Synthesis and Reactivity of a Dialane-Bridged Diradical

Radicals of the lightest group 13 element, boron, are well established and observed in numerous forms. In contrast to boron, radical chemistry involving the heavier group 13 elements (aluminum, gallium, indium, and thallium) remains largely underexplored, primarily attributed to the formidable synthetic challenges associated with these elements. Herein, we report the synthesis and isolation of planar and twisted conformers of a doubly CAAC (cyclic alkyl(amino)carbene)-radical-substituted dialane. Extensive characterization through spectroscopic analyses and X-ray crystallography confirms their identity, while quantum chemical calculations support their open-shell nature and provide further insights into their electronic structures. The dialane-connected diradicals exhibit high susceptibility to oxidation, as evidenced by electrochemical measurements and reactions with o-chloranil and a variety of organic azides. This study opens a previously uncharted class of dialuminum systems to study, broadening the scope of diradical chemistry and its potential applications.

Optically induced charge-transfer in donor-acceptor-substituted p- and m- C2B10H12 carboranes

Icosahedral carboranes, C2B10H12, have long been considered to be aromatic but the extent of conjugation between these clusters and their substituents is still being debated. m- and p-Carboranes are compared with m- and p-phenylenes as conjugated bridges in optical functional chromophores with a donor and an acceptor as substituents here. The absorption and fluorescence data for both carboranes from experimental techniques (including femtosecond transient absorption, time-resolved fluorescence and broadband fluorescence upconversion) show that the absorption and emission processes involve strong intramolecular charge transfer between the donor and acceptor substituents via the carborane cluster. From quantum chemical calculations on these carborane systems, the charge transfer process depends on the relative torsional angles of the donor and acceptor groups where an overlap between the two frontier orbitals exists in the bridging carborane cluster.

Species-differences in the in vitro biotransformation of trifluoroethene (HFO-1123)

1,1,2-Trifluoroethene (HFO-1123) is anticipated for use as a refrigerant with low global warming potential. Inhalation studies on HFO-1123 in rats indicated a low potential for toxicity (NOAELs ≥ 20,000 ppm). In contrast, single inhalation exposure of Goettingen® minipigs (≥ 500 ppm) and New Zealand white rabbits (≥ 1250 ppm) resulted in severe toxicity. It has been suggested that these pronounced species-differences in toxicity may be attributable to species-differences in biotransformation of HFO-1123 via the mercapturic acid pathway. Therefore, the overall objective of this study was to evaluate species-differences in glutathione (GSH) dependent in vitro metabolism of HFO-1123 in susceptible versus less susceptible species and humans as a basis for human risk assessment. Biotransformation of HFO-1123 to S-(1,1,2-trifluoroethyl)-L-glutathione (1123-GSH) and subsequent cysteine S-conjugate β-lyase-mediated cleavage of the corresponding cysteine conjugate (1123-CYS) was monitored in hepatic and renal subcellular fractions of mice, rats, minipigs, rabbits, and humans. While 1123-GSH formation occurred at higher rates in rat and rabbit liver S9 compared to minipig and human S9, increased β-lyase cleavage of 1123-CYS was observed in minipig kidney cytosol as compared to cytosolic fractions of other species. Increased β-lyase activity in minipig cytosol was accompanied by time-dependent formation of monofluoroacetic acid (MFA), a highly toxic compound that interferes with cellular energy production via inhibition of aconitase. Consistent with the significantly lower β-lyase activity in human cytosols, the intensity of the MFA signal in human cytosols was only a fraction of the signal obtained in minipig subcellular fractions. Even though the inconsistencies between GSH and β-lyase-dependent metabolism do not allow to draw a firm conclusion on the overall contribution of the mercapturic acid pathway to HFO-1123 biotransformation and toxicity in vivo, the β-lyase data suggest that humans may be less susceptible to HFO-1123 toxicity compared to minipigs.

