Siloxides as Supporting Ligands in Uranium(III)-Mediated Small-Molecule Activation

Synthesis, structure and redox properties of single-atom bridged diuranium complexes supported by aryloxides

Single-atom (group 15 and group 16 anions) bridged dimetallic complexes of low oxidation state uranium provide a convenient route to implement multielectron transfer and promote magnetic communication in uranium chemistry, but remain extremely rare. Here we report the synthesis, redox and magnetic properties of N3-, O2-, and S2- bridged diuranium complexes supported by bulky aryloxide ligands. The U(IV)/U(IV) nitride [Cs(THF)8][(U(OAr)3)2(μ-N)], 1 could be prepared and characterized but could not be reduced. Reduction of the neutral U(IV)/U(IV) complexes [(U(OAr)3)2(μ-X)] A (X = O) and B (X = S) led to the isolation and characterization of the U(IV)/U(III) and U(III)/U(III) analogues. Complexes [(K(THF)4)2(U(OAr)2)2(μ-S)2], 5 and [K(2.2.2-cryptand)]2[(U(OAr)3)2(μ-S)], 6 are the first examples of U(III) sulphide bridged complexes. Computational studies and redox properties allow the reactivity of the dimetallic complexes to be related to their electronic structure.

Neutral inverse-sandwich rare-earth metal complexes of the benzene tetraanion

Rare-earth metal complexes of the parent benzene tetraanion and neutral inverse-sandwich rare-earth metal arene complexes have remained elusive. Here, we report the first neutral inverse-sandwich rare-earth metal complexes of the parent benzene tetraanion supported by a monoanionic β-diketiminate (BDI) ligand. Reduction of the trivalent rare-earth metal diiodide precursors (BDI)MI2(THF) (BDI = HC(C(Me)N[C6H3-(3-pentyl)2-2,6])2; M = Y, 1-Y; M = Sm, 1-Sm) in benzene or para-xylene by potassium graphite yielded the neutral inverse-sandwich rare-earth metal arene complexes [(BDI)M(THF) n ]2(μ-η6,η6-arene) (M = Y, Sm; arene = benzene, 2-M; arene = para-xylene, 3-M). Single crystal X-ray diffraction, spectroscopic and magnetic characterization studies, together with density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that these neutral rare-earth metal arene complexes possess an [M3+-(arene)4--M3+] electronic structure with strong metal-arene δ interactions. The arene exchange reactivity shows that 2-Sm has higher stability than 3-Sm. Furthermore, 2-Sm can behave as a four-electron reductant to reduce unsaturated organic substrates. Particularly, while the reaction of 2-Sm with 1,3,5,7-cyclooctatetraene (COT) yielded (BDI)Sm(η8-COT) (4-Sm), 2-Sm reacted with 1,4-diphenylbutadiyne to afford (BDI)Sm(η4-C4Ph2) (5-Sm), the first rare-earth metallacyclopentatriene complex.

Accessing a Highly Reducing Uranium(III) Complex through Cyclometalation

U(IV) cyclometalated complexes have shown rich reactivity, but their low oxidation state analogues still remain rare. Herein, we report the isolation of [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][UIII{N(SiMe3)2}2(κ2-C,N-CH2SiMe2NSiMe3)], 1, from the reduction of [UIII{N(SiMe)2}3] with KC8 and 2.2.2-cryptand at room temperature. Cyclic voltammetry studies demonstrate that 1 has a reduction potential similar to that of the previously reported [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][UII{N(SiMe)2}3] (Epc = -2.6 V versus Fc+/0 and Epc = -2.8 V versus Fc+/0, respectively). Complex 1, indeed, shows similar reducing abilities upon reactions with 4,4'-bipyridine, 2,2'-bipyridine, and 1-azidoadamantane. Interestingly, 1 was also found to be the first example of a mononuclear U(III) complex that is capable of reducing pyridine. In addition, it is shown that a wide variety of substrates can be inserted into the U-C bond, forming new U(III) metallacycles. These results highlight that cyclometalated U(III) complexes can serve as versatile precursors for a broad range of reactivity and for assembling a variety of novel chemical architectures.

