Two nickel-added poly(polyoxometalate)s built of Keggin-type {Ni6PW9} and Anderson-type NiW6O24via WO4/Sb2O bridges and Ni-O-W linkages with efficient hydrogen evolution activity

Two Ni-added poly(polyoxometalate)s built of Keggin-type {Ni6PW9} and Anderson-type NiW6O24 units via WO4/Sb2O bridges and Ni-O-W linkages, Na4H8[Ni(enMe)2][(Sb2O)2(NiW6O24)-{Ni12O2(OH)4(enMe)4(H2O)3(WO4)2(B-α-PW9O34)2}2]·39H2O (1) and H9[Ni(en)2(H2O)][Ni0.5(en)2(H2O)][Ni-(enMe)2(H2O)][(Sb2O)2(NiW6O24){Ni12O2(OH)4(en)2(enMe)2(H2O)3(WO4)2}-{Ni12O2(OH)4(en)4(H2O)3(WO4)2}(B-α-PW9O34)4]·45H2O (2), have been hydrothermally synthesized and characterized, in which the {Ni12(WO4)2(PW9)2} subunit was obtained by the synergistic directing effect of 2 lacunary PW9O34 (PW9) fragments and further linked by a central Anderson-type (Sb2O)2(NiW6O24) bridge. Both compounds represent the first example of Ni-added polyoxometalates (POMs) simultaneously based on Keggin-type and Anderson-type POM components. Photocatalytic studies revealed that 2 can work as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst towards a light-driven H2 evolution reaction, achieving a hydrogen evolution rate of as high as 19 214 μmol g-1 h-1 (TON = 1500), which is superior to most of the reported POM-based heterogeneous catalysts.

High-Nuclear Co-Added Polyoxometalate-Based Chain: Electrocatalytic Oxygen Production

A high-nuclear Co-added polyoxometalate (CoAP) was synthesized via a hydrothermal reaction: H14.5K9Na7.5-{[Co8(μ2-OH)(μ3-OH)2(H2O)2(Co(H2O)GeW6O26)(B-α-GeW9O34)2][BO(OH)2][Co12(μ2-OH)(μ3-OH)5(H2O)3(Co(H2O)GeW6O26)(GeW6O26)(B-α-GeW9O34)]}·46H2O (1). The polyoxoanion of 1 contains a large Co20 cluster gathered by lacunary GeW6O26 and GeW9O34 subunits. 1 represents a one-dimensional (1D) chain formed by adjacent polyoxoanions coupling through a CoO6 double bridge, showing the first example of a high-nuclear CoAP-based inorganic chain. 1 served as an efficient electrocatalyst in oxygen evolution reactions (OERs).

Synthesis and Characterization of 6-Ti-Substituted Polyoxomolybdate with High Catalytic Activity for Sulfide Oxidation

A 6-Ti-substituted polyoxometalate, (NH4)5Cs7Na3H2[Cs@(Ti2GeMo10O39)3]·34H2O (1), was synthesized by reacting (NH4)6Mo7O24·4H2O, GeO2, and TiOSO4 through the conventional aqueous method. Polyanion 1a is composed of three {Ti2GeMo10} segments linked by Ti-O-Ti linkages and shows a trefoil-shaped structure. Furthermore, one Cs+ cation is encapsulated in the cavity of 1a. Notably, it possesses the highest number of Ti centers among the reported polyoxomolybdates. In addition, serving as a high-efficiency heterogeneous catalyst, 1 enables the conversion of methyl phenyl sulfide within 20 min, yielding 96.4% of the corresponding sulfoxide with good recyclability.

40Ni-Added Poly(polyoxometalate) Assembled by {Ni6GeW9} and {Ni8(GeW9)2} Units: Structure, Magnetic, and Heterogeneous Catalysis Properties

A novel 40Ni-added germanotungstate, Cs₈K₁₄Na₃H₃{[Ni₆(OH)₃(H₂O)₆(B-α-GeW₉O₃₄)]₂[Ni₈(μ₆-O)(μ₂-OH)₂ (μ₃-OH)₂(H₂O)B₂O₃(OH)₂(B-α-GeW₉O₃₄)₂]}₂·84H₂O (1), was made by the reaction of the trivacant [A-α-GeW₉O₃₄]^10- ({GeW₉}) precursor with Ni²⁺ cations and B₅O₈^-, and systematically investigated by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, and powder X-ray diffraction. Single crystal X-ray analysis indicates that the polyoxoanion of 1 is a novel octamer constructed by {Ni₆GeW₉} and {Ni₈(GeW₉)₂} structural building units via Ni-O═W linkages. The magnetic behavior shows the existence of overall ferromagnetic interactions among the Ni²⁺ centers in compound 1. Photocatalytic H₂ production studies have implied that 1 can work as a heterogeneous catalyst for hydrogen production with decent robustness and recyclability.

