Ligand‐Supported Facile Conversion of Uranyl(VI) into Uranium(IV) in Organic and Aqueous Media

A tetrahedral neptunium(V) complex

Neptunium is an actinide element sourced from anthropogenic production, and, unlike naturally abundant uranium, its coordination chemistry is not well developed in all accessible oxidation states. High-valent neptunium generally requires stabilization from at least one metal-ligand multiple bond, and departing from this structural motif poses a considerable challenge. Here we report a tetrahedral molecular neptunium(V) complex ([Np5+(NPC)4][B(ArF5)4], 1-Np) (NPC = [NPtBu(pyrr)2]-; tBu = C(CH3)3; pyrr = pyrrolidinyl (N(C2H4)2); B(ArF5)4 = tetrakis(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluourophenyl)borate). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction, solution-state spectroscopy and density functional theory studies of 1-Np and the product of its proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) reaction, 2-Np, demonstrate the unique bonding that stabilizes this reactive ion and establishes the thermochemical and kinetic parameters of PCET in a condensed-phase transuranic complex. The isolation of this four-coordinate, neptunium(V) complex reveals a fundamental reaction pathway in transuranic chemistry.

Pyridine Diphosphonate Ligand for Stabilization of Tetravalent Uranium and Neptunium in Aqueous Medium under Aerobic Conditions

Though uranium is usually present in its +6 oxidation state (as uranyl ion) in aqueous solutions, its conversion to oxidation states such as +4 or +5 is a challenging task. Electrochemical reduction and axial oxo activation are the preferred methods to get stable unusual oxidation states of uranium in an aqueous medium. In previous studies, dicarboxylic acid has been used to stabilize UO2+ in aqueous alkaline solutions. In the present work, a diphosphonate ligand was chosen due to its higher complexing ability compared to that of the carboxylate ligands. Neptunium complexation studies with 2,6-pyridinediphosphonic acid (PyPOH) indicated the formation of different species at different pH values and the complexation facilitates disproportionation of NpO2+ to Np4+ and NpO22+ at pH 2. Hexavalent actinides form insoluble complexes in aqueous media at pH = 2, as confirmed by UO22+ complexation studies. The in situ complexation-driven precipitation resulted in conversion to pure Np4+ in aqueous media as the Np4+-PyPOH complex. A strong complexing ability of the PyPOH ligand toward the Np4+ ion is also seen for the stabilization of the electrochemically generated U4+ in aqueous medium under aerobic conditions. The U4+-PyPOH complex was found to be stable for 3 months. Raman, UV-vis, fluorescence, and cyclic voltametric studies along with density functional theory (DFT) calculations were done to get structural insights into the PyPOH complexes of actinides in different oxidation states.

Using molten salts to probe outer-coordination sphere effects on lanthanide(III)/(II) electron-transfer reactions

Controlling structure and reactivity by manipulating the outer-coordination sphere around a given reagent represents a longstanding challenge in chemistry. Despite advances toward solving this problem, it remains difficult to experimentally interrogate and characterize outer-coordination sphere impact. This work describes an alternative approach that quantifies outer-coordination sphere effects. It shows how molten salt metal chlorides (MCl_n; M = K, Na, n = 1; M = Ca, n = 2) provided excellent platforms for experimentally characterizing the influence of the outer-coordination sphere cations (Mⁿ⁺) on redox reactions accessible to lanthanide ions; Ln³⁺ + e^1- → Ln²⁺ (Ln = Eu, Yb, Sm; e^1- = electron). As a representative example, X-ray absorption spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry results showed that Eu²⁺ instantaneously formed when Eu³⁺ dissolved in molten chloride salts that had strongly polarizing cations (like Ca²⁺ from CaCl₂) via the Eu³⁺ + Cl^1- → Eu²⁺ + ½Cl₂ reaction. Conversely, molten salts with less polarizing outer-sphere M¹⁺ cations (e.g., K¹⁺ in KCl) stabilized Ln³⁺. For instance, the Eu³⁺/Eu²⁺ reduction potential was >0.5 V more positive in CaCl₂ than in KCl. In accordance with first-principle molecular dynamics (FPMD) simulations, we postulated that hard Mⁿ⁺ cations (high polarization power) inductively removed electron density from Lnⁿ⁺ across Ln-Cl⋯Mⁿ⁺ networks and stabilized electron-rich and low oxidation state Ln²⁺ ions. Conversely, less polarizing Mⁿ⁺ cations (like K¹⁺) left electron density on Lnⁿ⁺ and stabilized electron-deficient and high-oxidation state Ln³⁺ ions.

Biological Reduction of a U(V)-Organic Ligand Complex

Metal-reducing microorganisms such as Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 reduce highly soluble species of hexavalent uranyl (U(VI)) to less mobile tetravalent uranium (U(IV)) compounds. The biologically mediated immobilization of U(VI) is being considered for the remediation of U contamination. However, the mechanistic underpinnings of biological U(VI) reduction remain unresolved. It has become clear that a first electron transfer occurs to form pentavalent (U(V)) intermediates, but it has not been definitively established whether a second one-electron transfer can occur or if disproportionation of U(V) is required. Here, we utilize the unusual properties of dpaea^2- ((dpaeaH₂═bis(pyridyl-6-methyl-2-carboxylate)-ethylamine)), a ligand forming a stable soluble aqueous complex with U(V), and investigate the reduction of U(VI)-dpaea and U(V)-dpaea by S. oneidensis MR-1. We establish U speciation through time by separating U(VI) from U(IV) by ion exchange chromatography and characterize the reaction end-products using U M₄-edge high resolution X-ray absorption near-edge structure (HR-XANES) spectroscopy. We document the reduction of solid phase U(VI)-dpaea to aqueous U(V)-dpaea but, most importantly, demonstrate that of U(V)-dpaea to U(IV). This work establishes the potential for biological reduction of U(V) bound to a stabilizing ligand. Thus, further work is warranted to investigate the possible persistence of U(V)-organic complexes followed by their bioreduction in environmental systems.
