Abstract
A CdS/AuNPs/NiO Z-scheme heterojunction was prepared on a fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) electrode by hydrothermal synthesis of NiO on FTO, electrodeposition of AuNPs on NiO/FTO electrode and then cast-coating of CdS quantum dots. The CdS/AuNPs/NiO/FTO electrode gave a notably increased photocurrent versus NiO/FTO, CdS/FTO, AuNPs/NiO/FTO, CdS/AuNPs/FTO and CdS/NiO/FTO electrodes. The CdS/AuNPs/NiO/FTO electrode was further cast-coated with chitosan to immobilize d-mannose by Schiff base reaction, and concanavalin A (ConA) and then horseradish peroxidase (HRP) were captured on the electrode surface by lectin-sugar binding. 4-Chloro-1-naphthol (4-CN) was oxidized to form an insoluble precipitate catalyzed by HRP in the presence of H2O2, and the presence of precipitate on the photoelectrode inhibited the photocurrent in the presence of holes scavenger ascorbic acid. The relevant electrodes were characterized by electrochemistry, quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), UV-vis spectrophotometry, scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The QCM revealed that the collection efficiency (η) of the 4-CN-electrooxidation precipitate on the electrode can be as high as 91.8%. Under the optimal conditions, the decline of photocurrent responded linearly to the common logarithm of ConA concentration from 50 pM to 500 nM, with a limit of detection of 17 pM (S/N = 3). Satisfactory results were obtained in the detection of real soybean samples.

Abstract
A novel label-free photoelectrochemical biosensing method for highly sensitive and specific detection of DNA hybridization using a CdS quantum dot (QD)-dendrimer nanocomposite is presented. A molecular beacon (MB) was assembled on a gold-nanoparticle-modified indium tin oxide electrode surface. Hybridization to a complementary target DNA disrupts the stem-loop structure of the MB, which was afterward labeled with the QD-dendrimer nanocomposite. The modified indium tin oxide electrode showed a stable anodic photocurrent response at 300 mV (vs Ag/AgCl) to light excitation at 410 nm in the presence of 0.1 M ascorbic acid as an electron donor. The protocol developed integrates the specificity of an MB for molecular recognition and the advantages of gold nanoparticles for increasing the loading capacity of the MB on the electrode surface and accelerating the electron transfer. Moreover, the photocurrent was greatly enhanced because of the high loading of QDs by the dendrimer, which eliminated the surface defects of CdS QDs and prevented recombination of their photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Under the optimal conditions, a linear relationship between the increase of photocurrent and target DNA concentration was obtained in the range from 1 fM to 0.1 nM, with a detection limit of 0.5 fM. The sequence-specificity experiment showed that one or three mismatches of DNA bases could be discriminated. This photoelectrochemical method is a prospective technique for DNA hybridization detection because of its great advantages: label-free, high sensitivity and specificity, low cost, and easy fabrication. This could create a new platform for the application of CdS QD-dendrimer nanocomposites in photoelectrochemical bioanalysis. Graphical abstract.

Abstract
We report the site-specific coupling of single proteins to individual carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in solution and with single-molecule control. Using an orthogonal Click reaction, Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) was engineered to contain a genetically encoded azide group and then bound to CNT ends in different configurations: in close proximity or at longer distances from the GFP's functional center. Atomic force microscopy and fluorescence analysis in solution and on surfaces at the single-protein level confirmed the importance of bioengineering optimal protein attachment sites to achieve direct protein-nanotube communication and bridging.