A Nanoenzyme Constructed from Manganese and Strandberg-Type Phosphomolybdate with Versatility in Antioxidant and Modulating Conformation of Aβ Protein Misfolding Aggregates In Vitro

Amyloid β-peptide (Aβ) misfolding aggregates with β-sheet structures and surplus reactive oxygen species (ROS) are both considered to be the culprit of neuronal toxicity in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Therefore, modulating the misfolding mode of Aβ and inhibiting ROS simultaneous has become an important method for anti-AD. Herein, a nanoscale manganese-substituted polyphosphomolybdate (H₂en)₃[Mn(H₂O)₄][Mn(H₂O)₃]₂[P₂Mo₅O₂₃]₂·14.5H₂O (abbreviated as MnPM) (en = ethanediamine) was designed and synthesized by single crystal to single crystal transformation method. MnPM can modulate the β-sheet rich conformation of Aβ aggregates, and thus reduce the formation of toxic species. Moreover, MnPM also possesses the ability to eliminate the free radicals produced by Cu²⁺-Aβ aggregates. It can inhibit the cytotoxicity of β-sheet-rich species and protect synapses of PC12 cells. MnPM combines the conformation modulating ability of Aβ and anti-oxidation ability, which makes a promising multi-funcational molecular with a composite mechanism for the new conceptual designing in treatment of such protein-misfolding diseases.

Heteroatom-Modulated Assembly of Hexalanthanoid-Containing Polyoxometalate-Based Coordination Networks

Two series of lanthanoid (Ln)-containing polyoxometalates (POMs) {[Ln₆(ampH)₄(H₂O)_24-n(ampH₂)_n(PW₁₁O₃₉)₂]·21H₂O (Ln = Tb, n = 0 (1), Ln = Er, n = 1 (2)) and K₂[Ln₆(ampH)₄(H₂O)₂₂(SiW₁₁O₃₉)₂]·23H₂O (Ln = Tb (3), Er (4)) (ampH₂ = (aminomethyl) phosphonic acid)} have been synthesized with tri-lacunary Keggin-type POMs containing different types of heteroatoms. Compounds 1 and 2 display neutral organic-inorganic hybrid POM molecules containing {Ln₆(ampH)₄} ({Ln₆}) cores sandwiched by two {PW₁₁O₃₉} units. By changing the heteroatoms from P^V to Si^IV, the extended 2D networks of 3 and 4 were successfully isolated where the adjacent {Ln₆} clusters were connected by {SiW₁₁O₃₉} moieties. Luminescence performances and magnetic properties of 1-4 have been systematically surveyed. The solid-state fluorescence spectra of 1-4 display characteristic emissions of Ln components resulting from the 4f-4f transitions, and energy transfer from the POM segments to Ln³⁺ centers in 1 and 3 has been observed based on the lifetime decay behaviors. Furthermore, all compounds can be utilized as electrocatalysts toward reduction of nitrite with high stability.

A {Co9}-Added Polyoxometalate for Efficient Visible-Light-Driven Hydrogen Evolution

A polyanion cluster H₆Na₈Cs₃[Co₉(μ₃-OH)₃(H₂O)₆(HPO₄)₂(B-α-PW₉O₃₄)₃]Cl·40H₂O (1) was made with the guidance of the lacunary directing strategy under hydrothermal conditions. Compound 1 was characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis, respectively. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses showed that 1 consists of three anions [B-α-PW₉O₃₄]^9- and a cyclic cationic [Co₉(μ₃-OH)₃(H₂O)₆]¹⁵⁺ and two anions HPO₄^2-. Variable-magnetic properties indicate antiferromagnetic interactions in 1. Visible-light-driven hydrogen evolution tests demonstrated that 1 was an efficient water reduction catalyst with an H₂ evolution rate of 1217.6 μmol h^-1 g^-1.

A Cyclen-Functionalized Cobalt-Substituted Sandwich-Type Tungstoarsenate with Versatility in Removal of Methylene Blue and Anti-ROS-Sensitive Tumor Cells

Oxidative degradation by using reactive oxygen species (ROS) is an effective method to treat pollutants. The synthesis of artificial oxidase for the degradation of dyes is a hot spot in molecular science. In this study, a nanoscale sandwich-type polyoxometalate (POM) on the basis of a tetra-nuclear cobalt cluster and trivacant B-α-Keggin-type tungstoarsenate {[Co(C₈H₂₀N₄)]₄}{Co₄(H₂O)₂[HAsW₉O₃₄]₂}∙4H₂O (abbreviated as CAW, C₈H₂₀N₄ = cyclen) has been synthesized and structurally examined by infrared (IR) spectrum, ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) spectrum, X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS), single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SXRD), and bond valence sum (Σs) calculation. According to the structural analysis, the principal element of the CAW is derived from modifying sandwich-type polyanion {Co₄(H₂O)₂ [HAsW₉O₃₄]₂}^8– with four [Co(Cyclen)]²⁺, in which 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (cyclen) is firstly applied to modify POM. It is also demonstrated that CAW is capable of efficiently catalyzing the production of ROS by the synergistic effects of POM fragments and Co–cyclen complexes. Moreover, CAW can interfere with the morphology and proliferation of sensitive cells by producing ROS and exhibits ability in specifically eliminating methylene blue (MB) dyes from the solution system by both adsorption and catalytic oxidation.

