Abstract
We present an organophotoredox-catalyzed direct Csp3-H alkylation of 3,4-dihydroquinoxalin-2-ones employing N-(acyloxy)pthalimides to provide corresponding products in good yields. A broad spectrum of NHPI esters (1°, 2°, 3°, and sterically encumbered) participates in the photoinduced alkylation of a variety of 3,4-dihydroquinoxalin-2-ones. In general, mild conditions, broad scope with good functional group tolerance, and scalability are the salient features of this direct alkylation process.

Abstract
We have synthesised and characterised the complex Ni(tpy)2 (tpy = 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine). This formally Ni(0) complex is paramagnetic both in the solid state and in solution (S = 2). The crystal structure shows an octahedral geometry, with molecules arranged in independent dimers involving π-stacking between pairs of complexes. Magnetic measurementes and DFT calculations suggest the existence of temperature-dependent intermolecular antiferromagnetic coupling in the solid state.

Abstract
Herein, an electrochemically driven NiH-catalyzed reductive coupling of alkyl halides and alkyl alkenes for the construction of Csp3 -Csp3 bonds is firstly reported. Notably, alkyl halides serve dual function as coupling substrates and as hydrogen sources to generate NiH species under electrochemical conditions. The tunable nature of this reaction is realized by introducing an intramolecular coordinating group to the substrate, where the product can be easily adjusted to give the desired branched products. The method proceeds under mild conditions, exhibits a broad substrate scope, and affords moderate to excellent yields with over 70 examples, including late-stage modification of natural products and drug derivatives. Mechanistic insights offer evidence for an electrochemically driven coupling process. The sp3 -carbon-halogen bonds can be activated through single electron transfer (SET) by the nickel catalyst in its low valence state, generated by cathodic reduction, and the generation of NiH species from alkyl halides is pivotal to this transformation.

Abstract
Nickel-catalyzed cross-coupling of unactivated tertiary alkyl electrophiles with alkylmetal reagents is still a challenge. We report herein a nickel-catalyzed Negishi cross-coupling of alkyl halides, including unactivated tertiary halides, with boron-stabilized organozinc reagent BpinCH2ZnI, yielding versatile organoboron products with high functional-group tolerance. Importantly, the Bpin group was found to be indispensable for accessing the quaternary carbon center. The synthetic practicability of the prepared quaternary organoboronates was demonstrated by their conversion to other useful compounds.

Abstract
Berkeleylactone A is a potent 16-membered macrolactone antibiotic, recently isolated from a coculture of Berkeley Pit Lake fungi. Although its antimicrobial activity has already been investigated, little is known about the structure-activity relationship. Based on our previous synthetic studies, a series of berkeleylactone A derivatives were synthesized and evaluated for their in vitro antimicrobial activities against methicillin-sensitive and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains. Our data confirmed the essential role of the embedded conjugated system and suggest a reversible sulfa-protection of the Michael acceptor as a viable option. Structurally simplified achiral macrolactam 8 showed the best inhibitory activity against S. aureus L12 (MRSA) with MIC50 values of 0.39 μg mL-1, 8-fold lower than those of berkeleylactone A. These studies may be of value in the development of more advanced candidates for antibiotic applications.

Abstract
An isolated Ni(II)-nitrosyl complex supported by the bulky tridentate 1,4,7-triisopropyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane (iPr3TACN) ligand was obtained from the reaction of a Ni(II) dimethyl complex with NOPF6, suggesting the in situ formation of a Ni(I) species that reacts with the resulting NO product. Use of a π-acceptor ancillary isocyanide ligand led to the isolation and characterization of an uncommon 5-coordinate Ni(I) complex supported by the iPr3TACN ligand and tert-butylisocyanide.

Abstract
Dehalogenative deuteration reactions are generally performed through metal-mediated processes. This report demonstrates a mild protocol for hydrodehalogenation and dehalogenative deuteration of aryl/heteroaryl halides (39 examples) using a reduced odd alternant hydrocarbon phenalenyl under transition metal-free conditions and has been employed successfully for the incorporation of deuterium in various biologically active compounds. The combined approach of experimental and theoretical studies revealed a single electron transfer-based mechanism.