A trinuclear metallasilsesquioxane of uranium(III)

The silsesquioxane ligand (iBu)7Si7O9(OH)3 (iBuPOSSH3) is revealed as an attractive system for the assembly of robust polynuclear complexes of uranium(III) and allowed the isolation of the first example of a trinuclear U(III) complex ([U3(iBuPOSS)3]) that exhibits magnetic communication and promotes dinitrogen reduction in the presence of reducing agent.

Accessing five oxidation states of uranium in a retained ligand framework

Understanding and exploiting the redox properties of uranium is of great importance because uranium has a wide range of possible oxidation states and holds great potential for small molecule activation and catalysis. However, it remains challenging to stabilise both low and high-valent uranium ions in a preserved ligand environment. Herein we report the synthesis and characterisation of a series of uranium(II-VI) complexes supported by a tripodal tris(amido)arene ligand. In addition, one- or two-electron redox transformations could be achieved with these compounds. Moreover, combined experimental and theoretical studies unveiled that the ambiphilic uranium-arene interactions are the key to balance the stabilisation of low and high-valent uranium, with the anchoring arene acting as a δ acceptor or a π donor. Our results reinforce the design strategy to incorporate metal-arene interactions in stabilising multiple oxidation states, and open up new avenues to explore the redox chemistry of uranium.

Bonding and Reactivity in Terminal versus Bridging Arenide Complexes of Thorium Acting as ThII Synthons

Thorium redox chemistry is extremely scarce due to the high stability of Th^IV . Here we report two unique examples of thorium arenide complexes prepared by reduction of a Th^IV -siloxide complex in presence of naphthalene, the mononuclear arenide complex [K(OSi(O^t Bu)₃ )₃ Th(η⁶ -C₁₀ H₈ )] (1) and the inverse-sandwich complex [K(OSi(O^t Bu)₃ )₃ Th]₂ (μ-η⁶ ,η⁶ -C₁₀ H₈ )] (2). The electrons stored in these complexes allow the reduction of a broad range of substrates (N₂ O, AdN₃ , CO₂ , HBBN). Higher reactivity was found for the complex 1 which reacts with the diazoolefin IDipp=CN₂ to yield the unexpected Th^IV amidoalkynyl complex 5 via a terminal N-heterocyclic vinylidene intermediate. This work showed that arenides can act as convenient redox-active ligands for implementing thorium-ligand cooperative multielectron transfer and that the reactivity can be tuned by the arenide binding mode.

A versatile strategy for the formation of hydride-bridged actinide-iridium multimetallics

Reaction of the potassium pentamethylcyclopentadienyl iridate tris-hydride K[IrCp*H₃] with UCl₄ and ThCl₄(DME)₂ led to the complete replacement of the halide ligands to generate multimetallic complexes U{(μ-H)₃IrCp*}₄ (1) and Th{[(μ-H₂)(H)IrCp*]₂[(μ-H)₃IrCp*]₂} (2), respectively. These analogues feature a significant discrepancy in hydride bonding modes; 1 contains twelve bridging hydrides while 2 contains ten bridging hydrides and two terminal, Ir-bound hydrides. Use of a U(iii) starting material, UI₃(1,4-dioxane)_1.5, resulted in the octanuclear complex {U[(μ²-H₃)IrCp*]₂[(μ³-H₂)IrCp*]}₂ (3). Computational studies indicate significant bonding character between U/Th and Ir in 1 and 2, with f-orbital involvement in the singly-occupied molecular orbitals of the uranium species 1. In addition, these studies attribute the variation in hydride bonding between 1 and 2 to differences in dispersion effects.

Activation of CS2 with the 2H-Phosphindole Complex to Construct P,S-Polycycles

The activation of CS₂ by the 2H-phosphindole complex with a low-coordinate phosphadiene moiety is reported. The successive hetero-Diels-Alder reaction between 2H-phosphindoles and CS₂ constructs two bridged rings and one spirocycle simultaneously, affording structurally complex P,S-polycyclic products. The two 2H-phosphindoles approach the C═S bond in a head-to-head disposition to minimize steric hindrance. This work reveals the unique reactivity of low-coordinate organophosphorus species and their potential applications in small molecule activation.