High-Nuclear Ni-Substituted Poly(polyoxometalate) Containing an Anderson-like {Cs7} Cluster

A novel high-nuclear Ni-substituted poly(polyoxometalate) [poly(POM)], [H₂N(CH₃)₂]₂Na₁₈Cs₂H₁₃[(Cs₇(H₂O)₆)@{(PO₄)-@(Ni₄(OH)₃(WO₄))₃@(B-α-PW₉O₃₄)₃}₂]·30H₂O (1), has been successfully developed and structurally characterized. The polyoxoanion of 1 can be viewed as a unique huge sandwich structure made of an unprecedented Cs₇(H₂O)₆ ({Cs₇}) cluster core encapsulated by two trimeric [(PO₄)@(Ni₄(OH)₃(WO₄))₃@(B-α-PW₉O₃₄)₃]^21- subunits, in which the {Cs₇} cluster presents an interesting Anderson-like arrangement and is the first example of a classical POM configuration based on the alkali metal cluster in the POM chemistry. The polyoxoanion can also be described as an unusual [(Cs₇(H₂O)₆)@{(PO₄)@(Ni₄(OH)₃(WO₄))₃}₂]¹⁹⁺ cluster packaged by six {PW₉} fragments. Furthermore, investigations on the Knoevenagel condensation reaction reveal that 1 has good catalytic activity for the condensation of various aldehydes and malononitrile into corresponding products with excellent yields.

Designed Syntheses of Three {Ni6PW9}-Based Polyoxometalates, from Isolated Cluster to Cluster-Organic Helical Chain

Three new hexa-Ni-substituted Keggin-type polyoxometalates (POMs), [Ni6(OH)3- (DACH)3(H2O)6(PW9O34)]·31H2O (1), [Ni(DACH)2][Ni6(OH)3(DACH)3(HMIP)2(H2O)2(PW9O34)]·56 H2O (2), and [Ni(DACH)2][Ni6(OH)3(DACH)2(AP)(H2O)5(PW9O34)]·2H2O (3) (DACH = 1,2-Diami- nocyclohexane, MIP = 5-Methylisophthalate, AP = Adipate) were successfully made in the presence of DACH under hydrothermal conditions. 1 is an isolated hexa-Ni-substituted Keggin unit decorated by DACH. In order to further construct POM cluster-organic frameworks (POMCOFs) on the basis of 1, by analyzing the steric hindrances and orientations of the POM units, the rigid HMIP and flexible AP ligands were successively incorporated, and another anionic monomeric POM 2 and the new 1D POM cluster organic chain (POMCOC) 3 were obtained. HMIP ligand still acts as a decorating group on the Ni6 core of 2 but results in the different spatial arrangement of the {Ni6PW9} units. AP ligands in 3 successfully bridge adjacent isolated POM cluster units to 1D POMCOC with left-hand helices. The AP in 3 is the longest aliphatic carboxylic acid ligand in POMs, and the 1D POM cluster-AP helical chain represents the first 1D POMCOC with a helical feature.

A Novel Tri-Coordination Zinc Complex Functionalized Silicotungstate with ROS Catalytic Ability and Anti-Tumor Cells Activity

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) can be used as an effective method to treat tumors. Artificial oxidase has received increasing attention as a catalyst for ROS generation in fields ranging from bioinorganic chemistry to pharmaceutical chemistry. In this study, an artificial oxidase based on a binuclear zinc complex and Keggin-type silicotungstate [Zn2(4,4′-bpy)(Phen)2][SiW12O40] (ZSW) (4,4′-bpy = 4,4′-bipyridine; Phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) was synthesized and structurally featured in terms of its X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS), bond valence sum (Σs) calculation, IR spectra, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SXRD). ZSW is an ionic compound in which the cation is a binuclear zinc complex [Zn2(4,4′-bpy)(Phen)2]4+ and the anion is a α-Keggin-type silicotungstate [SiW12O40]4– cluster. Notably, the Zn ions in the [Zn2(4,4′-bpy)(Phen)2] exist in tri-coordination, which was first obtained in polyoxometalate (POM) chemistry. It was also demonstrated that ZSW is capable of efficiently catalyzing the production of ROS, which, according to the computational calculations, may be due to the synergistic action of zinc complexes and POM building blocks. Furthermore, ZSW exhibited inhibition ability toward ROS-sensitive tumor cells, such as PC12 cells.

