Abstract
Polycrystalline [FeL2][BF4]2 (L=2,6-di(pyrazol-1-yl)isonicotinonitrile) exhibits an abrupt hysteretic spin transition near 240 K, with a shoulder on the warming branch whose appearance depends on the sample history. The freshly isolated material is a ca 60 : 40 mixture of triclinic (HS1) and tetragonal (HS2) high-spin polymorphs, which are structurally closely related. Both HS1 and HS2 undergo a high→low-spin transition on cooling at 230±10 K. HS1 transforms to a new triclinic low-spin phase with a doubled unit cell volume (LS3), while HS2 forms a monoclinic low-spin phase (LS4) with similar unit cell dimensions to HS2. Single crystals of LS3 and LS4 both convert to HS1 on rewarming. The low→high-spin transition for LS4 is ca 10 K higher in temperature than for LS3, explaining the asymmetric thermal hysteresis. Powder diffraction, calorimetry and magnetic data show that multiple cycling about the spin-transition leads to slow enrichment of the HS1 and LS3 phases at the expense of HS2 and LS4. That is consistent with the HS2/LS4 fraction of the polycrystalline sample undergoing rare, bifurcated HS2→(LS3+LS4) and LS4→(HS1+HS2) phase transitions. The rate of enrichment of HS1/LS3 differed between these experiments, implying it is sample and/or measurement-dependent. Three other salts of this iron(II) complex and the coordination polymer [Ag(μ-L)]BF4 are also briefly described.

Abstract
Four bis[2-{pyrazol-1-yl}-6-{pyrazol-3-yl}pyridine] ligands have been synthesized, with butane-1,4-diyl (L1 ), pyrid-2,6-diyl (L2 ), benzene-1,2-dimethylenyl (L3 ) and propane-1,3-diyl (L4 ) linkers between the tridentate metal-binding domains. L1 and L2 form [Fe2 (μ-L)2 ]X4 (X- =BF4 - or ClO4 - ) helicate complexes when treated with the appropriate iron(II) precursor. Solvate crystals of [Fe2 (μ-L1 )2 ][BF4 ]4 exhibit three different helicate conformations, which differ in the torsions of their butanediyl linker groups. The solvates exhibit gradual thermal spin-crossover, with examples of stepwise switching and partial spin-crossover to a low-temperature mixed-spin form. Salts of [Fe2 (μ-L2 )2 ]4+ are high-spin, which reflects their highly twisted iron coordination geometry. The composition and dynamics of assembly structures formed by iron(II) with L1 -L3 vary with the ligand linker group, by mass spectrometry and 1 H NMR spectroscopy. Gas-phase DFT calculations imply the butanediyl linker conformation in [Fe2 (μ-L1 )2 ]4+ influences its spin state properties, but show anomalies attributed to intramolecular electrostatic repulsion between the iron atoms.

Abstract
Self-assembly FeII complexes of phenazine (Phen), quinoxaline (Qxn), and 4,4'-trimethylenedipyridine (Tmp) with tetrahedral building blocks of [HgII (XCN)4 ]2- (X=S or Se) formed six new high-dimensional frameworks with the general formula of [Fe(L)m ][Hg(XCN)4 ]⋅solvents (L=Phen, m/X=2/S, 1; L=Qxn, m/X=2/S, 2; L=Qxn, m/X=1/S, 3; L=Qxn, m/X=1/Se, 3-Se; L=Tmp, m/X=1/S, 4; and L=Tmp, m/X=1/Se, 4-Se). 1, 3, and 3-Se show an intense sub-terahertz (sub-THz) absorbance of around 0.60 THz due to vibrations of the solvent molecules coordinated to the FeII ions and crystallization organic molecules. In addition, crystals of 1, 4, and 4-Se display low-frequency Raman scattering with exceptionally low values of 0.44, 0.51, and 0.53 THz, respectively. These results indicate that heavy metal FeII -HgII systems are promising platforms to construct sub-THz absorbers.

