Liquid Ammonia: More than an Innocent Solvent for Zintl Anions

Liquid ammonia as the original solvent for Zintl anions has been replaced by easier to handle or more versatile solvents in most recent Zintl chemistry. However, methodological advances have made it possible to structurally investigate the anions in ammoniate crystals via crystallography or in the solutions themselves via nuclear magnetic resonance. While in some cases liquid ammonia acts as an innocent solvent, it also provides different possibilities of direct involvement in chemical reactions. In addition to simple dissolution without changes to the anions observed in the solid starting materials, protonation of the anion, incongruent dissolution involving redox processes, and further oxidation and reduction products have been observed. The use of the solvent liquid ammonia under ambient pressure is limited to low temperatures, which in turn allows the monitoring of kinetically stabilized species, some of which cannot be accessed at higher temperatures. In this work, the available literature reports are summarized or referenced, and compounds that have been characterized as new ammoniate crystals are presented and contextualized. Innocent dissolution is observed for clusters involved in K2.9Rb5.1[Si4][Si9]·15NH3, Cs4Sn9·12NH3, Cs4Pb9·5NH3, and [Rb@[18]crown-6]2[Rb@[2.2.2]crypt]Rb[Ge9]·4NH3. Formal protonation of [Ge4]4- results in the crystallization of [Na@[2.2.2]crypt]2[H2Ge4]·3NH3. Tt52- (Tt = Sn or Pb) and HSi93- cannot be accessed in a binary solid state material but can be crystallized in co-crystals of PPh3 in [Rb@[2.2.2]crypt]2[Sn5][PPh3]2·NH3, [Rb@[2.2.2]crypt]2[Pb5][PPh3]2·NH3, and [K@[2.2.2]crypt]3[HSi9][PPh3]·5NH3.

Reactivity of Tetrel-Functionalized Heptaphosphane Clusters toward Azides

In this work, the reactivity of tetrel-functionalized phosphorus clusters toward organoazides is probed. Clusters (Me3Si)3P7 (1) and (Me3Ge)3P7 (2) were reacted with benzyl azide, phenyl azide, and 4-bromophenyl azide, and it was found that the [RN] (R = benzyl, phenyl, and 4-bromophenyl) unit from the azide inserted into the phosphorus-tetrel bonds on the cluster, accompanied by N2 elimination. Through control of the azide stoichiometry, the mono-, bis-, and tris-inserted products could be observed, consistent with these insertions proceeding in a stepwise manner. The bonding between the amine moieties and clusters was further investigated by computational chemistry, and the findings were consistent with the phosphorus cluster having undergone a formal oxidation. These insertion reactions are a convenient means of accessing Zintl clusters functionalized with exo-nitrogen-bonded moieties, which, to the best of our knowledge, were previously unknown.

A Sodium Germanosilicide with Unusual Network Topology

The germanosilicide Na4-xGeySi16-y (0.4 ≤ x ≤ 1.1, 4.7 ≤ y ≤ 9.3) was synthesized under high-pressure, high-temperature conditions. The novel guest-host compound comprises a unique tetrel framework with dual channels housing sodium and smaller, empty (Si,Ge)9 units. The arrangement represents a new structure type with an overall structural topology that is closely related to a hypothetical carbon allotrope. Topological analysis of the structure revealed that the guest environment space cannot be tiled with singular polyhedra as in cage compounds (e.g., clathrates). The analysis of natural tilings provides a convenient method to unambiguously compare related tetrel-rich structures and can help elucidate new possible structural arrangements of intermetallic compounds.

[Bi10{RuPPh3}3]-: Paramagnetic 13-Vertex Polybismuthide Heteroanion

Ru(PPh3)3Cl2 reacts with Binn- from an ethylenediamine (en) solution of K5Bi4 to yield a new architype of 13-vertex [Bi10{RuPPh3}3]- (1) composed of unprecedented incomplete cuboidal Bi73- and triangular Bi33- held together by {RuPPh3}2+.

A Series of Cyclopentadienyl Lanthanum Complexes with Metalloid Germanium Clusters

A series of cyclopentadienyllanthanum complexes with the disilylated metalloid germanium cluster [Ge9(Hyp)2]2- [Hyp = Si(SiMe3)3] has been prepared and fully characterized. The synthetic procedure is based on the salt metathesis reaction of two different cyclopentadienyllanthanum diiodides CpLaI2 (Cp: Cp*, pentamethylcyclopentadienyl; Cpttt, 1,2,4-tri-tert-butylcyclopentadienyl) with K2[Ge9(Hyp)2] in tetrahydrofuran (THF) with a subsequent extraction with n-hexane. The composition of the obtained compounds and the mode of coordination of the germanium cluster to the rare-earth metal are strongly influenced by the steric demand of the cyclopentadienyl ligands and the crystallization conditions. The centrosymmetric dimeric compounds with the common formula [CpLa(solv)(η2,3-Ge9(Hyp)2)]2 [1, Cp = Cp*, solv-THF; 2, Cp = Cpttt, solv-NCCH2C(Me)NSiMe3] have been isolated by the slow evaporation of a n-hexane solution, while a mononuclear complex [CptttLa(THF)2(η3-Ge9(Hyp)2)] (4) was found by crystallization from THF. The repeated recrystallization of 1 from n-hexane afforded the asymmetric dimer [Cp*La(THF)(η2,3-Ge9(Hyp)2)][Cp*La(η2,3-Ge9(Hyp)2)] (3) with only one coordinated THF molecule.

