Consecutive Nucleation and Confinement Modulation towards Li Plating in Seeded Capsules for Durable Li‐Metal Batteries

Flexible Aqueous Cr-Ion Hybrid Supercapacitors with Remarkable Electrochemical Properties in all Climates

The integration of hostless battery-like metal anodes for hybrid supercapacitors is a realistic design method for energy storage devices with promising future applications. With significant Cr element deposits on Earth, exceptionally high theoretical capacity (1546 mAh g-1), and accessible redox potential (-0.74 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode) of Cr metals, the design of Cr anodes has rightly come into our focus. This work presents a breakthrough design of a flexible Cr-ion hybrid supercapacitor (CHSC) based on a porous graphitized carbon fabric (PGCF) substrate prepared by K2FeO4 activation. In the CHSC device, PGCF acts as both a current collector and cathode material due to its high specific surface area and superior conductivity. The use of a highly concentrated LiCl-CrCl3 electrolyte with high Cr plating/stripping efficiency and excellent antifreeze properties enables the entire PGCF-based CHSC to achieve well-balanced performance in terms of energy density (up to 1.47 mWh cm-2), power characteristics (reaching 9.95 mW cm-2) and durability (95.4 % capacity retention after 30,000 cycles), while realizing it to work well under harsh conditions of -40 °C. This work introduces a new concept for low-temperature energy storage technology and confirms the potential application of Cr anodes in hybrid supercapacitors.

Superstable potassium metal batteries with a controllable internal electric field

Stable potassium metal batteries (PMBs) are promising candidates for electrical energy storage due to their ability to reversibly store electrical energy at a low cost. However, dendritic growth and large volume changes hinder their practical application. Here, referring to the morphology and structure of a virus, a bionic virus-like-carbon microsphere (BVC) was designed as the anode host for a PMB. A BVC with a three-dimensional structure can not only control the electric field, which can suppress dendrite formation, but can also provide a larger space to accommodate the volume change during the cycle progress. The designed potassium (K) metal anode exhibits excellent cycle life and stability (during 1800 h of repeated plating/stripping of K at a current density of 0.1 mA cm-2, K-BVC can realize a very stable K metal anode with low voltage hysteresis). Stable cyclability and improved rate capability can be realized in a full cell using Prussian blue over 400 cycles. This research provides a new idea for the development of stable K metal anodes and may pave the way for the practical application of next-generation metal batteries.

Nine-Electron Transfer of Binder Synergistic π-d Conjugated Coordination Polymers as High-Performance Lithium Storage Materials

To solve the problems such as the dissolution and the poor conductivity of organic small molecule electrode materials, we construct π-d conjugated coordination polymer Ni-DHBQ with multiple redox-active centers as lithium storage materials. It exhibits an ultra-high capacity of 9-electron transfers, while the π-d conjugation and the laminar structure inside the crystal ensure fast electron transport and lithium ion diffusion, resulting in excellent rate performance (505.6 mAh g^-1 at 1 A g^-1 after 300 cycles). The interaction of Ni-DHBQ with the binder CMC synergistically inhibits its dissolution and anchors the Ni atoms, thus exhibiting excellent cycling stability (650.7 mAh g^-1 at 0.1 A g^-1 after 100 cycles). This work provides insight into the mechanism of lithium storage in π-d conjugated coordination polymers and the synergistic effect of CMC, which will contribute to the molecular design and commercial application of organic electrode materials.

Reclaiming Inactive Lithium with a Triiodide/Iodide Redox Couple for Practical Lithium Metal Batteries

High-energy-density lithium (Li) metal batteries suffer from a short lifespan owing to apparently ceaseless inactive Li accumulation, which is accompanied by the consumption of electrolyte and active Li reservoir, seriously deteriorating the cyclability of batteries. Herein, a triiodide/iodide (I₃ ^- /I^- ) redox couple initiated by stannic iodide (SnI₄ ) is demonstrated to reclaim inactive Li. The reduction of I₃ ^- converts inactive Li into soluble LiI, which then diffuses to the cathode side. The oxidation of LiI by the delithiated cathode transforms cathode into the lithiation state and regenerates I₃ ^- , reclaiming Li ion from inactive Li. The regenerated I₃ ^- engages the further redox reactions. Furthermore, the formation of Sn mitigates the corrosion of I₃ ^- on active Li reservoir sacrificially. In working Li | LiNi_0.5 Co_0.2 Mn_0.3 O₂ batteries, the accumulated inactive Li is significantly reclaimed by the reversible I₃ ^- /I^- redox couple, improving the lifespan of batteries by twice. This work initiates a creative solution to reclaim inactive Li for prolonging the lifespan of practical Li metal batteries.

Advanced Electrolyte Design for High-Energy-Density Li-Metal Batteries under Practical Conditions

Given the limitations inherent in current intercalation-based Li-ion batteries, much research attention has focused on potential successors to Li-ion batteries such as lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries and lithium-oxygen (Li-O₂ ) batteries. In order to realize the potential of these batteries, the use of metallic lithium as the anode is essential. However, there are severe safety hazards associated with the growth of Li dendrites, and the formation of "dead Li" during cycles leads to the inevitable loss of active Li, which in the end is undoubtedly detrimental to the actual energy density of Li-metal batteries. For Li-metal batteries under practical conditions, a low negative/positive ratio (N/P ratio), a electrolyte/cathode ratio (E/C ratio) along with a high-voltage cathode is prerequisite. In this Review, we summarize the development of new electrolyte systems for Li-metal batteries under practical conditions, revisit the design criteria of advanced electrolytes for practical Li-metal batteries and provide perspectives on future development of electrolytes for practical Li-metal batteries.
