Reductive Cyclization of Unactivated Alkyl Chlorides with Tethered Alkenes under Visible‐Light Photoredox Catalysis

Metal-Free Direct C3-H Alkylation and Arylation of Quinoxalin-2(1H)-Ones with Inert Alkyl and Aryl Chlorides

In the present manuscript, we reported the first visible-light-enabled direct C3-H alkylation/arylation of quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones with unactivated alkyl/aryl chlorides under metal-free conditions. A wide range of unactivated alkyl and aryl chlorides containing different functionalities are coupled with a variety of quinoxalin-2(1H)-one derivatives under mild reaction conditions to afford the C3-alkyl/aryl substituted quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones in moderate to good yields.

Selective Reductive Coupling of Vinyl Azaarenes and Alkynes via Photoredox Cobalt Dual Catalysis

A visible light-induced Co-catalyzed highly regio- and stereoselective reductive coupling of vinyl azaarenes and alkynes has been developed. Notably, Hünig's base together with simple ethanol has been successfully applied as the hydrogen sources instead of commonly used Hantzsch esters in this catalytic photoredox reaction. This approach has considerable advantages for the straightforward synthesis of stereodefined multiple substituted alkenes bearing an azaarene motif, such as excellent regioselectivity (>20 : 1 for >30 examples) and stereoselectivity (>20 : 1 E/Z), broad substrate scope and good functional group compatibility under mild reaction conditions, which has been utilized in the concise synthesis of natural product monomorine I. A reasonable catalytic reaction pathway involving protolysis of the cobaltacyclopentene intermediate has been proposed based on the mechanistic studies.

Photoredox Activation of Inert Alkyl Chlorides for the Reductive Cross-Coupling with Aromatic Alkenes

The inertness of chloroalkanes has precluded them as coupling partners for cross-coupling reactions. Herein we disclose a general strategy for the activation of inert alkyl chlorides through photoredox catalysis and their use as coupling partners with alkenes. The catalytic system is formed by [Ni(OTf)(Py₂ ^Ts tacn)](OTf) (1_Ni ), which is responsible for the Csp³ -Cl bond activation, and [Ir(^NMe2 bpy)(ppy)₂ ]PF_6, (PC_Ir ^NMe2 ), which is the photoredox catalyst. Combined experimental and theoretical studies show an in situ photogenerated Ni^I intermediate ([Ni(Py₂ ^Ts tacn)]⁺ ) which is catalytically competent for the Csp³ -Cl bond cleavage via a S_N 2 mechanism for primary alkyl chlorides, forming carbon-centered free radicals, which react with the olefin leading to the formation of the Csp³ -Csp³ bond. These results suggest inert alkyl chlorides can be electrophiles for developing new intermolecular strategies in which low-valent aminopyridine nickel complexes act as key catalytic species.

Combined Photoredox and Iron Catalysis for the Cyclotrimerization of Alkynes

Successful combinations of visible-light photocatalysis with metal catalysis have recently enabled the development of hitherto unknown chemical reactions. Dual mechanisms from merging metal-free photocatalysts and earth-abundant metal catalysts are still in their infancy. We report a photo-organo-iron-catalyzed cyclotrimerization of alkynes by photoredox activation of a ligand-free Fe catalyst. The reaction operates under very mild conditions (visible light, 20 °C, 1 h) with 1-2 mol % loading of the three catalysts (dye, amine, FeCl2 ).

Consecutive Charging of a Perylene Bisimide Dye by Multistep Low-Energy Solar-Light-Induced Electron Transfer Towards H2 Evolution

A photocatalytic system containing a perylene bisimide (PBI) dye as a photosensitizer anchored to titanium dioxide (TiO2 ) nanoparticles through carboxyl groups was constructed. Under solar-light irradiation in the presence of sacrificial triethanolamine (TEOA) in neutral and basic conditions (pH 8.5), a reaction cascade is initiated in which the PBI molecule first absorbs green light, giving the formation of a stable radical anion (PBI.- ), which in a second step absorbs near-infrared light, forming a stable PBI dianion (PBI2- ). Finally, the dianion absorbs red light and injects an electron into the TiO2 nanoparticle that is coated with platinum co-catalyst for hydrogen evolution. The hydrogen evolution rates (HERs) are as high as 1216 and 1022 μmol h-1  g-1 with simulated sunlight irradiation in neutral and basic conditions, respectively.