Navigating the 18-n+m Isomers of PdSn2: Chemical Pressure Relief through Isolobal Bonds and Main Group Clustering

The 18-n electron-counting rule provides structural guidelines for electronically feasible transition metal (T)-main group (E) phases, contributing toward the goal of material design. However, the availability of numerous potential structure types at any electron count creates a challenge for the prediction of the preferred structures of specific compounds, as is illustrated by the concept of 18-n+m isomerism. In this Article, we explore the driving forces stabilizing one 18-n+m isomer over another with an analysis of the structure of PdSn2, a layered intergrowth of the fluorite and CuAl2 structure types. The DFT-reversed approximation Molecular Orbital (DFT-raMO) method reveals that PdSn2 and its hypothetical parent structures all adhere to bonding schemes approximating the electronic configurations expected from the 18-n rule, with various degrees of isolobal Pd-Pd bonding and Sn clustering. However, partial electron transfer between the Pd 5p orbitals to the Sn 5s orbitals contributes to the absence of convincing electronic pseudogaps near their Fermi energies. As such, there is no clear electronically driven preference among the structure types. This situation allows for atomic packing effects to prevail: DFT-Chemical Pressure (DFT-CP) analysis illustrates that in the fluorite-type parent structure, positive Pd-Sn CPs lead to overcompression of the Pd atoms and a stretching of the relatively open Sn sublattice. In contrast, in the CuAl2-type parent structure, Sn atoms cluster into tetrahedra, opening space for an expanded Pd environment and the formation of Pd-Pd interactions. However, the tetrahedral packing of the Sn atoms here leads to frustration between negative and positive Sn-Sn CPs. Through the development of the angular CP correlation function (CPcor+) as a tool to quantify frustration among interatomic interactions, we demonstrate how the observed PdSn2 structure balances these effects by tuning the degree of Sn-Sn clustering and expansion of the Pd environment. These observations point to generalizations for most 18-n+m isomers, where increased main group ligand clustering (+m) and isolobal bonds (+n) can accommodate compositions with different T and E atomic sizes.

Zintl Phase versus Covalent Metal: Chemical Bonding in Silicon Dumbbells of Ca5Si3 and CaSi3

Silicon dumbbells constitute identifiable anionic molecular species in Zintl phases and so-called covalent metals holding units with homopolar bonding inside a metallic framework. Based on electron-precise Ca5Si3 and metallic CaSi3, the chemical bonding in Si2 units is investigated by computational quantum chemical methods considering the dual nature of the wave function. This concerted wave-vector and real space study substantiates that the Si2 dumbbells in Ca5Si3 can be referred to as molecular building units Si26- with additional metallic and ionic contributions in the solid. In the covalent metal CaSi3, however, the bonding within the dumbbells falls short of fulfilling the octet rule. As a result, antibonding states of the Si2 building units are depopulated and attend metallic interactions, simultaneously giving rise to stronger covalent Si-Si bonds.

Recent advances in atomic cluster synthesis: a perspective from chemical elements

Despite its potential significance, "cluster chemistry" remains a somewhat marginalized topic within the chemistry field. However, atomic clusters with their unusual and unique structures and properties represent a novel material group situated between molecules and nanoparticles or solid matter, judging from both scientific standpoints and historical backgrounds. Surveying an entire material group, including all substances that can be regarded as a cluster, is essential for establishing cluster chemistry as a more prominent chemistry field. This review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding by categorizing, summarizing, and reviewing clusters, focusing on their constituent elements in the periodic table. However, because numerous disparate synthetic processes have been individually developed to date, their straightforward and uniform classification is a challenging task. As such, comprehensively reviewing this field from a chemical composition viewpoint presents significant obstacles. It should be therefore noted that despite adopting a synthetic method-based classification in this review, the discussions presented herein could entail inaccuracies. Nevertheless, this unorthodox viewpoint unfolds a new scientific perspective which accentuates the common ground between different development processes by emphasizing the lack of a definitive border between their synthetic methods and material groups, thus opening new avenues for cementing cluster chemistry as an attractive chemistry field.

Extension and Fusion of Cyclic Polyantimony Units

The synthesis and characterization of a series of polyantimony anionic clusters are reported. The products [(NbCp)2Sb10]2-, [MSb13]3- (M = Ru/Fe), and [MSb15]3- (M = Ru/Fe) were isolated as either K(18-crown-6) or K([2.2.2]-crypt) salts. The Sb10 ring contained in the [(NbCp)2Sb10]2- cluster can be viewed as an extension of two envelope-like cyclo-Sb5 units and represents by far the largest monocyclic all-antimony species. The clusters [MSb13]3- and [MSb15]3- (M = Ru/Fe) illustrate the variability of crown-like Sb8 ring motifs and reveal the fusion of different antimony fragments featuring unique Sb-Sb chain-like units. The reported synthetic approaches involve the fabrication of a variety of distinctive polyantimony anionic clusters, enhancing our understanding of the coordination chemistry of heavier group 15 elements.

