Side‐On Bonded Beryllium Dinitrogen Complexes

Stabilisation and reactivity studies of donor-base ligand-supported gallium-phosphides with stronger binding energy: a theoretical approach

Gallium phosphide is a three-dimensional polymeric material of the hetero-diatomic GaP unit, which has a wurtzite type structure, and captivating application as a light emitting diode (LED). As a result, there is a constant search for suitable precursors to synthesise GaP-based materials. However, the corresponding monomeric species is exotic in nature due to the expected Ga[triple bond, length as m-dash]P multiple bond. Herein, we report on the theoretical studies of stability, chemical bonding, and reactivity of the monomeric gallium phosphides with two donor base ligands having tuneable binding energies. We have performed detailed investigations using density functional theory at three different levels (BP86/def2-TZVPP, B3LYP/def2-TZVPP, M06-2X/def2-TZVPP), QTAIM and EDA-NOCV (BP86-D3(BJ)/TZ2P, M06-2X/TZ2P) to analyse various ligand-stabilised GaP monomers, which revealed the synthetic viability of such species in the presence of stable singlet carbenes, e.g., cAAC, and NHC as ligands [cAAC = cyclic alkyl(amino) carbene, NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene] due to the larger bond dissociation energy compared to a phosphine ligand (PMe₃). The calculated bond dissociation energies between a pair of ligands and the monomeric GaP unit are found to be in the range of 87 to 137 kcal mol^-1, predicting their possible syntheses in the laboratory. Further, the reactivity of such species with metal carbonyls [Fe(CO)₄, and Ni(CO)₃] have been theoretically investigated.

C-O Bond Activation in Mononuclear Lanthanide Oxocarbonyl Complexes OLn(η2-CO) (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, and Nd)

Fundamental investigation of metal-CO interactions is of great importance for the development of high-performance catalysts to CO activation. Herein, a series of side-on bonded mononuclear lanthanide (Ln) oxocarbonyl complexes OLn(η²-CO) (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, and Nd) have been prepared and identified in solid argon matrices. The complexes exhibit uncommonly low C-O stretching bands near 1630 cm^-1, indicating remarkable C-O bond activation in these Ln analogues. The η²-CO ligand in OLn(η²-CO) can be claimed as an anion on the basis of the experimental observations and quantum chemistry investigations, although the CO anion is commonly considered to be unstable with electron auto-detachment. The CO activation in OLn(η²-CO) is attributed to the photoinduced intramolecular charge transfer from LnO to CO rather than the generally accepted metal → CO π back-donation, which conforms to the traditional Dewar-Chatt-Duncanson motif. Energy decomposition analysis combined with natural orbitals for chemical valence calculations demonstrates that the bonding between LnO and η²-CO arises from the combination of dominant ionic forces (>76%) and normal Lewis "acid-base" interactions. The fundamental findings provide guidelines for the catalyst design of CO activation.

Hitting the Bull's Eye: Stable HeBeOH+ Complex

It is now known that the heavier noble gases (Ng=Ar-Rn) show some varying degrees of reactivity with a gradual increase in reactivity along Ar-Rn. However, because of their very small size and very high ionization potential, helium and neon are the hardest targets to crack. Although few neon complexes are isolated at very low temperatures, helium needs very extreme situations like very high pressure. Here, we find that protonated BeO, BeOH⁺ can bind helium and neon spontaneously at room temperature. Therefore, extreme conditions like very low temperature and/or high pressure will not be required for their experimental isolation. The Ng-Be bond strength is very high for their heavier homologs and the bond strength shows a gradual increase from He to Rn. Moreover, the Ng-Be attractive energy is almost exclusively originated from the orbital interaction which is composed of one Ng(s/p_σ )→BeOH⁺ σ-donation and two weaker Ng(p_π )→BeOH⁺ π-donations, except for helium. Helium uses its low-lying vacant 2p orbitals to accept π-electron density from BeOH⁺ . Previously, such electron-accepting ability of helium was used to explain a somewhat stronger helium bond than neon for neutral complexes. However, the present results indicate that such π-back donations are too weak in nature to decide any energetic trend between helium and neon.

Spectroscopic Characterization of the Synergistic Mechanism of Ruthenium-Lithium Hydrides for Dinitrogen Cleavage

Elucidating the role of alkali/alkaline earth metal hydrides in dinitrogen activation remains an important and challenging goal for spectroscopic studies of bulk systems, because their spectral signatures are often masked by the collective effects. Herein, mass-selected photoelectron velocity-map imaging spectroscopic and quantum chemical calculation techniques are utilized to explore the promotion mechanism of LiH in the Ru-based catalysts toward N₂ activation. The RuHN₂^- anion is determined to be a N₂-tagged complex. In contrast, the RuHN₂(LiH)_n^- (n = 1 and 2) anions are characterized to have N≡N bond-cleaved ring structures. These observations indicate that the complexation of LiH to RuH^- significantly facilitates N≡N bond cleavage. Theoretical analyses show that the synergy between Ru and LiH efficiently lowers the energy barrier of N≡N bond cleavage. These findings clarify the pivotal roles played by the LiH species in the transition metal catalysts for N₂ activation and have important practical implications for the prospective design of high-performance catalysts via metal tuning strategies.

