From Millimeter to Subnanometer: Vapor–Solid Deposition of Carbon Nitride Hierarchical Nanostructures Directed by Supramolecular Assembly

Photodriven Charge Accumulation and Carrier Dynamics in a Water-Soluble Carbon Nitride Photocatalyst

Charge accumulation in photoactive molecules and materials holds great promise in solar energy conversion as it allows for decoupling solar-driven charging from (dark) redox reactions. In this contribution, light-driven charge accumulation was investigated for a recently reported novel water-soluble carbon nitride [K,Na-poly(heptazine imide); K,Na-PHI] photocatalyst, which exhibits excellent activity and stability in highly selective photocatalytic oxidation of alcohols and concurrent reduction of dioxygen to H2 O2 under quasi-homogeneous conditions. An excellent charge storage ability of the K,Na-PHI material was demonstrated, showing an optimal density of accumulated electrons (32.2 μmol of electrons per gram) in the presence of 10 vol % MeOH as a sacrificial electron donor. The long-lived electrons accumulated under anaerobic conditions as K,Na-PHI.- radical ions were utilized in interfacial electron transfer to O2 or methyl viologen in a subsequent dark reaction. Ultrafast time-resolved spectroscopy was employed to reveal the kinetics of charge-carrier recombination and methanol oxidation. Geminate recombination of electrons and holes within approximately 100 ps was followed by trap-assisted recombination. The presence of methanol as a sacrificial electron donor accelerated the decay of the transient absorption signal when a static sample was used. This behavior was ascribed to the faster charge recombination in the presence of the radical anions generated after hole extraction. The work suggests that photodriven electron storage in the water-soluble carbon nitride is enabled by localized trap states, and highlights the importance of the effective electron donor for creating long-lived photo-generated carbon nitride radicals.

Emerging Concepts in Carbon Nitride Organic Photocatalysis

Carbon nitrides encompass a class of transition-metal-free materials possessing numerous advantages such as low cost (few Euros per gram), high chemical stability, broad tunability of redox potentials and optical bandgap, recyclability, and a high absorption coefficient (>10⁵  cm^-1 ), which make them highly attractive for application in photoredox catalysis. In this Review, we classify carbon nitrides based on their unique properties, structure, and redox potentials. We summarize recently emerging concepts in heterogeneous carbon nitride photocatalysis, with an emphasis on the synthesis of organic compounds: 1) Illumination-Driven Electron Accumulation in Semiconductors and Exploitation (IDEASE); 2) singlet-triplet intersystem crossing in carbon nitride excited states and related energy transfer; 3) architectures of flow photoreactors; and 4) dual metal/carbon nitride photocatalysis. The objective of this Review is to provide a detailed overview regarding innovative research in carbon nitride photocatalysis focusing on these topics.

Synthesis of g-C3 N4 Nanosheets by Using a Highly Condensed Lamellar Crystalline Melamine-Cyanuric Acid Supramolecular Complex for Enhanced Solar Hydrogen Generation

A highly condensed lamellar melamine-cyanuric acid supramolecular (MCS) complex was synthesized in an autoclave at high pressure as a precursor for preparing g-C₃ N₄ nanosheets. Given the distinctive properties of the prepared MCS complex, an efficient g-C₃ N₄ nanosheet photocatalyst can be obtained by heat treatment of this MCS complex under Ar followed by calcination in air at 400 °C. The resulting nanosheets with in-plane nanoholes showed an extremely high specific surface area (≈270 m²  g^-1 ) and significantly enhanced light absorption in the visible region. This phenomenon is observed for the first time in carbon nitride nanosheets. The enhanced light absorption results from the sizeable conjugated system of tri-striazine units in the carbon nitride framework, coupled with the structural defects arising from the presence of oxygen-containing groups induced during the synthesis. Consequently, the obtained carbon nitride nanosheets exhibited excellent performance for hydrogen generation under sunlight and especially under visible light. Its quantum efficiency (QE) of 20.9 % at 420 nm is one of the highest reported values for carbon nitride materials. A QE of 3.5 % could be observed even at 590 nm. The integrated QE of this material in the visible region (420-600 nm) is approximately 1 %. To the best of our knowledge this is the highest value compared to all other the carbon nitride nanosheet materials reported previously.

Bioinspired Mesoporous Chiral Nematic Graphitic Carbon Nitride Photocatalysts modulated by Polarized Light

Endowing materials with chirality and exploring the responses of the material under circularly polarized light (CPL) can enable further insight into the physical and chemical properties of the semiconductors to be gained, thus expanding on optoelectronic applications. Herein a bioinspired mesoporous chiral nematic graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃ N₄ ) for efficient hydrogen evolution with polarized light modulation based on chiral nematic cellulose nanocrystal films prepared through silica templating is described. The mesoporous nematic chiral g-C₃ N₄ exhibits an ultrahigh hydrogen evolution rate of 219.9 μmol h^-1 (for 20 mg catalyst), corresponding to a high enhancement factor of 55 when compared to the bulk g-C₃ N₄ under λ>420 nm irradiation. Furthermore, the chiral g-C₃ N₄ material exhibits unique photocatalytic activity modulated by CPL within the absorption region. This CPL-assisted photocatalytic regulation strategy holds great promise for a wide range of applications including optical devices, asymmetric photocatalysis, and chiral recognition/separation.