Zintl Clusters as a Platform for Lewis Acid Catalysis

Clusters of the main group elements phosphorus and arsenic, commonly categorized as Zintl clusters, have been known for over a century. And, only now is the application of these systems as catalysts for organic synthesis being investigated. In this work, boranes are tethered via an aliphatic linker to Zintl-based clusters and their Lewis acidity is examined experimentally, by the Gutmann-Beckett test and competency in the hydroborative reduction of six organic substrates, as well as computationally, by fluoride ion affinity and hydride ion affinity methods. The effects of tuning the aliphatic linker length, substituents at the boron, and changing the cluster from a seven-atom phosphorus system to a seven-atom arsenic system on reactivity are studied.

f-Element Zintl Chemistry: Actinide-Mediated Dehydrocoupling of H2Sb1- Affords the Trithorium and Triuranium Undeca-Antimontriide Zintl Clusters [{An(TrenTIPS)}3(μ3-Sb11)] (An = Th, U; TrenTIPS = {N(CH2CH2NSiiPr3)3}3-)

Reaction of the cesium antimonide complex [Cs(18C6)2][SbH2] (1, 18C6 = 18-crown-6 ether) with the triamidoamine actinide separated ion pairs [An(TrenTIPS)(L)][BPh4] (TrenTIPS = {N(CH2CH2NSiiPr3)3}3-; An/L = Th/DME (2Th); U/THF (2U)) affords the triactinide undeca-antimontriide Zintl clusters [{An(TrenTIPS)}3(μ3-Sb11)] (An = Th (3Th), U (3U)) by dehydrocoupling. Clusters 3Th and 3U provide two new examples of the Sb113- Zintl trianion and are unprecedented examples of molecular Sb113- being coordinated to anything since all previous reports featured isolated Sb113- Zintl trianions in separated ion quadruple formulations with noncoordinating cations. Quantum chemical calculations describe dominant ionic An-Sb interactions in 3Th and 3U, though the data suggest that the latter exhibits slightly more covalent An-Sb linkages than the former. Complexes 3Th and 3U have been characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, NMR, IR, and UV/vis/NIR spectroscopies, elemental analysis, and quantum chemical calculations.

Fragment Orbitals Extracted from First-Principles Plane-Wave Calculations

Decomposing extended structures into smaller, molecular, even functional groups or simple fragments has a long tradition in chemistry because it allows for understanding certain electronic peculiarities in truly chemical terms. By doing so, invaluable property information is chemically accessible, for example, needed to rationalize catalytic or magnetic or optical nature. In order to also follow that train of thought for periodic materials, we have developed a tool which in a straightforward manner derives fragment molecular orbitals from plane-wave electronic-structure data of whatever kind of solid-state material. We here report on the mathematical apparatus of the method dubbed linear combination of fragment orbitals (LCFO) used for that purpose, implemented within the LOBSTER code. The method is illustrated from various sorts of molecular entities contained in such crystalline materials, together with an assessment of both accuracy and robustness of the new tool.

Tetrylene-Functionalized Si7-Siliconoids

The core expansion of metallic or metalloid clusters by the addition of further homo- or heteronuclear vertices is pivotal to the nucleation and growth of particles. The exohedral grafting of a low-valent functionality followed by endohedral incorporation have been identified as key steps. Following previous work on the Si6 series, we now report the synthesis and full characterization of the amidinatotetrylene-functionalized seven-vertex siliconoids Si7R5[E(NtBu)2CPh] (E = Si, Ge, Sn). In the case of the silylene derivative, the solid-state structure was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction.

[Ag(Sn9-Sn9)]5- and [(η4-Sn9)Ag(η1-Sn9)]7-, as aggregates of spherical aromatic building blocks. Persistence of aromaticity upon cluster gathering

Formation of cluster-based materials requires a fundamental understanding of the resulting cluster aggregation processes. The Sn94- Zintl-ion structure can be viewed as a building block featuring a spherical aromatic species, leading to a cluster gathering upon oxidative coupling and/or mediated by transition metals. Here, we evaluate the spherical aromatic properties of [Sn9-Sn9]6-, [Ag(Sn9-Sn9)]5- and [(η4-Sn9)Ag(η1-Sn9)]7-, as aggregates of two Sn9 building units held together via oxidative coupling and mediated by a Ag(I) transition metal center. Our results from magnetic criteria of aromaticity show that the inherent spherical aromatic characteristics of the parent Sn94- cluster are persistent in the overall aggregate where the enabled shielding cones ascribed to each Sn9 unit are able to interplay between them, leading to an overlap of the shielding regions. Hence, the two approaches for bringing cluster units together are able to retain the inherent spherical aromatic features for each Sn9 unit, leading to a cluster-based dimer where the parent properties remain. Thus, further cluster-based materials can be envisaged from aggregation upon oxidative coupling and/or mediated by transition metals, where the constituent building blocks retain their initial features, useful to guide the formation of more complex cluster-based aggregates.

Ligand-free supermolecules: [Pd2@Ge18]4- and [Pd2@Sn18]4- as multiple-bonded Zintl-ion clusters based on Pd@Ge9 and Pd@Sn9 assembled units

Understanding intercluster bonding interactions is important in the rational synthesis of building blocks for molecular materials. Such characteristics have been developed for coinage metal clusters resembling single-, double-, and triple-bonded species, coined as supermolecules. Herein, we extend such an approach for understanding main-group clusters, thus evaluating [Pd2@E18]4- clusters (E = Ge, Sn) involving the fusion of parent spherical aromatic [Pd@E12]2- building units. Our results indicate intercluster bonding provided by contribution from 2P and 1G shells centered at each building motif, leading to an overall bond order of 2.70 and 2.31 for [Pd2@Ge18]4- and [Pd2@Sn18]4-, respectively. In addition, 119Sn-NMR patterns were evaluated to complement the experimental characterization of a single peak owing to the insolution fluxional behavior of [Pd2@Sn18]4- as three peaks owing to the three sets of unique Sn atoms within the structure. Magnetic response properties revealed that spherical aromatic characteristics from parent [Pd@E12]2- building units are retained in the overall [Pd2@E18]4- oblate cluster as two spherical aromatic units. Hence, the notion of superatomic molecules is extended to Zintl-ion clusters, favoring further rationalization for the fabrication of cluster-assembled solids.

