Heterogenization of molecular catalysts within porous solids: the case of Ni-catalyzed ethylene oligomerization from zeolites to metal-organic frameworks

The last decade has seen a tremendous expansion of the field of heterogenized molecular catalysis, especially with the growing interest in metal-organic frameworks and related porous hybrid solids. With successful achievements in the transfer from molecular homogeneous catalysis to heterogenized processes come the necessary discussions on methodologies used and a critical assessment on the advantages of heterogenizing molecular catalysis. Here we use the example of nickel-catalyzed ethylene oligomerization, a reaction of both fundamental and applied interest, to review heterogenization methodologies of well-defined molecular catalysts within porous solids while addressing the biases in the comparison between original molecular systems and heterogenized counterparts.

Group 10 Metal Allyl Amidinates: A Family of Readily Accessible and Stable Molecular Precursors to Generate Supported Nanoparticles

The synthesis of well-defined materials as model systems for catalysis and related fields is an important pillar in the understanding of catalytic processes at a molecular level. Various approaches employing organometallic precursors have been developed and established to make monodispersed supported nanoparticles, nanocrystals, and films. Using rational design principles, a new family of precursors based on group 10 metals suitable for the generation of small and monodispersed nanoparticles on metal oxides has been developed. Particle formation on SiO2 and Al2O3 supports is demonstrated, as well as the potential in the synthesis of bimetallic catalyst materials, exemplified by a PdGa/SiO2 system capable of hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol. In addition to surface organometallic chemistry (SOMC), it is envisioned that these precursors could also be employed in related applications, such as atomic layer deposition, due to their inherent volatility and relative thermal stability.

Nickel Catalyzed Olefin Oligomerization and Dimerization

Brought to life more than half a century ago and successfully applied for high-value petrochemical intermediates production, nickel-catalyzed olefin oligomerization is still a very dynamic topic, with many fundamental questions to address and industrial challenges to overcome. The unique and versatile reactivity of nickel enables the oligomerization of ethylene, propylene, and butenes into a wide range of oligomers that are highly sought-after in numerous fields to be controlled. Interestingly, both homogeneous and heterogeneous nickel catalysts have been scrutinized and employed to do this. This rare specificity encouraged us to interlink them in this review so as to open up opportunities for further catalyst development and innovation. An in-depth understanding of the reaction mechanisms in play is essential to being able to fine-tune the selectivity and achieve efficiency in the rational design of novel catalytic systems. This review thus provides a complete overview of the subject, compiling the main fundamental/industrial milestones and remaining challenges facing homogeneous/heterogeneous approaches as well as emerging catalytic concepts, with a focus on the last 10 years.

Tris(butadiene) Metal Complexes of the First-Row Transition Metals versus Coupling of Butadiene to Eight- and Twelve-Carbon Hydrocarbon Chains

The role that zerovalent nickel plays in catalyzing the trimerization of butadiene to 1,5,9-cyclododecatriene conveys interest in the properties of the tris(butadiene)metal complexes (C₄H₆)₃M. In this connection the complexes (C₄H₆)₃M (M = Ti-Ni) of the first-row transition metals have been investigated by density functional theory. The intermediate C₁₂H₁₈Ni which has been isolated in the nickel-catalyzed trimerization of butadiene but is too unstable for X-ray crystallography is suggested here to have an open-chain hexahapto η^3,3-C₁₂H₁₈ ligand rather than the octahapto such ligand suggested by some investigators. The lowest energy (C₄H₆)₃M structures of the other first-row transition metals from vanadium to cobalt are found to have related structures with open-chain C₁₂H₁₈ ligands having hapticities ranging from four to eight with hexahapto structures being most common. The nickel and cobalt (C₁₂H₁₈)M derivatives favor low-spin singlet and doublet spin states, respectively, whereas the manganese derivative (C₁₂H₁₈)Mn favors the high-spin sextet state corresponding to the half-filled d⁵ shell of Mn(II). A (C₄H₆)₃Cr structure with three separate tetrahapto butadiene ligands analogous to the very stable (η⁴-C₄H₆)₃M (M = Mo, W) with the favored 18-electron metal configuration is found to be a very high energy structure relative to isomers containing an open-chain C₁₂H₁₈ ligand.

Structures of dimetallocenes M2(C5H5)2 (M = Zn, Cu, Ni, Co, Fe) and their perfluorinated derivatives

Density functional theory shows that the dizincocenes Zn₂(C₅X₅)₂ (X = H, F) have singlet coaxial structures with two (η⁵-C₅X₅)Zn units linked by a Zn–Zn single bond. However, the low-energy M₂(C₅H₅)₂ (M = Cu–Fe) structures have perpendicular configurations with bridging C₅H₅ ligands.

Zirconocene-assisted remote cleavage of C-C and C-O bonds: application to acyclic stereodefined metalated hydrocarbons

The molding of molecules through remote functionalisation has increasingly become popular as it provides original and flexible synthetic alternatives to classical retrosynthetic analysis. In this Perspective article, we summarise more than a decade of studies in the specific field of remote activation of inert C-C and C-O bonds using the unique abilities of organozirconocene species mainly from our own research group. By demonstrating that these reactions represent novel and powerful entries towards acyclic stereodefined reactive organometallic species, we aim to show the vast opportunities this concept-driven methodology discovery offers.