Synthesis of Partially Fluorinated Alkyl Triflates by Electrochemical Fluorination (Simons Process)

A scalable straightforward synthesis of monofluoro- and difluoromethyl triflate CF3 SO2 OCH2 F (MH2F ) and CF3 SO2 OCHF2 (MHF2 ) through electrochemical fluorination (ECF, Simons process) of methyl triflate MH3 in anhydrous hydrogen fluoride at nickel anodes is presented. The ECF method is also feasible for the preparation of the deuterated analogues CF3 SO2 OCD2 F (MD2F ) and CF3 SO2 OCDF2 (MD2F ). Surprisingly, no H/D exchange occurs during ECF of CF3 SO2 OCD3 (MD3 ); this provides further evidence for a NiF3 /NiF4 -mediated ECF mechanism. The ECF of selected partially fluorinated ethyl triflates is described, and electrochemical fluorination of CF3 SO2 OCH2 CF3 (EH2F3 ) leads to the until now unknown chiral CF3 SO2 OCHFCF3 (EHFF3 ). The analogous fluoromethyl and fluoroethyl nonaflates are also accessible by ECF. This study contains detailed spectroscopic, structural, and thermal data on (fluoro)methyl and fluoro(ethyl) triflates.

Boron Insertion into the N≡N Bond of a Tungsten Dinitrogen Complex

The 1,3-addition of 1,2-diaryl-1,2-dibromodiboranes (B2Br2Ar2) to trans-[W(N2)2(dppe)2] (dppe = κ2-(Ph2PCH2)2), which is accompanied by a Br-Ar substituent exchange between the two boron atoms, is followed by a spontaneous rearrangement of the resulting tungsten diboranyldiazenido complex to a 2-aza-1,3-diboraallenylimido complex displaying a linear, cumulenic B=N=B moiety. This rearrangement involves the splitting of both the B-B and N=N bonds of the N2B2 ligand, formal insertion of a BAr boranediyl moiety into the N=N bond, and coordination of the remaining BArBr boryl moiety to the terminal nitrogen atom. Density functional theory calculations show that the reaction proceeds via a cyclic NB2 intermediate, followed by dissociation into a tungsten nitrido complex and a linear boryliminoborane, which recombine by adduct formation between the nitrido ligand and the electron-deficient iminoborane boron atom. The linear B=N=B moiety also undergoes facile 1,2-addition of Brønsted acids (HY = HOPh, HSPh, and H2NPh) with concomitant Y-Br substituent exchange at the terminal boron atom, yielding cationic (borylamino)borylimido tungsten complexes.

Alkylcyanoborate Anions: Building Blocks for Fluorine-Free Low-Viscosity, Electrochemically and Thermally Stable Ionic Liquids

A set of mixed-substituted potassium alkylcyano- and alkylcyanofluoroborates has been synthesized using easily accessible starting compounds and characterized by elemental analysis, NMR and vibrational spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. In addition, single-crystal structures of salts of the cyanoborate anions have been derived from X-ray diffraction experiments. The 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium room temperature ionic liquids ([EMIm]+ -RTILs) with the new borate anions have been synthesized and their physicochemical properties, that is, high thermal and electrochemical stability, low viscosity, and high conductivity, have been compared to the properties of related [EMIm]+ -RTILs. The influence of the different alkyl substituents at boron has been assessed. The exemplary study on the properties with the [EMIm]+ -ILs with the mixed water stable alkylcyanoborate anions points towards the potential of these fluorine-free borate anions, in general.

Solution and solid-state studies of hydrogen and halogen bonding with N-heterocyclic carbene supported nickel(II) fluoride complexes

Nickel fluoride complexes of the type [Ni(F)(L)2(ArF)] (L = phosphine, ArF = fluorinated arene) are well-known to form strong halogen and hydrogen bonds in solution and in the solid state. A comprehensive study of such non-covalent interactions using bis(carbene) complexes as acceptors and suitable halogen and hydrogen bond donors is presented. In solution, the complex [Ni(F)(iPr2Im)2(C6F5)] forms halogen and hydrogen bonds with iodopentafluorobenzene and indole, respectively, which have formation constants (K300) an order of magnitude greater than those of structurally related phosphine supported nickel fluorides. Co-crystallisation of this complex and its backbone-methylated analogue [Ni(F)(iPr2Me2Im)2(C6F5)] with 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene produces halogen bonding adducts which were characterised by X-ray analysis and 19F MAS solid state NMR analysis. Differences in the chemical shifts between the nickel fluoride and its halogen bonding adduct are well in line with data that were obtained from titration studies in solution.