Recent advances in cooperative activation of CO2 and N2O by bimetallic coordination complexes or binuclear reaction pathways

The gaseous small molecules, CO₂ and N₂O, play important roles in climate change and ozone layer depletion, and they hold promise as underutilized reagents and chemical feedstocks. However, productive transformations of these heteroallenes are difficult to achieve because of their inertness. In nature, these gases are cycled through ecological systems by metalloenzymes featuring multimetallic active sites that employ cooperative mechanisms. Thus, cooperative bimetallic chemistry is an important strategy for synthetic systems, as well. In this Perspective, recent advances (since 2010) in cooperative activation of CO₂ and N₂O are reviewed, including examples involving s-block, p-block, d-block, and f-block metals and different combinations thereof.

Heterometallic uranium/molybdenum nitride synthesis via partial N-atom transfer

The reaction of a terminal Mo(II) nitride with a U(III) complex yields a heterodimetallic U-Mo nitride which is the first example of a transition metal-capped uranium nitride. The nitride is triply bonded to U(V) and singly bonded to Mo(0) and supports a U-Mo interaction. This compound shows reactivity toward CO oxidation.

Near-infrared C-term MCD spectroscopy of octahedral uranium(V) complexes

C-term magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopy is a powerful method for probing d-d and f-f transitions in paramagnetic metal complexes. However, this technique remains underdeveloped both experimentally and theoretically for studies of U(v) complexes of Oh symmetry, which have been of longstanding interest for probing electronic structure, bonding, and covalency in 5f systems. In this study, C-term NIR MCD of the Laporte forbidden f-f transitions of [UCl6]- and [UF6]- are reported, demonstrating the significant fine structure resolution possible with this technique including for the low energy Γ7 → Γ8 transitions in [UF6]-. The experimental NIR MCD studies were further extended to [U(OC6F5)6]-, [U(CH2SiMe3)6]-, and [U(NC(tBu)(Ph))6]- to evaluate the effects of ligand-type on the f-f MCD fine structure features. Theoretical calculations were conducted to determine the Laporte forbidden f-f transitions and their MCD intensity experimentally observed in the NIR spectra of the U(v) hexahalide complexes, via the inclusion of vibronic coupling, to better understand the underlying spectral fine structure features for these complexes. These spectra and simulations provide an important platform for the application of MCD spectroscopy to this widely studied class of U(v) complexes and identify areas for continued theoretical development.

Strongly Polarized Iridiumδ--Aluminumδ+ Pairs: Unconventional Reactivity Patterns Including CO2 Cooperative Reductive Cleavage

The iridium tetrahydride complex Cp*IrH₄ reacts with a range of isobutylaluminum derivatives of general formula Al(iBu)_x(OAr)_3-x (x = 1, 2) to give the unusual iridium aluminum species [Cp*IrH₃Al(ⁱBu)(OAr)] (1) via a reductive elimination route. The Lewis acidity of the Al atom in complex 1 is confirmed by the coordination of pyridine, leading to the adduct [Cp*IrH₃Al(ⁱBu)(OAr)(Py)] (2). Spectroscopic, crystallographic, and computational data support the description of these heterobimetallic complexes 1 and 2 as featuring strongly polarized Al(III)^δ+-Ir(III)^δ- interactions. Reactivity studies demonstrate that the binding of a Lewis base to Al does not quench the reactivity of the Ir-Al motif and that both species 1 and 2 promote the cooperative reductive cleavage of a range of heteroallenes. Specifically, complex 2 promotes the decarbonylation of CO₂ and AdNCO, leading to CO (trapped as Cp*IrH₂(CO)) and the alkylaluminum oxo ([(iBu)(OAr)Al(Py)]₂(μ-O) (3)) and ureate ({Al(OAr)(ⁱBu)[κ²-(N,O)AdNC(O)NHAd]} (4)) species, respectively. The bridged amidinate species Cp*IrH₂(μ-CyNC(H)NCy)Al(ⁱBu)(OAr) (5) is formed in the reaction of 2 with dicyclohexylcarbodiimine. Mechanistic investigations via DFT support cooperative heterobimetallic bond activation processes.