[Tl7]7- Clusters in Mixed Alkali Metal Thallides Cs7.29K5.71Tl13 and Cs3.45K3.55Tl7

Investigations in the ternary system Cs-K-Tl resulted in the unexpected formation of new ternary thallides Cs7.29K5.71Tl13 and Cs3.45K3.55Tl7. Single crystal X-ray structure analyses of both compounds reveal the presence of isolated Tl cluster units. Cs7.29K5.71Tl13 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/c (a = 30.7792(9) Å, b = 11.000(2) Å, c = 14.0291(4) Å, β = 112.676(4)°, Z = 4) and contains [Tl6]6- and [Tl7]7- clusters as thallium subunits. Cs3.45K3.55Tl7 crystallizes in the tetragonal space group I41/a (a = 13.6177(2) Å, c = 25.5573(8) Å, Z = 8) and contains [Tl7]7- clusters exclusively. The formation of Cs7.29K5.71Tl13 is obtained after slow cooling in addition to that of Cs3.45K3.55Tl7 and can be suppressed by quenching the stoichiometric mixture. First dissolution experiments in liquid ammonia suggest thallium and amide as final oxidation products. Full relativistic band structure calculations of Cs4K3Tl7 and Cs8K5Tl13 showed a (pseudo) band gap around EF for both compounds.

Zintl Ions and Phases Promote the Catalytic Hydrophosphination of Alkynes, Alkenes, and Imines

Although Zintl ions and phases have been known for more than a century, their application as tools to build organic molecules is underdeveloped. Here, a range of Zintl ions and phases were surveyed in the hydrophosphination of alkynes, alkenes, and imines with diphenylphosphine to afford useful organophosphine products. Further investigations with diphenylphosphine in the absence of the unsaturated organic substrates revealed the formation of the diphenylphosphide anion, allowing for the conclusion that the role of the Zintl species is as an initiator in these transformations.

Confined Lewis Pairs: Investigation of the X- →Si20 Interaction in Halogen-Encapsulating Silafulleranes

A joint theoretical and experimental study on 32 endohedral silafullerane derivatives [X@Si20 Y20 ]- (X=F-I; Y=F-I, H, Me, Et) andT h ${T_h }$ -[Cl@Si20 H12 Y8 ]- (Y=F-I) is presented. First, we evaluated the structure-determining template effect of Cl- in a systematic series of concave silapolyquinane model systems. Second, we investigated the X- →Si20 interaction energy (E int ${E_{{\rm{int}}} }$ ) as a function of X- and Y and found the largestE int ${E_{{\rm{int}}} }$ values for electron-withdrawing exohedral substituents Y. Given that X- ions can be considered as Lewis bases and empty Si20 Y20 clusters as Lewis acids, we classify our inseparable host-guest complexes [X@Si20 Y20 ]- as "confined Lewis pairs". Third, 35 Cl NMR spectroscopy proved to be highly diagnostic for an experimental assessment of the Cl- →Si20 interaction as the paramagnetic shielding and, in turn, δ ${\delta }$ (35 Cl) of the endohedral Cl- ion correlate inversely withE int ${E_{{\rm{int}}} }$ . Finally, we disclose the synthesis of [PPN][Cl@Si20 Y20 ] (Y=Me, Et, Br) and provide a thorough characterization of these new silafulleranes.

Dimeric polybismuth heteroanion of [Rh@Bi10(RhCO)5]2- constructed using Bi10-bowl and square pyramidal Rh@(Rh-CO)5

Redox reaction of the monovalent Rh2(CO)4Cl2 and Binn- (n = 2, 3) from K5Bi4 in ethylenediamine (en) solution produced the decabismuthide-hexarhodium dianion [Rh@Bi10(RhCO)5]2- (1a) wherein a novel Bi10-bowl was constructed from oxidized 2Bi3/2Bi2 open triangles/dimers, which was stabilized by strong bonding to a reduced Rh@(RhCO)5 square pyramid. Two 1a dianons are held together by weak interactions (van der Waals forces and spatial resistance) to form a dimer [Rh@Bi10(RhCO)5]24- (1). The structure and bonding of the novel polybismuthide heteroanion 1 are discussed.

Zintl Phases: From Curiosities to Impactful Materials

The synthesis of new compounds and crystal structures remains an important research endeavor in pursuing technologically relevant materials. The Zintl concept is a guidepost for the design of new functional solid-state compounds. Zintl phases are named in recognition of Eduard Zintl, a German chemist who first studied a subgroup of intermetallics prepared with electropositive metals combined with main-group metalloids from groups 13-15 in the 1930s. Unlike intermetallic compounds, where metallic bonding is the norm, Zintl phases exhibit a combination of ionic and covalent bonding and are typically semiconductors. Zintl phases provide a palette for iso- and aliovalent substitutions that can each contribute uniquely to the properties. Zintl electron-counting rules can be employed to interrogate a structure type and develop a foundation of structure-property relationships. Employing substitutional chemistry allows for the rational design of new Zintl compounds with technological properties, such as magnetoelectronics, thermoelectricity, and other energy storage and conversion capabilities. Discovering new structure types and compositions through this approach is also possible. The background on the strength and innovation of the Zintl concept and a few highlights of Zintl phases with promising thermoelectric properties in the context of structural and electronic design will be provided.

