Multilayer Langmuir Film of Monodisperse Au Nanoclusters: Unusual Growth via Bilayers

The assembly of nanomaterials into thin films is an important area in the nanofabrication of novel devices. The monodispersity of nanoparticles plays an essential role in the resulting quality of the assembled mono- and multilayers. Larger polydispersity leads to smaller lateral correlation lengths and smaller domains of aligned nanoparticles, thus resulting in more point and line defects. Perfectly monodisperse nanoparticles should therefore minimize the number of defects in the assembled films. Despite tremendous progress in reducing the polydispersity of nanoparticles, there has been limited research on the assembly of thin films out of perfectly monodisperse nanoclusters. Here, we show a formation of Langmuir films using perfectly monodisperse gold nanoclusters with composition Au₃₂(ⁿBu₃P)₁₂Cl₈ exhibiting a diameter of 1.8 nm. Using both in situ and ex situ small-angle X-ray scattering, we show that the monolayer formed on a Langmuir-Blodgett trough exhibits long-range order. Moreover, after compressing the monolayer, we found that the stress accumulated prior to the monolayer collapse triggers a transition to a short-range order not previously reported. If such monolayer is compressed further, the second layer is not formed as in the case of standard nanoparticles. Instead, a growth of islands by an odd number of layers is observed, leading to a thin film with a structure consisting of two different orientations of the hexagonal lattice. Such anomalous behavior may have implications for the possibilities of thin-film formation.

Excitonic Energy Transfer within InP/ZnS Quantum Dot Langmuir-Blodgett Assemblies

Interparticle energy transfer offers great promise to a diverse range of applications ranging from artificial solar energy harvesting to nanoscale rulers in biology. Here, we assembled InP/ZnS core/shell quantum dot monolayers via the Langmuir-Blodgett technique and studied the effect of ZnS shell thickness on the excitonic energy transfer within these core/shell quantum dots. Three types of InP-based core/shell quantum dot Langmuir-Blodgett assemblies with different ZnS shell thicknesses were assembled. The structural and optical properties of colloidal quantum dots reveal the successful multiple ZnS shell growth, and atomic force microscopy studies show the smoothness of the assembled monolayers. Time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) and fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) studies of the thick-shell QD monolayer reveal narrower lifetime distribution in comparison with the thin-shell QD monolayer. The interparticle excitonic energy transfer was studied by spectrally resolved PL traces, and higher energy transfer was observed for the thin-shell InP/1ZnS QD monolayer. Finally, we calculated the average exciton energy and indicated that the energy transfer induced exciton energy shift decreased significantly from 95 to 27 meV after multiple ZnS shell growth.

Designed Assembly and Integration of Colloidal Nanocrystals for Device Applications

Colloidal nanocrystals have been intensively studied over the past three decades due to their unique properties that originate, in large part, from their nanometer-scale sizes. For applications in electronic and optoelectronic devices, colloidal nanoparticles are generally employed as assembled nanocrystal solids, rather than as individual particles. Consequently, tailoring 2D patterns as well as 3D architectures of assembled nanocrystals is critical for their various applications to micro- and nanoscale devices. Here, recent advances in the designed assembly, film fabrication, and printing/integration methods for colloidal nanocrystals are presented. The advantages and drawbacks of these methods are compared, and various device applications of assembled/integrated colloidal nanocrystal solids are discussed.

Nanoscale and Single-Dot Patterning of Colloidal Quantum Dots

Using an optimized lift-off process we develop a technique for both nanoscale and single-dot patterning of colloidal quantum dot films, demonstrating feature sizes down to ~30 nm for uniform films and a yield of 40% for single-dot positioning, which is in good agreement with a newly developed theoretical model. While first of all presenting a unique tool for studying physics of single quantum dots, the process also provides a pathway toward practical quantum dot-based optoelectronic devices.

25th anniversary article: what can be done with the Langmuir-Blodgett method? Recent developments and its critical role in materials science

The Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique is known as an elegant method for fabrication of well-defined layered structures with molecular level precision. Since its discovery the LB method has made an indispensable contribution to surface science, physical chemistry, materials chemistry and nanotechnology. However, recent trends in research might suggest the decline of the LB method as alternate methods for film fabrication such as layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly have emerged. Is LB film technology obsolete? This review is presented in order to challenge this preposterous question. In this review, we summarize recent research on LB and related methods including (i) advanced design for LB films, (ii) LB film as a medium for supramolecular chemistry, (iii) LB technique for nanofabrication and (iv) LB involving advanced nanomaterials. Finally, a comparison between LB and LbL techniques is made. The latter reveals the crucial role played by LB techniques in basic surface science, current advanced material sciences and nanotechnologies.

Protein-assisted 2D assembly of gold nanoparticles on a polysaccharide surface

Site-specific assembly of gold nanoparticles on a polysaccharide surface was accomplished via a straightforward method exploiting interfacial polymer blends, selective protein adsorption and electrostatic interaction. The method could be useful in further applications due to the universal nature of the utilized phenomena.
