Sub‐10 nm Aggregation‐Induced Emission Quantum Dots Assembled by Microfluidics for Enhanced Tumor Targeting and Reduced Retention in the Liver

NIR-II Fluorescent Biodegradable Nanoprobes for Precise Acute Kidney/Liver Injury Imaging and Therapy

NIR-II fluorescent nanoprobes based on inorganic materials, including rare-earth-doped nanoparticles, single-walled carbon nanotubes, CdS quantum dots (QDs), gold nanoclusters, etc., have gained growing interest in bioimaging applications. However, these nanoprobes are usually not biodegradable and lack therapeutic functions. Herein, we developed novel NIR-II fluorescence (FL) imaging and therapeutic nanoprobes based on black phosphorus QDs (BPQDs), which exhibited excellent biodegradability and high tunability of size-dependent optical properties. By adjusting the size of nanoparticles, BPQDs can specifically accumulate in the kidney or liver. Importantly, a low dosage of BPQDs can effectively protect tissues from reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated damage in acute kidney and liver injury, which was real-time monitored by responsive NIR-II fluorescence imaging. Overall, we developed novel NIR-II emitting and therapeutic BPQDs with excellent biodegradability vivo, providing a promising candidate for NIR-II FL imaging and ROS scavenging.

A New Kind of RIV-type AIEgens and Their Applications for the Construction of Multifunctional Luminescent MOFs

In this work, a new kind of butterfly-like molecules of oxacalix[2]arene[2]pyrazine (OAP) are reported, which exhibit typical characteristics of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) via the restriction of intramolecular vibration (RIV) mechanism. Unlike any of the reported RIV-type AIE molecules, the synthetic procedures of which are complicated and associated high costs, OAP AIEgens can be synthesized in a facile manner by a one-step catalyst-free reaction using commercially available materials. Notably, OAP AIEgens are ideal ligands for constructing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) due to their built-in coordination sites of pyrazine groups. OAP-based MOFs exhibit multiple potential applications in reversible gas response, encrypted information storage, and construction of white light-emitting devices. This work enriches limited kinds of RIV-type AIEgens, offers additional selections of bridging ligands for constructing luminescent MOFs and provides a visualized prototype to understand the effect of RIV process on the luminescence property of MOFs.

Integrated Microfluidic Synthesis of Aptamer Functionalized Biozeolitic Imidazolate Framework (BioZIF-8) Targeting Lymph Node and Tumor

Targeted delivery of therapeutic molecules using nanomaterials is desired to elicit specific responses toward diseases. Such an integrated synthesis of functional material using a microfluidic approach is a great challenge. Functional metal organic frameworks (MOFs) with unique structural diversity possess a complicated synthesis procedure thereby requiring a modest, straightforward approach to synthesize size-controllable MOFs. Here, we develop an integrated microfluidic chip to synthesize the aptamer-modified biozeolitic imidazolate framework (BioZIF-8) to target the lymph node and tumor. The first stage of the microfluidic chip forms the ZIF-8 encapsulating biomolecules (bovine serum albumin, small interfering ribonucleic acid, and doxorubicin). The second stage modifies the surface of BioZIF-8 with the aptamer. Our approach reduces the overall synthesis time (∼3 mg/10 min against 15 h for the conventional two-step method) and encapsulates a higher number of biomolecules. The microfluidic approach realizes the rapid and fine-tuned synthesis of functional MOFs integrated into one-step.