Structure and Electronics of a Series of CAAC-Stabilized Diboron-Doped Acenes from 1,4-Diboranaphthalene to 6,13-Diborapentacene

This combined experimental and theoretical study examines the influence of acene elongation, boron atom position, and acene substitution pattern on the structure and electronics of cyclic alkyl(amino)carbene (CAAC)-stabilized diboraacenes and presents the first syntheses of neutral diboranaphthalene (DBN) and diborapentacene (DBP). Whereas 2,3-diethyl-substituted 1,4-(CAAC)₂-^Et2DBN is isolated as a mixture of a planar (structurally characterized) NMR-active conformer and a presumably bent EPR-active conformer, 6,13-(CAAC)₂-DBP resembles 9,10-(CAAC)₂-DBA (DBA = diboraanthracene), with a highly puckered 6,13-DBP core and a typical biradical EPR signal. Both species are easily reduced to their puckered dianions. DFT calculations confirm that 6,13-(CAAC)₂-DBP is only stable in its bent conformation, whereas 1,4-(CAAC)₂-^Et2DBN exists as both flat closed-shell and bent open-shell biradical conformers, which interchange by thermally activated ethyl and CAAC rotation/diboraacene bending processes. An in-depth computational study of the series of unsubstituted, CAAC-stabilized, symmetrically diboron-doped acenes from 1,4-(CAAC)₂-DBN to 6,13-(CAAC)₂-DBP was carried out. The results show interesting trends dependent on the position of the boron atoms within the acene framework as well as on the relative orientation of the CAAC ligands, which enable fine-tuning of the electronic and structural features.

Amber Light Control of Peptide Secondary Structure by a Perfluoroaromatic Azobenzene Photoswitch

The incorporation of photoswitches into the molecular structure of peptides and proteins enables their dynamic photocontrol in complex biological systems. Here, a perfluorinated azobenzene derivative triggered by amber light was site-specifically conjugated to cysteines in a helical peptide by perfluoroarylation chemistry. In response to the photoisomerization (trans→cis) of the conjugated azobenzene with amber light, the secondary structure of the peptide was modulated from a disorganized into an amphiphilic helical structure.

Insights into structure-property relationships in ionic liquids using cyclic perfluoroalkylsulfonylimides

Room temperature ionic liquids of cyclic sulfonimide anions ncPFSI (ring size: n = 4-6) with the cations [EMIm]⁺ (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium), [BMIm]⁺ (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium) and [BMPL]⁺ (BMPL = 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium) have been synthesized. Their solid-state structures have been elucidated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and their physicochemical properties (thermal behaviour and stability, dynamic viscosity and specific conductivity) have been assessed. In addition, the ion diffusion was studied by pulsed field gradient stimulated echo (PFGSTE) NMR spectroscopy. The decisive influence of the ring size of the cyclic sulfonimide anions on the physicochemical properties of the ILs has been revealed. All ILs show different properties compared to those of the non-cyclic TFSI anion. While these differences are especially distinct for ILs with the very rigid 6cPFSI anion, the 5-membered ring anion 5cPFSI was found to result in ILs with relatively similar properties. The difference between the properties of the TFSI anion and the cyclic sulfonimide anions has been rationalized by the rigidity (conformational lock) of the cyclic sulfonimide anions. The comparison of selected IL properties was augmented by MD simulations. These highlight the importance of π⁺-π⁺ interactions between pairs of [EMIm]⁺ cations in the liquid phase. The π⁺-π⁺ interactions are evident for the solid state from the molecular structures of the [EMIm]⁺-ILs with the three cyclic imide anions determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Activation of Ge-H and Sn-H Bonds with N-Heterocyclic Carbenes and a Cyclic (Alkyl)(amino)carbene