Insight into the formation of bismuth-tungsten carbonyl clusters

Multimetallic clusters play a key role as models to doped metals, as candidates to new types of superatomic catalysts and as precursors to new multimetallic solids. Understanding formation pathways is an essential and necessary step forward in the development of cluster synthesis and research, yet remains considerably lacking owing to difficulty in identification of intermediates and the ill-defined nature of common starting materials. Here we show progress in this regard by investigating the reactivity of an intermetallic solid of nominal composition 'K₅Ga₂Bi₄' with [W(cod)(CO)₄] upon extraction with ethane-1,2-diamine (en) and 4,7,13,16,21,24-hexaoxa-1,10-diazabicyclo[8.8.8]hexacosane (crypt-222). Several polybismuthide intermediates and by-products were identified along the reaction pathway, ultimately forming the new polybismuthide salt [K(crypt-222)]₃[µ:η³-Bi₃{W(CO)₃}₂]∙en∙tol. DFT calculations revealed plausible reaction schemes for the transformations taking place in the reaction mixture providing insight into the complex reactivity of 'K₅Ga₂Bi₄' on the basis of in situ generation of Bi₂^2-.

Regioselective Derivatization of Silylated [20]Silafulleranes

Silafulleranes with endohedral Cl^- ions are a unique, scarcely explored class of structurally well-defined silicon clusters and host-guest complexes. Herein, we report regioselective derivatization reactions on the siladodecahedrane [nBu₄N][Cl@Si₂₀(SiCl₃)₁₂Cl₈] ([nBu₄N][1]), which has its cluster surface decorated with 12 SiCl₃ and 8 Cl substituents in perfect T_h symmetry. The room-temperature reaction of [nBu₄N][1] with excess iBu₂AlH in ortho-difluorobenzene (oDFB) furnishes perhydrogenated [nBu₄N][Cl@Si₂₀(SiH₃)₁₂H₈] ([nBu₄N][2]) in 50% yield; the non-pyrophoric [2]^- is the largest structurally authenticated (by X-ray diffraction) hydridosilane known to date. A simple switch from pure oDFB to an oDFB/Et₂O solvent mixture suppresses core hydrogenation and results in the formation of [nBu₄N][Cl@Si₂₀(SiH₃)₁₂Cl₈] ([nBu₄N][3]). In addition to the exhaustive Cl/H exchange at all 44 Si-Cl bonds of [1]^- and the regioselective 36-fold silyl group hydrogenation, we achieved the simultaneous introduction of Me substituents at all 8 SiCl vertices along with the conversion of all 12 SiCl₃ to SiH₃ groups by treating [nBu₄N][1] with Me₂AlH/Me₃Al in oDFB ([nBu₄N][Cl@Si₂₀(SiH₃)₁₂Me₈], [nBu₄N][4]; 73%). Quantum-chemical free-energy calculations find an S_N2-Si-type hydrogenation of the exohedral SiCl₃ moieties in [1]^- (trigonal-bipyramidal intermediate) slightly preferred over metathesis-like S_Ni-Si substitutions (four-membered transition state). Cage hydrogenation likely occurs via S_Ni-Si processes. The experimentally demonstrated influence of an Et₂O co-solvent, which drastically increases the respective reaction barriers, is attributed to the increased stability of the resulting iBu₂AlH-OEt₂ adduct and its higher steric bulk compared to free iBu₂AlH.

Reactivity of tetrel functionalized heptapnictogen clusters towards heteroallenes

Despite being known for decades, the solution-state molecular chemistry of heptapnictogen ([Pn₇]^3-; Pn = P, As) clusters is not well established. Here we study heavy element derivatives of tetrel functionalized heptapnictogen clusters towards heteroallene capture, specifically isocyanates, an isothiocyanate and CO₂ are probed. Clusters (Me₃Ge)₃P₇ (1), (Et₃Ge)₃P₇ (2), (ⁿBu₃Sn)₃P₇ (3), and (Me₃Si)₃As₇ (4) were all found to capture isocyanates between all three of their tetrel-pnictogen bonds. In the case of phenyl isocyanate insertion, tetrel coordination at the isocyanate nitrogen atoms is preferred, while in the case of p-toluenesulfonyl isocyanate insertion, tetrel coordination at oxygen is preferred. Furthermore, the reaction of (Me₃Si)₃P₇ with CO₂ gave NMR spectra consistent with the capture of the greenhouse gas. Heteroallene insertion at these clusters was also studied using density functional theory.

Disproportionation and Ligand Lability in Low Oxidation State Boryl-Tin Chemistry

Boryltin compounds featuring the metal in the+1 or 0 oxidation states can be synthesized from the carbene-stabilized tin(II) bromide (boryl)Sn(NHC)Br (boryl={B(NDippCH)2 }; NHC=C{(Ni PrCMe)2 }) by the use of strong reducing agents. The formation of the mono-carbene stabilized distannyne and donor-free distannide systems (boryl)SnSn(IPrMe)(boryl) (2) and K2 [Sn2 (boryl)2 ] (3), using Mg(I) and K reducing agents mirrors related germanium chemistry. In contrast to their lighter congeners, however, systems of the type [Sn(boryl)]n are unstable with respect to disproportionation. Carbene abstraction from 2 using BPh3 , and two-electron oxidation of 3 both result in the formation of a 2 : 1 mixture of the Sn(II) compound Sn(boryl)2 , and the hexatin cluster, Sn6 (boryl)4 (4). A viable mechanism for this rearrangement is shown by quantum chemical studies to involve a vinylidene intermediate (analogous to the isolable germanium compound, (boryl)2 Ge=Ge), which undergoes facile atom transfer to generate Sn(boryl)2 and trinuclear [Sn3 (boryl)2 ]. The latter then dimerizes to give the observed hexametallic product 4, with independent studies showing that similar trigermanium species aggregate in analogous fashion.

