Cumulenes and heterocumulenes with three or more cumulative multiple bonds are usually reactive species that serve as valuable building blocks for more complex molecules but tend to isomerize or cyclize and therefore are difficult to isolate. Using a mild ligand exchange reaction at the carbon in α-metalated ylides, we have now succeeded in the synthesis and gram-scale isolation of the elusive cyanoketenyl anion [NC3O]-. Despite its assumed cumulene-like structure and the delocalization of the negative charge across the whole 5-atom molecule, it features a bent geometry with a nucleophilic central carbon atom. Computational studies reveal an ambiguous bonding situation in the anion, which can be illustrated only by a combination of different resonance structures. Nonetheless, the anion features remarkable stability, thus allowing the storage of its potassium-crown ether salt and its application as a highly functional synthetic building block. The cyanoketenyl anion readily reacts with a series of small molecules to form more complex organic compounds, including industrially valuable compounds such as cyanoacetate. This work demonstrated that reactive species can be generated by novel synthesis methods and open up atom-economic pathways to complex compounds from small abundant molecules.

From a mercury(II) bis(yldiide) complex to actinide yldiides

The bis(yldiide) mercury complex, (L-Hg-L) [L = C(PPh3)P(S)Ph2], is prepared from the corresponding potassium yldiide and used to access the first substituted yldiide actinide complexes [(C5Me5)2An(L)(Cl)] (An = U, Th) via salt metathesis. Compared to previously reported phosphinocarbene complexes, the complexes exhibit long actinide-carbon distances, which can be explained by the strong polarization of the π-electron density toward carbon.

Phosphinoyl-Substituted Ketenyl Anions: Synthesis and Substituent Effects on the Structural Properties

Ketenyl anions are versatile intermediates in synthetic chemistry and have recently become accessible as isolable reagents from metalated ylides by exchange of the phosphine with CO. Herein, we report on a systematic study of substituent effects on the structure and bonding situation in ketenyl anions. A series of phosphinoyl-substituted ketenyl anions {[R2P(X)CCO]- with X = O, NTol, S, Se} were prepared by carbonylation of the corresponding yldiides and isolated as their corresponding potassium salts. NMR and IR spectroscopic analyses together with computational studies demonstrate that the more electron-withdrawing oxo- and iminophosphinoyl substituents increase the s-character in the bond to the ketene moiety and hence the ynolate character of the anion. This trend is particularly seen in solution, whereas the solid-state properties are influenced by packing effects affecting the bonding situation.

Selectivity Control of the Ligand Exchange at Carbon in α-Metallated Ylides as a Route to Ketenyl Anions

α-Metallated ylides have recently been reported to undergo phosphine by CO exchange at the ylidic carbon atom to form isolable ketenyl anions. Systematic studies on the tosyl-substituted yldiides, R3 P=C(M)Ts (M=Li, Na, K), now reveal that carbonylation may lead to a competing metal salt (MTs) elimination. This side-reaction can be controlled by the choice of phosphine, metal cation, solvent and co-ligands, thus enabling the selective isolation of the ketenyl anion [Ts-CCO]M (2-M). Complexation of 2-Na by crown ether or cryptand allowed structure elucidation of the first free ketenyl anion [Ts-CCO]- , which showed an almost linear Ts-C-C linkage indicative for a pronounced ynolate character. However, DFT studies support a high charge at the ketenyl carbon atom, which is reflected in the selective carbon-centered reactivity. Overall, the present study provides important information on the selectivity control of ketenyl anion formation which will be crucial for future applications.

Computer-Driven Development of Ylide Functionalized Phosphines for Palladium-Catalyzed Hiyama Couplings

Palladium-catalyzed couplings of silicon enolates with aryl electrophiles are of great synthetic utility, but often limited to expensive bromide substrates. A comparative experimental study confirmed that none of the established ligand systems allows to couple inexpensive aryl chlorides with α-trimethylsilyl alkylnitriles. In contrast, ylide functionalized phosphines (YPhos) led to encouraging results. A statistical model was developed that correlates the reaction yields with ligand features. It was employed to predict catalyst structures with superior performance. With this cheminformatics approach, YPhos ligands were tailored specifically to the demands of Hiyama couplings. The newly synthesized ligands displayed record-setting activities, enabling the elusive coupling of aryl chlorides with α-trimethylsilyl alkyl nitriles. The preparative utility of the catalyst system was demonstrated by the synthesis of pharmaceutically meaningful α-aryl alkylnitriles, α-arylcarbonyls and biaryls.

From a Fluorenyl Substituted Ylide-Functionalized Phosphine to a Neutral Phosphide via P-C Bond Cleavage

Bulky ylide-substituted phosphines have recently found application as potent ligands in homogeneous catalysis. The attempted synthesis of the ylide-substituted fluorenylphosphine Y_Ph P(Cy)Flu [Y_Ph =Cy₃ P(Ph)C; Flu=9-methylfluorenyl] now resulted in the unexpected elimination of 9-methylenefluorene during the deprotonation step of the intermediary α-phosphino phosphonium salt to yield the secondary ylide-substituted phosphine Y_Ph P(Cy)H. This phosphine underwent formal H₂ elimination under basic conditions to form a cyclic phosphonium ylide with a P-C-P-C four-membered ring via deprotonation of one cyclohexyl group of the PCy₃ moiety. Upon coordination to transition metals the secondary ylidylphosphine forms a neutral phosphide ligand by shift of the proton into the ylide-backbone and formation of zwitterionic metal complexes.