Chiral {Ni6PW9} Cluster-Organic Framework: Synthesis, Structure, and Properties

A chiral three-dimensional polyoxometalate cluster-organic framework (POMCOF) H₃[(btc)Ni₆(μ₃-OH)₃(H₂O)₅(B-α-PW₉O₃₄)]·17H₂O (1, btc = 1,2,4-benzenetricarboxylate) has been made under hydrothermal conditions in the absence of amine or chiral starting reagents. 1 shows high stability in CH₃CN/DMF (1:3), acidic, and basic solutions with the pH ranging from 2 to 12 for 5 days. The UV-vis reflectance spectra and Mott-Schottky measurements reveal that 1 could be a suitable catalyst for photocatalysis. Visible-light-driven H₂ evolution studies have demonstrated that 1 is an ecofriendly, efficient, and recyclable catalyst with a H₂ evolution rate of 1058.24 μmol h^-1g^-1. Nonlinear optical (NLO) measurement reveals that 1 exhibits a second-harmonic generation (SHG) response of about 1.4 times that of KH₂PO₄ (KDP), indicating that 1 is a potential NLO material as well.

Nuclearity enlargement from [PW9O34@Ag51] to [(PW9O34)2@Ag72] and 2D and 3D network formation driven by bipyridines

The structural transformations of metal nanoclusters are typically quite complex processes involving the formation and breakage of several bonds, and thus are challenging to study. Herein, we report a case where two lacunary Keggin polyoxometallate templated silver single-pods [PW9O34@Ag51] (SD/Ag51b) fuse to a double-pod [(PW9O34)2@Ag72] by reacting with 4,4’-bipyridine (bipy) or 1,4-bis(4-pyridinylmethyl)piperazine (pi-bipy). Their crystal structures reveal the formation of a 2D 44-sql layer (SD/Ag72a) with bipy and a 3D pcu framework (SD/Ag72c) with pi-bipy. The PW9O349− retains its structure during the cluster fusion and cluster-based network formation. Although the two processes, stripping of an Ag-ligands interface followed by fusion, and polymerization, are difficult to envisage, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry provides enough evidences for such a proposal to be made. Through this example, we expect the structural transformation to become a powerful method for synthesizing silver nanoclusters and their infinite networks, and to evolve from trial-and-error to rational.

{Ti6}/{Ti10} Wheel Cluster Substituted Silicotungstate Aggregates

Two novel Ti-oxo wheel cluster substituted silicotungstates (STs) [H₂N(CH₃)₂]₉H₉[Ti₆O₆(SiW₁₀O₃₇)₃]·11H₂O (1) and [H₂N(CH₃)₂]₁₆H₁₀[Ti₁₀O₁₁(SiW₁₀O₃₇)₂(SiW₉O₃₅)₂]·14H₂O (2) have been made by hydrothermal reactions. The polyoxoanion of 1 is a ring-shaped trimer where a Ti₆O₆ ({Ti₆}) wheel cluster is encapsulated by three divacant [SiW₁₀O₃₇]^10- (SiW₁₀O₃₇) fragments. However, 2 is built by two divacant SiW₁₀O₃₇ units and two rare trivacant [SiW₉O₃₅]^12- (SiW₉O₃₅) fragments and further installs an unprecedented Ti₁₀O₁₁ ({Ti₁₀}) double-wheel cluster. To the best of our knowledge, 2 is rare in POM chemistry. Studies on the catalytic oxidation properties reveal that 1 exhibits high catalytic activity toward the oxidation of various sulfides using H₂O₂ as an oxidant. Furthermore, 1 can be facilely recycled and reused for at least five cycles without obvious loss of catalytic activity.

A {Ti6W4}-Cluster-Substituted Polyoxotungstate: Synthesis, Structure, and Catalytic Oxidation Properties

A novel Ti-W-O-cluster-substituted tungstoantimonate (TA), [H₂N(CH₃)₂]₃Na₄H₉[{Ti₆W₄O₁₈(OH)(H₂O)₃}(B-α-SbW₉O₃₃)₃]·20H₂O (1), has been made by hydrothermal reactions of trivacant [B-α-SbW₉O₃₃]^9- units, Ti⁴⁺ cations, and WO₄^2- anions in the presence of [H₂N(CH₃)₂]·Cl and structurally characterized. Intriguingly, the polyoxoanion of 1 is constructed from three [B-α-SbW₉O₃₃]^9- units and a previously unobserved decanuclear heterometallic Ti-W-O cluster [Ti₆W₄O₁₈(OH)(H₂O)₃]¹¹⁺ ({Ti₆W₄}) that is comprised of an octahedral [Ti₆WO₆(H₂O)₃]¹⁸⁺ cluster and an edge-sharing [W₃O₁₂(OH)]^7- fragment via six W-O-Ti/W linkers. Furthermore, studies on the catalytic oxidation properties reveal that 1 possesses good catalytic activity toward the oxidation reactions of various sulfides and cyclooctene based on the environmentally friendly oxidant H₂O₂.