Highly Coordinated Heteronuclear Calcium-Iron Carbonyl Cation Complexes [CaFe(CO)n ]+ (n=5-12) with d-d Bonding

Heteronuclear calcium-iron carbonyl cation complexes in the form of [CaFe(CO)n ]+ (n=5-12) are produced in the gas phase. Infrared photodissociation spectroscopy in conjunction with quantum chemical calculations confirm that the n=10 complex is the coordination saturated ion where a Fe(CO)4 fragment is bonded with a Ca(CO)6 fragment through two side-on bridging carbonyl ligands. Bonding analysis indicates that it is best described by the bonding interactions between a [Ca(CO)6 ]2+ dication and an [Fe(CO)4 ]- anion forming a Fe→Ca d-d dative bond in the [(CO)6 Ca-Fe(CO)4 ]+ structure, which enriches the pool of experimentally observed complexes of calcium that mimic transition metal compounds. The molecule is the first example of a heteronuclear carbonyl complex featuring a d-d bond between calcium and a transition metal.

Intermediates of Carbon Monoxide Oxidation on Praseodymium Monoxide Molecules: Insights from Matrix-Isolation IR Spectroscopy and Quantum-Chemical Calculations

Identifying reaction intermediates in gas-phase investigations will provide understanding for the related catalysts in fundamental aspects including bonding interactions of the reaction species, oxidation states (OSs) of the anchored atoms, and reaction mechanisms. Herein, carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation by praseodymium monoxide (PrO) molecules has been investigated as a model reaction in solid argon using matrix-isolation IR spectroscopy and quantum-chemical calculations. Two reaction intermediates, OPr(η¹-CO) and OPr(η²-CO), have been trapped and characterized in argon matrixes. The intermediate OPr(η²-CO) shows an extremely low C-O stretching band at 1624.5 cm^-1. Quantum-chemistry studies indicate that the bonding in OPr(η¹-CO) is described as "donor-acceptor" interactions conforming to the Dewar-Chatt-Duncanson motif. However, the bonding in OPr(η²-CO) results evidently from a combination of dominant ionic forces and normal Lewis "acid-base" interactions. The electron density of the singly occupied bonding orbital is strongly polarized to the CO fragment in OPr(η²-CO). Electronic structure analysis suggests that the two captured species exhibit Pr(III) OSs. Besides, the pathways of CO oxidation have been discussed.

CO-Induced Dinitrogen Fixation and Cleavage Mediated by Boron

The boron atoms react with carbon monoxide and dinitrogen forming the end-on bonded NNBCO complex in solid neon or in nitrogen matrices. The NNBCO complex rearranges to the (η2 -N2 )BCO isomer with a more activated side-on bonded dinitrogen ligand upon visible light excitation. (η2 -N2 )BCO and its weakly CO-coordinated complexes further isomerize to the NBNCO and B(NCO)2 molecules with N-N bond being completely cleaved under UV light irradiation. The geometries, energies and vibrational spectra of the molecules are calculated with quantum chemical methods and the electronic structures are analyzed with charge- and energy-partitioning methods.

Beryllium Atom Mediated Dinitrogen Activation via Coupling with Carbon Monoxide

The reactions of laser-ablated beryllium atoms with dinitrogen and carbon monoxide mixtures form the end-on bonded NNBeCO and side-on bonded (η2 -N2 )BeCO isomers in solid argon, which are predicted by quantum chemical calculations to be almost isoenergetic. The end-on bonded complex has a triplet ground state while the side-on bonded isomer has a singlet electronic ground state. The complexes rearrange to the energetically lowest lying NBeNCO isomer upon visible light excitation, which is characterized to be an isocyanate complex of a nitrene derivative with a triplet electronic ground state. A bonding analysis using a charge- and energy decomposition procedure reveals that the electronic reference state of Be in the NNBeCO isomers has an 2s0 2p2 excited configuration and that the metal-ligand bonds can be described in terms of N2 →Be←CO σ donation and concomitant N2 ←Be→CO π backdonation. The results demonstrate that the activation of N2 with the N-N bond being completely cleaved can be achieved via coupling with carbon monoxide mediated by a main group atom.

Revisiting the Intriguing Electronic Features of the BeOBeC Carbyne and Some Isomers: A Quantum-Chemical Assessment

Extensive high-level quantum-chemical calculations reveal that the rod-shaped molecule BeOBeC, which was recently generated in matrix experiments, exists in two nearly isoenergetic states, the 5 Σ quintet (5 6) and the 3 Σ triplet (3 6). Their IR features are hardly distinguishable at finite temperature. The major difference concerns the mode of spin coupling between the terminal beryllium and carbon atoms. Further, the ground-state potential-energy surface of the [2Be,C,O] system at 4 K is presented and differences between the photochemical and thermal behaviors are highlighted. Finally, a previously not considered, so far unknown C2v -symmetric rhombus-like four-membered ring 3 [Be(O)(C)Be] (3 5) is predicted to represent the global minimum on the potential-energy surface.