[M@Sn14-xSbx]q- (M = La, Ce, or U; x = 6-8; q = 3, 4): Interaction of 4f or 5f Metal Ions with 5p Metal Atoms in Intermetalloid Clusters

The impact of 4f metal ions Ln³⁺ (Ln = La or Ce) versus 5f metal ions Uⁿ⁺ (n = 3 or 4) on the compositions and distribution of 5p metal atoms in the cluster shells of endohedral species [M@Sn_14-xSb_x]^q- (M = La, Ce, or U; x = 6-8; q = 3, 4) was studied by means of combined experimental and quantum chemical investigations. While all known f-block metal ion-centered endohedral clusters possessed combinations of larger main group metal atoms so far (Sn/Bi or Pb/Bi), resulting in mixtures of 13- and 14-atom cages, the 14-atom cages reported herein comprise exclusively Sn and Sb atoms and therefore are challenged in accommodating the large 4f and 5f ions. We show that the clusters form in reactions of (Sn₂Sb₂)^2- anions with [Ln(C₅Me₄H)₃] or [U(C₅Me₄H)₃Cl], and that salts of [La@Sn₆Sb₈]^3-, [La@Sn₇Sb₇]^4-, [U@Sn₈Sb₆]^4-, and [U@Sn₇Sb₇]^3- can be isolated from them. The assignment of Sn versus Sb in the encapsulating cage follows a simple rule. Different central atoms cause only slight differences in this regard and with respect to distortions of the cluster shells. The reactions also yielded the salt of the new binary anion (Sn₄Sb₄)^2- that was recently predicted by quantum chemical studies.

Platonic and Archimedean solids in discrete metal-containing clusters

Metal-containing clusters have attracted increasing attention over the past 2-3 decades. This intense interest can be attributed to the fact that these discrete metal aggregates, whose atomically precise structures are resolved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD), often possess intriguing geometrical features (high symmetry, aesthetically pleasing shapes and architectures) and fascinating physical properties, providing invaluable opportunities for the intersection of different disciplines including chemistry, physics, mathematical geometry and materials science. In this review, we attempt to reinterpret and connect these fascinating clusters from the perspective of Platonic and Archimedean solid characteristics, focusing on highly symmetrical and complex metal-containing (metal = Al, Ti, V, Mo, W, U, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Pd, Pt, Cu, Ag, Au, lanthanoids (Ln), and actinoids) high-nuclearity clusters, including metal-oxo/hydroxide/chalcogenide clusters and metal clusters (with metal-metal binding) protected by surface organic ligands, such as thiolate, phosphine, alkynyl, carbonyl and nitrogen/oxygen donor ligands. Furthermore, we present the symmetrical beauty of metal cluster structures and the geometrical similarity of different types of clusters and provide a large number of examples to show how to accurately describe the metal clusters from the perspective of highly symmetrical polyhedra. Finally, knowledge and further insights into the design and synthesis of unknown metal clusters are put forward by summarizing these "star" molecules.

Reactive Solubilization of Heterometallic Clusters by Treatment of (TrBi3 )2- Anions (Tr=Ga, In, Tl) with [Mn{N(SiMe3 )2 }2 ]

Lowering the charge of Zintl anions by (element-)organic substituents allows their use as sources of (semi)metal nanostructures in common organic solvents, as realized for group 15 anions or Ge₉ ^4- and Sn₉ ^4- . We developed a new strategy for other anions, using low-coordinate 3d metal complexes as electrophiles. [K(crypt-222)]⁺ salts of (TrBi₃ )^2- anions dissolved in situ in Et₂ O and/or THF when reacted with [Mn(hmds)₂ ]. Work-up afforded soluble [K(crypt-222)]⁺ salts of [{(hmds)₂ Mn}₂ (TlBi₃ )]^2- (in 1), [{(hmds)₂ Mn}₂ (Bi₂ )]^2- (in 2), and [{(hmds)Mn}₄ (Bi₂ )₂ ]^2- (in 3) (crypt-222=4,7,13,16,21,24-hexaoxa-1,10-diazabicyclo[8.8.8]hexacosane; Tr=Ga, In, Tl; hmds=N(SiMe₃ )₂ ), representing rare cases of Zintl clusters with open-shell metal atoms. 1 comprises the first coordination compound of the (TlBi₃ )^2- anion, 2 features a diamond-shaped {Pn₂ M₂ } unit, and 3 is a mixed-valent Mn^I /Mn^II compound. The uncommon electronic structures in 1-3 and magnetic coupling were studied by comprehensive DFT calculations.