A study of the reactivity of several N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) and the cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene 1-(2,6-di-iso-propylphenyl)-3,3,5,5-tetramethyl-pyrrolidin-2-ylidene (cAAC^Me ) with the group 14 hydrides GeH₂ Mes₂ and SnH₂ Me₂ (Me=CH₃ , Mes=1,3,5-(CH₃ )₃ C₆ H₂ ) is presented. The reaction of GeH₂ Mes₂ with cAAC^Me led to the insertion of cAAC^Me into one Ge-H bond to give cAAC^Me H-GeHMes₂ (1). If 1,3,4,5-tetramethyl-imidazolin-2-ylidene (Me₂ Im^Me ) was used as the carbene, NHC-mediated dehydrogenative coupling occurred, which led to the NHC-stabilized germylene Me₂ Im^Me ⋅GeMes₂ (2). The reaction of SnH₂ Me₂ with cAAC^Me also afforded the insertion product cAAC^Me H-SnHMe₂ (3), and reaction of two equivalents Me₂ Im^Me with SnH₂ Me₂ gave the NHC-stabilized stannylene Me₂ Im^Me ⋅SnMe₂ (4). If the sterically more demanding NHCs Me₂ Im^Me , 1,3-di-isopropyl-4,5-dimethyl-imidazolin-2-ylidene (iPr₂ Im^Me ) and 1,3-bis-(2,6-di-isopropylphenyl)-imidazolin-2-ylidene (Dipp₂ Im) were employed, selective formation of cyclic oligomers (SnMe₂ )_n (5; n=5-8) in high yield was observed. These cyclic oligomers were also obtained from the controlled decomposition of cAAC^Me H-SnHMe₂ (3).

N-heterocyclic carbene and cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene adducts of plumbanes and plumbylenes

Lewis-acid/base adducts of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) and the cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene cAAC^Me (1-(2,6-di-iso-propylphenyl)-3,3,5,5-tetramethyl-pyrrolidin-2-ylidene) with selected lead(II) and lead(IV) compounds are presented. The reaction of the NHCs Me₂Im^Me (1,3,4,5-tetramethyl-imidazolin-2-ylidene), iPr₂Im^Me (1,3-di-isopropyl-4,5-dimethyl-imidazolin-2-ylidene), Dipp₂Im (1,3-bis-(2,6-di-isopropylphenyl)-imidazolin-2-ylidene) and cAAC^Me (1-(2,6-di-iso-propylphenyl)-3,3,5,5-tetramethyl-pyrrolidin-2-ylidene) with PbI₂ yielded the NHC-containing plumbylenes NHC·PbI₂ (NHC = Me₂Im^Me (1), iPr₂Im^Me (2), Dipp₂Im (3) and cAAC^Me·PbI₂ (4)). Using the Pb(IV) compound PbCl₂Ph₂, the plumbane adducts NHC·PbCl₂Ph₂ (NHC = Me₂Im^Me (5), iPr₂Im^Me (6), Dipp₂Im (7)) and cAAC^Me·PbCl₂Ph₂ (8)) were isolated in high yields. Reduction of the lead(IV) adducts 5 and 6 with excess KC₈ afforded the diaryl substituted plumbylenes Me₂Im^Me·PbPh₂ (9) and iPr₂Im^Me·PbPh₂ (10), which are stable in the solid state but decompose in solution.

Spontaneous N2-diboranylation of [W(N2)2(dppe)2] with B2Br4(SMe2)2

The 1,3-bromoboration of [W(N₂)₂(dppe)₂] (dppe = 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane) with B₂Br₄(SMe₂)₂ in the presence of various Lewis bases L yields diboranyldiazenido complexes, with L coordinating either at the terminal or internal boron atom. The 2 : 1 reaction of [W(N₂)₂(dppe)₂] and B₂Br₄(SMe₂)₂ yields a 1,2-bis(diazenido)diborane-bridged ditungsten complex with a fully planar π-conjugated BrWN₂B₂Br₂N₂WBr core.

Tricyanoborane‐Functionalized Anionic N‐Heterocyclic Carbenes: Adjustment of Charge and Stereo‐Electronic Properties

The 1‐methyl‐3‐(tricyanoborane)imidazolin‐2‐ylidenate anion (2) was obtained in high yield by deprotonation of the B(CN)₃‐methylimidazole adduct 1. Regarding charge and stereo‐electronic properties, anion 2 closes the gap between well‐known neutral NHCs and the ditopic dianionic NHC, the 1,3‐bis(tricyanoborane)imidazolin‐2‐ylidenate dianion (IIb). The influence of the number of N‐bonded tricyanoborane moieties on the σ‐donating and π‐accepting properties of NHCs was assessed by quantum chemical calculations and verified by experimental data on 2, IIb, and 1,3‐dimethylimidazolin‐2‐ylidene (IMe, IIa). Therefore NHC 2, which acts as a ditopic ligand via the carbene center and the cyano groups, was reacted with alkyl iodides, selenium, and [Ni(CO)₄] yielding alkylated imidazoles 3 and 4, the anionic selenium adduct 5, and the anionic nickel tricarbonyl complex 8, respectively. The results of this study prove that charge, number of coordination sites, buried volume (%V_bur) and σ‐donor and π‐acceptor abilities of NHCs can be effectively fine‐tuned via the number of tricyanoborane substituents.

