On‐Demand Synthesis of H 2 O 2 by Water Oxidation for Sustainable Resource Production and Organic Pollutant Degradation

Catalyst-free contact-electro-catalytic H2O2 synthesis via simple combination of a poly(tetrafluoroethylene) stir bar and ultrasound

Herein, we present a catalyst-free contact-electro-catalytic method for synthesizing hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) by combining continuous agitation with a poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) stir bar and ultrasonication. A high H2O2 production rate of 256.6 μM h-1 is achieved under ambient conditions without adding particle catalysts and sacrificial agents, which is competitive with recent advancements in redox technology. Eco-friendliness, convenience and efficiency make this process a promising alternative method for H2O2 synthesis.

General Design Concept of High-Performance Single-Atom-Site Catalysts for H2O2 Electrosynthesis

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as a green oxidizing agent is widely used in various fields. Electrosynthesis of H2O2 has gradually become a hotspot due to its convenient and environment-friendly features. Single-atom-site catalysts (SASCs) with uniform active sites are the ideal catalysts for the in-depth study of the reaction mechanism and structure-performance relationship. In this review, the outstanding achievements of SASCs in the electrosynthesis of H2O2 through 2e- oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and 2e- water oxygen reaction (WOR) in recent years, are summarized. First, the elementary steps of the two pathways and the roles of key intermediates (*OOH and *OH) in the reactions are systematically discussed. Next, the influence of the size effect, electronic structure regulation, the support/interfacial effect, the optimization of coordination microenvironments, and the SASCs-derived catalysts applied in 2e- ORR are systematically analyzed. Besides, the developments of SASCs in 2e- WOR are also overviewed. Finally, the research progress of H2O2 electrosynthesis on SASCs is concluded, and an outlook on the rational design of SASCs is presented in conjunction with the design strategies and characterization techniques.

Bioinspired Tetranuclear Manganese Cubane Complex as an Efficient Molecular Electrocatalyst for Two-Electron Water Oxidation Towards Hydrogen Peroxide

Stable homogeneous two-electron water oxidation electrocatalysts are highly demanded to understand the precise mechanism and reaction intermediates of electrochemical H2O2 production. Here we report a tetranuclear manganese complex with a cubane structure which can electrocatalyze water oxidation to hydrogen peroxide under alkaline and neutral conditions. Such a complex demonstrates an optimal Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 87 %, which is amongst (if not) the highest FE(H2O2) of reported homogeneous and heterogeneous electrocatalysts. In addition, active species were identified and co-catalysts were excluded through ESI-MS characterization. Furthermore, we identified water binding sites and isolated one-electron oxidation intermediate by chemical oxidation of the catalyst in the presence of water substrates. It is evident that efficient proton-accepting electrolytes avoid rapid proton building-up at electrode and substantially improve reaction rate and selectivity. Accordingly, we propose a two-electron catalytic cycle model for water oxidation to hydrogen peroxide with the bioinspired molecular electrocatalyst. The present work is expected to provide an ideal platform to elucidate the two-electron WOR mechanism at the atomic level.

Photosynthesis of Hydrogen Peroxide Based on g-C3 N4 : The Road of a Cost-Effective Clean Fuel Production

Emerging artificial photosynthesis promises to offer a competitive means for solar energy conversion and further solves the energy crisis facing the world. Hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ), which is considered as a benign oxidant and a prospective liquid fuel, has received worldwide attention in the field of artificial photosynthesis on account of the source materials are just oxygen, water, and sunlight. Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3 N4 )-based photocatalysts for H2 O2 generation have attracted extensive research interest due to the intrinsic properties of g-C3 N4 . In this review, research processes for H2 O2 generation on the basis of g-C3 N4 , including development, fabrication, merits, and disadvantages, and the state-of-the-art methods to enhance the performance are summarized after a brief introduction and the mechanism analysis of an efficient catalytic system. Also, recent applications of g-C3 N4 -based photocatalysts for H2 O2 production are reviewed, and the significance of active sites and synthetic pathways are highlighted from the view of reducing barriers. Finally, this paper ends with some concluding remarks to reveal the issues and opportunities of g-C3 N4 -based photocatalysts for producing H2 O2 in a high yield.

Single atomic Ru in TiO2 boost efficient electrocatalytic water oxidation to hydrogen peroxide

Electrocatalytic two-electron water oxidation affords a promising approach for distributed production of H₂O₂ using electricity. However, it suffers from the trade-off between the selectivity and high production rate of H₂O₂ due to the lack of suitable electrocatalysts. In this study, single atoms of Ru were controllably introduced into titanium dioxide to produce H₂O₂ through an electrocatalytic two-electron water oxidation reaction. The adsorption energy values of OH intermediates could be tuned by introducing Ru single atoms, offering superior H₂O₂ production under high current density. Notably, a Faradaic efficiency of 62.8% with an H₂O₂ production rate of 24.2 μmol min^-1 cm^-2 (>400 ppm within 10 min) was achieved at a current density of 120 mA cm^-2. Consequently, herein, the possibility of high-yield H₂O₂ production under high current density was demonstrated and the importance of regulating intermediate adsorption during electrocatalysis was evidenced.

