Abstract
The Lewis acidity of tris(ortho-carboranyl)borane has been slightly increased by mimicking the structural evolution from triarylborane to 9-aryl-9-borafluorene. The o-carborane-based analogue (C2B10H10)2B(C2B10H11), obtained via salt elimination between LiC2B10H11 and (C2B10H10)2BBr, has been fully characterized. Gutmann-Beckett and computational fluoride/hydride ion affinity (FIA/HIA) studies have confirmed the increase in Lewis acidity, which is attributable to structural constraint imposed by the CC-coupling between two carboranyl groups. Selective complexation of (C2B10H10)2B(C2B10H11) with Bestmann ylides R3PCCO (R = Ph, Cy) has been achieved, enabling further conversion into the zwitterionic phospholium salt through NHC-catalyzed proton transfer.

Abstract
Although the activation of elemental sulfur by main group compounds is well-documented in the literature, the products of such reactions are often heterocyclic in nature. However, the isolation and characterization of sulfur catenates (i.e., acyclic sulfur chains) is significantly less common. In this study, we report the activation of elemental sulfur by the 9-CAAC-9-borafluorene radical (1) and anion (2) (CAAC = (2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-4,4-diethyl-2,2-dimethyl-pyrrolidin-5-ylidene) to form boron-sulfur catenates (3-6). From the isolation of the octasulfide-bridged compound 3, a sulfur extrusion reaction using 1,3,4,5-tetramethylimidazol-2-ylidene (IMe4) was used to decrease the sulfide chain length from eight to seven (4). Bonding analysis of compounds 3-6 was performed using density functional theory, which elucidated the nature of the sulfur-sulfur bonding observed within these compounds. We also report the synthesis of a series of borafluorene-chalcogenide species (7-9), via diphenyl dichalcogenide activation, which portray characteristics described by an internal heavy atom effect. Compounds 7-9 each exhibit blue fluorescence, with the lowest energy emissive process (S2 → S0) at 436 nm (7 and 8) and 431 nm (9). The S1 → S0 emission is not observed experimentally due to a Laporte forbidden transition. Density functional theory was employed to investigate the frontier molecular orbitals and absorption and emission profiles of compounds 7-9.

Abstract
The reaction of benzoborirene with one equivalent of isocyanides leads to benzene-fused boretes bearing one imine function, while the reaction with two equivalents of isocyanide affords 2,3-dihydro-2,3-diiminoboroles with perfect regioselectivity. The isocyanide double insertion products represent a novel type of 1,2-diimine with a benzoborole backbone. The reduction chemistry of the benzoborole-supported 1,2-diimine was investigated. Single- and two-electron reduction allow for the isolation and full characterization of a radical anion and a dianion, respectively. In stark contrast to the ordinary boroles, which should turn aromatic by accepting two electrons, the antiaromatic character of the benzoborole backbone is highlighted upon reduction, thus presenting a rare example of antiaromatic borole dianion. Detailed quantum chemical calculations provide a rationale for the observed regioselectivity and the electronic structure of the reduced borole diimine species.

Abstract
Boroles with a fluoromesityl group on the B atom have greatly improved air stability compared to their mesityl analogues.
The electron-deficient pentaarylborole 1-(2′,4′,6′-tris(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)-2,3,4,5-tetraphenylborole (1) has been synthesised with the long-term aim of developing borole-based optoelectronic materials. The bulky 2,4,6-tris(trifluoromethyl)phenyl (FMes) group on the boron atom of 1 significantly improves (>600 times) its air stability relative to its mesityl analogue. Moreover, 1 shows good thermal stability without undergoing the dimerisation or isomerisation reactions reported for some other boroles. A triarylborole analogue (2), belonging to a new class of borole with the 3- and 4-positions of the BC4 ring linked by a –(CH2)3– group, has also been synthesised to elucidate the influence of carbon-bonded substituents on the stability of boroles. Both boroles were prepared through the reaction of Li[FMesBF3] and divinyldilithium reagents, a new and general method for borole syntheses. Compound 2 was found to isomerise through a [1,3]-H shift and double-bond rearrangement to an s-trans-butadienylborane species under highly basic (NaOH) conditions. The increased steric crowding at the boron centre through incorporation of the FMes group does not preclude binding of Lewis bases to either 1 or 2, as demonstrated by their fully reversible binding of pyridine. Interestingly, 1 exhibits a blue-shifted absorption spectrum, as compared with its mesityl analogue, a result contrary to previous understanding of the influence of substituent electronics on the absorption spectra of boroles. Most importantly, these boroles exhibit much greater air-stability than previously reported analogues without sacrificing the strong electron-accepting ability that makes boroles so attractive; indeed, 1 and 2 have very low reduction potentials of –1.52 and –1.69 eV vs. Fc/Fc+, respectively.

