Abstract
A one-shot substitution of all hydrogens at the α,β-positions of saturated cyclic amines was achieved. The key feature of this reaction is the sequential involvement of intra- and intermolecular redox processes. When N,O-acetals obtained through an internal redox process were treated with a catalytic amount of Zn(OTf)2 and an excess amount of benzylidene barbiturates, three key transformations involving intermolecular redox process occurred successively to afford α,β-unsaturated lactams in moderate to good chemical yields.

Abstract
Saturated N-heterocycles are found in numerous bioactive natural products and are prevalent in pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. While there are many methods for their synthesis, each has its limitations, such as scope and functional group tolerance. Herein, we describe a rhodium-catalyzed transfer hydrogenation of pyridinium salts to access N-(hetero)aryl piperidines. The reaction proceeds via a reductive transamination process, involving the initial formation of a dihydropyridine intermediate via reduction of the pyridinium ion with HCOOH, which is intercepted by water and then hydrolyzed. Subsequent reductive amination with an exogenous (hetero)aryl amine affords an N-(hetero)aryl piperidine. This reductive transamination method thus allows for access of N-(hetero)aryl piperidines from readily available pyridine derivatives, expanding the toolbox of dearomatization and skeletal editing.

Abstract
We present a convenient and efficient protocol to synthesize quinolines and quinazolines in one pot under mild conditions. A variety of substituted quinolines were synthesized in good to excellent yields (up to 97% yield) from the dehydrogenative cyclizations of 2-aminoaryl alcohols and ketones catalyzed by readily available Co(OAc)2·4H2O. This cobalt catalytic system also showed high activity in the reactions of 2-aminobenzyl alcohols with nitriles, affording various quinazoline derivatives (up to 95% yield). The present protocol offers an environmentally benign approach for the synthesis of N-heterocycles by employing an earth-abundant cobalt salt under ligand-free conditions.

Abstract
The emerging field of organometallic catalysis has shifted towards research on Earth-abundant transition metals due to their ready availability, economic advantage, and novel properties. In this case, manganese, the third most abundant transition-metal in the Earth's crust, has emerged as one of the leading competitors. Accordingly, a large number of molecularly-defined Mn-complexes has been synthesized and employed for hydrogenation, dehydrogenation, and hydroelementation reactions. In this regard, catalyst design is based on three pillars, namely, metal-ligand bifunctionality, ligand hemilability, and redox activity. Indeed, the developed catalysts not only differ in the number of chelating atoms they possess but also their working principles, thereby leading to different turnover numbers for product molecules. Hence, the critical assessment of molecularly defined manganese catalysts in terms of chelating atoms, reaction conditions, mechanistic pathway, and product turnover number is significant. Herein, we analyze manganese complexes for their catalytic activity, versatility to allow multiple transformations and their routes to convert substrates to target molecules. This article will also be helpful to get significant insight into ligand design, thereby aiding catalysis design.

Abstract
Derivatization of azaarenes can create molecules of biological importance, but reductive functionalization of weakly reactive azaarenes remains a challenge. Here the authors show a dearomative, diastereoselective annulation of azaarenes, via ruthenium(II) reductive catalysis, proceeding with excellent selectivity, mild conditions, and broad substrate and functional group compatibility. Mechanistic studies reveal that the products are formed via hydride transfer-initiated β-aminomethylation and α-arylation of the pyridyl core in the azaarenes, and that paraformaldehyde serves as both the C1-building block and reductant precursor, and the use of Mg(OMe)2 base plays a critical role in determining the reaction chemo-selectivity by lowering the hydrogen transfer rate. The present work opens a door to further develop valuable reductive functionalization of unsaturated systems by taking profit of formaldehyde-endowed two functions.

Abstract
Under transition metal catalyst-free conditions, we herein present a hydride transfer-initiated construction of novel 3-(2-aminomethyl)aryl quinolines from N-isoquinolinium salts and 2-aminobenzaldehydes, proceeding with the merits of operational simplicity, high step and atom efficiency, good substrate and functional group compatibility, and mild conditions. The products are formed by reacting with the isoquinolyl motif as a two-carbon synthon along with the cleavage of its C3-N bond. Given the interesting applications of 3-aryl quinolines, the developed chemistry is anticipated to be further applied to develop new functional products.

Abstract
A facile iridium/graphene-catalyzed methodology providing an efficient synthetic route for C-N bond formation is reported. This catalyst can directly promote the formation of C-N bonds, without pre-activation steps, and without solvents, alkalis and other additives. This protocol provides a direct N-alkylation of amines using a variety of primary and secondary alcohols with good selectivity and excellent yields. Charmingly, the use of diols resulted in intermolecular cyclization of amines, and such products are privileged structures in biologically active compounds. Two examples illustrate the advantages of this catalyst in organic synthesis: the tandem catalysis to synthesize hydroxyzine, and the intermolecular cyclization to synthesize cyclizine. Water is the only by-product, which makes this catalytic process sustainable and environmentally friendly.

