Catalytic Activation of NN Multiple Bonds: A Homogeneous Palladium Catalyst for Mechanistically Unprecedented Reduction of Azo Compounds

Construction of Trisubstituted Hydrazones via Base-Mediated Cascade Condensation N-Alkylation

A practical base-promoted tandem condensation N-alkylation reaction for the formation of trisubstituted hydrazones has been developed employing aldehydes and hydrazines with alkyl halides. Crucially, this reaction successfully overcomes chemoselectivity problems, allowing for the reaction of multiple components in a one-pot manner. Halo- and heterofunctional groups, as well as free hydroxyl and amino groups, are tolerated in this transformation to produce a wide range of trisubstituted hydrazones in good to excellent yields.

Mechanistic Studies on the Bismuth-Catalyzed Transfer Hydrogenation of Azoarenes

Organobismuth-catalyzed transfer hydrogenation has recently been disclosed as an example of low-valent Bi redox catalysis. However, its mechanistic details have remained speculative. Herein, we report experimental and computational studies that provide mechanistic insights into a Bi-catalyzed transfer hydrogenation of azoarenes using p-trifluoromethylphenol (4) and pinacolborane (5) as hydrogen sources. A kinetic analysis elucidated the rate orders in all components in the catalytic reaction and determined that 1 a (2,6-bis[N-(tert-butyl)iminomethyl]phenylbismuth) is the resting state. In the transfer hydrogenation of azobenzene using 1 a and 4, an equilibrium between 1 a and 1 a ⋅ [OAr]2 (Ar=p-CF3 -C6 H4 ) is observed, and its thermodynamic parameters are established through variable-temperature NMR studies. Additionally, pKa -gated reactivity is observed, validating the proton-coupled nature of the transformation. The ensuing 1 a ⋅ [OAr]2 is crystallographically characterized, and shown to be rapidly reduced to 1 a in the presence of 5. DFT calculations indicate a rate-limiting transition state in which the initial N-H bond is formed via concerted proton transfer upon nucleophilic addition of 1 a to a hydrogen-bonded adduct of azobenzene and 4. These studies guided the discovery of a second-generation Bi catalyst, the rate-limiting transition state of which is lower in energy, leading to catalytic transfer hydrogenation at lower catalyst loadings and at cryogenic temperature.

Reductive Arylation of Nitroarenes with Chloroarenes: Reducing Conditions Enable New Reactivity from Palladium Catalysts

Palladium-catalyzed C-N bond forming reactions are a key tool in modern synthetic organic chemistry. Despite advances in catalyst design enabling the use of a variety of aryl (pseudo)halides, the necessary aniline coupling partner is often synthesized in a discrete reduction step from a nitroarene. An ideal synthetic sequence would avoid the necessity of this step while maintaining the reliable reactivity of palladium catalysis. Herein, we describe how reducing conditions enable new chemical steps and reactivity from well-studied palladium catalysts, resulting in a new, useful transformation: the reductive arylation of nitroarenes with chloroarenes to form diarylamines. Mechanistic experiments suggest that under reducing conditions, BrettPhos-palladium complexes catalyze the dual N-arylation of typically inert azoarenes─generated via the in situ reduction of nitroarenes─via two distinct mechanisms. Initial N-arylation proceeds via a novel association-reductive palladation sequence followed by reductive elimination to yield an intermediate 1,1,2-triarylhydrazine. Arylation of this intermediate by the same catalyst via a traditional amine arylation sequence forms a transient tetraarylhydrazine, unlocking reductive N-N bond cleavage to liberate the desired product. The resulting reaction allows for the synthesis of diarylamines bearing a variety of synthetically valuable functionalities and heteroaryl cores in high yield.

Rhenium Tricarbonyl Complexes of Azodicarboxylate Ligands

The excellent π-accepting azodicarboxylic esters adcOR (R = Et, iPr, tBu, Bn (CH₂-C₆H₅) and Ph) and the piperidinyl amide derivative adcpip were used as bridging chelate ligands in dinuclear Re(CO)₃ complexes [{Re(CO)₃Cl}₂(µ-adcOR)] and [{Re(CO)₃Cl}₂(µ-adcpip)]. From the adcpip ligand the mononuclear derivatives [Re(CO)₃Cl(adcpip)] and [Re(CO)₃(PPh₃)(µ-adcpip)]Cl were also obtained. Optimised geometries from density functional theory (DFT) calculations show syn and anti isomers for the dinuclear fac-Re(CO)₃ complexes at slightly different energies but they were not distinguishable from experimental IR or UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy. The electrochemistry of the adc complexes showed reduction potentials slightly below 0.0 V vs. the ferrocene/ferrocenium couple. Attempts to generate the radicals [{Re(CO)₃Cl}₂(µ-adcOR)]^•- failed as they are inherently unstable, losing very probably first the Cl^- coligand and then rapidly cleaving one [Re(CO)₃] fragment. Consequently, we found signals in EPR very probably due to mononuclear radical complexes [Re(CO)₃(solv)(adc)]^•. The underlying Cl^-→solvent exchange was modelled for the mononuclear [Re(CO)₃Cl(adcpip)] using DFT calculations and showed a markedly enhanced Re-Cl labilisation for the reduced compared with the neutral complex. Both the easy reduction with potentials ranging roughly from -0.2 to -0.1 V for the adc ligands and the low-energy NIR absorptions in the 700 to 850 nm range place the adc ligands with their lowest-lying π* orbital being localised on the azo function, amongst comparable bridging chelate N^N coordinating ligands with low-lying π* orbitals of central azo, tetrazine or pyrazine functions. Comparative (TD)DFT-calculations on the Re(CO)₃Cl complexes of the adcpip ligand using the quite established basis set and functionals M06-2X/def2TZVP/LANL2DZ/CPCM(THF) and the more advanced TPSSh/def2-TZVP(+def2-ECP for Re)/CPCMC(THF) for single-point calculations with BP86/def2-TZVP(+def2-ECP for Re)/CPCMC(THF) optimised geometries showed a markedly better agreement of the latter with the experimental XRD, IR and UV-Vis absorption data.