Abstract
Organometallic catalysts have played a key role in accomplishing numerous synthetically valuable organic transformations that are either otherwise not possible or inefficient. The use of precious, sparse and toxic 4d and 5d metals are an apparent downside of several such catalytic systems despite their immense success over the last several decades. The use of complexes containing Earth-abundant, inexpensive and less hazardous 3d metals, such as nickel, as catalysts for organic transformations has been an emerging field in recent times. In particular, the versatile nature of the corresponding pincer-metal complexes, which offers great control of their reactivity via countless variations, has garnered great interest among organometallic chemists who are looking for greener and cheaper alternatives. In this context, the current review attempts to provide a glimpse of recent developments in the chemistry of pincer-nickel catalyzed reactions. Notably, there have been examples of pincer-nickel catalyzed reactions involving two electron changes via purely organometallic mechanisms that are strikingly similar to those observed with heavier Pd and Pt analogues. On the other hand, there have been distinct differences where the pincer-nickel complexes catalyze single-electron radical reactions. The applicability of pincer-nickel complexes in catalyzing cross-coupling reactions, oxidation reactions, (de)hydrogenation reactions, dehydrogenative coupling, hydrosilylation, hydroboration, C-H activation and carbon dioxide functionalization has been reviewed here from synthesis and mechanistic points of view. The flurry of global pincer-nickel related activities offer promising avenues in catalyzing synthetically valuable organic transformations.

Abstract
The mechanism of the reactions between dppf-Ni0 complexes and alkyl halides has been investigated using kinetic and mechanistic experiments and DFT calculations. The active species is [Ni(κ2-dppf)(κ1-dppf)], which undergoes a halide abstraction reaction with alkyl halides and rapidly captures the alkyl radical that is formed. The rates of the reactions of [Ni(COD)(dppf)] with alkyl halides and the yields of prototypical nickel-catalyzed Kumada cross-coupling reactions of alkyl halides are shown to be significantly improved by the addition of free dppf ligand.

Abstract

The
synthesis of functionalized (benz)aldehydes, via a two-step,
one-pot procedure, is presented. The method employs a stable aluminum
hemiaminal as a tetrahedral intermediate, protecting a latent aldehyde,
making it suitable for subsequent cross-coupling with (strong nucleophilic)
organometallic reagents, leading to a variety of alkyl and aryl substituted
benzaldehydes. This very fast methodology also facilitates the effective
synthesis of a 11C radiolabeled aldehyde. Aluminum–ate
complexes enable transmetalation of alkyl fragments onto palladium
and subsequent cross-coupling.

Abstract
Ligand development plays an essential role in the advance of homogeneous catalysis. Tridentate, meridionally coordinating ligands, commonly termed pincer ligands, have been established as a privileged class of ligands in catalysis because they confer high stability while maintaining electronic tenability to the resulting metal complexes. Pincer ligands containing "soft" donors such as phosphines are typically used for late transition-metal ions, which are considered "soft" acids. Driven by our interest to develop base-metal catalysis and in view of the "hard" character of base-metal ions, our group explored a pincer ligand containing only "hard" nitrogen donors. A prototypical nickel complex of this ligand, "Nickamine", turned out to be an efficient catalyst in a wide range of organic reactions. Because of its propensity to mediate single-electron redox chemistry, Nickamine is particularly suited to catalyze cross-coupling of nonactivated alkyl halides through radical pathways. These coupling partners have been challenging substrates for traditional, palladium-based catalysts because of difficult oxidative addition and nonproductive β-H elimination. The high activity of Nickamine for cross-coupling leads to high chemoselectivity and functional group tolerance, even when reactive Grignard reagents are employed as nucleophiles. The scope of the catalysis is broad and encompasses sp3-sp3, sp3-sp2, and sp3-sp cross-coupling. The defined nature of Nickamine facilitated the mechanistic study of cross-coupling reactions. Experiments involving radical-probe substrates, presumed intermediates and dormant species, kinetics, and density functional theory computations revealed a bimetallic oxidative addition pathway. In this pathway, two Ni centers each provide one electron to support the two-electron activation of an alkyl halide substrate. The success of Nickamine motivated our systematic structure-activity studies aiming at improved activity in certain reactions through ligand modification. Indeed, better catalysts have been developed for cross-coupling of secondary alkyl halides as well as direct alkynylation of alkyl halides. The improvement is attributed to a more accessible Ni center in the new catalysts than in Nickamine. Surprisingly, the improvement could be obtained simply by replacing a dimethyl amino group in Nickamine with a pyrrolidino group. During the study of the catalytic cycle of Nickamine in cross-coupling reactions, we synthesized the corresponding Ni-H species. Consequently, we explored the catalytic application of Nickamine in Ni-H mediated reactions, such as hydrosilylation. To our delight, Nickamine is a chemoselective catalyst for hydrosilylation of alkenes while tolerating a reactive C=O group. An analogous Ni pincer complex was found to catalyze unusual hydrosilylation reactions using alkoxy hydrosilanes as surrogates of gaseous silanes.