Counterion Dependence of Dinitrogen Activation and Functionalization by a Diniobium Hydride Anion

We report the synthesis of anionic diniobium hydride complexes with a series of alkali metal cations (Li⁺ , Na⁺ , and K⁺ ) and the counterion dependence of their reactivity with N₂ . Exposure of these complexes to N₂ initially produces the corresponding side-on end-on N₂ complexes, the fate of which depends on the nature of countercations. The lithium derivative undergoes stepwise migratory insertion of the hydride ligands onto the aryloxide units, yielding the end-on bridging N₂ complex. For the potassium derivative, the N-N bond cleavage takes place along with H₂ elimination to form the nitride complex. Treatment of the side-on end-on N₂ complex with Me₃ SiCl results in silylation of the terminal N atom and subsequent N-N bond cleavage along with H₂ elimination, giving the nitride-imide-bridged diniobium complex.

This work highlights the reactivity of Ta–NHC adducts and the aptitude of the NHC motif to transfer from Ta to Rh which is used with profit as an efficient synthetic route to access early/late heterobimetallic complexes.

Small molecule activation by multimetallic uranium complexes supported by siloxide ligands

The synthesis and reactivity of uranium compounds supported by the tris-tert-butoxysiloxide ligand is surveyed. The multiple binding modes of the tert-butoxysiloxide ligand have proven very well suited to stabilize highly reactive homo- and heteropolymetallic complexes of uranium that have shown an unusual high reactivity towards small molecules such as CO2, CS2, chalcogens and azides. Moreover, these ligands have allowed the isolation of dinuclear nitride and oxide bridged complexes of uranium in various oxidation states. The ability of the tris-tert-butoxysiloxide ligands to trap alkali ions in these nitride or oxide complexes leads to unprecedented ligand based and metal based reduction and functionalization of N2, CO, CO2 and H2.

Tuning the structure, reactivity and magnetic communication of nitride-bridged uranium complexes with the ancillary ligands

The U⁴⁺–U⁴⁺ nitride complexes, [NBu₄][{((^tBuO)₃SiO)₃U}₂(μ-N)], [NBu₄]-1, and [NBu₄][((Me₃Si)₂N)₃U}₂(μ-N)], 2, were synthesised by reacting NBu₄N₃ with the U³⁺ complexes, [U(OSi(O^tBu)₃)₂(μ-OSi(O^tBu)₃)]₂ and [U(N(SiMe₃)₂)₃], respectively. Oxidation of 2 with AgBPh₄ gave the U⁴⁺–U⁵⁺ analogue, [((Me₃Si)₂N)₃U}₂(μ-N)], 4. The previously reported methylene-bridged U⁴⁺–U⁴⁺ nitride [Na(dme)₃][((Me₃Si)₂)₂U(μ-N)(μ-κ²-C,N-CH₂SiMe₂NSiMe₃)U(N(SiMe₃)₂)₂] (dme = 1,2-dimethoxyethane), [Na(dme)₃]-3, provided a versatile precursor for the synthesis of the mixed-ligand U⁴⁺–U⁴⁺ nitride complex, [Na(dme)₃][((Me₃Si)₂N)₃U(μ-N)U(N(SiMe₃)₂)(OSi(O^tBu)₃)], 5. The reactivity of the 1–5 complexes was assessed with CO₂, CO, and H₂. Complex [NBu₄]-1 displays similar reactivity to the previously reported heterobimetallic complex, [Cs{((^tBuO)₃SiO)₃U}₂(μ-N)], [Cs]-1, whereas the amide complexes 2 and 4 are unreactive with these substrates. The mixed-ligand complexes 3 and 5 react with CO and CO₂ but not H₂. The nitride complexes [NBu₄]-1, 2, 4, and 5 along with their small molecule activation products were structurally characterized. Magnetic data measured for the all-siloxide complexes [NBu₄]-1 and [Cs]-1 show uncoupled uranium centers, while strong antiferromagnetic coupling was found in complexes containing amide ligands, namely 2 and 5 (with maxima in the χ versus T plot of 90 K and 55 K). Computational analysis indicates that the U(μ-N) bond order decreases with the introduction of oxygen-based ligands effectively increasing the nucleophilicity of the bridging nitride.

A reactive coordinatively saturated Mo(iii) complex: exploiting the hemi-lability of tris(tert-butoxy)silanolate ligands

Hemilabile tris(tert-butoxy)silanolate ligands allow stabilizing a mononuclear octahedral Mo(iii) complex without quenching its reactivity towards small molecules (N₂, CO₂, N₂O).

