Rare-Earth Metal Mixed Chloro/Methyl Compounds: Heterogeneous–Homogeneous Borderline Catalysts in 1,3-Diene Polymerization

Reactivity of a Neutral Yttrium(III) Trimethyl Complex toward Brønsted and Lewis Acids

The present study corroborates that the neutral tridentate N-ligand 1,4,7-trimethyl-triazacyclononane (Me3TACN) qualifies as a versatile platform to study selective ligand exchange with rare-earth-metal alkyl complexes, herein [(Me3TACN)YMe3]. Treatment with Brønsted-acidic bis(dimethylsilyl)amine, HN(SiHMe2)2, gave selectively the mono-exchanged heteroleptic complex [(Me3TACN)YMe2{N(SiHMe2)2}]. Depending on the molecular ratio employed, the reaction of [(Me3TACN)YMe3] with AlMe3 resulted in the isolation/crystallization of [(Me3TACN)YMe2(AlMe4)] [1 : 1] or ion-separated [(Me3TACN)YMe(AlMe4)][AlMe4] [1 : 2] and [(Me3TACN)YMe(AlMe4)][Al2Me7] [1 : 3]. Analogous reactions with the heavier group 13 methyls GaMe3 and InMe3 generated mixed methyl/tetramethylgallato complex [(Me3TACN)YMe2(GaMe4)] and ion-separated [{(Me3TACN)YMe2}2{μ-Me}][InMe4]. Finally, dimethylalane, HAlMe2, converted [(Me3TACN)YMe3] into heteroaluminate [(Me3TACN)Y(HAlMe3)3], representing an AlMe3-supported, molecular yttrium trihydride complex. All compounds were investigated by single crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD), homo- and heteronuclear (13C, 27Al, 89Y, 115In) NMR as well as IR spectroscopies and elemental analyses.

Rare Earths-The Answer to Everything

Rare earths, scandium, yttrium, and the fifteen lanthanoids from lanthanum to lutetium, are classified as critical metals because of their ubiquity in daily life. They are present in magnets in cars, especially electric cars; green electricity generating systems and computers; in steel manufacturing; in glass and light emission materials especially for safety lighting and lasers; in exhaust emission catalysts and supports; catalysts in artificial rubber production; in agriculture and animal husbandry; in health and especially cancer diagnosis and treatment; and in a variety of materials and electronic products essential to modern living. They have the potential to replace toxic chromates for corrosion inhibition, in magnetic refrigeration, a variety of new materials, and their role in agriculture may expand. This review examines their role in sustainability, the environment, recycling, corrosion inhibition, crop production, animal feedstocks, catalysis, health, and materials, as well as considering future uses.

Divalent Lanthanide Tetraisobutylaluminates: Reactivity and Living Isoprene Polymerization

Lanthanide (Ln) tetraisobutylaluminates constitute key components in commercial 1,3-diene polymerization catalysts, and likewise are the homogeneous rare-earth-metal catalysts of prime industrial importance. Discrete divalent rare-earth-metal complexes [Ln(AliBu₄ )₂ ] (Ln=Sm, Eu, Yb) reported here display the first structurally characterized homoleptic metal tetraisobutylaluminates. Treatment of [Ln(AliBu₄ )₂ ] with C₂ Cl₆ gives access to Sm^II /Sm^III mixed-valence cluster [Sm₆ Cl₈ (AliBu₄ )₆ ] and the Yb^II cluster [Yb₄ Cl₄ (AliBu₄ )₄ ], respectively. Reaction with B(C₆ F₅ )₃ leads to hydride abstraction and formation of arene-coordinated hydroborates such as [Sm{HB(C₆ F₅ )₃ }₂ (toluene)₂ ]. Complexes [Ln(AliBu₄ )₂ ] engage in single-component isoprene polymerization, affording high cis-1,4 polyisoprenes with narrow molecular weight distributions. Binary [Yb(AliBu₄ )₂ ]/[HNPhMe₂ ][B(C₆ F₅ )₄ ] fabricates polyisoprene in a perfectly living manner. The catalytically active species are scrutinized by NMR spectroscopy.

