Abstract
Direct conversion of raw materials to fine chemicals is greatly economically influential. We developed a non-expensive cobalt-catalyzed multicomponent carbonylative reaction for the synthesis of γ-aryl carboxylic acid esters from readily available methylarene, ethylene, and CO, which are widely found in multiple FDA-approved drugs.

Abstract
Multicomponent reactions are attracting strong interest because they contribute to develop more efficient synthetic chemistry. Understanding their mechanism at the molecular level is thus an important issue to optimize their operation. The development of integrated experimental and theoretical approaches has very recently emerged as most powerful to achieve this goal. In the wake of our recent investigation of amidine synthesis, we used this approach to explore how an Fe-catalyzed aziridination can lead to an imidazoline when run in acetonitrile. We report that the synthesis of imidazoline by combination of styrene, acetonitrile, an iron catalyst and a nitrene precursor occurs along a new kind of multicomponent reaction. The formation of imidazoline results from acetonitrile interception of a benzyl radical styrene aziridination intermediate within Fe coordination sphere, as opposed to classical nucleophilic opening of the aziridine by a Lewis acid. Comparison of this mechanism to that of amidine formation allows a rationalization of the modes of intermediates trapping by acetonitrile according to the oxidation state Fe active species. The molecular understanding of these processes may help to design other multicomponent reactions.

Abstract
We report herein the development of a palladium-catalyzed, multicomponent synthesis of indolizines. The reaction proceeds via the carbonylative formation of a high energy, mesoionic pyridine-based 1,3-dipole, which can undergo spontaneous cycloaddition with alkynes. Overall, this provides a route to prepare indolizines in a modular fashion from combinations of commercially available or easily generated reagents: 2-bromopyridines, imines and alkynes.

Abstract
We describe here the design of a palladium catalyzed route to generate aryl ketones via the carbonylative coupling of (hetero)arenes and aryl- or vinyl-triflates. In this, the use of the large bite angle Xantphos ligand on palladium provides a unique avenue to balance the activation of the relatively strong C(sp2)–OTf bond with the ultimate elimination of a new class of potent Friedel–Crafts acylating agent: N-acyl pyridinium salts. The latter can be exploited to modulate reactivity and selectivity in carbonylative arene functionalization chemistry, and allow the efficient synthesis of ketones with a diverse array of (hetero)arenes. A palladium catalyzed approach to the overall carbonylative functionalization of arenes to form ketones with aryl- and vinyl-triflates is described.![]()

Abstract
Here we describe a general method for the synthesis of 2,5-diaminoimidazoles, which involves a thermal reaction between α-aminoketones and substituted guanylhydrazines without the need for additives. As one of the few known ways to access the 2,5-diaminoimidazole motif, our method greatly expands the number of reported diaminoimidazoles and further supports our previous observations that these compounds spontaneously adopt the non-aromatic 4(H) tautomer. The reaction works successfully on both cyclic and acyclic amino ketone starting materials, as well as a range of substituted guanylhydrazines. Following optimization, the method was applied to the efficient synthesis of the advanced glycation end product (AGE) methylglyoxal-derived imidazolium crosslink (MODIC). We expect that this method will enable rapid access to a variety of biologically important 2,5-diaminoimidazole-containing products.

Abstract
A palladium-catalyzed multicomponent method for the synthesis of β-lactams from imines, aryl halides, and CO has been developed. This transformation proceeds via two tandem catalytic carbonylation reactions mediated by Pd(PtBu3)2 and provides a route to prepare these products from five separate reagents. A diverse range of polysubstituted β-lactams can be generated by systematic variation of the substrates. This methodology can also be extended to the use of iodo-substituted imines to produce novel spirocyclic β-lactams in good yields and selectivity.

Abstract
Isoindolinones comprise an important class of medicinally active compounds. Herein we report a straightforward functionalization of the isoindolinones with aryl bromides (22 examples) using a Pd(OAc)2/NIXANTPHOS-based catalyst system. Additionally 3-aryl 3-hydroxy isoindolinone derivatives, which exhibit anti-tumor activity, can be accessed via a tandem reaction. Thus, when the arylation product is exposed to air under basic conditions, in situ oxidation takes place to install the 3-hydroxyl group. Furthermore, a tandem arylation/allylic substitution reaction is advanced in which both the arylation and allylic substitution are catalyzed by the same palladium catalyst. Finally, a tandem arylation/alkylation procedure is presented. These tandem reactions enable the synthesis of a variety of structurally diverse isoindolinone derivatives from common starting materials.

Abstract
A palladium-catalyzed approach to intermolecular carbonylative C-H functionalization is described. This transformation is mediated by P(t)Bu3-coordinated palladium catalyst and allows the derivatization of a diverse range of heterocycles, including pyrroles, indoles, imidazoles, benzoxazoles, and furans. Preliminary studies suggest that this reaction may proceed via the catalytic formation of highly electrophilic intermediates. Overall, this provides with an atom-economical and general synthetic route to generate aryl-(hetero)aryl ketones using stable reagents (aryl iodides and CO) and without the typical need to exploit pre-metalated heterocycles in carbonylative coupling chemistry.

Abstract
Multicomponent coupling reactions provide a method to combine several substrates in a single reaction. When coupled with transition-metal catalysis, these reactions can be used to both activate and control the assembly of multiple simple building blocks directly into useful products. This account will describe our work in this area, with a focus on the use of palladium catalysis as a tool to couple imines and CO with other substrates into a range of heterocyclic derivatives in one-step reactions.

Abstract
We describe the palladium-catalyzed multicomponent synthesis of 2-imidazolines. This reaction proceeds via the coupling of imines, acid chlorides and carbon monoxide to form imidazolinium carboxylates, followed by a decarboxylation. Decarboxylation in CHCl3 is found to result in a mixture of imidazolinium and imidazolium salts. However, the addition of benzoic acid suppresses aromatization, and generates the trans-disubstituted imidazolines in good yield. Combining this reaction with subsequent nitrogen deprotection provides an overall synthesis of imidazolines from multiple available building blocks.