Enhanced Selectivity in the Electroproduction of H2 O2 via F/S Dual-Doping in Metal-Free Nanofibers

Electrocatalytic two-electron oxygen reduction (2e^- ORR) to hydrogen peroxide (H₂ O₂ ) is attracting broad interest in diversified areas including paper manufacturing, wastewater treatment, production of liquid fuels, and public sanitation. Current efforts focus on researching low-cost, large-scale, and sustainable electrocatalysts with high activity and selectivity. Here a large-scale H₂ O₂ electrocatalysts based on metal-free carbon fibers with a fluorine and sulfur dual-doping strategy is engineered. Optimized samples yield with a high onset potential of 0.814 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), an almost ideal 2e^- pathway selectivity of 99.1%, outperforming most of the recently reported carbon-based or metal-based electrocatalysts. First principle theoretical computations and experiments demonstrate that the intermolecular charge transfer coupled with electron spin redistribution from fluorine and sulfur dual-doping is the crucial factor contributing to the enhanced performances in 2e^- ORR. This work opens the door to the design and implementation of scalable, earth-abundant, highly selective electrocatalysts for H₂ O₂ production and other catalytic fields of industrial interest.

Pyropheophorbide-a/(001) TiO2 Nanocomposites with Enhanced Charge Separation and O2 Adsorption for High-Efficiency Visible-Light Degradation of Ametryn

It is highly desired to enhance charge separation and O₂ adsorption of the pyropheophorbide-a (Ppa) to promote visible-light activity and stability. Herein, Ppa modified 001-facet-exposed TiO₂ nanosheets (Ppa/001T) nanocomposites with different weight ratios were fabricated via the self-assembly approach by OH induced. Compared with the bare Ppa, the 8% amount optimized 8Ppa/001T sample displayed 41-fold enhanced activity for degradation of Ametryn (AME) under visible-light irradiation. The promoted photoactivities could be attributed to the accelerated charge carrier’s separation by coupling TiO₂ as thermodynamic platform for accepting the photoelectrons with high energy from Ppa and the promoted O₂ adsorption because of the residual fluoride on TiO₂. As for this, a distinctive two radicals (•O₂⁻ and •OH) involved pathway of AME degradation is carried out, which is different from the radical pathway dominated by •O₂⁻ for the bare Ppa. This work is of utmost importance since it gives us detailed information regarding the charge carrier’s separation and the impact of the radical pathway that will pave a new approach toward the design of high activity visible-light driven photocatalysts.

Carbonate-Induced Electrosynthesis of Hydrogen Peroxide via Two-Electron Water Oxidation

Electrochemical synthesis of hydrogen peroxide (H₂ O₂ ), via the two-electron water oxidation reaction (2e^- WOR), is an attractive method for the sustainable production of valuable chemicals in place of oxygen during water electrolysis. While the majority of 2e^- WOR studies have focussed on electrocatalyst design, little research has been carried out on the selection of the supporting electrolyte. In this work, we investigate the impact of potassium carbonate (K₂ CO₃ ) electrolytes, and their key properties, on H₂ O₂ production. We found that at electrolyte pH values (>9.5) where the carbonate anion (CO₃ ^2- ) was prevalent in the mixture, a 26.5 % increase in the Faraday efficiency (%FE) for H₂ O₂ production was achieved, compared to bicarbonate (HCO₃ ^- ) dominant solutions. Utilising boron-doped diamond (BDD) in highly concentrated K₂ CO₃ solutions, current densities of up to 511 mA cm^-2 (in 4 m) and %FEs of 91.5 % (in 5 m) could be attained. The results presented in this work highlight the influence of CO₃ ^2- on electrochemical H₂ O₂ generation via the 2e^- WOR and provide novel pathways to produce desirable commodities at the anode during electrochemical water splitting.

Ultrahigh Adsorption Capacity and Kinetics of Vertically Oriented Mesoporous Coatings for Removal of Organic Pollutants

Highly efficient removal of organic pollutants currently is a main worldwide concern in water treatment, and highly challenging. Here, vertically oriented mesoporous coatings (MCs) with tunable surface properties and pore sizes have been developed via the single-micelle directing assembly strategy, which show good adsorption performances toward a wide range of organic pollutants. The micelle size and structure can be precisely regulated by oil molecules based on their n-octanol/water partition coefficients (Log P) in the oil-water diphase assembly system, which are critical to the pore size and pore surface property of the MCs. The affinity and steric effects of the MCs can be on-demand adjusted, as a result, the MCs show a ultrahigh adsorption capacity (263 mg g^-1 ), surface occupancy ratio (≈41.92%), and adsorption rate (≈10.85 mg g^-1  min^-1 ) for microcystin-LR, which is among the best performances up to date. The MCs also show an excellent universality to remove organic pollutants with different properties. Moreover, overcoming the challenges proposed by particulate absorbents, the MCs are stable and can be easily regenerated and reused without secondary contamination. This work paves a new route to the synthesis of high-quality MCs for water purification.