Abstract
Manganese-doped ZnS quantum dots (QDs) stabilized by cysteamine hydrochloride were successfully synthesized. Their thorough physicochemical characteristics were acquired using UV-Vis absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The average particle size, derived from HR-TEM, was 3.1nm, which agrees with the hydrodynamic diameter acquired by DLS, that was equal to 3-4nm, depending on ionic strength. The quantum dots also exhibited a large positive zeta potential varying between 75 and 36mV for ionic strength of 10-4 and 10-2M, respectively (at pH 6.2) and an intense luminescent emission at 590nm. The quantum yield was equal to 31% and the optical band gap energy was equal to 4.26eV. The kinetics of QD monolayer formation on silica substrates (silica sensors and oxidized silicon wafers) under convection-controlled transport was quantitatively evaluated by the quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) and the streaming potential measurements. A high stability of the monolayer for ionic strength 10-4 and 10-2M was confirmed in these measurements. The experimental data were adequately reflected by the extended random sequential adsorption model (eRSA). Additionally, thorough electrokinetic characteristics of the QD monolayers and their stability for various ionic strengths and pH were acquired by streaming potential measurements carried out under in situ conditions. These results were quantitatively interpreted in terms of the three-dimensional (3D) electrokinetic model that furnished bulk zeta potential of particles for high ionic strengths that is impractical by other experimental techniques. It is concluded that these results can be used for designing of biosensors of controlled monolayer structure capable to bind various ligands via covalent as well as electrostatic interactions.

Abstract
A strategy is reported for the controlled assembly of organic-inorganic heterostructures consisting of individual single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) selectively coupled to single semiconductor quantum dots (QDs). The assembly in aqueous solution was controlled towards the formation of monofunctionalized SWCNT-QD structures. Photoluminescence studies in solution, and on surfaces at the single nanohybrid level, showed evidence of electronic coupling between the two nanostructures. The ability to covalently couple heterostructures with single particle control is crucial for the design of novel QD-based optoelectronic and light-energy conversion devices.

Abstract
A photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor with excellent sensitivity and detection toward copper (II) ions (Cu2+) was developed using a cadmium sulphide-reduced graphene oxide (CdS-rGO) nanocomposite on an indium tin oxide (ITO) surface, with triethanolamine (TEA) used as the sacrificial electron donor. The CdS nanoparticles were initially synthesized via the aerosol-assisted chemical vapor deposition (AACVD) method using cadmium acetate and thiourea as the precursors to Cd2+ and S2-, respectively. Graphene oxide (GO) was then dip-coated onto the CdS electrode and sintered under an argon gas flow (50 mL/min) for the reduction process. The nanostructured CdS was adhered securely to the ITO by a continuous network of rGO that also acted as an avenue to intensify the transfer of electrons from the conduction band of CdS. The photoelectrochemical results indicated that the ITO/CdS-rGO photoelectrode could facilitate broad UV-visible light absorption, which would lead to a higher and steady-state photocurrent response in the presence of TEA in 0.1 M KCl. The photocurrent decreased with an increase in the concentration of Cu2+ ions. The photoelectrode response for Cu2+ ion detection had a linear range of 0.5–120 μM, with a limit of detection (LoD) of 16 nM. The proposed PEC sensor displayed ultra-sensitivity and good selectivity toward Cu2+ ion detection.

Abstract
Two oxidation peaks at 0.99, 1.48 V versus Fc/Fc+appear in the cyclic voltammograms of a series of defect-site functionalized SWNTs in methylene chloride solution in the presence of ferrocenes. These two peaks are demonstrated to be the electrochemical responses to the independent oxidation of v1and v2valence bands ofp-doped semiconducting SWNTs.

Abstract
A sensitive photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensor for detection of organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) using the nanocomposite of CdSe@ZnS quantum dots (QDs) and graphene deposited on the ITO coated glass electrode as a photoactive electrode is presented. The integration of CdSe@ZnS/graphene nanocomposite with biomolecules acetylcholinesterase (AChE) as a biorecognition element yields a novel biosensing platform. Under visible light irradiation, the AChE-CdSe@ZnS/graphene nanocomposite can generate a stable photocurrent and the photocurrent is found to be inversely dependent on the concentration of OPs. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the photocurrents were proportional to the logarithm of paraoxon and dichlorvos within the concentration range of 10(-12)-10(-6) M. The detection limits (LOD) of the proposed biosensor for paraoxon and dichlorvos are as low as 10(-14) M and 10(-12) M. The photoelectrochemical biosensor shows good sensitivity, reproducibility, stability, and could be successfully applied to detection of OPs in real fruit samples.