Coordinatively unsaturated Mo(iii) complexes have been identified as highly reactive species able to activate dinitrogen without the need for a sacrificial reducing agent. Here, we report a coordinatively saturated octahedral Mo(iii) complex stabilized by κ²-tris(tert-butoxy)silanolate ligands, which is yet highly reactive towards dinitrogen and small molecules. The combined high stability and activity are ascribed to the dual binding mode of the tris(tert-butoxy)silanolate ligands that allow unlocking a coordination site in the presence of reactive small molecules to promote their activation at low temperatures.

Trapping of a Highly Bent and Reduced Form of 2-Phosphaethynolate in a Mixed-Valence Diuranium-Triamidoamine Complex

The chemistry of 2-phosphaethynolate is burgeoning, but there remains much to learn about this ligand, for example its reduction chemistry is scarce as this promotes P-C-O fragmentations or couplings. Here, we report that reduction of [U(Tren^TIPS )(OCP)] (Tren^TIPS =N(CH₂ CH₂ NSiPrⁱ ₃ )₃ ) with KC₈ /2,2,2-cryptand gives [{U(Tren^TIPS )}₂ {μ-η² (OP):η² (CP)-OCP}][K(2,2,2-cryptand)]. The coordination mode of this trapped 2-phosphaethynolate is unique, and derives from an unprecedented highly reduced and highly bent form of this ligand with the most acute P-C-O angle in any complex to date (P-C-O ∡ ≈127°). The characterisation data support a mixed-valence diuranium(III/IV) formulation, where backbonding from uranium gives a highly reduced form of the P-C-O unit that is perhaps best described as a uranium-stabilised OCP^2-. radical dianion. Quantum chemical calculations reveal that this gives unprecedented carbene character to the P-C-O unit, which engages in a weak donor-acceptor interaction with one of the uranium ions.

Applications of boroxide ligands in supporting small molecule activation by U(iii) and U(iv) complexes

The boroxide ligand [OBAr2]- (Ar = Mes, Trip) is shown to be able to support both UIII and UIV centres for the first time. The synthesis and structures of homoleptic and heteroleptic UIII and UIV complexes are reported. The UX3 complex with larger substituents, [U(OBTrip2)3]2, exhibits greater thermal stability compared to less encumbered [U(OBMes2)3]2 but reacts with a smaller range of the small molecules tested to date. Initial studies on their capacity to participate in small molecule chemistry show that dark purple [U(OBMes2)3]2 binds and/or reductively activates a variety of small molecules such as pyridine-oxide, triphenylphosphineoxide, sulfur, and dicyclohexylcarbodiimide. While [U(OBMes2)3]2 shows no reaction with CO or CO2, [U(OBTrip2)3]2 is oxidised by both, in the former case forming [U(OBTrip2)4], and in the latter case forming a small quantity of the structurally characterised μ-carbonate product [(μ-CO3){U(OBTrip2)3}2].

Facile N-functionalization and strong magnetic communication in a diuranium(v) bis-nitride complex

Uranium nitride complexes are of high interest because of their ability to effect dinitrogen reduction and functionalization and to promote magnetic communication, but studies of their properties and reactivity remain rare. Here we have prepared in 73% yield the diuranium(v) bis-nitride complex [K₂{[U(OSi(O ^t Bu)₃)₃]₂(μ-N)₂}], 4, from the thermal decomposition of the nitride-, azide-bridged diuranium(iv) complex [K₂{[U(OSi(O ^t Bu)₃)₃]₂(μ-N)(μ-N₃)}], 3. The bis-nitride 4 reacts in ambient conditions with 1 equiv. of CS₂ and 1 equiv. of CO₂ resulting in N-C bond formation to afford the diuranium(v) complexes [K₂{[U(OSi(O ^t Bu)₃)₃]₂(μ-N)(μ-S)(μ-NCS)}], 5 and [K₂{[U(OSi(O ^t Bu)₃)₃]₂(μ-N)(μ-O)(μ-NCO)}], 6, respectively. Both nitrides in 4 react with CO resulting in oxidative addition of CO to one nitride and CO cleavage by the second nitride to afford the diuranium(iv) complex [K₂{[U(OSi(O ^t Bu)₃)₃]₂(μ-CN)(μ-O)(μ-NCO)}], 7. Complex 4 also effects the remarkable oxidative cleavage of H₂ in mild conditions to afford the bis-imido bridged diuranium(iv) complex [K₂{[U(OSi(O ^t Bu)₃)₃]₂(μ-NH)₂}], 8 that can be further protonated to afford ammonia in 73% yield. Complex 8 provides a good model for hydrogen cleavage by metal nitrides in the Haber-Bosch process. The measured magnetic data show an unusually strong antiferromagnetic coupling between uranium(v) ions in the complexes 4 and 6 with Neel temperatures of 77 K and 60 K respectively, demonstrating that nitrides are attractives linkers for promoting magnetic communication in uranium complexes.