Abstract
The incorporation of a coupling step into the reduction of unsaturated systems offers a desirable way for diverse synthesis of functional molecules, but it remains to date a challenge due to the difficulty in controlling the chemoselectivity. Herein, by developing a new heterogeneous iridium catalyst composed of Ir-species (Irδ+) and N-doped SiO2/TiO2 support (Ir/N-SiO2/TiO2), we describe its application in reductive electrophilic mono and dialkylations of quinolines with various 2- or 4-functionalized aryl carbonyls or benzyl alcohols by utilizing renewable formic acid as the reductant. This catalytic transformation offers a practical platform for direct access to a vast range of alkyl THQs, proceeding with excellent step and atom-efficiency, good substrate scope and functional group tolerance, a reusable catalyst and abundantly available feedstocks, and generation of water and carbon dioxide as by-products. The work opens a door to further develop more useful organic transformations under heterogeneous reductive catalysis. By developing a heterogeneous iridium catalyst composed of a N-doped SiO2/TiO2 support and Ir-species (Ir/N-SiO2/TiO2), its application in reductive electrophilic alkylation of quinolines with various aryl carbonyls or benzyl alcohols is presented.![]()

Abstract
Catalytic conversion of ubiquitously distributed but less reactive N-heteroarenes into functional products remains to date a challenge. Here, through an initial pretreatment of N-heteroarenes with alkyl bromide, we describe a syn-selective construction of functional fused heterocycles via iridium catalyzed reductive annulation of N-heteroarenium salts with formaldehyde and cyclic 1,3-diketones or 4-hydroxycoumarins, proceeding with broad substrate scope, good functional group compatibility, readily available feedstocks, and high step and atom efficiency.

Abstract
We disclose a catalytic method for β-C(sp3)-H functionalization of N-alkylamines for the synthesis of enantiomerically enriched β-substituted amines, entities prevalent in pharmaceutical compounds and used to generate different families of chiral catalysts. We demonstrate that a catalyst system comprising of seemingly competitive Lewis acids, B(C6F5)3, and a chiral Mg- or Sc-based complex, promotes the highly enantioselective union of N-alkylamines and α,β-unsaturated compounds. An array of δ-amino carbonyl compounds was synthesized under redox-neutral conditions by enantioselective reaction of a N-alkylamine-derived enamine and an electrophile activated by the chiral Lewis acid co-catalyst. The utility of the approach is highlighted by late-stage β-C-H functionalization of bioactive amines. Investigations in regard to the mechanistic nuances of the catalytic processes are described.

Abstract
Herein, we report pyridine and other similar azaaromatics as efficient biomimetic hydrogen shuttles for a transition-metal-free direct N-alkylation of aryl and heteroaryl amines using a variety of benzylic and straight chain alcohols. Mechanistic studies including deuterium labeling and the isolation of dihydro-intermediates of the benzannulated pyridine confirmed the role of pyridine and a borrowing hydrogen process operating in these reactions. In addition, we have extended this methodology for the development of dehydrogenative synthesis of quinolines and indoles, as well as the transfer hydrogenation of ketones.

Abstract
Herein, we report the first redox-neutral and transition-metal-free β-C(sp3)-H functionalization of cyclic amines via a consecutive intermolecular hydride transfer process. A series of N-aryl pyrrolidines and N-aryl 1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyridines decorated with CF3 and carboxylic ester functionalities are directly accessed in good yields from pyrrolidines and piperidines. This work pushes forward the application of the intermolecular hydride transfer strategy in one-step assembly of molecular complexity.

Abstract
A modular and waste-free strategy for constructing N-substituted cyclic amines via decarboxylative N-alkylation of α-amino acids employing ruthenium- and iron-based catalysts is presented. The reported method allows the synthesis of a wide range of five- and six-membered N-alkylated heterocycles in moderate-to-excellent yields starting from predominantly proline and a broad range of benzyl alcohols, and primary and secondary aliphatic alcohols. Examples using pipecolic acid for the construction of piperidine derivatives, as well as the one-pot synthesis of α-amino nitriles, are also shown.

Abstract
An efficient method for the reductive amination of carbonyl derivatives with ω-amino fatty acids catalysed by an iron complex Fe(CO)4 (IMes) [IMes=1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene] by means of hydrosilylation was developed. A variety of pyrrolidines, piperidines and azepanes were selectively synthesised in moderate-to-excellent yields (36 examples, 47-97 % isolated yield) with a good functional group tolerance.

Abstract
A novel synthesis of pyrrolidine-2-carbaldehydes or tetrahydropyridine-2-carbaldehydes from the cascade reactions of N-arylpiperidines or N-arylazepanes is presented. Mechanistically, the formation of the title compounds involves an unprecedented oxidative ring contraction of inactivated cyclic amines via Cu(OAc)2/KI/O2-promoted oxidative cleavage and reformation of the C-N bond. Interestingly, when PhI(OAc)2 was used in place of KI, 1,1-diacetates of the corresponding aldehydes were directly obtained with good efficiency. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of regioselective C(sp3)-H bond functionalization and C(sp3)-N bond activation of saturated cyclic amines using copper salt and oxygen.