Access to Disentangled Ultrahigh Molecular Weight Polyethylene via a Binuclear Synergic Effect

Disentangled ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (dis-UHMWPE) has excellent processability but can be achieved under extreme conditions. Herein, we report ethylene polymerization with the binuclear half-sandwich scandium complexes C1-Sc₂ and C2-Sc₂ to afford UHMWPE. C1-Sc₂ bearing a short linker shows higher activity and gives higher molecular weight PEs than C2-Sc₂ containing a flexible spacer and the mononuclear Sc₁ . Strikingly, all UHMWPEs isolated from C1-Sc₂ under broad temperature range (25-120 °C) and wide ethylene pressures (2-13 bar) feature very low degree of entanglement as proved by rheological test, DSC annealing study and SEM. These dis-UHMWPEs are facilely mediated solid-state-process at 130 °C and their tensile strength and modulus reach up to 149.2 MPa and 1.5 GPa, respectively. DFT simulations reveal that the formation of dis-UHMWPE is attributed to the binuclear synergic effect and the agostic interaction between the active center and the growing chain.

C-H-Bond Activation and Isoprene Polymerization Studies Applying Pentamethylcyclopentadienyl-Supported Rare-Earth-Metal Bis(Tetramethylaluminate) and Dimethyl Complexes

As previously shown for lutetium and yttrium, 1,2,3,4,5-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl (C₅Me₅ = Cp*)-bearing rare-earth metal dimethyl half-sandwich complexes [Cp*LnMe₂]₃ are now also accessible for holmium, dysprosium, and terbium via tetramethylaluminato cleavage of [Cp*Ln(AlMe₄)₂] with diethyl ether (Ho, Dy) and tert-butyl methyl ether (TBME) (Tb). C–H-bond activation and ligand redistribution reactions are observed in case of terbium and are dominant for the next larger-sized gadolinium, as evidenced by the formation of mixed methyl/methylidene clusters [(Cp*Ln)₅(CH₂)(Me)₈] and metallocene dimers [Cp*₂Ln(AlMe₄)]₂ (Ln = Tb, Gd). Applying TBME as a “cleaving” reagent can result in both TBME deprotonation and ether cleavage, as shown for the formation of the 24-membered macrocycle [(Cp*Gd)₂(Me)(CH₂OtBu)₂(AlMe₄)]₄ or monolanthanum complex [Cp*La(AlMe₄){Me₃Al(CH₂)OtBu}] and monoyttrium complex [Cp*Y(AlMe₄)(Me₃AlOtBu)], respectively. Complexes [Cp*Ln(AlMe₄)₂] (Ln = Ho, Dy, Tb, Gd) and [Cp*LnMe₂]₃ (Ln = Ho, Dy) are applied in isoprene and 1,3-butadiene polymerization, upon activation with borates [Ph₃C][B(C₆F₅)₄] and [PhNHMe₂][B(C₆F₅)₄], as well as borane B(C₆F₅)₃. The trans-directing effect of AlMe₃ in the binary systems [Cp*Ln(AlMe₄)₂]/borate is revealed and further corroborated by the fabrication of high-cis-1,4 polybutadiene (97%) with “aluminum-free” [Cp*DyMe₂]₃/[Ph₃C][B(C₆F₅)₄]. The formation of multimetallic active species is supported by the polymerization activity of pre-isolated cluster [(Cp*Ho)₃Me₄(CH₂)(thf)₂].

Anilido-oxazoline-ligated rare-earth metal complexes: synthesis, characterization and highly cis-1,4-selective polymerization of isoprene

