Hydrogen Bonding Between Ions of Like Charge in Ionic Liquids Characterized by NMR Deuteron Quadrupole Coupling Constants—Comparison with Salt Bridges and Molecular Systems

Improvement on the Radiation Stability of Multi-scale Supramolecular Assembly in Ionic Liquid-Based Extraction

The multi-scale supramolecular assembly (MSSA)-based extraction strategy with hydroxyl-functionalized ionic liquid (IL) is promising in the separation of metal ions from radioactive environments for which a comprehensive understanding toward the radiation stability of the MSSA system is necessary. Herein, we report on the analyses of the radiation stability of MSSA in extraction, especially the adopted ILs 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide (IL-1) and 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-2,3-dimethylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide (IL-2), by UV-vis, 1H NMR, and ESI-HRMS. It was found that the macroscopic assembly (MA) sphere could not be formed after γ irradiation on the extraction system with IL-1. On the contrary, the trisubstituted IL-2 instead of the disubstituted IL-1 remarkably improved the radiation stability of the MSSA system to guarantee the formation of the MA sphere. The high extraction efficiency could be kept, and the mechanism of such an improvement was revealed.

Mimicking the Energy Funnel of the Photosynthetic Unit Using a Dendrimer-Dye Supramolecular Assembly

Photosynthesis involves light-harvesting complexes where an array of antenna pigment channels the absorbed solar energy to the reaction centre of a photosystem. This work reports a supramolecular dendrimer-dye assembly that mimics the natural light-harvesting mechanism. A dendrimeric molecule based on two-fluorophores has been constructed with three coumarin units at the end of three long arms and a 7-diethylaminocoumarin unit at the interior. The molecule self-aggregates in water into spherical micelles, which can encapsulate a rose-bengal dye (RB). On excitation, peripheral coumarin units shuttled the energy to the loaded RB dye reaction center via a two-step cascade resonance energy transfer (RET). The energy absorbed in the periphery is funnelled efficiently, resulting in a strong emission from the dye that resembles an energy funnel. The energy transfer cascade has been studied with both steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. Molecular dynamics simulations of the self-assembled aggregates in water were also in agreement with the experimental observations.

Nuclear magnetic resonance characterisation of ionic liquids and organic ionic plastic crystals: common approaches and recent advances

Ionic liquids, and their solid-state equivalents organic ionic plastic crystals, show many useful and tailorable properties that make them interesting for a wide range of applications including as electrolytes for energy storage devices. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and related techniques offer a powerful and versatile toolkit for the characterisation of structure, interactions and dynamics in these materials. This article summarises both commonly used methods and some recent advances in this area, including solution- and solid-state methods, dynamic nuclear polarisation, imaging, diffusion and relaxation measurements, and example applications of some less commonly studied nuclei.

Freezing the Motion in Hydroxy-Functionalized Ionic Liquids-Temperature Dependent NMR Deuteron Quadrupole Coupling Constants for Two Types of Hydrogen Bonds Far below the Glass Transition

We measured the deuteron quadrupole coupling constants (DQCCs) for hydroxy-functionalized ionic liquids (ILs) with varying alkyl chain length over the temperature range between 60 and 200 K by means of solid-state NMR spectroscopy. For all temperatures, the ²H spectra show two DQCCs representing different types of hydrogen bonds. Higher values, ranging from 220 to 250 kHz, indicate weaker hydrogen bonds between cation and anion (c-a), and lower values varying from 165 to 210 kHz result from stronger hydrogen bonds between the OD groups of cations (c-c), in agreement with recent observations in infrared, neutron diffraction, and NMR studies. We observed different temperature dependencies for (c-a) and (c-c) hydrogen bonding. From the static pattern of the ²H spectra at the lowest temperatures, we derived the true DQCCs being up to 20 kHz larger than recently reported values measured at the glass transition temperature. We were able to freeze the librational motions of the hydrogen bonds in the ILs. The temperature dependence of the (c-a) and (c-c) cluster populations in the glassy state is opposite to that observed in the liquid state, partly anticipating the behavior of ILs tending to crystallize.
