Extremely Active and Robust Ir-Mn Dual-Atom Electrocatalyst for Oxygen Evolution Reaction by Oxygen-Oxygen Radical Coupling Mechanism

A novel Ir-Mn dual-atom electrocatalyst is synthesized by a facile ion-exchange method by incorporating Ir in SrMnO3, which yields an extremely high activity and stability for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The ion exchange process occurs in a self-limitation way, which favors the formation of Ir-Mn dual-atom in the IrMnO9 unit. The incorporation of Ir modulates the electronic structure of both Ir and Mn, thereby resulting in a shorter distance of the Ir-Mn dual-atom (2.41 Å) than the Mn-Mn dual-atom (2.49 Å). The modulated Ir-Mn dual-atom enables the same spin direction O (↑) of the adsorbed *O intermediates, thus facilitating the direct coupling of the two adsorbed *O intermediates to release O2 via the oxygen-oxygen radical coupling mechanism. Electrochemical tests reveal that the Ir-SrMnO3 exhibits a superior OER's activity with a low overpotential of 207 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and achieves a mass specific activity of 1100 A gIr -1 at 1.5 V. The proton-exchange-membrane water electrolyzer with the Ir-SrMnO3 catalyst exhibits a low electrolysis voltage of 1.63 V at 1.0 A cm-2 and a stable 2000-h operation with a decay of only 15 μV h-1 at 0.5 A cm-2.

Hydrodynamics-Controlled Single-Particle Electrocatalysis

Electrocatalysis is considered promising in renewable energy conversion and storage, yet numerous efforts rely on catalyst design to advance catalytic activity. Herein, a hydrodynamic single-particle electrocatalysis methodology is developed by integrating collision electrochemistry and microfluidics to improve the activity of an electrocatalysis system. As a proof-of-concept, hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is electrocatalyzed by individual palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs), with the development of microchannel-based ultramicroelectrodes. The controlled laminar flow enables the precise delivery of Pd NPs to the electrode-electrolyte interface one by one. Compared to the diffusion condition, hydrodynamic collision improves the number of active sites on a given electrode by 2 orders of magnitude. Furthermore, forced convection enables the enhancement of proton mass transport, thereby increasing the electrocatalytic activity of each single Pd NP. It turns out that the improvement in mass transport increases the reaction rate of HER at individual Pd NPs, thus a phase transition without requiring a high overpotential. This study provides new avenues for enhancing electrocatalytic activity by altering operating conditions, beyond material design limitations.

Impact electrochemistry for biosensing: advances and future directions

Impact electrochemistry allows for the investigation of the properties of single entities, ranging from nanoparticles (NPs) to soft bio-particles. It has introduced a novel dimension in the field of biological analysis, enhancing researchers' ability to comprehend biological heterogeneity and offering a new avenue for developing novel diagnostic devices for quantifying biological analytes. This review aims to summarize the recent advancements in impact electrochemistry-based biosensing over the past two to three years and provide insights into the future directions of this field.

Multiphase Chemistry under Nanoconfinement: An Electrochemical Perspective

Most relevant systems of interest to modern chemists rarely consist of a single phase. Real-world problems that require a rigorous understanding of chemical reactivity in multiple phases include the development of wearable and implantable biosensors, efficient fuel cells, single cell metabolic characterization techniques, and solar energy conversion devices. Within all of these systems, confinement effects at the nanoscale influence the chemical reaction coordinate. Thus, a fundamental understanding of the nanoconfinement effects of chemistry in multiphase environments is paramount. Electrochemistry is inherently a multiphase measurement tool reporting on a charged species traversing a phase boundary. Over the past 50 years, electrochemistry has witnessed astounding growth. Subpicoampere current measurements are routine, as is the study of single molecules and nanoparticles. This Perspective focuses on three nanoelectrochemical techniques to study multiphase chemistry under nanoconfinement: stochastic collision electrochemistry, single nanodroplet electrochemistry, and nanopore electrochemistry.