Abstract
The Co-based complex [Co(H2 B(pz)(pypz))2 ] (py=pyridine, pz=pyrazole) deposited on Ag(111) was investigated with scanning tunneling microscopy at ≈5 K. Due to a bis(tridentate) coordination sphere the molecules aggregate mainly into tetramers. Individual complexes in these tetramers undergo reversible transitions between two states with characteristic image contrasts when current is passed through them or one of their neighbors. Two molecules exhibit this bistability while the other two molecules are stable. The transition rates vary linearly with the tunneling current and exhibit an intriguing dependence on the bias voltage and its polarity. We interpret the states as being due to S=1 /2 and 3 /2 spin states of the Co2+ complex. The image contrast and the orders-of-magnitude variations of the switching yields can be tentatively understood from the calculated orbital structures of the two spin states, thus providing first insights into the mechanism of electron-induced excited spin-state trapping (ELIESST).

Abstract
Manipulation of multi-functions in molecular materials is promising for future switching and memory devices, although is currently difficult. Herein, we assembled the asymmetric {Fe2Co} unit into a cyanide-bridged mixed-valence chain {[(Tp)Fe(CN)3]2Co(BIT)}·2CH3OH (1) (Tp = hydrotris(pyrazolyl)borate and BIT = 3,4-bis-(1H-imidazol-1-yl)thiophen), which showed reversible multi-phase transitions accompanied by the photo-switchable single-chain magnet property and dielectric anomalies. Variable temperature X-ray structural studies revealed thermo-and photo-induced selective electron transfer (ET) between the Co and one of the Fe ions. Alternating-current magnetic susceptibility studies revealed that 1 displayed on and off of the single-chain magnet behavior by alternating 946-nm and 532-nm light irradiations. A substantial anomaly in dielectric constant was discovered during the electron transfer process, which is uncommon in similar ET complexes. These findings illustrate that 1 provided a new platform for multi-phase transitions and multi-switches adjusted by selective metal-to-metal ET.

Abstract
Spin-crossover between high-spin (HS) and low-spin (LS) states of selected transition metal ions in polynuclear and polymeric compounds is behind their use as multistep switchable materials in breakthrough electronic and spintronic devices. We report the first successful attempt to observe the dynamics of a rarely found broken-symmetry spin state in binuclear complexes, which mixes the states [HS-LS] and [LS-HS] on a millisecond timescale. The slow exchange between these two states, which was identified by paramagnetic NMR spectroscopy in solutions of two spin-crossover iron(II) binuclear helicates that are amenable to molecular design, opens a path to double quantum dot cellular automata for information storage and processing.

Abstract
Chiral magnetic materials are proposed for applications in second-order non-linear optics, magneto-chiral dichroism, among others. Recently, we have reported a set of tetra-nuclear Fe(II) grid complex conformers with general formula C/S-[Fe4 L4 ]8+ (L: 2,6-bis(6-(pyrazol-1-yl)pyridin-2-yl)-1,5-dihydrobenzo[1,2-d : 4,5-d']diimidazole). In the grid complexes, isomerism emerges from tautomerism and conformational isomerism of the ligand L, and the S-type grid complex is chiral, which originates from different non-centrosymmetric spatial organization of the trans type ligand around the Fe(II) center. However, the selective preparation of an enantiomerically pure grid complex in a controlled manner is difficult due to spontaneous self-assembly. To achieve the pre-synthesis programmable resolution of Fe(II) grid complexes, we designed and synthesized two novel intrinsically chiral ligands by appending chiral moieties to the parent ligand. The complexation of these chiral ligands with Fe(II) salt resulted in the formation of enantiomerically pure Fe(II) grid complexes, as unambiguously elucidated by CD and XRD studies. The enantiomeric complexes exhibited similar gradual and half-complete thermal and photo-induced SCO characteristics. The good agreement between the experimentally obtained and calculated CD spectra further supports the enantiomeric purity of the complexes and even the magnetic studies. The chiral resolution of Fe(II)- [2×2] grid complexes reported in this study, for the first time, might enable the fabrication of magneto-chiral molecular devices.

Abstract
The current craze for research around the spin crossover phenomenon can be justified to some extent by the mechanical properties due to the decrease of volume associated with the transition of the metal ion from the HS state to the LS state. As demonstrated here, the molecular complex [Fe(PM-pBrA)2 (NCS)2 ] exhibits, on the contrary, an increase of the unit-cell volume from HS to LS. This counter-intuitive and unprecedented behavior that concerns both the thermal and the photoexcited spin conversions is revealed by a combination of single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction complemented by magnetic measurements. Interestingly, this abnormal volume change appears concomitant with the wide rotation of a phenyl ring which induces a drastic modification, though reversible, of the structural packing within the crystal. In addition, the light-induced HS state obtained through the Light-Induced Excited Spin-State Trapping shows a remarkably high relaxation temperature, namely T(LIESST), of 109 K, one of the highest so far reported. The above set of quite unusual characteristics opens up new fields of possibilities within the development of spin crossover materials.