Anilido-oxazoline-ligated rare-earth metal dialkyl complexes have been synthesized and structurally characterized. The complexes exhibited strong fluorescence emissions and good catalytic performance on isoprene polymerization with high cis-1,4-selectivity. The treatment of anilido-oxazoline precursors ortho-C6H4[NH(2,6-R12C6H3)][C[double bond, length as m-dash]NC(R2,R3)CH2O] (R1 = R2 = R3 = Me (HL1); R1 = iPr, R2 = R3 = Me (HL2); R1 = R2 = iPr, R3 = H (HL3); and R1 = iPr, R2 = R3 = H (HL4)) with an equimolar amount of Ln(CH2SiMe3)3(THF)2 (Ln = Sc, Y) afforded rare-earth metal complexes L1-4-Ln(CH2SiMe3)2(THF)n (L1-Sc (1), n = 1; L2-Sc (2), n = 0; L1-Y (3), n = 1; L2-Y (4), n = 1; L3-Y (5), n = 1; and L4-Y (6), n = 1) in good yields. The complexes are stable in both the solid state and solution. Single crystal X-ray diffraction study showed that complexes 1, 3 and 4 exhibit a distorted trigonal bipyramidal configuration, while complex 2 is pseudo-tetrahedral without coordinated THF. The luminescence properties of complexes 1-4 were investigated and the emission maxima were found in the range of 465-477 nm. DFT and TD-DFT studies were carried out to explore their characteristic electronic structures and gain insight into their optical properties. Upon activation with organic borates, the reported complexes exhibited high activity and cis-1,4-selectivity for isoprene polymerization. The nature of the central metal and substituent groups in oxazoline have an influence on the cis-1,4-selectivity.

1,3-Diene Polymerization Mediated by Homoleptic Tetramethylaluminates of the Rare-Earth Metals

During the past two decades homoleptic tetramethylaluminates of the trivalent rare-earth metals, Ln(AlMe4)3, have emerged as useful components for efficient catalyst design in the field of 1,3-diene polymerization. Previous work had focused on isoprene polymerization applying Ln(AlMe4)3 precatalysts with Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Gd and Y, in the presence of Et2AlCl as an activator. Polymerizations employing Ln(AlMe4)3 with Ln = La, Y and Nd along with borate/borane co-catalysts [Ph3C][B(C6F5)4], [PhNMe2H][B(C6F5)4] and [B(C6F5)3] were mainly investigated for reasons of comparison with ancillary ligand-supported systems (cf. half-sandwich complexes). The present study investigates into a total of eleven rare-earth elements, namely Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Y, Er and Lu. A full overview on the polymerization behavior of Ln(AlMe4)3 in the presence of perfluorinated borate/borane cocatalysts and R2AlCl-type activators (R = Me, Et) is provided, probing the monomers isoprene and 1,3-butadiene (and preliminary ethylene). Virtually complete cis-1,4-selectivities are obtained for several catalyst/cocatalyst combinations (e.g., Gd(AlMe4)3/Me2AlCl, >99.9%). Insights into the ‘black box’ of active species are obtained by indirect observations via screening of pre-reaction time and cocatalyst concentration. The microstructure of the polydienes is investigated by combined 1H/13C NMR and ATR-IR spectroscopies. Furthermore, the reaction of [LuMe6(Li(thf)x)3] with AlMe3 has been applied as a new strategy for the efficient synthesis of Lu(AlMe4)3. The solid-state structures of Gd(AlMe4)3 and Tb(AlMe4)3 are reported.

Cis-1,4-Polymerization of Isoprene by 1,3-Bis(oxazolinymethylidene)isoindoline-Ligated Rare-Earth Metal Dialkyl Complexes

A series of novel chiral nonmetallocene pincer-type rare-earth metal dialkyl complexes bearing the chiral monoanionic tridentate C₂-symmetric 1,3-bis(oxazolinymethylidene)isoindoline (BOXMI-H) ligand (BOXMI)Ln(CH₂SiMe₃)₂ 1⁻3 (1: Ln = Sc, yield = 57%; 2: Ln = Lu, yield = 55%; 3: Ln = Y, yield = 62%) have been prepared in moderate yields via the acid-base reaction between the BOXMI ligand and rare-earth metal tri(trimethylsilylmethyl) complexes. The X-ray diffractions show that both of the complexes 1 and 2 contain one BOXMI ligand and two trimethylsilylmethyl ligands, adopting a distorted trigonal bipyramidal configuration. In the presence of a cocatalyst such as borate and AlR₃, these complexes 1⁻3 exhibit high activities of up to 6.8 × 10⁴ (g of polymer)/(molLn h) and high cis-1,4 selectivities of up to 97% in the polymerization of isoprene in toluene, yielding the cis-1,4-polyisoprenes with heavy molecular weights (Mn of up to 710,000 g/mol) and bimodal molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn = 2.0⁻4.5).