Siliconoid Expansion by a Single Germanium Atom through Isolated Intermediates

The growth of (semi-)metal clusters is pivotal for nucleation processes in gaseous and condensed phases. We now report the isolation of intermediates during the expansion of a stable unsaturated silicon cluster (siliconoid) by a single germanium atom through a sequence of substitution, rearrangement and reduction. The reaction of ligato-lithiated hexasilabenzpolarene LiSi6 Tip5 (1Li⋅(thf)2 , Tip=2,4,6-triisopropylphenyl) with GeCl2 ⋅NHC (NHC=1,3-diisopropyl-4,5-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidene) initially yields the product with exohedral germanium(II) functionality, which then inserts into an Si-Si bond of the Si6 scaffold. The concomitant transfer of the chloro functionality from germanium to an adjacent silicon preserves the electron-precise nature of the formed endohedral germylene. Full incorporation of the germanium heteroatom to the Si6 Ge cluster core is finally achieved either by reduction under loss of the coordinating NHC or directly by reaction of 1Li⋅(thf)2 with GeCl2 ⋅1,4-dioxane.

Geometries, electronic structures, and bonding properties of endohedral Group-14 Zintl clusters TM@E10 (TM = Fe, Co, Ni; E = Ge, Sn, Pb)

The geometries, electronic structures, and bonding properties of the title endohedral Zintl clusters have been studied by using ab initio calculations. [Fe@Ge₁₀ ]^4- and [Co@Ge₁₀ ]^3- have D_5h -symmetric pentagonal prismatic structure and [Fe@Sn₁₀ ]^4- adopts the C_2v -symmetric structure as their ground-state structures, whereas all the other clusters possess D_4d bicapped square antiprismatic structures, in consistent with the experimental values when available. Natural bonding orbital and electron localization function disclosed that the negative charges are localized on the central atoms rather than the cages while the TME ionic bonding interactions increase in the order of Ge < Sn < Pb. The energy decomposition analysis revealed that the total bonding energy ∆E_int between central TM and E₁₀ cage is above 150 kcal/mol. The ionic bonding interaction termed as electrostatic interaction ∆E_elstat increases in the order of Ge < Sn < Pb and becomes higher than the covalent bonding interactions termed as total orbital interactions ∆E_orb . Among the total orbital interactions, the π back donations from the TM-d orbitals to the empty cage orbitals consisting of E-p orbitals, the magnitude of which is importantly affected by the cage symmetry, are dominant contributions.

Missing Link in the Growth of Lead-Based Zintl Clusters: Isolation of the Dimeric Plumbaspherene [Cu4Pb22]4

We report here the structure of an endohedral plumbaspherene, [Cu₄Pb₂₂]^4–, the gold analogue of which was previously postulated to be a “missing link” in the growth of larger clusters containing three and four icosahedral subunits. The cluster contains two [Cu₂Pb₁₁]^2– subunits linked through a Cu₂Pb₄ trigonal antiprism. Density functional theory reveals that the striking ability of mixed Pb/coinage metal Zintl clusters to oligomerize and, in the case of Au, to act as a site of nucleation for additional metal atoms, is a direct consequence of their nd¹⁰(n + 1)s⁰ configuration, which generates both a low-lying (n + 1)s-based LUMO and also a high-lying Pb-centered HOMO. Cluster growth and nucleation is then driven by this amphoteric character, allowing the clusters to form donor–acceptor interactions between adjacent icosahedral units or to additional metal atoms.

[Co2@(Ge17Ni)]4-: the first edge-sharing double-cage endohedral germanide

We report here a new double-cage endohedral Ge cluster, [Co₂@(Ge₁₇Ni)]^4-, fused through two [Co@(Ge₉Ni)] moieties with a shared Ni-Ge edge. This ternary Co-Ge-Ni species not only represents the first double-cage example of an 18-vertex Zintl cluster, but also fills in the missing link of the edge fusion model in the double-cage systems.

Heteroallene Capture and Exchange at Functionalised Heptaphosphane Clusters

Despite being known for decades the chemical reactivity of homoatomic seven-atom phosphorus clusters towards small molecules remains largely unexplored. Here, we report that neutral tris(silyl) functionalised heptaphosphane (P7 (SiR3 )3 ) cages are capable of heteroallene capture between the P-Si bonds of the cluster. A range of isocyanates and an isothiocyanate were investigated. In the case of isocyanates, silyl bonding at oxygen or nitrogen is regioselectively directed by the functional group on the isocyanate and substituents on the silyl moiety. Above all, we find that captured isothiocyanate molecules can be exchanged for isocyanate molecules, indicative of small molecule catch and release. Small molecule catch and release at these Zintl-derived clusters reveals their potential application as chemical storage materials or as reusable probes.

Chemi-Inspired Silicon Allotropes-Experimentally Accessible Si9 Cages as Proposed Building Block for 1D Polymers, 2D Sheets, Single-Walled Nanotubes, and Nanoparticles

Numerous studies on silicon allotropes with three-dimensional networks or as materials of lower dimensionality have been carried out in the past. Herein, allotropes of silicon, which are based on structures of experimentally accessible [Si9]4- clusters known as stable anionic molecular species in neat solids and in solution, are predicted. Hypothetical oxidative coupling under the formation of covalent Si-Si bonds between the clusters leads to uncharged two-, one- and zero-dimensional silicon nanomaterials not suffering from dangling bonds. A large variety of structures are derived and investigated by quantum chemical calculations. Their relative energies are in the same range as experimentally known silicene, and some structures are even energetically more favorable than silicene. Significantly smaller relative energies are reached by the insertion of linkers in form of tetrahedrally connected Si atoms. A chessboard pattern built of Si9 clusters bridged by tetrahedrally connected Si atoms represents a two-dimensional silicon species with remarkably lower relative energy in comparison with silicene. We discuss the structural and electronic properties of the predicted silicon materials and their building block nido-[Si9]4- based on density functional calculations. All considered structures are semiconductors. The band structures exclusively show bands of low dispersion, as is typical for covalent polymers.

