Tunable Surface Area, Porosity, and Function in Conjugated Microporous Polymers

Ultra-stable hollow nanotube conjugated microporous polymer incorporating fluorenyl moieties for Co-capture of PM and CO2

Conjugated microporous polymers have a highly delocalized π-π conjugated porous skeleton connected by covalent bonds, which can combine their excellent stability with high adsorption, in order to be applied to the study of co-capture of harmful particulate matter (PM) and carbon dioxide (CO2) under high temperature and high humidity conditions. In this paper, fluorene-based coupled conjugated microporous polymers (D-CMPs) with functionalized hollow nanotubes and abundant microporous structures were proposed. Through mechanism exploration and molecular electrostatic potential (MESP) calculation, the capture efficiency, adsorption capacity and selectivity of PM and CO2 in the waste gas stream of carbon-based combustion were analyzed. The results indicate that D-CMPs, with their rigid carbon-based π-conjugated framework, exhibit excellent tolerance under prolonged high-humidity conditions, with a capture efficiency exceeding 99.87% for PM0.3 and exceeding 99.99% for PM2.5. Meanwhile, based on its chemical/thermal stability, it can realize the recycling of adsorption-regeneration. On this basis, the "slip effect" induced by the open three-dimensional hierarchical porous structure of D-CMPs significantly enhances airflow dispersion and improves gas throughput (with a minimal permeation resistance of only 15 Pa). At a pressure of 1 bar and a temperature of 273.15 K, D-CMP-2 exhibited a CO2 adsorption capacity of up to 2.69 mmol g-1. The fitting results of three isothermal adsorption models demonstrate that D-CMPs exhibit an outstanding equilibrium selectivity towards CO2. Therefore, prior to the widespread adoption of low-carbon and clean energy technologies, porous solid materials exhibiting excellent structural stability, equilibrium selectivity, environmental tolerance, and high adsorption capacity emerge as optimal candidates for the treatment of industrial waste gases.

Synthesis methods of microporous organic polymeric adsorbents: a review

MOPs can be synthesized in a large variety of ways, which affect their pores and surface area. Variation in synthesis and porosity has a significant effect on their adsorption properties.

Self-Reducible Conjugated Microporous Polyaniline for Long-Term Selective Cr(VI) Detoxication Driven by Tunable Pore Dimension

A simple methodology to controllably tune the pore size and Cr(VI) adsorption capacity was reported herein to synthesize a new series of conjugated microporous polyaniline (CMPA) networks. The well-ordered micropore was acquired through our very recent Bristol-Xi'an Jiaotong method, and the pore size was fine-tuned to increase with the increasing length of linkers, mimicking covalent organic frameworks and metal organic frameworks very much. A selective ultrahigh adsorption capacity of 520.8 mg/g was achieved by CMPA-1 in a very fast manner, with a systematically gradual decrease to 173.9 mg/g of CMPA-3 by enlarging the pore size of the networks, featuring tunable adsorption capacity through molecular-size-recognition mechanism. Additionally, our robust CMPA networks, which were constructed by Buchwald-Hartwig chemistry, showed the complete function of polyaniline and were capable of providing, besides large storage capacity for Cr(III), at least 10 reductant/desorption-free cycles for effective Cr(VI) reduction and detoxication through their novel self-reducible redox states. Outcomes showed that our CMPAs could be applied as new self-healing scavengers in the next generation for Cr(VI) storage and detoxication.

Molecular Expansion for Constructing Porous Organic Polymers with High Surface Areas and Well-Defined Nanopores

Construction of porous organic polymers (POPs) with high surface areas, well-defined nanopores, and excellent stability remains extremely challenging because of the unmanageable reaction process. Until now, only a few reported POPs have Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface areas (S_BET ) exceeding 3000 m²  g^-1 . Herein, we demonstrate a molecular expansion strategy to integrate high surface areas, large nanopore sizes, and outstanding stability into POPs. A series of hyper-crosslinked conjugated polymers (HCCPs) with exceptional porosity are synthesized through this strategy. Specially, HCCP-6 and HCCP-11 exhibit the highest surface areas (S_BET >3000 m²  g^-1 ) and excellent total pore volumes (up to 3.98 cm³  g^-1 ) among these HCCPs. They present decent total CH₄ storage capacities of 491 and 421 mg g^-1 at 80 bar and 298 K, respectively. Meanwhile, they are highly stable in harsh environments. The facile and general molecular expansion strategy would lead to improved synthetic routes of POPs for desired functions.