Dismutation of Tricyanoboryllead Compounds: The Homoleptic Tetrakis(tricyanoboryl)plumbate Tetraanion

A series of unprecedently air‐stable (tricyanoboryl)plumbate anions was obtained by the reaction of the boron‐centered nucleophile B(CN)₃²⁻ with triorganyllead halides. Salts of the anions [R₃PbB(CN)₃]⁻ (R=Ph, Et) were isolated and found to be stable in air at room temperature. In the case of Me₃PbHal (Hal=Cl, Br), a mixture of the anions [Me_4−nPb{B(CN)₃}_n]ⁿ⁻ (n=1, 2) was obtained. The [Et₃PbB(CN)₃]⁻ ion undergoes stepwise dismutation in aqueous solution to yield the plumbate anions [Et_4−nPb{B(CN)₃}_n]ⁿ⁻ (n=1–4) and PbEt₄ as by‐product. The reaction rate increases with decreasing pH value of the aqueous solution or by bubbling O₂ through the reaction mixture. Adjustment of the conditions allowed the selective formation and isolation of salts of all anions of the series [Et_4−nPb{B(CN)₃}_n]ⁿ⁻ (n=2–4) including the homoleptic tetraanion [Pb{B(CN)₃}₄]⁴⁻.

Harnessing the electronic differences between CAAC-stabilised 1,4-diborabenzene and 9,10-diboraanthracene for synthesis

The oxidation of doubly cyclic alkyl(amino)carbene-stabilised closed-shell 1,4-diborabenzene with sulfur or selenium yields S₄/S₅- or Se₄-bridged hexa-1,4-dienes, respectively, whereas that of the related open-shell singlet biradical 9,10-diboraanthracene with O₂, sulfur or selenium yields the endoperoxo- or S/Se-bridged bicyclic species, respectively.

Stable and Storable N(CF3 )2 Transfer Reagents

Fluorinated groups are essential for drug design, agrochemicals, and materials science. The bis(trifluoromethyl)amino group is an example of a stable group that has a high potential. While the number of molecules containing perfluoroalkyl, perfluoroalkoxy, and other fluorinated groups is steadily increasing, examples with the N(CF₃ )₂ group are rare. One reason is that transfer reagents are scarce and metal-based storable reagents are unknown. Herein, a set of Cu^I and Ag^I bis(trifluoromethyl)amido complexes stabilized by N- and P-donor ligands with unprecedented stability are presented. The complexes are stable solids that can even be manipulated in air for a short time. They are bis(trifluoromethyl)amination reagents as shown by nucleophilic substitution and Sandmeyer reactions. In addition to a series of benzylbis(trifluoromethyl)amines, 2-bis(trifluoromethyl)amino acetate was obtained, which, upon hydrolysis, gives the fluorinated amino acid N,N-bis(trifluoromethyl)glycine.

Phenylpyridyl-Fused Boroles: A Unique Coordination Mode and Weak B-N Coordination-Induced Dual Fluorescence

Using 4-phenylpyridine or 2-phenylpyridine in place of biphenyl, two electron-poor phenylpyridyl-fused boroles, [TipPBB1]4 and TipPBB2 were prepared. [TipPBB1]4 adopts a unique coordination mode and forms a tetramer with a cavity in both the solid state and solution. The boron center of TipPBB2 is 4-coordinate in the solid state but the system dissociates in solution, leading to 3-coordinate borole species. Compared to its borafluorene analogues, the electron-accepting ability of TipPBB2 is largely enhanced by the pyridyl group. TipPBB2 exhibits dual fluorescence in solution due to an equilibrium between free TipPBB2 and a weak intermolecular coordination adduct with a second molecule. This equilibrium was further investigated by low-temperature NMR spectroscopy and photophysical studies. Theoretical studies indicate that the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of TipPBB2 localizes at the Tip group, in contrast to its borafluorene derivatives, wherein the HOMOs are localized on the borafluorene cores.