Palladium-Catalysed Intermolecular Direct C–H Bond Arylation of Heteroarenes with Reagents Alternative to Aryl Halides: Current State of the Art

Abstract:

Abstract: This unprecedented review with 322 references provides a critical up-to-date picture of the Pd-catalysed intermolecular direct C–H bond arylation of heteroarenes with arylating reagents alternative to aryl halides that include aryl sulfonates (aryl triflates, tosylates, mesylates, and imidazole-1-sulfonates), diaryliodonium salts, [(diacetoxy)iodo]arenes, arenediazonium salts, 1-aryltriazenes, arylhydrazines and N’-arylhydrazides, arenesulfonyl chlorides, sodium arenesulfinates, arenesulfinic acids, and arenesulfonohydrazides. Particular attention has been paid to summarise the preparation of the various arylating reagents and to highlight the practicality, versatility, and limitations of the various developed arylation protocols, also comparing their results with those achieved in analogous Pd-catalysed arylation reactions involving the use of aryl halides as electrophiles. Mechanistic proposals have also been briefly summarised and discussed. However, data concerning Pd-catalysed direct C–H bond arylations involving the C–H bonds of aryl substituents of the examined heteroarene derivatives have not been taken into account.

Synthesis of a palladium based MOF via an effective post-synthetic modification approach and its catalytic activity towards Heck type coupling reactions

The complete exchange of metal nodes in a MOF with the Pd(ii) ions was done without losing the structural integrity. The new MOF turned out to be an excellent catalyst for the C–C bond formation via un-reacted cleavage C–N bond of arylhydrazines.

Azouracil and Its Cu(II)-Catalyzed Cyclization to an Anticancer Active Triazole Derivative: Symmetrical and Asymmetrical Reductive Cleavage, DNA Interaction, and Molecular Docking Studies

The 6-amino-1,3-dimethyl uracil-based azo derivative (p-carboxy phenylazouracil, L11) undergoes Cu(II)-catalyzed cyclization to a triazole derivative, namely, 1,3-dimethyl-8-(p-carboxy phenyl) azapurine (L11P). Interestingly, the azo functionality of L11 undergoes both symmetrical and asymmetrical reductive cleavage at two different reaction conditions. The chloride salts of Mn(II), Ni(II), and Pd(II) catalyze reductive cleavage of an azo moiety in an asymmetric manner, producing a new uracil hydrazine derivative (A3). On the other hand, hydrazine catalyzes symmetrical reductive cleavage of the azo moiety of L11, resulting in 5,6-diamino-1,3-dimethyl uracil (A2) along with the starting p-aminobenzoic acid (A1). Time-dependent density functional theoretical (TD-DFT) studies provide optimized geometries of L11, L11P, and A3 along with their orbital energies. The L11 and L11P bind firmly to genomic DNA of E. coli with a site size n ∼ 9 and n ∼ 8. The L11P shows anticancer activity on selected murine lymphoma cancer cell lines (DL, YAC1, and 2PK3). In addition, its antiproliferative activity is measured with several cancer cell lines and found hemocompatible toward blood cells. Corresponding molecular docking studies of L11P with caspase-3 (cysteine-aspartic proteases) unlock their mode of interaction.

Azo-functionalized microporous organic polymers: synthesis and applications in CO2 capture and conversion

Azo-functionalized MOPs (Azo-MOPs) were synthesized via oxidative polymerization of aromatic amines catalyzed by t-BuOCl/NaI (25 °C, 1 h, yield: >95%), which displayed an excellent coordinating ability with a Ru complex. The resulting Ru-coordinated Azo-MOPs displayed high CO2 capacity and high performances for catalyzing the methylation of amines with CO2 under low pressure (0.5 MPa).

Recent advances on the chemistry of transition metal complexes of 2-(arylazo)pyridines and its arylamino derivatives

Recent advancement on the redox properties of a selection of transition metal complexes of the azoaromatic ligands: bidentate L(1) [2-(arylazo)pyridine] and tridentate HL(2) [2-(aminoarylphenylazo)pyridine] are described and compared. Due to the presence of a low lying azo-centered π*-orbital, these azoaromatic ligands may exist in multiple valent states. The coordination chemistry of the L(1) ligands was thoroughly studied during the 1980s. These complexes undergo facile reduction in solution at low accessible potentials. One electron reduced azo-complexes, though known for a long time to occur in solution, have only recently been isolated in a crystalline state. New synthetic protocols for the synthesis of metal-bound azo-radical complexes have been developed. Low-valent metal complexes such as metal carbonyls have been found to be excellent starting materials for this purpose. In a few selected cases, syntheses of these complexes were also achieved from very high valent metal oxides using triphenylphosphine as both a reducing and oxo-abstracting agent. Issues related to the ambiguities of the electronic structures in the azo-metal complexes have been discussed considering bond parameters, redox and spectral properties. Unusual redox events such as RIET (Redox-Induced Electron Transfer) phenomena in a few systems have been elaborated and compared with the known example. Novel examples of N=N bond cleavage reactions via four-electron reduction and subsequent C-N bond formation in metal-bound coordinated ligands have been noted.