Controlled polymerization of isoprene promoted by a type of hemilabile XPN3 (X = O, S) ligand supported cobalt(ii) complexes: the role of a hemilabile donor on the level of control

Cobalt dichloride complexes (Co1–Co9) carrying a novel type of hemilabile donor PN³ (L1–L3) or XPN³ (L4–L6, X = O; L7–L9, X = S) are reported as precursors for controlled polymerization of isoprene.

Di and trinuclear rare-earth metal complexes supported by 3-amido appended indolyl ligands: synthesis, characterization and catalytic activity towards isoprene 1,4-cis polymerization

Different di and trinuclear rare-earth metal complexes supported by 3-amido appended indolyl ligands were synthesized and their catalytic activities towards isoprene polymerization were investigated. Treatment of [RE(CH₂SiMe₃)₃(thf)₂] with 1 equiv. of 3-(CyN[double bond, length as m-dash]CH)C₈H₅NH in toluene or in THF afforded dinuclear rare-earth metal alkyl complexes having indolyl ligands in different hapticities with central metals {[η²:η¹-μ-η¹-3-(CyNCH(CH₂SiMe₃))Ind]RE-(thf)(CH₂SiMe₃)}₂ (Cy = cyclohexyl, Ind = Indolyl, RE = Yb (1), Er (2), Y (3)) or {[η¹-μ-η¹-3-(CyNCH(CH₂SiMe₃))Ind]RE-(thf)₂(CH₂SiMe₃)}₂ (RE = Yb (4), Er (5), Y (6), Gd (7)), respectively. These two series of dinuclear complexes could be transferred to each other easily by only changing the solvents in the process. Reaction of [Er(CH₂SiMe₃)₃(thf)₂] with 1 equiv. of 3-t-butylaminomethylindole 3-(^tBuNHCH₂)C₈H₅NH in THF afforded the unexpected trinuclear erbium alkyl complex [η²:η¹-μ-η¹-3-(^tBuNCH₂)Ind]₄Er₃(thf)₅(CH₂SiMe₃) (8), which can also be prepared by reaction of 3 equiv. of [Er(CH₂SiMe₃)₃(thf)₂] with 4 equiv. of 3-(^tBuNHCH₂)C₈H₅NH in THF. Accordingly, complexes [η²:η¹-μ-η¹-3-(^tBuNCH₂)Ind]₄RE₃(thf)₅(CH₂SiMe₃) (RE = Y (9), Dy (10)) were prepared by reactions of 3 equiv. of [RE(CH₂SiMe₃)₃(thf)₂] with 4 equiv. of 3-(^tBuNHCH₂)C₈H₅NH in THF. Reactions of [RE(CH₂SiMe₃)₃(thf)₂] with 1 equiv. of 3-t-butylaminomethylindole 3-(^tBuNHCH₂)C₈H₅NH in THF, followed by treatment with 1 equiv. of [(2,6-ⁱPr₂C₆H₃)N[double bond, length as m-dash]CHNH(C₆H₃ⁱPr₂-2,6)] afforded, after workup, the dinuclear rare-earth metal complexes [η¹-μ-η¹:η¹-3-(^tBuNCH₂)Ind][η¹-μ-η¹:η³-3-(^tBuNCH₂)Ind]RE₂(thf)[(η³-2,6-ⁱPr₂C₆H₃)NCHN(C₆H₃ⁱPr₂-2,6)]₂(RE = Er (11), Y (12)) having the indolyl ligands bonded with the rare-earth metal in different ligations. All new complexes 1-12 were fully characterized by spectroscopic methods and elemental analyses, and their structures were determined by X-ray crystallographic analyses. It was found that, except for complexes 1, 4, 11 and 12, all complexes were highly efficient catalysts for selective isoprene polymerization (up to 99% 1,4-cis selectivity) with the cooperation of co-catalysts, and the trinuclear complexes displayed advantages over dinuclear complexes in terms of molecular weight of polymers.