Pentafluoroethylaluminates: A Combined Synthetic, Spectroscopic, and Structural Study

Salts of the tetrakis(pentafluoroethyl)aluminate anion [Al(C2 F5 )4 ]- were obtained from AlCl3 and LiC2 F5 . They were isolated with different counter-cations and characterized by NMR and vibrational spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Degradation of the [Al(C2 F5 )4 ]- ion was found to proceed via 1,2-fluorine shifts and stepwise loss of CF(CF3 ) under formation of [(C2 F5 )4-n AlFn ]- (n=1-4) as assessed by NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry and supported by results of DFT calculations. In addition, the [(C2 F5 )AlF3 ]- ion was structurally characterized.

Functionalization of N2 via Formal 1,3-Haloboration of a Tungsten(0) σ-Dinitrogen Complex

Boron tribromide and aryldihaloboranes were found to undergo 1,3-haloboration across one W-N≡N moiety of a group 6 end-on dinitrogen complex (i.e. trans-[W(N₂ )₂ (dppe)₂ ]). The N-borylated products consist of a reduced diazenido unit sandwiched between a W^II center and a trivalent boron substituent (W-N=N-BXAr), and have all been fully characterized by NMR and IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Both the terminal N atom and boron center in the W-N=N-BXAr unit can be further derivatized using electrophiles and nucleophiles/Lewis bases, respectively. This mild reduction and functionalization of a weakly activated N₂ ligand with boron halides is unprecedented, and hints at the possibility of generating value-added nitrogen compounds directly from molecular dinitrogen.

cAAC-Stabilized 9,10-diboraanthracenes-Acenes with Open-Shell Singlet Biradical Ground States

Narrow HOMO-LUMO gaps and high charge-carrier mobilities make larger acenes potentially high-efficient materials for organic electronic applications. The performance of such molecules was shown to significantly increase with increasing number of fused benzene rings. Bulk quantities, however, can only be obtained reliably for acenes up to heptacene. Theoretically, (oligo)acenes and (poly)acenes are predicted to have open-shell singlet biradical and polyradical ground states, respectively, for which experimental evidence is still scarce. We have now been able to dramatically lower the HOMO-LUMO gap of acenes without the necessity of unfavorable elongation of their conjugated π system, by incorporating two boron atoms into the anthracene skeleton. Stabilizing the boron centers with cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbenes gives neutral 9,10-diboraanthracenes, which are shown to feature disjointed, open-shell singlet biradical ground states.

Boranediyl- and Diborane(4)-1,2-diyl-Bridged Platinum A-Frame Complexes

Diplatinum A-frame complexes with a bridging (di)boron unit in the apex position were synthesized in a single step by the double oxidative addition of dihalo(di)borane precursors at a bis(diphosphine)-bridged Pt0 2 complex. While structurally analogous to well-known μ-borylene complexes, in which delocalized dative three-center-two-electron M-B-M bonding prevails, theoretical investigations into the nature of Pt-B bonding in these A-frame complexes show them to be rare dimetalla(di)boranes displaying two electron-sharing Pt-B σ-bonds. This is experimentally reflected in the low kinetic stability of these compounds, which are prone to loss of the (di)boron bridgehead unit.

Tetraiododiborane(4) (B2 I4 ) is a Polymer Based on sp3 Boron in the Solid State

Herein we present the first solid‐state structures of tetraiododiborane(4) (B₂I₄), which was long believed to exist in all phases as discrete molecules with planar, tricoordinate boron atoms, like the lighter tetrahalodiboranes(4) B₂F₄, B₂Cl₄, and B₂Br₄. Single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction, solid‐state NMR, and IR measurements indicate that B₂I₄ in fact exists as two different polymeric forms in the solid state, both of which feature boron atoms in tetrahedral environments. DFT calculations are used to simulate the IR spectra of the solution and solid‐state structures, and these are compared with the experimental spectra.