Abstract
A rational approach towards the borylative ring-opening of vinylepoxides and vinylaziridines, by the in situ formed MeO(-)→bis(pinacolato)diboron adduct, has been developed. The enhanced nucleophilic character of the Bpin (sp(2)) moiety from the reagent favours the SN2' conjugated B addition with the concomitant opening of the epoxide and aziridine rings. The reaction proceeds with total chemoselectivity towards the polyfunctionalised (-OH or -NHTs) allyl boronate. Theoretical calculations have determined the transition states that come from the reaction of the vinylic substrates with the activated MeO(-)→bis(pinacolato)diboron adduct, and a plausible mechanism for the organocatalytic borylative ring opening reaction has been suggested.

Abstract
Despite the synthesis of a boryl anion by Yamashita et al. in 2006, compounds that show boron-centered nucleophilicity are still rare and sought-after synthetic goals. A number of such boryl anions have since been prepared, two of which were reported to react with methyl iodide in apparent nucleophilic substitution reactions. One of these, a borolyl anion based on the borole framework, has now been found to display single-electron-transfer (SET) reactivity in its reaction with triorganotetrel halides, which was confirmed by the isolation of the first neutral borole-based radical. The radical was characterized by elemental analysis, single-crystal X-ray crystallography, and EPR spectroscopy, and has implications for the understanding of boron-based nucleophilic behavior and the emergent role of boron radicals in synthesis. This radical reactivity was also exploited in the synthesis of compounds with rare B-Sn and B-Pb bonds, the latter of which was the first isolated and structurally characterized compound with a "noncluster" B-Pb bond.

Abstract
Most trivalent boron reagents are electrophiles owing to the vacancy for two electrons to fill the outer orbital of boron; however, interestingly, trivalent boron compounds can change their electrophilic character to a nucleophilic character by only changing the nature of the substituents on the boron atoms. With the help of computational tools, we have analyzed the structural- and electronic properties of boryl fragments that were either bonded to main-group metals or coordinated to transition-metals/rare-earth-metals and we have designed a map that might help to identify certain trends. This trend map will be useful for selecting an appropriate trivalent boron compound, depending on the sought reactivity.

As indicated by cyclic and square-wave voltammetry, [6](2+) and [9](2+) can be (irreversibly) reduced by one electron. The initially formed radicals [6](.+) and [9](.+) undergo further reactions, which were probed by EPR spectroscopy and density functional calculations. The final products of the two-electron reduction are the two carbenes. Upon irradiation with UV light both [6](2+) and [9](2+) emit at room temperature in solution but with dramatically different characteristics. The different fluorescence behavior is analyzed by emission spectroscopy and interpreted by using time-dependent density functional calculations as largely due to different excited-state dynamics of [6](2+) and [9](2+) . The geometries of both radicals [6](.+) and [9](.+) and excited states {[6](2+) }* and {[9](2+) }* are substantially different from those of the parent ground-state molecules.

Abstract
The chemistry of organoboron compounds has been primarily dominated by their use as powerful reagents in synthetic organic chemistry. Recently, the incorporation of boron as part of a functional target structure has emerged as a useful way to generate diversity in organic compounds. A commonly applied strategy is the replacement of a CC unit with its isoelectronic BN unit. In particular, the BN/CC isosterism of the ubiquitous arene motif has undergone a renaissance in the past decade. The parent molecule of the 1,2-dihydro-1,2-azaborine family has now been isolated. New mono- and polycyclic B,N heterocycles have been synthesized for potential use in biomedical and materials science applications. This review is a tribute to Dewar's first synthesis of a monocyclic 1,2-dihydro-1,2-azaborine 50 years ago and discusses recent advances in the synthesis and characterization of heterocycles that contain carbon, boron, and nitrogen.

Abstract
Boranes are widely used Lewis acids and N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) are popular Lewis bases, so it is remarkable how little was known about their derived complexes until recently. NHC-boranes are typically readily accessible and many are so stable that they can be treated like organic compounds rather than complexes. They do not exhibit "borane chemistry", but instead are proving to have a rich chemistry of their own as reactants, as reagents, as initiators, and as catalysts. They have significant potential for use in organic synthesis and in polymer chemistry. They can be used to easily make unusual complexes with a broad spectrum of functional groups not usually seen in organoboron chemistry. Many of their reactions occur through new classes of reactive intermediates including borenium cations, boryl radicals, and even boryl anions. This Review provides comprehensive coverage of the synthesis, characterization, and reactions of NHC-boranes.
