorless dehydrogenative coupling of ethylene glycol and primary alcohols. A bench-stable manganese complex catalyzed the reaction, which is scalable, with the product being isolated with high yields and selectivities under mild conditions. The protocol is environmentally benign, producing water and hydrogen gas as the only byproducts. Methanol can also be used as a C1 source for producing the platform molecule lactic acid, with a high turnover of >104 . The methodology was also used to functionalize alcohols derived from natural products and fatty acids. Furthermore, it was applied for synthesizing α-amino acid, α-thiocarboxylic acid, and several drugs and bioactive molecules, including endogenous metabolites, Danshensu, Enalapril, Lisinopril, and Rosmarinic acid. Preliminary mechanistic studies were performed to shed light on the mechanism involved in the reaction.

Abstract
Herein, we report a manganese-catalyzed three-component coupling of secondary alcohols, primary alcohols and methanol for the synthesis of β,β-methylated/alkylated secondary alcohols. Using our method, a series of 1-arylethanol, benzyl alcohol derivatives, and methanol undergo sequential coupling efficiently to construct assembled alcohols with high chemoselectivity in moderate to good yields. Mechanistic studies suggest that the reaction proceeds via methylation of a benzylated secondary alcohol intermediate to generate the final product.

Abstract
Polyurethane (PU) is a thermoset plastic that is found in everyday objects, such as mattresses and shoes, but also in more sophisticated materials, including windmills and airplanes, and as insulation materials in refrigerators and buildings. Because of extensive inter-cross linkages in PU, current recycling methods are somewhat lacking. In this work, the effective catalytic hydrogenation of PU materials is carried out by applying a catalyst based on the earth-abundant metal manganese, to give amine and polyol fractions, which represent the original monomeric composition. In particular, Mn-Ph MACHO is found to catalytically deconstruct flexible foam, molded foams, insulation, and end-of-life materials at 1 wt.% catalyst loading by applying a reaction temperature of 180 °C, 50 bar of H2 , and 0.9 wt.% of KOH in isopropyl alcohol. The protocol is showcased in the catalytic deconstruction of 2 g of mattress foam using only 0.13 wt.% catalyst, resulting in 90 % weight recovery and a turnover number of 905.

Abstract
Homogeneous hydrogenation catalysts based on metal complexes provide a diverse and highly tunable tool for the fine chemical industry. To fully unleash their potential, fast and effective methods for the evaluation of catalytic properties are needed. In turn, this requires changes in the experimental approaches to test and evaluate the performance of the catalytic processes. Design of experiment combined with statistical analysis can enable time- and resource-efficient experimentation. In this work, we employ a set of different statistical models to obtain the detailed kinetic description of a highly active homogeneous Mn (I) ketone hydrogenation catalyst as a representative model system. The reaction kinetics were analyzed using a full second order polynomial regression model, two models with eliminated parameters and finally a model which implements "chemical logic". The coefficients obtained are compared with the corresponding high-quality kinetic parameters acquired using conventional kinetic experiments. We demonstrate that various kinetic effects can be well captured using different statistical models, providing important insights into the reaction kinetics and mechanism of a complex catalytic reaction.

Abstract
A Cp*Ir(III) complex (1) of a newly designed ligand L1 featuring a proton-responsive pyridyl(benzamide) appended on N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) has been synthesized. The molecular structure of 1 reveals a dearomatized form of the ligand. The protonation of 1 with HBF4 in tetrahydrofuran gives the corresponding aromatized complex [Cp*Ir(L1 H)Cl]BF4 (2). Both compounds are characterized spectroscopically and by X-ray crystallography. The protonation of 1 with acid is examined by 1 H NMR and UV-vis spectra. The proton-responsive character of 1 is exploited for catalyzing α-alkylation of ketones and β-alkylation of secondary alcohols using primary alcohols as alkylating agents through hydrogen-borrowing methodology. Compound 1 is an effective catalyst for these reactions and exhibits a superior activity in comparison to a structurally similar iridium complex [Cp*Ir(L2 )Cl]PF6 (3) lacking a proton-responsive pendant amide moiety. The catalytic alkylation is characterized by a wide substrate scope, low catalyst and base loadings, and a short reaction time. The catalytic efficacy of 1 is also demonstrated for the syntheses of quinoline and lactone derivatives via acceptorless dehydrogenation, and selective alkylation of two steroids, pregnenolone and testosterone. Detailed mechanistic investigations and DFT calculations substantiate the role of the proton-responsive ligand in the hydrogen-borrowing process.

Abstract
A redox-active iminoquinone motif connected with π-delocalized pyrene core has been reported that can perform efficient two-electron oxidation of a class of substrates. The design of the molecule was inspired by the organic redox cofactor topaquinone (TPQ), which executes amine oxidation in the enzyme, copper amine oxidase. Easy oxidation of both primary and secondary alcohols happened in the presence of catalytic KOtBu, which could reduce the ligand backbone to its iminosemiquinonate form under photoinduced conditions. Moreover, this easy oxidation of alcohols under aerobic condition could be elegantly extended to multi-component, one-pot coupling for the synthesis of quinoline and pyrimidine. This organocatalytic approach is very mild (70 °C, 8 h) compared to a multitude of transition-metal catalysts that have been used to prepare these heterocycles. A detailed mechanistic study proves the intermediacy of the iminosemiquinonate-type radical and a critical hydrogen atom transfer step to be involved in the dehydrogenation reaction.