Diverse ring-opening reactions of rhodium η4-azaborete complexes

Sequential treatment of [Rh(COE)₂Cl]₂ (COE = cyclooctene) with PⁱPr₃, alkyne derivatives and ^tBuN Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> BMes (Mes = 2,4,6-trimethylphenyl) provided functionalized rhodium η⁴-1,2-azaborete complexes of the form (η⁴-azaborete)RhCl(PⁱPr₃). The scope of this reaction was expanded to encompass alkynes with hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, ferrocenyl, alkynyl, azaborinyl and boronate ester substituents. Treatment of these complexes with PMe₃ led to insertion of the rhodium atom into the B–C bond of the BNC₂ ring, forming 1-rhoda-3,2-azaboroles. Addition of N-heterocyclic carbenes to azaborete complexes led to highly unusual rearrangements to rhodium η²,κ¹-allenylborylamino complexes via deprotonation and C–N bond cleavage. Heating and photolysis of an azaborete complex also led to rupture of the C–N bond followed by subsequent rearrangements, yielding an η⁴-aminoborylallene complex and two isomeric η⁴-butadiene complexes.

Rhodium η⁴-azaborete complexes can be transformed into a variety of species with ring-opened, BN-containing ligands by treatment with Lewis bases.

Spontaneous trans-Selective Transfer Hydrogenation of Apolar Boron-Boron Double Bonds

The transfer hydrogenation of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-supported diborenes with dimethylamine borane proceeds with high selectivity for the trans-1,2-dihydrodiboranes. DFT calculations, supported by kinetic studies and deuteration experiments, suggest a stepwise proton-first-hydride-second reaction mechanism via an intermediate μ-hydrodiboronium dimethylaminoborate ion pair.

Tuning the π-bridge of quadrupolar triarylborane chromophores for one- and two-photon excited fluorescence imaging of lysosomes in live cells

A series of tetracationic quadrupolar chromophores containing three-coordinate boron π-acceptors linked by different π-bridges, namely 4,4'-biphenyl, 2,7-pyrene, 2,7-fluorene, 3,6-carbazole and 5,5'-di(thien-2-yl)-3,6-diketopyrrolopyrrole, were synthesized. While their neutral precursors 1-5 displayed highly solvatochromic fluorescence, the water-soluble tetracationic target molecules 1M-5M, did not, but their emission colour could be tuned from blue to pink by changing the π-bridge. Compound 5M, containing the diketopyrrolopyrrole bridge, exhibits the most red-shifted absorption and emission maxima and the largest two-photon absorption cross-section (4560 GM at 740 nm in MeCN). Confocal laser scanning fluorescence microscopy studies in live cells confirm localization of the dye at the lysosome. Moreover, the low cytotoxicity, and high photostability of 5M combined with two-photon excited fluorescence imaging studies demonstrate its excellent potential for lysosomal imaging in live cells.

The reductive coupling of dinitrogen

The coupling of two or more molecules of dinitrogen (N2) occurs naturally under the radiative conditions present in the ionosphere and may be achieved synthetically under ultrahigh pressure or plasma conditions. However, the comparatively low N–N single-bond enthalpy generally renders the catenation of the strongly triple-bonded N2 diatomic unfavorable and the decomposition of nitrogen chains a common reaction motif. Here, we report the surprising organoboron-mediated catenation of two N2 molecules under near-ambient conditions to form a complex in which a [N4]2– chain bridges two boron centers. The reaction entails reductive coupling of two hypovalent-boron-bound N2 units in a single step. Both this complex and a derivative protonated at both ends of the chain were characterized crystallographically.

Carba-closo-dodecaboranylethynyl ligands facilitating luminescent reversed charge-transfer excited states in gold/silver complexes

Homo- and heterometallic gold(i) and silver(i) complexes with the carba-closo-dodecaboranylethynyl ligand were obtained and the participation of the boron cluster to the photophysical properties was proven.

Reactivity of Tetrahalo- and Difluorodiboranes(4) toward Lewis Basic Platinum(0): Bis(boryl), Borylborato, and Doubly Boryl-Bridged Platinum Complexes

