Abstract
Long-chain cyclic carbonates (LC-CC) are attractive building blocks and non-ionic surfactants. We demonstrate a convenient methodology to prepare LC-CC in miniemulsions of epoxide droplets in water. The pre-organization and confinement of the reagents from H-bond and hydrophobic interactions allow the target process to proceed at mild temperatures under atmospheric CO2.

Abstract
Organic transformations exclusively in water as an environmentally friendly and safe medium have drawn significant interest in the recent years. Moreover, transition metal-free synthesis of enantiopure molecules in water will have a great deal of attention as the system will mimic the natural enzymatic reactions. In this work, a new set of proline-derived hydrophobic organocatalysts have been synthesized and utilized for asymmetric Michael reactions in water as the sole reaction medium. Among the various catalysts screened, the catalyst 1 is indeed efficient for stereoselective 1,4-conjugated Michael additions (dr: >97:3, ee up to >99.9%) resulting in high chemical yields (up to 95%) in a very short reaction time (1 h) at room temperature. This methodology provides a robust, green, and convenient protocol and can thus be an important addition to the arsenal of the asymmetric Michael addition reaction. Upon successful implementation, the present strategy also led to the formation of an optically active octahydroindole, the key component found in many natural products.

Abstract
This study describes the design and synthesis of mimetic peptides modelled on the catalytic active site of the fructose-1,6-bisphosphate aldolase (FBPA) enzyme. The synthesized peptides consisting of the turn motifs and catalytic site amino acids of FBPA enzyme were evaluated for catalytic activity in direct asymmetric aldol reactions of ketones and aldehydes. The influence of substrate scope, catalyst loading and solvents including water, on the reaction were also investigated. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and circular dichroism (CD) were used to determine the secondary structure of the peptides to provide an understanding of the structure–activity relationship. The peptides showed catalytic activity and the aldol products were obtained in low yields (up to 44%), but excellent enantioselectivity (up to 93%) and moderate diastereoselectivity (65 : 35). Novel asymmetric aldol reaction catalysing fructose-1,6-bisphosphate aldolase peptide mimics with secondary structural motifs.![]()

Abstract
The bottom-up synthesis of artificial, life-like systems promises to enable the study of emergent properties distinctive to life. Here, we report protocell systems generated from phase-separated building blocks. Vesicle protocells self-reproduce through a phase-transfer mechanism, catalysing their own formation. Dissipative self-assembly by the protocells is achieved when a hydrolysis step to destroy the surfactant is introduced. Competition between micelle and vesicle based replicators for a common feedstock shows that environmental conditions can control what species predominates: under basic conditions vesicles predominate, but in a neutral medium micelles are selected for via a mechanism which inhibits vesicle formation. Finally, the protocells enable orthogonal reactivity by catalysing in situ formation of an amphiphilic organocatalyst, which after incorporation into the vesicle bilayer enantioselectively forms a secondary product.

Abstract
For the first time, an inclusion complex has been crafted between a carbohydrate-based molecule and a β-cyclodextrin (CD) hydrophobic cavity for asymmetric catalytic applications. This novel d-glucosamine-based inclusion compound has been synthesized in high yields using an innovative and proficient acoustic cavitation technology and well characterized using various techniques, such as infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and other spectroscopic techniques. It was observed that the inclusion of a d-glucosamine derivative into the hydrophobic cavity of β-CD increased its surface area and thermal stability. This catalytic system worked well in water for the direct aldol reaction to afford the products in excellent yields with high diastereo- and enantioselectivities.