Synthesis and characterisation of the ternary intermetalloid clusters {M@[As8(ZnMes)4]}3– (M = Nb, Ta) from binary [M@As8]3– precursors

The development of rational synthetic routes to inorganic arsenide compounds is an important goal because these materials are finding applications in many areas of materials science. In this paper, we show that the binary crown clusters [M@As₈]³⁻ (M = Nb, Ta) can be used as synthetic precursors which, when combined with ZnMes₂, generate ternary intermetalloid clusters with 12-vertex cages, {M@[As₈(ZnMes)₄]}³⁻ (M = Nb, Ta). Structural studies are complemented by mass spectrometry and an analysis of the electronic structure using DFT. The synthesis of these clusters presents new opportunities for the construction of As-based nanomaterials.

Two ternary intermetalloid clusters were constructed through binary intermetalloid clusters with a low valent group 12 metal salt. These clusters represent the first example of the structural transformation for intermetalloid clusters.

Electronic structure and bonding in endohedral Zintl clusters

Endohedral Zintl clusters-multi-metallic anionic molecules in which a d-block or f-block metal atom is enclosed by p-block (semi)metal atoms-are very topical in contemporary inorganic chemistry. Not only do they provide insight into the embryonic states of intermetallic compounds and show promise in catalytic applications, they also shed light on the nature of chemical bonding between metal atoms. Over the past two decades, a plethora of endohedral Zintl clusters have been synthesized, revealing a fascinating diversity of molecular architectures. Many different perspectives on the bonding in them have emerged in the literature, sometimes complementary and sometimes conflicting, and there has been no concerted effort to classify the entire family based on a small number of unifying principles. A closer look, however, reveals distinct patterns in structure and bonding that reflect the extent to which valence electrons are shared between the endohedral atom and the cluster shell. We show that there is a much more uniform relationship between the total valence electron count and the structure and bonding patterns of these clusters than previously anticipated. All of the p-block (semi)metal shells can be placed on a ladder of total valence electron count that ranges between 4n+2 (closo deltahedra), 5n (closed, three-bonded polyhedra) and 6n (crown-like structures). Although some structural isomerism can occur for a given electron count, the presence of a central metal cation imposes a preference for rather regular and approximately spherical structures which maximise electrostatic interactions between the metal and the shell. In cases where the endohedral metal has relatively accessible valence electrons (from the d or f shells), it can also contribute its valence electrons to the total electron count of the cluster shell, raising the effective electron count and often altering the structural preferences. The electronic situation in any given cluster is considered from different perspectives, some more physical and some more chemical, in a way that highlights the important point that, in the end, they explain the same situation. This article provides a unifying perspective of bonding that captures the structural diversity across this diverse family of multimetallic clusters.

Germanium-based superatom clusters as excess electron compounds with significant static and dynamic NLO response; a DFT study

Herein, the geometric, electronic, and nonlinear optical properties of excess electron zintl clusters Ge₅AM₃, Ge₉AM₅, and Ge₁₀AM₃ (AM = Li, Na, and K) are investigated. The clusters under consideration demonstrate considerable electronic stability as well as superalkali characteristics. The NBO charge is transferred from the alkali metal to the Ge-atoms. The FMO analysis shows fabulous conductive properties with a significant reduction in SOMO-LUMO gaps (0.79-4.04 eV) as compared with undoped systems. The designed clusters are completely transparent in the deep UV-region and show absorption in the visible and near-IR region. Being excess electron compounds these clusters exhibit remarkable hyperpolarizability response up to 8.99 × 10^-26 esu, where a static second hyperpolarizability (γ _o) value of up to 2.15 × 10^-30 esu was recorded for Ge₉Na₅ superatom clusters. The excitation energy is the main controlling factor for hyperpolarizability as revealed from the two-level model study. The electro-optical Pockel's effect and the second harmonic generation phenomenon (SHG) are used to investigate dynamic nonlinear optical features. At a lower applied frequency (=532 nm), the dynamic hyperpolarizability and second hyperpolarizability values are significantly higher for the studied clusters. Furthermore, for the Ge₉K₅ cluster, the hyper Rayleigh scattering (HRS) increases to 5.03 × 10^-26 esu.

Recent developments in germanium containing clusters in intermetallics and nanocrystals

Multimetallic clusters can be described as building blocks in intermetallics, compounds prepared from all metals and/or semi-metals, and in Zintl phases, a subset of intermetallics containing metals with large differences in electronegativity. In many cases, these intermetallic and Zintl phases provide the first clue for the possibilities of bond formation between metals and semi-metals. Recent advances in multimetallic clusters found in Zintl phases and nanoparticles focusing on Ge with transition metals and semi-metals is presented. Colloidal routes to Ge nanocrystals provide an opportunity for kinetically stabilized Ge-metal and Ge-semi-metal bonding. These routes provide crystalline nanoclusters of Ge, hereafter referred to as nanocrystals, that can be structurally characterized. Compositions of Ge nanocrystals containing transition metals, and the semi-metals, Sb, Bi, and Sn, whose structures have recently been elucidated through EXAFS, will be presented along with potential applications.