Ligand conformations and spin states in open metallocenes of the first row transition metals having U-shaped 2,4-dimethylpentadienyl ligands

The lowest energy (2,4-Me₂C₅H₅)₂M structures (M = Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe) have the metal sandwiched between two U-shaped pentahapto pentadienyl ligands. However, those for the later transition metals Co and Ni contain one and two trihapto ligands, respectively.

Cobalt-Catalysed Asymmetric Hydrovinylation of 1,3-Dienes

In the presence of bidentate 1,n-bis-diphenylphosphinoalkane-CoCl2 complexes {Cl2Co[P~P]} and Me3Al or methylaluminoxane, acyclic (E)-1,3-dienes react with ethylene (1 atmosphere) to give excellent yields of hydrovinylation products. The regioselectivity (1,4- or 1,2-addition) and the alkene configuration (E- or Z-) of the resulting product depend on the nature of the ligand and temperature at which the reaction is carried out. Cobalt(II)-complexes of 1,1-diphenylphosphinomethane and similar ligands with narrow bite angles give mostly 1,2-addition, retaining the E-geometry of the original diene. Complexes of most other ligands at low temperature (-40 °C) give almost exclusively a single branched product, (Z)-3-alkylhexa-1,4-diene, which arises from a 1,4-hydrovinylation reaction. A minor product is the linear adduct, a 5-alkyl-hexa-1,4-diene, also arising from a 1,4-addition of ethylene. As the temperature is increased, a higher proportion of the major 1,4-adduct appears as the (E)-isomer. The unexpectedly high selectivity seen in the Co-catalysed reaction as compared to the corresponding Ni-catalysed reaction can be rationalized by invoking the intermediacy of an η4-[(diene)[P~P]CoH]+-complex and its subsequent reactions. The enhanced reactivity of terminal E-1,3-dienes over the corresponding Z-dienes can also be explained on the basis of the ease of formation of this η4-complex in the former case. The lack of reactivity of the X2Co(dppb) (X = Cl, Br) complexes in the presence of Zn/ZnI2 makes the Me3Al-mediated reaction different from the previously reported hydroalkenylation of dienes. Electron-rich phospholanes, bis-oxazolines and N-heterocyclic carbenes appear to be poor ligands for the Co(II)-catalysed hydrovinylation of 1,3-dienes. An extensive survey of chiral ligands reveals that complexes of DIOP, BDDP and Josiphos ligands are quite effective for these reactions even at -45 °C and enantioselectivities in the range of 90-99 % ee can be realized for a variety of 1,3-dienes. Cobalt(II)-complex of an electron-deficient Josiphos ligand is especially active, requiring only <1 mol% catalyst to effect the reactions.

Triarylphosphine Ligands with Hemilabile Alkoxy Groups. Ligands for Nickel(II)-Catalyzed Olefin Dimerization Reactions. Hydrovinylation of Vi-nylarenes, 1,3-Dienes, and Cycloisomerization of 1,6-Dienes

Substitution of one of the phenyl groups of triphenylphosphine with a 2-benzyloxy-, 2-benzyloxymethyl- or 2-benzyloxyethyl-phenyl moiety results in a set of simple ligands, which exhibit strikingly different behaviour in various nickel(II)-catalyzed olefin dimerization reactions. Complexes of ligands with 2-benzyloxyphenyl-, 2-benzyloxymethylphenyl-diphenylphosphine (L5 and L6 respectively) are most active for hydrovinylation (HV) of vinylarenes, with the former leading to extensive isomerization of the primary 3-aryl-1-butenes into the conjugated 2-aryl-2-butenes even at -55 °C. However, 2-benzyloxymethyl-substituted ligand L6 is slightly less active, leading up to quantitative yields of the primary products of HV at ambient temperature with no trace of isomerization, thus providing the best option for a practical synthesis of these compounds. In sharp contrast, hydrovinylation of a variety of 1,3-dienes is best catalyzed by nickel(II)-complexes of 2-benzyloxyphenyldiphenylphosphine, L5. The other two ligands, 2-benzyloxymethyl-(L6) and 2-benzyloxyethyl-diphenylphosphine (L7) are much less effective in the HV of 1,3-dienes. Nickel(II)-catalyzed cycloisomerization of 1,6-dienes into methylenecyclopentanes, a reaction mechanistically related to the other hydrovinylation reactions, is also uniquely effected by nickel(II)-complexes of L5, but not of L6 or L7. In an attempt to prepare authentic samples of the methylencyclohexane products, nickel(II)-complexes of N-heterocyclic carbene-ligands were examined. In sharp contrast to the phosphines, which give the methylenecyclopentanes, methylenecyclohexanes are the major products in the (N-heterocyclic carbene)nickel(II)-mediated reactions.

Regioselective prenylation of bromocarbazoles by palladium(0)-catalysed cross coupling – synthesis of O-methylsiamenol, O-methylmicromeline and carquinostatin A

We describe the regioselective prenylation of 3-bromo-carbazole by Pd(0)-catalysed cross coupling with a prenylstannane or a prenylboronate. The procedure is applied to the synthesis of bioactive carbazole alkaloids.