Abstract
The self-assembly of model [P]RWG lipopeptides (P: l-proline, R: l-arginine, W: l-tryptophan, G: l-glycine), containing one or two aliphatic octadecyl (C18) chains in water and cyclohexanone/water solutions was examined. The self-assembly of mixtures of these RWG and PRWG lipopeptides was also investigated. These materials presented a similar critical aggregation concentration of ∼4.0 × 10-4 wt% and were characterized by unordered secondary structures with some β-sheet content. TEM and cryo-TEM revealed the presence of mainly nanotape structures with micelles observed for systems rich in PRWG(C18H37). Analysis of detailed SAXS form factor measurements revealed the presence of bilayers 3-4 nm thick while the PRWG(C18H37) micelles have a core radius of approximately 3 nm, and a shell thickness of 2 nm. For the cyclohexanone/water systems polymorphs containing cluster aggregates (with radius of 0.25 nm to 0.50 nm) and some elongated structures (with radius of 5.7 nm to 26.1 nm) were seen. Longer structures were formed with the increase of the proline-containing lipopeptide content. The catalytic activity of these peptides was assessed using a model nitro-aldol reaction. The concentration of water in the reaction system influenced the conversion, higher content promoted better efficiency for the water systems, but the opposite was observed for the cyclohexanone/water samples.

Abstract
A poor or mediocre stereoselectivity is a key roadblock for a chiral catalyst to find practical adoptions. We report a facile method to create a tunable chiral space near a chiral catalyst to augment its selectivity. The space was created rationally through templated polymerization within cross-linked micelles, using readily available amino acid derivatives. It provided gated entrance of reactants to the catalyst, enabling a mediocre prolinamide to catalyze aldol condensation in water with excellent yields and ee, in a size- and shape-selective manner.

Abstract
A series of novel proline-based organocatalysts with amide and thiourea-amine units (7a–7f) were developed and evaluated in the asymmetric aldol reaction of 4-nitrobenzaldehyde with cyclohexanone. The organocatalyst (7c or 7d, 5 mol%) exhibited efficient catalytic activity to afford aldol products in high diastereoselectivity (up to >99:1), enantioselectivity (up to >99%), and yield (up to >96%) at 0 °C in saturated brine without adding an acid. Aldol products of benzaldehyde derivatives almost universally provide high diastereoselectivity and enantioselectivity.

Abstract
In this work, an efficient method for the immobilization of L-proline on magnetic nanoparticles was offered and evaluated as a recoverable magnetic nanocatalyst for synthesis of 2,4,6-triarylpyridines through one-pot three-component reaction of acetophenone, aryl aldehydes and ammonium acetate. This article is the first report of the catalytic application of L-proline functionalized magnetic nanoparticles in organic reactions as a magnetic nanocatalyst. This novel magnetic nanocatalyst proved to be effective and provided the products in high to excellent yield under solvent-free conditions. The structure of obtained nanoparticles was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometry (FT-IR), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). TGA result revealed that it is stable up to 200 °C for using as a catalyst in organic reactions. FE-SEM image of the synthesized nanocatalyst showed that it has nearly core-shell spherical shape and uniform size distribution with an average size about 80 nm. Moreover, the catalyst could be easily recovered by facile separation by magnetic forces and recycled for several times without significant loss of its catalytic activity. The benefits of this study are simplicity, nontoxicity, low cost, simple workup, and an environmentally benign nature.

J Comput Chem 2017; 38:2268-2275. Abstract
The mechanism of the HBr-catalyzed Friedel-Crafts-type reaction between β-naphthol and HCHO was investigated by DFT to improve this reaction. The HBr-H2 O co-catalyzed the preferential pathway undergoes the concerted nucleophilic addition and hydrogen shift, stepwise followed by H2 O elimination and the CC bond formation. The origin of the high catalytic activity of HBr is ascribed to CH···Br- and OH···Br- interactions, which suggest that the active species is Br- . Moreover, water molecules efficiently assist in improving the activity of Br- . The computational results show that solvent polarity profoundly affects the activation barriers. To our delight, the activation barrier of the rate-determining step for the favored pathway in water is comparable (0.6 kcal/mol difference) with that in acetonitrile. The experimental observation further confirmed our results and demonstrated that the title reaction can be successfully achieved "on water." Therefore, we open a new efficient and green strategy for the synthesis of biphenol derivatives. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