Abstract
Spin crossover (SCO) compounds are very attractive types of switchable materials due to their potential applications in memory devices, actuators or chemical sensors. Rational chemical tailoring of these switchable compounds is key for achieving new functionalities in synergy with the spin state change. However, the lack of precise structural information required to understand the chemical principles that control the SCO response with external stimuli may eventually hinder further development of spin switching-based applications. In this work, the functionalization with an amine group in the two-dimensional (2D) SCO compound {Fe(5-NH2Pym)2[MII(CN)4]} (1M, 5-NH2Pym = 5-aminopyrimidine, MII = Pt (1Pt), Pd (1Pd)) confers versatile host-guest chemistry and structural flexibility to the framework primarily driven by the generation of extensive H-bond interactions. Solvent free 1M species reversibly adsorb small protic molecules such as water, methanol or ethanol yielding the 1M·H2O, 1M·0.5MeOH or 1M·xEtOH (x = 0.25-0.40) solvated derivatives. Our results demonstrate that the reversible structural rearrangements accompanying these adsorption/desorption processes (1M ↔ 1M·guest) follow a gate-opening mechanism whose kinetics depend not only on the nature of the guest molecule and that of the host framework (1Pt or 1Pd) but also on their reciprocal interactions. In addition, a predictable and reversible guest-induced SCO modulation has been observed and accurately correlated with the associated crystallographic transformations monitored in detail by single crystal X-ray diffraction.

Abstract
The transfer of the inherent bistability of spin crossover compounds to surfaces has attracted considerable interest in recent years. The deposition of the complexes on surfaces allows investigating them individually and to further understand the microscopic mechanisms at play. Moreover, it offers the prospect of engineering switchable functional surfaces. We review recent progress in the field with a particular focus on the challenges and limits associated with the dominant experimental techniques used, namely near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). One of the main difficulties in NEXAFS-based experiments is to ascertain that the complexes are in direct contact with the surfaces. We show that molecular coverage determination based on the amplitude of the edge-jump of interest is challenging because the latter quantity depends on the substrate. Furthermore, NEXAFS averages the signals of a large number of molecules, which may be in different states. In particular, we highlight that the signal of fragmented molecules is difficult to distinguish from that of intact and functional ones. In contrast, STM allows investigating individual complexes, but the identification of the spin states is at best done indirectly. As quite some of the limits of the techniques are becoming apparent as the field is gaining maturity, their detailed descriptions will be useful for future investigations and for taking a fresh look at earlier reports.

Abstract
Integration of the ON-OFF cooperative spin crossover (SCO) properties of FeII coordination polymers as components of electronic and/or spintronic devices is currently an area of great interest for potential applications. This requires the selection and growth of thin films of the appropriate material onto selected substrates. In this context, two new series of cooperative SCO two-dimensional FeII coordination polymers of the Hofmann-type formulated {FeII(Pym)2[MII(CN)4]·xH2O}n and {FeII(Isoq)2[MII(CN)4]}n (Pym = pyrimidine, Isoq = isoquinoline; MII = Ni, Pd, Pt) have been synthesized, characterized, and the corresponding Pt derivatives selected for fabrication of thin films by liquid-phase epitaxy (LPE). At ambient pressure, variable-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetic, and calorimetric studies of the Pt and Pd microcrystalline materials of both series display strong cooperative thermal induced SCO properties. In contrast, this property is only observed for higher pressures in the Ni derivatives. The SCO behavior of the {FeII(L)2[PtII(CN)4]}n thin films (L = Pym, Isoq) were monitored by magnetization measurements in a SQUID magnetometer and compared with the homologous samples of the previously reported isostructural {FeII(Py)2[PtII(CN)4]}n (Py = pyridine). Application of the theory of regular solutions to the SCO of the three derivatives allowed us to evaluate the effect on the characteristic SCO temperatures and the hysteresis, as well as the associated thermodynamic parameters when moving from microcrystalline bulk solids to nanometric thin films.