Monitoring Photoinduced Interparticle Chemical Communication In Situ

Monitoring interparticle chemical communication plays a critical role in the nanomaterial synthesis as this communication controls the final structure and stability of global nanoparticles (NPs). Yet most ensemble analytical techniques, which could only reveal average macroscopic information, are unable to elucidate NP-to-NP interactions. Herein, we employ stochastic collision electrochemistry to track the morphology transformation of Ag NPs in photochemical process at the single NP level. By further statistical analysis of time-resolved current transients, we quantitatively determine the dynamic chemical potential difference and interparticle communication between populations of large and small Ag NPs. The high sensitivity of stochastic collision electrochemistry enables the in situ investigation of chemical communication-dependent transformation kinetics of NPs in photochemical process, shedding light on designing nanomaterials.

Mass Transport and Electron Transfer at the Electrochemical-Confined Interface

Single entity measurements based on the stochastic collision electrochemistry provide a promising and versatile means to study single molecules, single particles, single droplets, etc. Conceptually, mass transport and electron transfer are the two main processes at the electrochemically confined interface that underpin the most transient electrochemical responses resulting from the stochastic and discrete behaviors of single entities at the microscopic scale. This perspective demonstrates how to achieve controllable stochastic collision electrochemistry by effectively altering the two processes. Future challenges and opportunities for stochastic collision electrochemistry are also highlighted.

Aggregation of Electrochemically Active Conjugated Organic Molecules and Its Impact on Aqueous Organic Redox Flow Batteries

Molecule aggregation in solution is acknowledged to be universal and can regulate the molecule's physiochemical properties, which however has been rarely investigated in electrochemistry. Herein, an electrochemical method is developed to quantitatively study the aggregation behavior of the target molecule methyl viologen dichloride. It is found that the oxidation state dicationic ions stay discrete, while the singly-reduced state monoradicals yield a concentration-dependent aggregation behavior. As a result, the molecule's energy level and its redox potential can be effectively regulated. This work does not only provide a method to investigate the molecular aggregation, but also demonstrates the feasibility to tune redox flow battery's performance by regulating the aggregation behavior.

Enhanced Electrochemiluminescence of A Macrocyclic Tetradentate Chelate Pt(II) Molecule via Its Collisional Interactions with the Electrode

A macrocyclic tetradentate chelate Pt(II) molecule (Pt1) served as an excellent luminophore in electrochemiluminescence (ECL) processes. The blue ECL of Pt1/S2O82- coreactant system in N,N'-dimethylformamide was found to be 46 times higher than that of the Ru(bpy)2+/S2O82- system or 30 times higher than that of the 9,10-diphenylanthracene/S2O82- system. The unprecedented high ECL quantum efficiencies were caused by the cyclic generation of monomer excited states through collisional interactions of Pt1 molecules with the electrode at an elevated frequency. The ECL is tunable from bright blue to pure white by simply changing the solvent from N,N'-dimethylformamide to dichloromethane. The white ECL of Pt(II) molecule was reported for the first time and the mechanism was proposed to be the simultaneous emissions from the monomer excited state (blue) and excimer (red).

Catalysis of hydrogen evolution on Pt(111) by absorbed hydrogen

The activity of Pt(111) electrodes for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in 0.5M H₂SO₄ solution is found to increase with continuous potential cycling in the HER potential region. In addition, the basic cyclic voltammograms obtained in 0.5M H₂SO₄ saturated with N₂ after HER show several characteristic changes: the current waves for hydrogen adsorption in the region of0.2 < E < 0.35 V and for sulfate adsorption at 0.35 < E < 0.5 V decrease and the current spike at 0.44 V for the phase transition of the sulfate adlayer gradually disappears. We suggest that these changes are caused by the absorption of a small amount of hydrogen in the subsurface layer and propose a mechanism by which this enhances hydrogen evolution.

Unravelling the last milliseconds of an individual graphene nanoplatelet before impact with a Pt surface by bipolar electrochemistry

Contactless interactions of micro/nano-particles near electrochemically or chemically active interfaces are ubiquitous in chemistry and biochemistry. Forces arising from a convective field, an electric field or chemical gradients act on different scales ranging from few microns down to few nanometers making their study difficult. Here, we correlated optical microscopy and electrochemical measurements to track at the millisecond timescale the dynamics of individual two-dimensional particles, graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs), when approaching an electrified Pt micro-interface. Our original approach takes advantage of the bipolar feedback current recorded when a conducting particle approaches an electrified surface without electrical contact and numerical simulations to access the velocity of individual GNPs. We evidenced a strong deceleration of GNPs from few tens of μm s-1 down to few μm s-1 within the last μm above the surface. This observation reveals the existence of strongly non-uniform forces between tens of and a thousand nanometers from the surface.