Carbon dioxide reduction by dinuclear Yb(ii) and Sm(ii) complexes supported by siloxide ligands

Low-coordinate dinuclear lanthanide complexes supported by siloxides effect the reduction of carbon dioxide to both carbonate and oxalate, but the cooperative binding of CO2 to the two Ln(ii) cations in the dimer favours oxalate formation.

Catalytic regeneration of a Th-H bond from a Th-O bond through a mild and chemoselective carbonyl hydroboration

Here we present an unprecedented chemoselective hydroboration for aldehydes and ketones catalysed by actinides. The reaction features a very low catalyst loading (0.1-0.004 mol%) and quantitative product formation in less than 15 minutes, at room temperature. Thermodynamic and kinetic studies including stoichiometric and labeling studies with deuterated pinacolborane allow us to propose a plausible mechanism for this remarkable catalytic regeneration of a Th-H bond via carbonyl hydroboration.

Uranium(III)-carbon multiple bonding supported by arene δ-bonding in mixed-valence hexauranium nanometre-scale rings

Despite the fact that non-aqueous uranium chemistry is over 60 years old, most polarised-covalent uranium-element multiple bonds involve formal uranium oxidation states IV, V, and VI. The paucity of uranium(III) congeners is because, in common with metal-ligand multiple bonding generally, such linkages involve strongly donating, charge-loaded ligands that bind best to electron-poor metals and inherently promote disproportionation of uranium(III). Here, we report the synthesis of hexauranium-methanediide nanometre-scale rings. Combined experimental and computational studies suggest overall the presence of formal uranium(III) and (IV) ions, though electron delocalisation in this Kramers system cannot be definitively ruled out, and the resulting polarised-covalent U = C bonds are supported by iodide and δ-bonded arene bridges. The arenes provide reservoirs that accommodate charge, thus avoiding inter-electronic repulsion that would destabilise these low oxidation state metal-ligand multiple bonds. Using arenes as electronic buffers could constitute a general synthetic strategy by which to stabilise otherwise inherently unstable metal-ligand linkages.

Reduction of a Cerium(III) Siloxide Complex To Afford a Quadruple-Decker Arene-Bridged Cerium(II) Sandwich

Organometallic multi-decker sandwich complexes containing f-elements remain rare, despite their attractive magnetic and electronic properties. The reduction of the Ce^III siloxide complex, [KCeL₄ ] (1; L=OSi(OtBu)₃ ), with excess potassium in a THF/toluene mixture afforded a quadruple-decker arene-bridged complex, [K(2.2.2-crypt)]₂ [{(KL₃ Ce)(μ-η⁶ :η⁶ -C₇ H₈ )}₂ Ce] (3). The structure of 3 features a [Ce(C₇ H₈ )₂ ] sandwich capped by [KL₃ Ce] moieties with a linear arrangement of the Ce ions. Structural parameters, UV/Vis/NIR data, and DFT studies indicate the presence of Ce^II ions involved in δ bonding between the Ce cations and toluene dianions. Complex 3 is a rare lanthanide multi-decker complex and the first containing non-classical divalent lanthanide ions. Moreover, oxidation of 1 by AgOTf (OTf=O₃ SCF₃ ) yielded the Ce^IV complex, [CeL₄ ] (2), showing that siloxide ligands can stabilize Ce in three oxidation states.
