One-Step Electrochemical Synthesis of AlO x -Passivated Twisted-Phosphorene Nanosheets for Potentially Stable Energy Storage Devices

Black phosphorus (BP), a promising 2D material for electronics, energy storage, catalysis, and sensing, has sparked a research boom. However, exfoliated thin-layered BP is unstable and can easily be degraded under environmental conditions, severely limiting its practical applications. In this context, a simple and cost-effective method has been proposed that involves electrochemically exfoliating BP and simultaneously electrochemically depositing aluminum oxide (AlO _x ) for passivation of the exfoliated BP. The ambient stability of the exfoliated BP is studied using a time-dependent atomic force microscope (AFM). The AlO _x capping layer significantly improves the environmental stability of BP compared to uncapped BP. The thermal stability of the resulting BP is evaluated using power-dependent Raman spectroscopy. The results show that the AlO _x -passivated BP has increased thermal stability, with only a slight shift in peak position toward higher Raman power intensity. These properties can make the material suitable for stable energy storage devices. Interestingly, the electrochemical exfoliation and passivation processes resulted in the BP with a twist angle (9.86°), which is expected to exhibit unique electronic properties similar to those of graphene with a twist angle.

Two-Dimensional Black Phosphorus: Preparation, Passivation and Lithium-Ion Battery Applications

As a new type of single element direct-bandgap semiconductor, black phosphorus (BP) shows many excellent characteristics due to its unique two-dimensional (2D) structure, which has great potential in the fields of optoelectronics, biology, sensing, information, and so on. In recent years, a series of physical and chemical methods have been developed to modify the surface of 2D BP to inhibit its contact with water and oxygen and improve the stability and physical properties of 2D BP. By doping and coating other materials, the stability of BP applied in the anode of a lithium-ion battery was improved. In this work, the preparation, passivation, and lithium-ion battery applications of two-dimensional black phosphorus are summarized and reviewed. Firstly, a variety of BP preparation methods are summarized. Secondly, starting from the environmental instability of BP, different passivation technologies are compared. Thirdly, the applications of BP in energy storage are introduced, especially the application of BP-based materials in lithium-ion batteries. Finally, based on preparation, surface functionalization, and lithium-ion battery of 2D BP, the current research status and possible future development direction are put forward.

Superatom Regiochemistry Dictates the Assembly and Surface Reactivity of a Two-Dimensional Material

The area of two-dimensional (2D) materials research would benefit greatly from the development of synthetically tunable van der Waals (vdW) materials. While the bottom-up synthesis of 2D frameworks from nanoscale building blocks holds great promise in this quest, there are many remaining hurdles, including the design of building blocks that reliably produce 2D lattices and the growth of macroscopic crystals that can be exfoliated to produce 2D materials. Here we report the regioselective synthesis of the cluster [trans-Co₆Se₈(CN)₄(CO)₂]^3-/4-, a "superatomic" building block designed to polymerize and assemble into a 2D cyanometalate lattice whose surfaces are chemically addressable. The resulting vdW material, [Co(py)₄]₂[trans-Co₆Se₈(CN)₄(CO)₂], grows as bulk single crystals that can be mechanically exfoliated to produce flakes as thin as bilayers, with photolabile CO ligands on the exfoliated surface. As a proof of concept, we show that these surface CO ligands can be replaced by 4-isocyanoazobenzene under blue light irradiation. This work demonstrates that the bottom-up assembly of layered vdW materials from superatoms is a promising and versatile approach to create 2D materials with tunable physical and chemical properties.