Tracking the Electrocatalytic Activity of a Single Palladium Nanoparticle for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

The nanoparticle-based electrocatalysts' performance is directly related to their working conditions. In general, a number of nanoparticles are uncontrollably fixed on a millimetre-sized electrode for electrochemical measurements. However, it is hard to reveal the maximum electrocatalytic activity owing to the aggregation and detachment of nanoparticles on the electrode surface. To solve this problem, here, we take the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalyzed by palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) as a model system to track the electrocatalytic activity of single Pd NPs by stochastic collision electrochemistry and ensemble electrochemistry, respectively. Compared with the nanoparticle fixed working condition, Pd NPs in the nanoparticle diffused working condition results in a 2-5 orders magnitude enhancement of electrocatalytic activity for HER at various bias potential. Stochastic collision electrochemistry with high temporal resolution gives further insights into the accurate study of NPs' electrocatalytic performance, enabling to dramatically enhance electrocatalytic efficiency.

Ionosomes: Observation of Ionic Bilayer Water Clusters

Emulsification of immiscible two-phase fluids, i.e., one condensed phase dispersed homogeneously as tiny droplets in an outer continuous medium, plays a key role in medicine, food, chemical separations, cosmetics, fabrication of micro- and nanoparticles and capsules, and dynamic optics. Herein, we demonstrate that water clusters/droplets can be formed in an organic phase via the spontaneous assembling of ionic bilayers. We term these clusters ionosomes, by analogy with liposomes where water clusters are encapsulated in a bilayer of lipid molecules. The driving force for the generation of ionosomes is a unique asymmetrical electrostatic attraction at the water/oil interface: small and more mobile hydrated ions reside in the inner aqueous side, which correlate tightly with the lipophilic bulky counterions in the adjacent outer oil side. These ionosomes can be formed through electrochemical (using an external power source) or chemical (by salt distribution) polarization at the liquid-liquid interface. The charge density of the cations, the organic solvent, and the synergistic effects between tetraethylammonium and lithium cations, all affecting the formation of ionosomes, were investigated. These results clearly prove that a new emulsification strategy is developed providing an alternative and generic platform, besides the canonical emulsification procedure with either ionic or nonionic surfactants as emulsifiers. Finally, we also demonstrate the detection of individual ionosomes via single-entity electrochemistry.

Chemical reactions on surfaces for applications in catalysis, gas sensing, adsorption-assisted desalination and Li-ion batteries: opportunities and challenges for surface science

The study of chemical processes on solid surfaces is a powerful tool to discover novel physicochemical concepts with direct implications for processes based on chemical reactions at surfaces, largely exploited by industry. Recent upgrades of experimental tools and computational capabilities, as well as the advent of two-dimensional materials, have opened new opportunities and challenges for surface science. In this Perspective, we highlight recent advances in application fields strictly connected to novel concepts emerging in surface science. Specifically, we show for selected case-study examples that surface oxidation can be unexpectedly beneficial for improving the efficiency in electrocatalysis (the hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction) and photocatalysis, as well as in gas sensing. Moreover, we discuss the adsorption-assisted mechanism in membrane distillation for seawater desalination, as well as the use of surface-science tools in the study of Li-ion batteries. In all these applications, surface-science methodologies (both experimental and theoretical) have unveiled new physicochemical processes, whose efficiency can be further tuned by controlling surface phenomena, thus paving the way for a new era for the investigation of surfaces and interfaces of nanomaterials. In addition, we discuss the role of surface scientists in contemporary condensed matter physics, taking as case-study examples specific controversial debates concerning unexpected phenomena emerging in nanosheets of layered materials, solved by adopting a surface-science approach.