Abstract
The alkylation of amines by alcohols is a broadly applicable, sustainable, and selective method for the synthesis of alkyl amines, which are important bulk and fine chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and agrochemicals. We show that Cr complexes can catalyze this C-N bond formation reaction. We synthesized and isolated 35 examples of alkylated amines, including 13 previously undisclosed products, and the use of amino alcohols as alkylating agents was demonstrated. The catalyst tolerates numerous functional groups, including hydrogenation-sensitive examples. Compared to many other alcohol-based amine alkylation methods, where a stoichiometric amount of base is required, our Cr-based catalyst system gives yields higher than 90 % for various alkyl amines with a catalytic amount of base. Our study indicates that Cr complexes can catalyze borrowing hydrogen or hydrogen autotransfer reactions and could thus be an alternative to Fe, Co, and Mn, or noble metals in (de)hydrogenation catalysis.

Abstract
The reductive amination of ketones and aldehydes by ammonia is a highly attractive method for the synthesis of primary amines. The use of catalysts, especially reusable catalysts, based on earth-abundant metals is similarly appealing. Here, the iron-catalyzed synthesis of primary amines through reductive amination was realized. A broad scope and a very good tolerance of functional groups were observed. Ketones, including purely aliphatic ones, aryl-alkyl, dialkyl, and heterocyclic, as well as aldehydes could be converted smoothly into their corresponding primary amines. In addition, the amination of pharmaceuticals, bioactive compounds, and natural products was demonstrated. Many functional groups, such as hydroxy, methoxy, dioxol, sulfonyl, and boronate ester substituents, were tolerated. The catalyst is easy to handle, selective, and reusable and ammonia dissolved in water could be employed as the nitrogen source. The key is the use of a specific Fe complex for the catalyst synthesis and an N-doped SiC material as catalyst support.

Abstract
A sustainable and green route to access diverse functionalized ketones via dehydrogenative-dehydrative cross-coupling of primary and secondary alcohols is demonstrated. This borrowing hydrogen approach employing a pincer N-heterocyclic carbene Mn complex displays high activity and selectivity. A variety of primary and secondary alcohols are well tolerant and result in satisfactory isolated yields. Mechanistic studies suggest that this reaction proceeds via a direct outer-sphere mechanism and the dehydrogenation of the secondary alcohol substrates plays a vital role in the rate-limiting step.

Abstract
We report an earth-abundant-metal-catalyzed double and single methylation of alcohols. A manganese catalyst, which operates at low catalyst loadings and short reaction times, mediates these reactions efficiently. A broad scope of primary and secondary alcohols, including purely aliphatic examples, and 1,2-aminoalcohols can be methylated. Furthermore, alcohol methylation for the synthesis of pharmaceuticals has been demonstrated. The catalyst system tolerates many functional groups among them hydrogenation-sensitive examples and upscaling is easily achieved. Mechanistic investigations are indicative of a borrowing hydrogen or hydrogen autotransfer mechanism involving a bimetallic K-Mn catalyst. The catalyst accepts hydrogen as a proton and a hydride from alcohols efficiently and reacts with a chalcone via hydride transfer.

Abstract
A practical and sustainable synthesis of substituted quinolines was achieved through the annulation of 2-aminobenzyl alcohol with various secondary alcohols, ketones, aldehydes, or nitriles, under hydrogen-borrowing conditions. Under the catalysis of well-defined rhenium complexes bearing tridentate diphosphinoamino ligands, the reaction proceeded efficiently (31 examples were isolated with yields up to 96 %) affording a variety of quinoline derivatives.

Abstract
A new base metal catalyzed sustainable multicomponent synthesis of pyrroles from readily available substrates is reported. The developed protocol utilizes an air- and moisture-stable catalyst system and enables the replacement of themutagenic α-haloketones with readily abundant 1,2-diols. Moreover, the presented method is catalytic in base and the sole byproducts of this transformation are water and hydrogen gas. Experimental and computational mechanistic studies indicate that the reaction takes place through a combined acceptorless dehydrogenation hydrogen autotransfer methodology.

Abstract
A catalytic system based on complexes comprising abundant and cheap manganese together with readily available aminotriazole ligands is reported. The new Mn(I) complexes are catalytically competent in transfer hydrogenation of ketones with 2-propanol as hydrogen source. The reaction proceeds under mild conditions at 80 °C for 20 h with 3 % of catalyst loading using either KO t Bu or NaOH as base. Good to excellent yields were obtained for a wide substrate scope with broad functional group tolerance. The obtained results by varying the substitution pattern of the ligand are consistent with an out-sphere mechanism for the H-transfer.
