Abstract
Kinetic resolution of alpha-lipoic acid, a case of remote stereocenter discrimination, was accomplished using lipase from Aspergillus oryzae WZ007. Performance of this lipase was investigated for enantioselective esterification of (S)-alpha-lipoic acid, leaving the target product (R)-alpha-lipoic acid in unreacted form. The effects of chain length of alcohol, type of solvent, molar ratio of alcohol:acid, and reaction temperature were studied. The optimum reaction conditions were found to be esterification with n-octanol at 50 degrees C in heptane with an alcohol:acid molar ratio of 5:1. The conversion rate of alpha-lipoic acid was 75.2%, with an enantiomeric excess of 92.5% towards unreacted substrate in a reaction time of 48 h.

Abstract
This review deals with copper complexes of a variety of organic and bioorganic molecules that have been produced as gas-phase ions by electrospray and other ionization methods and studied experimentally by mass spectrometry and theoretically by ab initio and density functional theory computations. Ternary complexes of Cu((II)) allow one to modify the oxidation state and coordination sphere of the copper ion and thus induce novel fragmentations that involve redox and radical-based reactions. Structure elucidation, distinction, and quantitation of leucine and isoleucine isomers in peptides, distinction of enantiomers in chiral compounds, and sensitive detection of antibiotics are some of the highlights of mass spectrometry of ternary copper complexes. Binary copper complexes are mainly represented by Cu((I)) species in which the copper ion displays the properties of a weak Lewis acid.

Abstract
The structures, electron distributions and dissociation energies of gas-phase ternary complexes of Cu(II) with 2,2'-bipyridine and leucine, isoleucine and lysine were addressed by density functional theory using the hybrid B3LYP functional, effective core potentials and the 6-31 + G(d) and LANL2DZ basis sets. The calculations confirm the previously suggested structures, in which amino acid carboxylates coordinate to the Cu atom by the carboxylate and alpha-amino groups in square-planar complexes. The dissociation energies for consecutive eliminations of CO(2) and alkyl radicals from isomeric singly charged complexes of leucine and isoleucine correlate with the ion relative abundances observed in collisionally activated dissociation mass spectra. Doubly charged lysine complexes show extremely low dissociation energies that are consistent with the <1 eV center-of-mass collision energies that were used in previous CAD studies. The calculated charge and spin densities point to radical-induced dissociations of singly charged complexes with an open-electron shell. In contrast, the unpaired electron is virtually inert in doubly charged, open-shell complexes that undergo charge-induced, spin-remote dissociations in the amino acid residues.

Abstract
Due to their relevant biological functions and specific chemical reactivity 1,2-dithiolanes (five-membered cyclic disulfides) represent an emerging class of heterocyclic compounds. However, despite the extensive research centered on lipoic acid and its analogues, only very few data are at the present available on peptides containing this ring system. We report here synthesis, conformation and bioactivity of a fMLF-OMe analogue, namely For-Met-Adt-Phe-OMe (7), in which the residue of the 4-amino-1,2-dithiolane-4-carboxylic acid (Adt) (4) replaces the central L-leucine. The crystal conformation of the synthetic intermediate Boc-Adt-OMe (5) is also described and compared to that of lipoic acid (R-1,2-dithiolane-3-pentanoic acid) (3) and asparagusic acid (1,2-dithiolane-4-carboxylic acid) (2).

Abstract
Electrospray ionization of mixtures of isomeric and isobaric amino acids was investigated with the goal of distinguishing and quantifying the components. Isomeric amino acids leucine and isoleucine were readily distinguished and quantified in 90 : 10 to 10 : 90 binary mixtures using two-stage (MS(2)) and three-stage (MS(3)) tandem mass spectrometric dissociations of ternary Cu(2+)-2, 2'-bipyridyl (bpy) complexes, [Cu(AA - H)bpy](+). The complexes self-assembled in solution upon mixing the components and provided a convenient means of efficient derivatization that increased the efficiency of amino acid ionization by electrospray and shifted the mass of the analytes to a region which was free of solvent interferences. Low-energy dissociations of [Cu(AA - H)bpy](+) complexes in a quadrupole ion trap were achieved at >90% conversions and >80% trapping efficiencies for the MS(2) and MS(3) precursor and fragment ions. Isobaric amino acids glutamine and lysine were also distinguished through MS(2) and MS(3) of their ternary complexes with Cu(2+) and bpy. ESI of [Cu(Gln - H)bpy](+) was enhanced in the presence of [Cu(Lys - H)bpy](+), which resulted in non-linear response at low Lys concentrations.

Abstract
Electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectra of ternary complexes of Cu(2+) and 1,10-phenanthroline with the 20 essential amino acids (AA) were investigated quantitatively. Non-basic amino acids formed singly charged complexes of the [Cu(AA - H)phen](+) type. Lysine (Lys) and arginine (Arg) formed doubly charged complexes of the [Cu(HAA - H)phen](2+) type. Detection limits were determined for the complexes of phenylalanine (Phe), glutamic acid (Glu) and Arg, which were at low micromolar or submicromolar concentrations under routine conditions. Detection limits of low nanomolar concentrations are possible for amino acids with hydrophobic side-chains (Phe, Tyr, Trp, Leu, Ile) as determined for Phe. The efficiencies for the formation by ESI of gaseous [Cu(AA - H)phen](+) ions were determined and correlated with the acid-base properties of the amino acids, ternary complex stability constants and amino acid hydrophobicities expressed as the Bull-Breese indices (DeltaF). A weak correlation was found between DeltaF and the ESI efficiencies for the formation of gaseous [Cu(AA - H)phen](+) [Cu(HAA - H]phen](2+) and [AA + H](+) ions that showed that amino acids with hydrophobic side-chains were ionized more efficiently. In the ESI of binary and ternary amino acid mixtures, the formation of gas-phase Cu-phen complexes of amino acids with hydrophobic side-chains was enhanced in the presence of complexes of amino acids with polar or basic side-chains. An interesting enhancement of the ESI formation of [Cu(Glu - H)phen](+) was observed in mixtures. The effect is explained by ion-cluster formation at the droplet interface that results in enhanced desorption of the glutamic acid complex.

Abstract
We have undertaken a systematic study of the nature of quinolone metal complexes formed by electrospray ionization and laser desorption/ion-molecule reactions to evaluate the analytical utility of metal complexation as an alternative to conventional ionization via protonation. Metal ionization with laser-desorbed copper and nickel ions results in addition products of the form (L + Cu+) and (L + Ni+), respectively, where L is the quinolone, whereas addition-elimination products of the form (L + Co(+)-28) are observed when cobalt is used. The elimination of CO in order to form this unusual latter product seems to be favored by the formation of a cyclized structure that is stabilized by intramolecular hydrogen bonding. The CAD patterns of the Ni+ complexes prove to be the most structurally informative, more so than the fragmentation patterns of the protonated quinolones. Quinolone-metal complexes of the type [MII(L-H+)-(dipy)]+, where M is either Cu, Co, or Ni and dipy is 2,2'-dipyridine, are generated by electrospray ionization of a methanolic solution containing a quinolone antibiotic, a transition metal ion salt, and an auxiliary diimine ligand. Upon collisional activation, the ESI-generated complexes dissociate predominantly by loss of CO2, which is also the most common fragmentation pathway for the metal complexes formed through laser desorption/ion-molecule reactions. However, there are fewer structurally diagnostic fragment ions in the CAD spectra of the ESI complexes relative to those of the LD complexes.