Abstract
Porous multicomponent semiconductor materials show improved photocatalytic performance due to the large and accessible pore surface area and high charge separation efficiency. Here we report the synthesis of well-ordered porous polyoxometalate (POM)-Ag2S-CdS hybrid mesostructures featuring a controllable composition and high photocatalytic activity via a two-step hard-templating and topotactic ion-exchange chemical process. Ag2S compounds and polyoxometalate cluster anions with different reduction potentials, such as PW12O40(3-), SiW12O40(4-) and PMo12O40(3-), were employed as electron acceptors in these ternary heterojunction photocatalysts. Characterization by small-angle X-ray scattering, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and N2 physisorption measurements showed hexagonal arrays of POM-Ag2S-CdS hybrid nanorods with large internal BET surface areas and uniform mesopores. The Keggin structure of the incorporated POM clusters was also verified by elemental X-ray spectroscopy microanalysis, infrared and diffuse-reflectance ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. These new porous materials were implemented as visible-light-driven photocatalysts, displaying exceptional high activity in aerobic oxidation of various para-substituted benzyl alcohols to the corresponding carbonyl compounds. Our experiments show that the spatial separation of photogenerated electrons and holes at CdS through the potential gradient along the CdS-Ag2S-POM interfaces is responsible for the increased photocatalytic activity.

Abstract
A layered nanostructure of a lead sulfide (PbS) quantum dot (QD)/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT) hybrid was prepared by the electrostatic assembly after the phase transfer of PbS QDs from an organic to an aqueous phase. Well-crystallized PbS QDs with a narrow diameter (5.5 nm) was mono-dispersed on the sidewalls of MWNT by the electrostatic adsorption. Near-infrared absorption of PbS/MWNT nanostructures was improved and controlled by the packing density of PbS QDs. Efficient charge transfer between PbS and MWNT at the interface resulted in a remarkable quenching of photoluminescence up to 28.6% and a blue-shift of emission band by 300 nm. This feature was facilitated by band energy levels based on the intimate contact through the electrostatic interaction. Two-terminal devices using PbS/MWNT nanostructures showed an excellent on/off switching photocurrent and good stability during 20 cycles under light illumination due to electron transfer from PbS to MWNT. The photoswitch exhibited a high photo sensitivity up to 31.3% with the photocurrent of 18.3 μA under the light of 3.85 mW/cm(2), which outperformed many QD/carbon-based nanocomposites. Results indicate that the electrostatic layered assembly of QD/MWNT nanostructure is an excellent platform for the fabrication of high-performance optoelectronic devices.

Abstract
Our recent studies on metal-organic nanohybrids based on alkylated graphene oxide (GO), reduced alkylated graphene oxide (RGO) and InP/ZnS core/shell quantum dots (QDs) are presented. The GO alkylated by octadecylamine (ODA) and the QD bearing a dodecane thiol (DDT) ligand are soluble in toluene. The nanocomposite alkylated-GO-QD (GOQD) is readily formed from the solution mixture. Treatment of the GOQD composite with hydrazine affords a reduced-alkylated-GO-QD (RGOQD) composite. The structure, morphology, photophysical and electrical properties of GOQDs and RGOQDs are studied. The micro-FTIR and Raman studies demonstrate evidence of the QD interaction with GO and RGO through facile intercalation of the alkyl chains. The field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) images of the GOQD composite show heaps of large QD aggregates piled underneath the GO sheet. Upon reduction to RGOQDs, the QDs become evenly distributed on the graphene bed and the size of the clusters significantly decreases. This also facilitates closer proximity of the QDs to the graphene domains by altering the optoelectronic properties of the RGOQDs. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results confirm QDs being retained in the composites, though a small elemental composition change takes place. The XPS and the fluorescence spectra show the presence of an In(Zn)P alloy while the X-ray diffraction (XRD) results show characteristics of the tetragonal indium. The photoluminescence (PL) quenching of QDs in GOQD and RGOQD films determined by the time correlated single photon counting (TCSPC) experiment demonstrates almost complete fluorescence quenching in RGOQDs. The conductance studies demonstrate the differences between GOQDs and RGOQDs. Investigation on the metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (nMOSFET) characteristics shows the composite to exhibit p-type channel material properties. The RGOQD exhibits much superior electrical conductance as a channel material compared to the GOQD due to the close proximity of the QDs in the RGOQD to the graphene surface. The transfer characteristics, memory properties, and on/off ratios of the devices are determined. A mechanism has been proposed with reference to the Fermi energies of the composites estimated from the ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) studies.