Two Ni-Substituted Trilacunary Keggin-Type Polyoxometalates: Syntheses, Crystal Structures, NLO Studies, and Magnetic Properties

Two Ni-substituted polyoxometalates (NiSPs), [Ni₆(Py)₆(H₂O)₅(μ₃-OH)₃(PW₉O₃₄)]₂·10H₂O (1), [Ni₇(Py)₆(Im)(H₂O)₅O(WO₄)(μ₃-OH)₃(H₂PW₉O₃₄)]·3H₂O (2) (Py = pyridine, Im = imidazole), were successfully hydrothermally synthesized. Compounds 1 and 2 have significantly different configurations by introducing different amounts of imidazole ligands. For compound 1, two malposed {Ni₆(Py)₆PW₉} units that are face to face are bridged by two Ni-O-W bonds to constitute an isolated dimeric structure. Differently, the {Ni₇(Py)₆(Im)PW₉}₂ dimer in compound 2 connects with four adjacent dimers by four {WO₄} groups in an interesting two-dimensional (2-D) arrangement. The magnetism of compounds 1 and 2 was studied, and magnetic test results demonstrated that both compounds have ferromagnetic interactions between the nickel centers. Meanwhile, the third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) measurements indicated that compound 1 can serve as potential nonlinear optical materials.

{Cu8} Cluster-Sandwiched Polyoxotungstates and Their Polymers: Syntheses, Structures, and Properties

Four inorganic-organic hybrid octa-Cu cluster sandwiched polyoxotungstates (POTs), [Cu₈(H₂O)₂(en)₄(B-α-H₂SiW₉O₃₄)₂] (1), [Cu₈(H₂O)₂(en)₄(B-α-H₂GeW₉O₃₄)₂] (2), K₂[Cu₈(en)₄(B-α-HSiW₉O₃₄)₂]·6H₂O (3), and K₂[Cu₈(en)₄(B-α-HGeW₉O₃₄)₂]·2H₂O (4) (en = ethylenediamine), were hydrothermally made and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, infrared spectra, powder X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis, respectively. Structure analysis reveals that the polyoxoanion of 1/2 is a discrete dimer built by two trivalent Keggin [B-α-XW₉O₃₄]^10- (X = Si/Ge) fragments and one octa-Cu cluster, whereas 3 and 4 display a two-dimensional network built by octa-Cu-sandwiched POT units via substitution of coordinated water on polyanions of 1 and 2 and further expand into a three-dimensional framework via K cation bridges. Ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectra reveal that 1-4 are potential semiconductor materials. Moreover, its visible light-driven catalytic H₂ evolution activity, electrochemical properties, catalysis for oxygenation reactions of thioethers, and magnetic behaviors have been investigated in detail.

A μ-AsO4-Bridging Hexadecanuclear Ni-Substituted Polyoxotungstate

A novel tetrahedral μ-AsO₄-bridging hexadecanuclear Ni-substituted silicotungstate (ST) Na₂₁H₁₀[(AsO₄){Ni₈(OH)₆(H₂O)₂(CO₃)₂(A-α-SiW₉O₃₄)₂}₂]·60H₂O (1) was made by the reactions of trivacant [A-α-SiW₉O₃₄]^10- ({SiW₉}) units with Ni²⁺ cations and Na₃AsO₄·12H₂O and characterized by IR spectrometry, elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD). 1 contains a novel polyoxoanion [(AsO₄){Ni₈(OH)₆(H₂O)₂(CO₃)₂(A-α-SiW₉O₃₄)₂}₂]^31- built by four trivacant Keggin [A-α-SiW₉O₃₄]^10- fragments linked through an unprecedented [(AsO₄){Ni₈(OH)₆(H₂O)₂(CO₃)₂}₂]⁹⁺ cluster, where the tetrahedral AsO₄ acts as an exclusively μ₂-bridging unit to link multiple Ni centers; such a connection mode appears for the first time in polyoxometalate chemistry. Furthermore, the electrochemical and catalytic oxidation properties of compound 1 have been investigated.

