Heterogeneous Photocatalytic Strategies for C(sp3 )-H Activation

Activation of ubiquitous C(sp3 )-H bonds is extremely attractive but remains a great challenge. Heterogeneous photocatalysis offers a promising and sustainable approach for C(sp3 )-H activation and has been fast developing in the past decade. This Minireview focuses on mechanism and strategies for heterogeneous photocatalytic C(sp3 )-H activation. After introducing mechanistic insights, heterogeneous photocatalytic strategies for C(sp3 )-H activation including precise design of active sites, regulation of reactive radical species, improving charge separation and reactor innovations are discussed. In addition, recent advances in C(sp3 )-H activation of hydrocarbons, alcohols, ethers, amines and amides by heterogeneous photocatalysis are summarized. Lastly, challenges and opportunities are outlined to encourage more efforts for the development of this exciting and promising field.

Enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution through MoS2 quantum dots modification of bismuth-based perovskites

Efficient and cost-effective photocatalysts are pivotal for advancing large-scale solar hydrogen generation. Herein, we report a composite photocatalyst by incorporating MoS2 quantum dots (MoS2 QDs) as a cocatalyst into Cs3Bi2I9, resulting in a high enhancement in photocatalytic performance. Remarkably, the optimum MoS2 QDs/Cs3Bi2I9 composite achieves an impressive hydrogen evolution rate (6.09 mmol h-1 g-1) in an ethanol and HI/H3PO2 mixed solution. This rate is 8.8 times higher than pristine Cs3Bi2I9 (0.69 mmol h-1 g-1) and notably surpasses Pt/Cs3Bi2I9 (2.47 mmol h-1 g-1). Moreover, the composite displays exceptional stability during an 18-hour reaction, showcasing its potential for sustainable photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

Photosynthesis of Benzonitriles on BiOBr Nanosheets Promoted by Vacancy Associates

Photocatalytic organic functionalization reactions represent a green, cost-effective, and sustainable synthesis route for value-added chemicals. However, heterogeneous photocatalysis is inefficient in directly activating ammonia molecules for the production of high-value-added nitrogenous organic products when compared with oxygen activation in the formation of related oxygenated compounds. In this study, we report the heterogeneous photosynthesis of benzonitriles by the ammoxidation of benzyl alcohols (99 % conversion, 93 % selectivity) promoted using BiOBr nanosheets with surface vacancy associates. In contrast, the main reaction of catalysts with other types of vacancy sites is the oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde or benzoic acid. Experimental measurements and theoretical calculations have demonstrated a specificity of vacancy type with respect to product selectivity, which arises from the adsorption and activation of NH3 and O2 that is required to promote subsequent C-N coupling and oxidation to nitrile. This study provides a better understanding of the role of vacancies as catalytic sites in heterogeneous photocatalysis.

Utilizing the Undesirable Oxidation of Lead-Free Hybrid Halide Perovskite Nanosheets for Solar-Driven Photocatalytic C(sp3)─H Activation: Unraveling the Serendipity

Hybrid halide perovskites (HHPs), whose every branch generates intrusiveness, have been utilized in solar cells from a broader perspective. However, the inclusiveness of employing HHP as a photocatalyst is in its initial stage. This study mainly focuses on the unexpected utilization of, so far, undesirable material vacancy-ordered MA2SnBr6 quantum dots synthesized from MASnBr3 nanosheets. Here, the quantum confinement grounded a large blue shift in ultraviolet (UV) and photoluminescence (PL) spectra with a Stokes shift of 420 meV, where the band gap increase is observed as size decreases in MA2SnBr6. Remarkably, MA2SnBr6 exhibits air and moisture stability, better charge transfer, and high oxidation potential compared to MASnBr3. The first-principles-based atomistic computations reveal the strain relaxation in the Sn-Br framework that structurally stabilizes the MA2SnBr6 lattice. Furthermore, the direct band gap and strongly localized valence band edge give rise to a new potential photocatalyst MA2SnBr6 for efficient solar-driven C(sp3)─H activation of cyclohexane and toluene under ambient conditions.

CsPbBr3 Nanocrystals as Efficient Photocatalysts for Dehydrohalogenation: Toward Environmentally Friendly Trichloroethylene Synthesis

The demand for a benign alternative to energy-intensive industrial chemical transformations is critical. Lead halide perovskites have emerged as promising candidates due to their unique optoelectronic properties, including high absorption coefficients in the visible region, tunable band gaps, and long charge carrier-diffusion lengths. In this study, we present a model reaction to showcase the photocatalytic utility of perovskite nanocrystals (NCs). Specifically, we demonstrate the synthesis of trichloroethylene (TCEt) from 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane (TCE) using CsPbBr3 NCs under white light illumination. The band-edge positions of the NCs and the redox potential of TCE enable efficient electron transfer for C-Cl bond activation. Furthermore, while ensuring operational stability, CsPbBr3 NCs undergo light-controlled modification, leading to the formation of mixed-halide perovskite (CsPbBrxCl3-x) NCs during the reaction. This procedure yields a mixed-halide perovskite that maintains stability while containing the desired halide content. Additionally, the reaction produces HBr as a byproduct, serving as a self-cleaning technique to eliminate excess Br- ions from the solution. Ultimately, we achieve nearly 100% conversion of CsPbBr3 to pure CsPbCl3 NCs, with a full width at half-maximum of approximately 11.2 nm. Our clean and efficient approach to synthesizing TCEt using perovskite NCs provides interesting insights into violet light-emitting diode (LED) fabrication and color patterning. This study highlights the promising potential of perovskite materials for sustainable chemical transformations and optoelectronic applications.

Application of Metal Halide Perovskites as Photocatalysts in Organic Reactions

This review summarizes the current status of the application of metal halide perovskites (MHPs) as photocatalysts in organic syntheses/transformations. It is shown that the optimal and unique electronic properties of MHPs can be advantageously used in several reaction types providing pros with respect to traditional photocatalysts. While still being at infancy, such field of application of MHPs as effective photocatalysts will for sure become a central research topic in the forthcoming years, thanks also to their rich structural and chemical tunability, which may provide tailored materials for most of the envisaged organic reactions.
