A Two-Coordinate Palladium Complex with Two Dialkylphosphinyl Ligands

Trialkylphosphines Having a Bulky Phosphacyclopentane Backbone: Structural and Redox Properties Depending on the Exocyclic Alkyl Groups and EPR Observation of a Persistent Trialkylphosphine Radical Cation

Bulky phosphines and their redox properties have received increased attention in the view of useful auxiliary ligands for transition metal catalysts and Lewis-base components of frustrated Lewis pairs for chemical transformations. Herein we report the synthesis, structure, and properties of a series of trialkylphosphines 2R (R = methyl, ethyl, isopropyl, tert-butyl, 1-adamantyl) that possess the bulky 2,2,5,5-tetrakis(trimethylsilyl)-1-phosphacyclopentane as a structural backbone. Among these phosphines, 2Ad, which contains an adamantyl moiety, has a very large buried volume (%V_bur) for a trialkylphosphine (62.0) and shows a quasi-reversible oxidative wave at a lower oxidation potential (-0.12 V in CH₂Cl₂, vs ferrocene/ferrocenium couple) by cyclic voltammetry. The reaction of 2Ad with AgPF₆ afforded a cationic silver aquo complex [Ag(2Ad)(H₂O)]⁺[PF₆]^-, whereas the reaction with NOSbF₆ gave a persistent phosphine radical cation [2Ad]^•+. Based on the EPR spectra and DFT studies, the spin and positive charge of [2Ad]^•+ are localized on the phosphorus atom.

The Charge Transfer Approach to Heavier Main-Group Element Radicals in Transition-Metal Complexes

The Co^II and Fe^II complexes 1Co and 1Fe with a coordinated phosphorus radical were easily obtained through a charge-transfer approach from the M^I precursors LM^I (tol) (M=Co, Fe; L=CH(MeC=NDipp)₂ , Dipp=2,6-iPr₂ C₆ H₃ ) to the diazafluorenylidene-substituted phosphaalkene 1. Structural, magnetic, and computational studies on 1Co and 1Fe indicate a weak antiferromagnetic interaction between the high-spin M^II ion and the phosphorus radical, resulting in a triplet and quartet ground state, respectively. Complexes 1Co and 1Fe are the first examples of phosphorus-radical-coordinated transition-metal complexes synthesized by charge transfer, providing a new approach to access radicals of heavier main-group elements.

Persistent four-coordinate iron-centered radical stabilized by π-donation

Dinuclear iron carbonyl complex 2, which contains an elongated unsupported Fe-Fe bond, was synthesized by the reaction between Fe₂(CO)₉ and phosphinyl radical 1. Thermal Fe-Fe bond homolysis led to the generation of a four-coordinate carbonyl-based iron-centered radical, 3, which is stabilized by π-donation. Complex 3 exhibited high reactivity toward organic radicals to form diamagnetic five-coordinate Fe(ii) complexes.

Reactions of a persistent phosphinyl radical/diphosphine with heteroallenes

The persistent phosphinyl radical, (H₂C)₂(NDipp)₂P˙, formed from the diphosphane [(H₂C)₂(NDipp)₂P]₂, was reacted with three heteroallenes.

Substitution effects on the formation of T-shaped palladium carbene and thioketone complexes from Li/Cl carbenoids

The preparation of palladium thioketone and T-shaped carbene complexes by treatment of thiophosphoryl substituted Li/Cl carbenoids with a Pd(0) precursor is reported. Depending on the steric demand, the anion-stabilizing ability of the silyl moiety (by negative hyperconjugation effects) and the remaining negative charge at the carbenic carbon atom, isolation of a three-coordinate, T-shaped palladium carbene complex is possible. In contrast, insufficient charge stabilization results in the transfer of the sulfur of the thiophosphoryl moiety and thus in the formation of a thioketone complex. While the thioketones are stable compounds the carbene complexes are revealed to be highly reactive and decompose under elimination of Pd metal. Computational studies revealed that both complexes are formed by a substitution mechanism. While the ketone turned out to be the thermodynamically favored product, the carbene is kinetically favored and thus preferentially formed at low reaction temperatures.