Pentadecanuclear Fe-Containing Polyoxometalate Catalyst for Visible-Light-Driven Generation of Hydrogen

The structurally new, carbon-free pentadecanuclear Fe-containing polyoxometalate, Na₂₁[NaFe₁₅(OH)₁₂(PO₄)₄(A-α-SiW₉O₃₄)₄]·85H₂O (Na₂₁-Fe₁₅P₄(SiW₉)₄), was synthesized using a facile one-pot, solution-based synthetic approach and systematically characterized by various spectroscopic techniques. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that the title complex is composed of two [Fe₄(A-α-SiW₉O₃₄)] fragments and two [Fe_3.5(A-α-SiW₉O₃₄)] fragments stabilized by four PO₄ linkers in a tetrameric style with idealized T_d point group symmetry. When coupling with (4,4'-ditert-butyl-2,2'-dipyridyl)-bis(coumarin)-iridium(III) hexafluorophosphate ([Ir(coumarin)₂(dtbbpy)][PF₆]) photosensitizer and triethanolamine (TEOA) sacrificial electron donor, polyoxoanion Fe₁₅P₄(SiW₉)₄ effectively catalyzed hydrogen production with a minimally optimized TON of 986, which represents, to our knowledge, one of the highest values among known Fe-substituted POM-catalyzed hydrogen production systems. Both a mercury-poisoning test and FT-IR characterizations proved the structural stability of Fe₁₅P₄(SiW₉)₄ catalyst under photocatalytic conditions. The photocatalytic mechanism of the present hydrogen-evolving system was investigated by time-solved luminescence and static emission quenching measurements.

A Giant 3d-4f Polyoxometalate Super-Tetrahedron with High Proton Conductivity

The assembly of gigantic heterometallic metal clusters remains a great challenge for synthetic chemistry. Herein, based on the slow release strategy of lanthanide ions and in situ formation of lacunary polyoxometalates, two giant 3d-4f polyoxometalate inorganic clusters [LaNi₁₂ W₃₅ Sb₃ P₃ O₁₃₉ (OH)₆ ]^23- (LaNi₁₂ ) and [La₁₀ Ni₄₈ W₁₄₀ Sb₁₆ P₁₂ O₅₆₈ (OH)₂₄ (H₂ O)₂₀ ]^86- (La₁₀ Ni₄₈ ) are obtained. The nanoscopic inorganic cluster La₁₀ Ni₄₈ possesses a super tetrahedron structure, which can be viewed as assembly from four LaNi₁₂ molecules encapsulating a central [La₆ (SbO₃ )₄ (H₂ O)₂₀ ]⁶⁺ octahedron core. This giant aesthetic La₁₀ Ni₄₈ tetrahedron containing 214 metal ions is the largest 3d-4f cluster reported thus far in polyoxometalate system. More interestingly, the LaNi₁₂ and La₁₀ Ni₄₈ display high stability in solution and La₁₀ Ni₄₈ displays excellent proton conductivity.

An Unprecedented Bird Nest Molybdenum(V) Cobalto-Phosphate Nanosized Wheel Constructed from the [H55 (Mo24 O48 )(Co4 O)2 Co16 (PO4 )42 (py)6 (EtOH)2 (H2 O)11 ]3- Anion

An unprecedented bird-nest high-nuclear molybdenum(V) cobalto-phosphate nanosized wheel modified by imidazole (im) and pyridine (py), {[H₅₅ (Mo₂₄ O₄₈ )(Co₄ O)₂ Co₁₆ (PO₄ )₄₂ (py)₆ (EtOH)₂ (H₂ O)₁₁ ]- @[(Him)₂ (Hpy)]}(N-Et-py)(H₂ PO₄ )(py)₇ (EtOH)⋅12 H₂ O (1), has been successfully synthesized by self-assembly. The anionic huge wheel consists of two rare {Co₄ O} squares, four {Co₄ } tetramers, four {Mo₄ } tetramers and four {Mo₂ } dimers, linked by bridging oxygen atoms and [PO₄ ] groups and encloses two imidazolium cations and a protonated pyridium for charge balance. Surprisingly, 1 represents the first twisted wheel-shaped cluster with a record high-nuclear molybdenum(V) cobalto-phosphate. The delocalized electron effects of the cluster are enhanced with the help of coordinated py ligands, which endows 1 with an excellent third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) response. Additionally, 1 also shows a better photocatalytic water oxidation activity than Co(NO₃ )₂ with the O₂ production of 205 μmol during 6 h in the absence of the [Ru(bpy)₃ ]²⁺ photosensitizer.

Two novel nickel cluster substituted polyoxometalates: syntheses, structures and their photocatalytic activities, magnetic behaviors, and proton conduction properties

A Ni₁₂-substituted POM and a Ni₆-substituted POM have been synthesized and characterized. The compounds show a moderate catalytic activity in visible-light-driven CO₂ reduction reactions, and can serve as potential proton conduction materials.