Nanoimpacts at Active and Partially Active Electrodes: Insights and Limitations

While the electrochemical nanoimpact technique has recently emerged as a method of studying single entities, it is limited by requirement of a catalytically active particle impacting an inert electrode. We show that an active particle-active electrode can provide mechanistic insight into electrochemical reactions. When an individual Pt electrocatalyst adsorbs to the surface of a partially active electrode, further reduction of electrode-produced species can proceed on the nanocatalyst. Current transients obtained during hydrogen evolution allow simultaneous measurement of the Pt catalyst over different length scales, size dependency suggests H atom intercalation as a catalytic deactivation mechanism. Although results show that outer-sphere redox probes are unproductive for particle characterization, the breadth of inner-sphere electrochemical reactions makes this a promising method for understanding the properties of catalytic nanomaterials, one at a time.

Electrocatalysis as the Nexus for Sustainable Renewable Energy: The Gordian Knot of Activity, Stability, and Selectivity

The use of renewable energy by means of electrochemical techniques by converting H2 O, CO2 and N2 into chemical energy sources and raw materials, is the basis for securing a future sustainable "green" energy supply. Some weaknesses and inconsistencies in the practice of determining the electrocatalytic performance, which prevents a rational bottom-up catalyst design, are discussed. Large discrepancies in material properties as well as in electrocatalytic activity and stability become obvious when materials are tested under the conditions of their intended use as opposed to the usual laboratory conditions. They advocate for uniform activity/stability correlations under application-relevant conditions, and the need for a clear representation of electrocatalytic performance by contextualization in terms of functional investigation or progress towards application is emphasized.

Characterising porosity in platinum nanoparticles

Accurately determining the morphology and hence the true surface areas of catalytic nanoparticles remains challenging. For many chemically synthesised nanoparticle suspensions conventional BET surface area measurements are often not feasible due to the large quantities of material required. For platinum, a paradigmatic catalyst, this issue is further complicated by the propensity of this metal to form porous aggregate structures comprised of smaller (ca. 2-5 nm) crystallites as opposed to continuous solid structures. This dendritic/porous particulate morphology leads to a large but poorly defined 'active' surface which is difficult to measure accurately. Here we compare, single nanoparticle electrochemistry with three dimensional (3D) electron tomography and quantitative 2D high-angle annular dark-field (HAADF) scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) analysis to yield insights into the porosity and chemically accessible surface area of a 30 nm diameter commercial Pt nanoparticle catalyst. Good quantitative agreement is found between 2D and 3D STEM-based measurements of the particle morphology, density and size distribution. Both 3D STEM tomography and single nanoparticle electrochemical measurements allow quantification of the surface area but the electrocatalytic surface area is found to be 2.8× larger than is measured in STEM; indicating the importance of the atomic scale roughness and structure (<2 nm) in contributing to the total catalytic surface area of the nanomaterial.

Three-dimensional macroporous W2C inverse opal arrays for the efficient hydrogen evolution reaction

The development of a low-cost and durable non-precious metal-based electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is important to realize highly efficient overall water splitting. Here, we report the design and fabrication of a binder-free electrocatalyst of three-dimensional macroporous ditungsten carbide (W2C) inverse opal (W2C IO) arrays by a facile thermal carburization process with WO3 IO as a template. The as-fabricated W2C IO exhibits superior electrocatalytic performance in 0.5 M H2SO4 solution in terms of a low overpotential of 146 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm-2, a low Tafel slope of 78 mV dec-1 and excellent long-term stability. The superior performance can be attributed to the favorable electronic structure and hydrogen adsorption Gibbs free energy of W2C evidenced by theory calculations and the enhancement of the charge/mass transfer process by the 3D macroporous arrayed electrode design.

Unveiling the Intrinsic Catalytic Activities of Single-Gold-Nanoparticle-Based Enzyme Mimetics

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have been demonstrated to serve as effective nanomaterial-based enzyme mimetics (nanozymes) for a number of enzymatic reactions under mild conditions. The intrinsic glucose oxidase and peroxidase activities of single AuNPs and Ag-Au nanohybrids, respectively, were investigated by single NP collision electrochemical measurements. A significantly high turnover number of nanozymes was obtained from individual catalytic events compared with the results from the classical, ensemble-averaged measurements. The unusual enhancement of catalytic activity of single nanozymes is believed to originate from the high accessible surface area of monodispersed NPs and the high activities of carbon-supported NPs during single-particle collision at a carbon ultramicroelectrode. This work introduces a new method for the precise characterization of the intrinsic catalytic activities of nanozymes, giving further insights to the design of high-efficiency nanomaterial catalysts.