The reaction of the tetrahalodiboranes(4) B₂F₄, B₂Cl₄, and B₂Br₄ with a Lewis basic platinum(0) complex led to the isolation of the cis-bis(difluoroboryl) complex cis-[(Cy₃P)₂Pt(BF₂)₂] (1) and the novel borylborato complexes trans-[(Cy₃P)₂Pt{B(X)-BX₃}] (2, X = Cl; 3, X = Br), respectively. The trans influence of the borylborato group was found to be one of the strongest ever observed experimentally. Furthermore, the reactivity of little-explored diaryldifluorodiboranes(4) F₂B-BMes₂ and the new derivative F₂B-BAn₂ (An = 9-anthryl) toward a range of platinum(0) complexes was investigated. Reactions with relatively nonbulky platinum(0) complexes led to the formation of unsymmetrical cis-bis(boryl) complexes cis-[(R₃P)₂Pt(BF₂)(BMes₂)] (6, R = Me; 7, R = Et) as well as the first example of a fourfold-unsymmetrical bis(boryl) complex, [(Me₃P)(Cy₃P)Pt(BF₂)(BMes₂)] (12). The use of a more bulky Pt complex provided access to the unprecedented dinuclear bis(boryl) complexes [{( iPr₃P)Pt}₂(μ-BF₂)(μ-BAr₂)] (8, Ar = Mes; 9, Ar = An), which feature two different μ₂-bridging boryl ligands.

Stimulus-Triggered Formation of an Anion-Cation Exciplex in Copper(I) Complexes as a Mechanism for Mechanochromic Phosphorescence

The investigation of the mechanisms of mechanochromic luminescence is of fundamental importance for the development of materials for photonic sensors, data storage, and luminescence switches. The structural origin of this phenomenon in phosphorescent molecular systems is rarely known and thus the formulation of structure-property relationships remains challenging. Changes in the M-M interactions have been proposed as the main mechanism with d¹⁰ coinage metal compounds. Herein, we describe a new mechanism-a mechanically induced reversible formation of a cation-anion exciplex based on Cu-F interactions-that leads to highly efficient mechanochromic phosphorescence and unusual large emission shifts from UV-blue to yellow for Cu^I complexes. The low-energy luminescence is thermo- and vaporesponsive, thus allowing the generation of white light as well as for recovering the original UV-blue emission.

B-B bond activation and NHC ring-expansion reactions of diboron(4) compounds, and accurate molecular structures of B2(NMe2)4, B2eg2, B2neop2 and B2pin2

In this detailed study we report on the structures of the widely employed diboron(4) compounds bis(pinacolato)diboron (B₂pin₂) and bis(neopentyl glycolato)diboron (B₂neop₂), as well as bis(ethylene glycolato)diboron (B₂eg₂) and tetrakis(dimethylamino)diboron (B₂(NMe₂)₄), and their reactivity, along with that of bis(catecholato)diboron (B₂cat₂) with backbone saturated and backbone unsaturared N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) of different steric demand. Depending on the nature of the diboron(4) compound and the NHC used, Lewis-acid/Lewis-base adducts or NHC ring-expansion products stemming from B-B and C-N bond activation have been observed. The corresponding NHC adducts and NHC ring-expanded products were isolated and characterised via solid-state and solution NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. In general, we observed B-B bond and C-N bond activation at low temperature for B₂eg₂, at room temperature for B₂neop₂ and at higher temperature for B₂cat₂. The reactivity strongly depends on steric effects of the NHCs and the diboron(4) compounds, as well as on the corresponding Lewis-basicity and Lewis-acidity. Our results provide profound insight into the chemistry of these diboron(4) reagents with the nowadays ubiquitous NHCs, the stability of the corresponding NHC adducts and on B-B bond activation using Lewis-bases in general. We demonstrate that B-B bond activation may be triggered even at temperatures as low as -40 °C to -30 °C without any metal species involved. For example, the reactions of B₂eg₂ with sterically less demanding NHCs such as Me₂Im^Me and iPr₂Im in solution led to the corresponding ring-expanded products at low temperatures. Furthermore, boronium [L₂B(OR)₂]⁺ and borenium [LB(OR)₂]⁺ cations have been observed from the reaction of the bis-borate B₂eg₃ with the NHCs iPr₂Im and Me₂Im^Me, which led to the conclusion that the activation of bis-borates with NHCs (or Lewis-bases in general) might be a facile and simple route to access such species.

Palladium-Catalyzed Oxidative Borylation of Allylic C-H Bonds in Alkenes

This communication describes an efficient palladium pincer complex-catalyzed allylic C-H borylation of alkenes. The transformation exhibits high regio- and stereoselectivity with a variety of linear alkenes. A synthetically useful feature of this allylic C-H borylation method is that all allyl-Bpin products can be isolated in usually high yields. Preliminary mechanistic studies indicate that this C-H borylation reaction proceeds via Pd(IV) pincer complex intermediates.