Three ring-shaped Zr(iv)-substituted silicotungstates: syntheses, structures and their properties

Three Zr(iv)-substituted polyoxometalate nanoclusters, H₁₆(H₂dap)₄[{Zr₂(OH)₂(α-SiW₁₀O₃₈)}₂{Zr₂(OH)₂(β-SiW₁₀O₃₈)}₂]·8H₂O (1, dap = 1,3-diaminopropane), H₁₇Na₉[(Zr₂(OH)₂)₂(Zr₂BO(OH)₄)₂(β-SiW₁₀O₃₈)₄]·50H₂O (2) and H₂₀Na₈[(Zr₂BO(OH)₄)₂(Zr₂B₂O₂(OH)₅)₂(β-SiW₁₀O₃₈)₄]·40H₂O (3), were made by a hydrothermal reaction of trivacant [A-α-SiW₉O₃₄]^10-, Zr⁴⁺ ions, and H₃BO₃ under different alkaline conditions. Single-crystal X-ray structure analysis revealed that they are ring-shaped polyoxotungstate aggregates built by Zr₂(OH)₂ ({Zr₂}) clusters and two types of dilacunary α-/β-SiW₁₀O₃₈ ({α-/β-SiW₁₀}) fragments for 1, {Zr₂}, {β-SiW₁₀}, and Zr₂BO(OH)₄ ({Zr₂B}) clusters for 2, and {β-SiW₁₀}, {Zr₂B}, and Zr₂B₂O₂(OH)₅ ({Zr₂B₂}) clusters for 3, respectively, showing that the Zr-B-O clusters, {Zr₂B} and {Zr₂B₂}, have been introduced to the lacunary sites of polyoxometalates for the first time. The electrochemistry and electrocatalytic properties of 2 were studied, and it exhibited effective catalytic activities for the reduction of H₂O₂, NO₂^-, and BrO₃^-. Moreover, the catalysis of 2 for the oxidation reactions of various thioethers was investigated, and it was found that 2 possessed high conversion and remarkable selectivity.

Three Zr(IV)-Substituted Polyoxotungstate Aggregates: Structural Transformation from Tungstoantimonate to Tungstophosphate Induced by pH

Three novel Zr-substituted polyoxotungstate aggregates [H₂N(CH₃)₂]₇NaH₂[Zr₂Sb₂O₃(A-α-PW₉O₃₄)₂]·16H₂O (1), [H₂N(CH₃)₂]₆H₁₂[ZrSb₄(OH)O₂(A-α-PW₈O₃₂)(A-α-PW₉O₃₄)]₂·33H₂O (2), and [H₂N(CH₃)₂]₄Na_11.5H_4.5[Zr₄W₈Sb₄P₅O₄₉(OH)₅(B-α-SbW₉O₃₃)₂]·53H₂O (3) have been made in hydrothermal reactions of the [B-α-SbW₉O₃₃]^9- precursor with Zr⁴⁺ cations and PO₄^3- anions in the presence of dimethylamine hydrochloride and sodium acetate buffer (pH = 4.8) and structurally characterized. Different pH values induce structural transformation from tungstoantimonate (TA) to tungstophosphate (TP). 1 is a di-Zr-substituted sandwich-type TP, the tetranuclear heterometallic [Zr₂Sb₂O₃]⁸⁺ entity sandwiched by two [A-α-PW₉O₃₄]^9- moieties. 2 is a double sandwich-type structure, which can be perceived as two equivalent sandwiched [Sb₃(PW₈O₃₂)(PW₉O₃₄)]^11- further sandwiching one [Sb₂Zr₂(OH)₂O₄]⁴⁺ core to form a novel large-size sandwich-type architecture. Different from 1 and 2, 3 is a tetra-Zr-substituted sandwiched configuration, in which two [B-α-SbW₉O₃₃]^9- fragments sandwich a unique 21-core Sb-P-W-Zr oxo cluster ({Zr₄W₈Sb₄P₅}). Furthermore, the catalytic oxidation of aromatic thioethers by 3 as the heterogeneous catalyst has been investigated, showing high conversion and remarkable selectivity as well as excellent recyclability.

Stabilizing γ-Alkyltin-Oxo Keggin Ions by Borate Functionalization

We report a hierarchical self-assembly engineering of tin-oxo clusters from nanosized hydrophobic clusters to a single-layer film of assembled clusters. These clusters are derivatives of the previously reported Na-centered butyltin Keggin ions, but they are bicapped with butyltin and with borate ligands. The formulas γ-[( n-BuSn)₁₄(OCH₃)₁₀(OH)₃O₉(NaO₄)(HBO₃)₂] and γ-[( n-BuSn)₁₄(OCH₃)₁₀(OH)₃O₉(NaO₄)(PhBO₂)₂] were determined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction and bulk solution characterization including small-angle X-ray scattering, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and multinuclear and multidimensional NMR (¹¹⁹Sn, ¹³C, and ¹H). Solution characterization confirms that borate functionalization inhibits the solution-phase β-γ Keggin isomer interconversion that was recognized prior for uncapped butyltin clusters, and in this case, the γ isomer is favored. The assembly of the γ-NaSn₁₄BO₃ clusters into a homogeneous Langmuir-Blodgett monolayer is the first step toward creating nanopatterned films for microelectronic devices.