Abstract
A direct reductive homo-coupling of alkyl tosylates has been developed by employing a combination of nickel and nucleophilic cobalt catalysts. A single-electron-transfer-type oxidative addition is a pivotal process in the well-established nickel-catalyzed coupling of alkyl halides. However, the method cannot be applied to the homo-coupling of ubiquitous alkyl tosylates due to the high-lying σ*(C-O) orbital of the tosylates. This paper describes a Ni/Co-catalyzed protocol for the activation of alkyl tosylates on the construction of alkyl dimers under mild conditions.

Abstract
Diphosphinodithio ligated complexes of nickel(0), nickel(i) and nickel(ii)-alkyl with a reactivity relevant to the C-C bond formation were described. Stoichiometric reactions of the nickel(0) complex, [(P2S2)Ni] ([1]0, P2S2 = (Ph2PC6H4CH2S)2(C2H4)), with alkyl halides (RX) such as C6H5CH2Br, C2H3CH2Br, C2H5I and (CH3)2CHI were investigated, from which the products were found to be highly dependent on the nature of RX used. Oxidative addition of C2H3CH2Br to [1]0 provides the stable Ni(ii)-alkyl complexes [1-allyl]+. The reaction of [1]0 with C6H5CH2Br proceeds through a radical pathway resulting in the formation of the nickel(i) complex [1]+ and an organic homo-coupled product 1,2-diphenylethane. Oxidative addition of C2H5I or (CH3)2CHI to [1]0 can be achieved but it competes with the halogen atom abstraction reaction as found for C6H5CH2Br. [1]0 was shown to be an active catalyst for the coupling reactions of primary halides and alkyl Grignard reagents.

Abstract
The terminal-selective, remote C(sp3 )-H alkylation of alkenes was achieved by a relay process combining NiH-catalyzed hydrometalation, chain walking, and alkylation. This method enables the construction of unfunctionalized C(sp3 )-C(sp3 ) bonds under mild conditions from two simple feedstock chemicals, namely olefins and alkyl halides. The practical value of this transformation is further demonstrated by the large-scale and regioconvergent alkylation of isomeric mixtures of olefins at low catalyst loadings.

Abstract
Reductive cross-coupling of aryl halides with ubiquitous alkyl tosylates was developed using a combination of nickel and vitamin B12 (VB12: cyanocobalamin) catalysts. The tosylate was activated by reduced VB12 to form alkyl cobalt(iii), which served as a good alkylating agent for aryl-nickel species, leading to C(sp3)-C(sp2) bond formation.

Abstract
We have performed a systematic study of the electron structure of a series of Ni(I) and Ni(II) iodo and methyl complexes with a variety of di- and tridentate nitrogen ligands to study the influence of these ligands in the structure of catalytically active complexes in cross-coupling reactions. Ni(II) compounds show the expected square-planar configuration typical of complexes of d8 metals, regardless of the kind of coordinating nitrogen atom (sp2 or sp3) found in ligands derived from either trialkylamines or pyridines. In contrast, Ni(I) complexes show different structures. Thus, the absence of orbitals capable of delocalizing the unpaired electron (such as in TMEDA and PMDTA derivatives) leads to nonplanar iodo or methyl tetracoordinate complexes. In contrast, the presence of ligands derived from pyridine allows delocalization of the unpaired electron on the ligand. This delocalization is especially effective for terpyridine species.