Abstract
The sequence-specific detection of DNA hybridization has attracted considerable interest in numerous fields. Although traditional DNA biosensors have been widely explored due to their high sensitivity, it is still challenging to develop a low-cost, portable, disposable, fast, and easy-to-use DNA detection method for public use at home or in the field. To address these challenges, herein, we report a novel microfluidic photoelectrochemical (PEC) paper-based analytical platform, integrated with an internal chemiluminescent light source, a novel paper supercapacitor (PS) amplifier, and a terminal digital multi-meter (DMM) detector, for sensitive DNA detection using a graphene-modified porous Au-paper electrode as the working electrode to obtain enhanced PEC responses. The quantification mechanism of this strategy is based on the charging of this PS, which was constructed on a paper-based analytical platform through a simple "drawing and soaking" method, by the generated photocurrent. After a fixed period, the PS was automatically shorted under the control of a novel built-in fluidic delay-switch to output an instantaneously amplified current, which could be sensitively detected by the DMM. At optimal conditions, this paper-based analytical platform can detect DNA at concentrations at femtomolar level. This approach also shows excellent specificity toward single nucleotide mismatches.

Abstract
In the last three decades, zero-dimensional, one-dimensional, and two-dimensional carbon nanomaterials (i.e., fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, and graphene, respectively) have attracted significant attention from the scientific community due to their unique electronic, optical, thermal, mechanical, and chemical properties. While early work showed that these properties could enable high performance in selected applications, issues surrounding structural inhomogeneity and imprecise assembly have impeded robust and reliable implementation of carbon nanomaterials in widespread technologies. However, with recent advances in synthesis, sorting, and assembly techniques, carbon nanomaterials are experiencing renewed interest as the basis of numerous scalable technologies. Here, we present an extensive review of carbon nanomaterials in electronic, optoelectronic, photovoltaic, and sensing devices with a particular focus on the latest examples based on the highest purity samples. Specific attention is devoted to each class of carbon nanomaterial, thereby allowing comparative analysis of the suitability of fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, and graphene for each application area. In this manner, this article will provide guidance to future application developers and also articulate the remaining research challenges confronting this field.

Abstract
A vertically aligned carbon nanotube (VACNT) hexagonal network was fabricated by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition as an electrode scaffold to assemble CdS quantum dots (QDs). The quantum dot sensitized solar cell (QDSSC) based on a VACNT/CdS hexagonal network shows a short circuit current density of 4.7 mA/cm(2), which is almost twice of that based on screen-printed CNT/CdS thin film with the same thickness. The enhancement of the short circuit current could be attributed to the unique morphology of the VACNT hexagonal network, which provides direct and percolating pathways for the electrons to transfer, enhances the spectral transmission through the hexagonal microchannels to the photoactive QD sites, and also presents more surface area to assembled CdS QDs without consuming extra substrate space. The photovoltaic property of the VACNT/CdS hexagonal network indicates its potential application in the energy conversion devices.