Ligand-Controlled Assembly of Heteropolyoxomolybdates from Plenary Keggin Germanomolybdates and Cu-Ln Heterometallic Units

By virtue of combining an in-situ assembly process with a stepwise synthesis in conventional aqueous solution, two series of unique organic-inorganic hybrid heteropolyoxomolybdates were constructed from plenary Keggin germanomolybdates and Cu-Ln heterometallic units and fully characterized: [H₂ INA]₂ H₈ [LnCu(INA)₄ (H₂ O)₆ ]₂ [α-GeMo₁₂ O₄₀ ]₃ ⋅52 H₂ O (Ln=La³⁺ (1), Ce³⁺ (2), Pr³⁺ (3), Nd³⁺ (4), Sm³⁺ (5), Eu³⁺ (6); HINA=isonicotinic acid) and (NH₄ )[Cu(PA)₂ ][Cu(PA)₂ Ln(H₂ O)₈ ][α-GeMo₁₂ O₄₀ ]⋅10 H₂ O (Ln=Nd³⁺ (7), Sm³⁺ (8), Eu³⁺ (9); HPA=picolinic acid). The most remarkable structural characteristic of compounds 1-6 was that their molecular units were defined by three discrete plenary Keggin [α-GeMo₁₂ O₄₀ ]^4- polyoxoanions and two organic-inorganic hybrid heterometallic [LnCu(INA)₄ (H₂ O)₆ ]⁺ moieties, whereas compounds 7-9 exhibited a nice-looking 1D chain-like structure that was built from plenary [α-GeMo₁₂ O₄₀ ]^4- polyoxoanions, pendent [Cu(PA)₂ ] complexes, and bridging {[Cu(PA)₂ ][Ln(H₂ O)₈ ]}³⁺ heterometallic groups. Notably, two different pyridine carboxylic acid ligands led to the discrepancy between the two structure types. To the best of our knowledge, compounds 1-9 constitute the first examples of plenary Keggin heterometallic germanomolybdates that include Cu-Ln-organic subunits. Further studies revealed that compounds 3 and 8 exhibited fast adsorption capacity for cationic dyes methylene blue (MB) and rhodamine B (RhB) in water. Moreover, compounds 3 and 8 could quickly and selectively adsorb MB from a mixture of MB/methyl orange (MO) or MB/azophloxine (Apo).

Induced Aggregation and Synergistic Coordination Strategy in Cluster Organic Architectures

Developments in strategies for the synthesis of oxo-hydroxo lanthanide (Ln) clusters during the past few decades have resulted in abundant relevant crystalline materials that exhibit attractive structures and interesting properties. The combination of these oxo-hydroxo Ln clusters and organic ligands has led to the formation of new extended arrays of Ln cluster organic frameworks (LnCOFs). In contrast to metal-organic frameworks, the incorporation of particular characteristics of clusters provides the opportunity to develop performances not available in single-metal compounds. Even with steady advances in oxo-hydroxo Ln clusters, progress in LnCOFs is less developed. To obtain LnCOFs, one premise is to induce the oxophilic Ln ions undergoing aggregation. Meanwhile, the organic ligands should have extra coordination sites for further expansion. Multidentate organic ligands like pyrazinecarboxylic acid and pyridinecarboxylic acid containing O and N donors will meet these two requirements. Their carboxyl groups will induce the aggregation of Ln ions, while the N donors can serve as potential extension sites. To make more open frameworks or if the oxo-hydroxo Ln clusters fail to be congregated or connected, then a second ligand is necessary. The introduction of the suitable second ligand may occupy a partial coordination sphere of Ln ions and ultimately benefit the connection process. In this Account, we introduce the origin and evolution of the induced aggregation and synergistic coordination strategy. According to the attributes of the organic ligands in the documented LnCOFs, we classify them into linear and nonlinear groups in the second and third parts. From the aspect of ligand-induced aggregation, isonicotinic acid (HIN) and lengthened 4-(4-pyridyl)benzoic acid (HPBA) ligands as well as their nonlinear analogues are settled as typical models. From the aspect of synergistic coordination, chelating ligands like 1,2-benzenedicarboxylic acid (1,2-H₂BDC) and acetic acid (HOAc) play significant roles. Moreover, three types of synergistic coordination are discussed in detail: synergistic coordination between two types of organic ligands, synergistic coordination between organic and inorganic ligands, and simultaneous synergistic coordination of aforementioned two types. From the aspect of LnCOF products, in addition to traditional pure LnCOFs, new types of heterometallic frameworks containing two types of cluster building units have been developed. Although this Account focuses on the nuclearity and coordination aspects of LnCOFs, we anticipate that it will stimulate more efforts in the further study of their properties beyond the exploratory synthesis. More importantly, synergistic coordination may be applied to other systems and inspire crystal design and targeted assembly of new functional materials.
