Structures and Supramolecular Properties of Inclusion Complexes of Anthracene-Triptycene Nanocages with Fullerene Guests and Their Dynamic Motion as Molecular Gyroscopes

Three derivatives of macrocyclic cage compounds consisting of diarylanthracene and triptycene units were synthesized. These nanocages formed host-guest complexes with C₆₀ and other fullerene guests as confirmed by ¹ H NMR and fluorescence spectroscopy. The association constant of the mesityl and 2,4,6-tributoxyphenyl derivatives with C₆₀ was determined to be 2.2 × 10⁴  L mol^-1 , which was larger than that of the pentafluorophenyl derivative. Direct experimental evidence of the complexation was obtained by X-ray diffraction analysis: the guest C₆₀ molecule was included in the cavity via multipoint CH⋅⋅⋅π interactions. Dynamic disorders of the included C₆₀ molecule in variable-temperature X-ray analysis indicated uniaxial motion, such as gyroscopic motion. The unique dynamic behavior of the spherical C₆₀ rotor anchored by the cage stator via CH⋅⋅⋅π interactions in the crystal, as well as substituent effects on the association properties, are discussed with the aid of DFT calculations.

An Organic Molecular Nanobarrel that Hosts and Solubilizes C60

Organic cages have gained increasing attention in recent years as molecular hosts and porous materials. Among these, barrel-shaped cages or molecular nanobarrels are promising systems to encapsulate large hosts as they possess windows of the same size as their internal cavity. However, these systems have received little attention and remain practically unexplored despite their potential. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of a new trigonal prismatic organic nanobarrel with two large triangular windows with a diameter of 12.7 Å optimal for the encapsulation of C₆₀ . Remarkably, this organic nanobarrel shows a high affinity for C₆₀ in solvents in which C₆₀ is virtually insoluble, providing stable solutions of C₆₀ .

Diversity of Metal—Fullerene Framework Structures Regulated by Metal Salts

Taking into account the diversity of fullerene ligands and metal salts, metal–fullerene frameworks (MFFs) present a variety of structures. Currently, the structural control of MFFs mainly relies on the design and synthesis of fullerene ligands, while the influence of metal building units on the structures has been rarely studied. The present work represents a systematical investigation of fullerene-linked supramolecular architectures incorporating different metal salts. Treatment of a bidentate N,N-donors fullerene ligand (L1) with six metal salts ([Zn(NO₃)₂·6H₂O, Cd(NO₃)₂·4H₂O, Cu(NO₃)₂·3H₂O, Cu(OAc)₂·H₂O, FeCl₂·4H₂O and FeCl₃·6H₂O]) produced six one-dimensional MFFs, i.e., ZnL1(NO₃)₂(H₂O)₂ (1), CdL1(NO₃)₂ (2), Cu(L1)(H₂O)₂(NO₃)₂ (3), CuL1(OAc)(CH₃O) (4), FeL1Cl₂ (5) and FeL1Cl₂(FeCl₄) (6). Compounds 1–3, built with nitrates with different metal centers (M(NO₃)₂, M = Zn, Cd, Cu), present a 1D stair-like, 1D zigzag, and 1D linear chain structure, respectively. Compound 4, synthesized with another Cu(II) salt, Cu(OAc)₂, displays a dinuclear Cu-Cu connected 1D stair-like chain structure, rather than the single Cu linked 1D linear chain obtained from Cu(NO₃)₂. Compounds 5 and 6, assembled from iron chloride of different oxidation states (Fe(II)Cl₂ and Fe(III)Cl₃) reveal a 1D zigzag and a 1D stair-like chain structure, respectively. The results demonstrate the significant influences of metal salts on the structures of metal–fullerene frameworks.

Complexation of an Anthracene-Triptycene Nanocage Host with Fullerene Guests through CH⋅⋅⋅π Contacts

A bicyclic anthracene macrocycle containing two triptycene units at the bridgehead positions was synthesized by Ni-mediated coupling of the corresponding precursor as a cage-shaped aromatic hydrocarbon host. This cage host formed an inclusion complex with C₆₀ or C₇₀ guest in 1 : 1 ratio in solution. The association constants (K_a ) determined by the fluorescence titration method were 1.3×10⁴ and 3.3×10⁵  L mol ^-1 for the C₆₀ and C₇₀ complexes, respectively, at 298 K in toluene. DFT calculations revealed that the guest molecules were included in the middle of the cavity with several CH⋅⋅⋅π contacts. The strong affinity of the cage host for the fullerene guests and the high selectivity toward C₇₀ are discussed on the basis of spectroscopic and structural data.

Supramolecular Metallacycles and Their Binding of Fullerenes

The synthesis of a new triaminoguanidinium-based ligand with three tris-chelating [NNO]-binding pockets and C3 symmetry is described. The reaction of tris-(2-pyridinylene-N-oxide)triaminoguanidinium salts with zinc(II) formate leads to the formation of cyclic supramolecular coordination compounds which in solution bind fullerenes in their spherical cavities. The rapid encapsulation of C60 can be observed by NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction and is verified using computation.

Molecular balloon, Pd6L8 cages: recognition of alkyl sulfate surfactants

Significant structural contraction and expansion of flexible Pd₆L₈ cages by encapsulation of alkyl sulfate were demonstrated. The contact angles on the fine-ground microcrystal layers shift according to the chain length of the alkyl sulfate.