Synthesis and structural diversity of trivalent rare-earth metal diisopropylamide complexes

A series of rare-earth metal diisopropylamide complexes has been obtained via salt metathesis employing LnCl3(THF)x and lithium (LDA) or sodium diisopropylamide (NDA) in n-hexane. Reactions with AM : Ln ratios ≥3 gave ate complexes (AM)Ln(NiPr2)4(THF)n (n = 1, 2; Ln = Sc, Y, La, Lu; AM = Li, Na) in good yields. For smaller rare-earth metal centres such as scandium and lutetium, a Li : Ln ratio = 2.5 accomplished ate-free tris(amido) complexes Ln(NiPr2)3(THF). The chloro-bridged dimeric derivatives [Ln(NiPr2)2(μ-Cl)(THF)]2 (Ln = Sc, Y, La, Lu) could be obtained in high yields for Li : Ln = 1.6-2. The product resulting from the Li : La = 1 : 1.6 reaction revealed a crystal structure containing two different molecules in the crystal lattice, [La(NiPr2)2(THF)(μ-Cl)]2·La(NiPr2)3(THF)2. Recrystallization of the chloro-bridged dimers led to the formation of the monomeric species Ln(NiPr2)2Cl(THF)2 (Ln = Sc, Lu) and La(NiPr2)3(THF)2. The reaction of YCl3 and LDA with Li : Y = 2 in the absence of THF gave a bimetallic ate complex LiY(NiPr2)4 with a chain-like structure. For scandium, the equimolar reactions with LDA or NDA yielded crystals of tetrametallic mono(amido) species, {[Sc(NiPr2)Cl2(THF)]2(LiCl)}2 and [Sc(NiPr2)Cl2(THF)]4, respectively. Depending on the Ln(iii) size, AM, and presence of a donor solvent, ate complexes (AM)Ln(NiPr2)4(THF)n show distinct dynamic behaviour as revealed by variable temperature NMR spectroscopy. The presence of weak LnCH(iPr) β-agostic interactions, as indicated by Ln-N-C angles <105°, is corroborated by DFT calculations and NBO analysis.

Isoselective 3,4-(co)polymerization of bio-renewable myrcene using NSN-ligated rare-earth metal precursor: an approach to a new elastomer

Perfect 3,4-regio- (>99%) and isospecific stereo-selective (mmmm > 99%) PMY were achieved by a lutetium dialkyl complex bearing a NSN-bidentate β-diimidosulfonate ligand for the first time.

Cerium(III/IV) formamidinate chemistry, and a stable cerium(IV) diolate

Four new cerium(III) formamidinate complexes comprising [Ce(p-TolForm)3 ], [Ce(DFForm)3 (thf)2 ], [Ce(DFForm)3 ], and [Ce(EtForm)3 ] were synthesized by protonolysis reactions using [Ce{N(SiMe3 )2 }3 ] and formamidines of varying functionality, namely N,N'-bis(4-methylphenyl)formamidine (p-TolFormH), N,N'-bis(2,6-difluorophenyl)formamidine (DFFormH), and the sterically more demanding N,N'-bis(2,6-diethylphenyl)formamidine (EtFormH). The bimetallic cerium lithium complex [LiCe(DFForm)4 ] was synthesized by treating a mixture of [Ce{N(SiHMe2 )2 }3 (thf)2 ] and [Li{N(SiHMe2 )2 }] with four equivalents of DFFormH in toluene. Oxidation of the trivalent cerium(III) formamidinate complexes by trityl chloride (Ph3 CCl) caused dramatic color changes, although the cerium(IV) species appeared transient and reformed cerium(III) complexes and N'-trityl-N,N'-diarylformamidines shortly after oxidation. The first structurally characterized homoleptic cerium(IV) formamidinate complex [Ce(p-TolForm)4 ] was obtained through a protonolysis reaction between [Ce{N(SiHMe2 )2 }4 ] and four equivalents of p-TolFormH. [Ce{N(SiHMe2 )2 }4 ] was also treated with DFFormH and EtFormH, but the resulting cerium(IV) complexes decomposed before isolation was possible. The new cerium(IV) silylamide complex [Ce{N(SiMe3 )2 }3 (bda)0.5 ]2 (bda=1,4-benzenediolato) was synthesized by treatment of [Ce{N(SiMe3 )2 }3 ] with half an equivalent of 1,4-benzoquinone, and showed remarkable resistance towards protonolysis or reduction.
