Dinuclear Triple‐Stranded Helicates Composed of Tetradentate Ligands with Aluminum(III) Chromophores: Optical Resolution and Multi‐color Circularly Polarized Luminescence Properties

Highly Fluorescent Bipyrrole-Based Tetra-BF2 Flag-Hinge Chromophores: Achieving Multicolor and Circularly Polarized Luminescence

This study reports the facile syntheses of tetra-boron difluoride (tetra-BF₂ ) complexes, flag-hinge-like molecules that exhibit intense green-to-orange luminescence in solution and yellow-to-red emission in the solid states. Single-crystal structure analysis and density functional theory calculations suggested a bent structure of this series of compounds. The complexes also exhibited excellent optical properties, with quantum yields reaching 100 % and a large Stokes shift. These properties were attributed to the altered bending angle of the molecule in the S₁ excited state. As the rotational motion was suppressed around the 2,2'-bipyrrole axis, atropisomers with axial chirality were formed, which are optically resolvable into (R) and (S)-enantiomers through a chiral column. The atropisomers thus function as circularly polarized luminescent (CPL) materials, in which the color (green, green-yellow, and yellow) can be varied by controlling the aggregation state. This rational design of multi-BF₂ complexes can potentially realize novel photofunctional materials.

A Highly Fluorescent Dinuclear Aluminium Complex with Near‐Unity Quantum Yield**

The high natural abundance of aluminium makes the respective fluorophores attractive for various optical applications, but photoluminescence quantum yields above 0.7 have yet not been reported for solutions of aluminium complexes. In this contribution, a dinuclear aluminium(III) complex featuring enhanced photoluminescence properties is described. Its facile one‐pot synthesis originates from a readily available precursor and trimethyl aluminium. In solution, the complex exhibits an unprecedented photoluminescence quantum yield near unity (Φ_absolute 1.0±0.1) and an excited‐state lifetime of 2.3 ns. In the solid state, J‐aggregation and aggregation‐caused quenching are noted, but still quantum yields of 0.6 are observed. Embedding the complex in electrospun non‐woven fabrics yields a highly fluorescent fleece possessing a quantum yield of 0.9±0.04.

Ruthenium Complexes Bearing Axially Chiral Bipyridyls: The Mismatched Diastereomer Showed Red Circularly Polarized Phosphorescence

Ruthenium^II complexes bearing three axially chiral bipyridyl ligands were synthesized as a new family of chiral complex dyes, and Δ-(S)- and Λ-(S)-diastereomers were obtained. The X-ray crystal structure analyses, spectroscopy, and DFT calculations suggested that all the bipyridyls maintained chirality in both the ground and excited states, and the Δ-(S)- and Λ-(S)-isomers are the matched (more relaxed) and mismatched (more constrained) pairs, respectively. The mismatched Λ-(S)-isomer exhibited red circularly polarized phosphorescence (CPP) both in solution and in the solid state. The solution state CPP is the most intense of ruthenium complexes, while the solid state CPP is the first example of them. It is supposed that, for the Λ-(S)-isomer, the six cumulative CH/π interactions suppress further distortion in the T₁ state.

Small Figure-Eight Luminophores: Double-Twisted Tethered Cyclic Binaphthyls Boost Circularly Polarized Luminescence

Double-twisted cyclic binaphthyls, in which two naphthalenes are tethered by -O(CH₂ )_n O- linkage (n=1-3), have been synthesized. X-ray analyses and DFT calculations revealed a tightly constrained stereogenic figure-eight geometry. Tethering of two naphthalenes by short linkage forces a small dihedral angle, and the cyclic binaphthyls with short tether (n=1, 2) exhibit remarkable boosting of the g_lum value (1.0-1.6×10^-2 ) in circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) and unusual g_lum /g_abs ratios (0.93-1.3). These experimental high |g_lum | values are in accord with the results of excited state TD-DFT calculations, which show transannular interactions and that consequent extensive delocalization occurs throughout the figure-eight π-core. As a result, the present figure-eight luminophore promote the elongation of the magnetic transition dipole moment that results in significant increases in g_lum values.