Abstract
A novel ultrasensitive photoelectrochemical immunosensor was fabricated based on 3-mercaptopropionic acid stabilized CdS/reduced graphene oxide (MPA-CdS/RGO) nanocomposites for indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) detection. The MPA-CdS/RGO nanocomposites were synthesized by in situ solvothermal growth of triangulated pyramidal CdS nanoparticles on the RGO sheet. 3-Mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) was employed as the modifier and bridge to immobilize the antibody. The nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and UV/vis spectra. The results showed that the MPA-CdS/RGO nanocomposites revealed enhanced photocurrent response due to excellent electron transport properties of RGO and the improved assembly of CdS nanoparticles onto RGO sheet with the introduction of MPA. Based on the dependence of the photocurrent decline on the concentration of IAA, the proposed photoelectrochemical immunosensor for IAA depicted a linear range from 0.1 to 1000 ng/mL with a lower detection limit (0.05 ng/mL). The high sensitivity, reproducibility and specificity of the method permitted the method suitable to be used in real samples.

Abstract
Quantum-dot-based photoelectrochemical sensors are powerful alternatives for the detection of chemicals and biochemical molecules compared to other sensor types, which is the primary reason as to why they have become a hot topic in nanotechnology-related analytical methods. These sensors basically consist of QDs immobilized by a linking molecule (linker) to an electrode, so that upon their illumination, a photocurrent is generated which depends on the type and concentration of the respective analyte in the immediate environment of the electrode. The present review provides an overview of recent developments in the fabrication methods and sensing concepts concerning direct and indirect interactions of the analyte with quantum dot modified electrodes. Furthermore, it describes in detail the broad range of different sensing applications of such quantum-dot-based photoelectrochemical sensors for inorganic and organic (small and macro-) molecules that have arisen in recent years. Finally, a number of aspects concerning current challenges on the way to achieving real-life applications of QD-based photochemical sensing are addressed.

Abstract
A facile electrodeposition technique was utilized to deposit single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with cadmium telluride (CdTe) with well-controlled size, density, surface morphology, and composition. By controlling the applied charge, the morphology of these hybrid nanostructures was altered from CdTe nanoparticles on SWNTs to SWNT/CdTe core/shell nanostructures and the composition of the CdTe nanoparticles was altered from Te-rich (29 at% Cd) to Cd-rich (79 at% Cd) CdTe by adjusting the deposition potential. The electrical and optoelectrical properties of these hybrid nanostructures showed that photo-induced current can be tuned by tailoring the conductivity type (n-type or p-type), morphology, and size of the CdTe nanostructures, with a maximum photosensitivity (ΔI/I(0)) of about 30% for SWNT/Cd-rich CdTe (n-type) core/shell nanostructures. This work demonstrates a novel approach for synthesizing metal chalcogenide/SWNT hybrid nanostructures for various electrical and optoelectrical applications.

Ferroferric Oxide Magnetic Nanoparticles Carbon Nanotubes Nanocomposite-Based Electrochemical Sensor Applied for Detection of Bisphenol A. ACTA ACUST UNITED AC 2013. Abstract
Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) combining with ferroferric oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles were used for electrochemical determination of bisphenol A (BPA). Fe3O4 nanoparticles with an average size of about 12 nm were synthesized. It was found that the Fe3O4-MWNTs nanocomposites-modified electrode could remarkably enhance the oxidation current of BPA. Chronoamperometry studies reveal that the amperometric response is rapid, stable, and offers a linear dependence over a range of BPA concentrations from 0.1 to 4 M. The proposed method can be used for evaluation of BPA in water samples. The electrochemical properties of the Fe3O4-MWNT nanocomposites are reasonably envisaged to be promising for providing a nanostructured platform in the development of electrochemical sensors or biosensors.

Abstract
Highy crystalline NiO nanoparticles are uniformly grown on the walls of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by atomic layer deposition (ALD) at moderate temperature.Their size and stoichiometry are controlled by the ALD process parameters. The obtained NiO/CNT hybrids exhibit excellent performance in the electro-oxidation of methanol.