Thiophosphinoyl-Tethered Ylide-Substituted Heavier Carbenes: Synthesis, Structures and Stabilities

The synthesis and structure analysis of a series of mono and diylide-substituted tetrylenes of type YEX and Y₂ E (E=Ge, Sn, Pb; X=Cl or Br) using a thiophosphinoyl-tethered metallated ylide (Y=Ph₂ P(S)-C-P(pip)Ph₂ with pip=piperidyl) is reported, amongst the first ylide-substituted plumbylenes. The tetrylenes feature distinct trends in the spectroscopic and structural properties of the ylide ligand with increasing atomic number of the tetrel element. For instance, an increasingly high-field shifted signal for the thiophosphinoyl group is observed in the ³¹ P{¹ H} NMR spectrum as a consequence of the increasing polarity of the element-carbon bond, which likewise results in a shortening of the ylidic C-P bond in the solid-state structure. The diylidyltetrylenes are unstable towards transylidation forming the mono(ylide)tetrylenes when treated with the tetrel dihalides according to the stability trend: Y₂ Pb<Y₂ Sn<Y₂ Ge<YPbBr<YSnCl<YGeCl. Starting from the monoylide-substituted chlorotertrylenes the first unsymmetrical diylidyltetrylenes of type YEY' can be accessed, whose solid-state structures revealed that not the C-E but the S-E bond to the thiophosphinoyl group is most affected by the second ylide substituent.

Transition metal-free ketene formation from carbon monoxide through isolable ketenyl anions

The capacity of transition metals to bind and transform carbon monoxide (CO) is critical to its use in many chemical processes as a sustainable, inexpensive C1 building block. By contrast, only few s- and p-block element compounds bind and activate CO, and conversion of CO into useful carbonyl-containing organic compounds in such cases remains elusive. We report that metalated phosphorus ylides provide facile access to ketenyl anions ([RC=C=O]^-) by phosphine displacement with CO. These anions are very stable and storable reagents with a distinctive electronic structure between that of the prototypical ketene (H₂C=C=O) and that of ethynol (HC≡C-OH). Nonetheless, the ketenyl anions selectively react with a range of electrophiles at the carbon atom, thus offering high-yielding and versatile access to ketenes and related compounds.

Formation of exceptional monomeric YPhos-PdCl2 complexes with high activities in coupling reactions

The use of well-defined palladium(ii) complexes as precatalysts for C-X cross-coupling reactions has improved the use of palladium catalysts in organic synthesis including large-scale processes. Whereas sophisticated Pd(ii) precursors have been developed in the past years to facilitate catalyst activation as well as the handling of systems with more advanced monophosphine ligands, we herein report that simple PdCl₂ complexes function as efficient precatalysts for ylide-substituted phosphines (YPhos). These complexes are readily synthesized from PdCl₂ sources and form unprecedented monomeric PdCl₂ complexes without the need for any additional coligand. Instead, these structures are stabilized through a unique bonding motif, in which the YPhos ligands bind to the metal through the adjacent phosphine and ylidic carbon site. DFT calculations showed that these bonds are both dative interactions with the stronger interaction originating from the electron-rich phosphine donor. This bonding mode leads to a remarkable stability even towards air and moisture. Nonetheless, the complexes readily form monoligated LPd(0) complexes and thus the active palladium(0) species in coupling reactions. Accordingly, the YPhos-PdCl₂ complexes serve as highly efficient precatalysts for a series of C-C and C-X coupling reactions. Despite their simplicity they can compete with the efficiency of more complex and less stable precatalysts.

Reaction of lithium hexamethyldisilazide (LiHMDS) with water at ultracold conditions

Alkali metal amides are highly reactive reagents that are broadly applied as strong bases in organic synthesis. Here, we use a combined helium nanodroplet IR spectroscopic and theoretical (DFT calculation) study to show that the reaction of the model compound lithium hexamethyldisilazide (LiHMDS) with water is close to barrierless even at ultra-cold conditions. Upon complex formation of dimeric (LiHMDS)₂ with water in helium nanodroplets as ultra-cold nano-reactors (0.37 K) we observed the reaction product (LiOH)₂(HMDS)₂. This can be rationalized as aggregation induced reation upon stepwise addition of water. With increasing water partial pressure, only the product (LiOH)₂(HMDS)₂ is observed experimentally. This implies that the large interaction energy (69 kJ mol^-1) of (LiHMDS)₂ with water is sufficient to overcome the follow-up reaction barriers, in spite of the rapid cooling rates in He nanodroplets.

From Stable PH-Ylides to α-Carbanionic Phosphines as Ligands for Zwitterionic Catalysts

Although ylides are commonly used reagents in organic synthesis, the parent methylphosphine MePH2 only exists in its phosphine form in the condensed phase. Its ylide tautomer H3 P+ -CH2 - is considerably higher in energy. Here, we report on the formation of bis(sulfonyl)methyl-substituted phosphines of the type (RO2 S)2 C(H)-PR2, which form stable PH ylides under ambient conditions, amongst the first examples of an acyclic phosphine which only exists in its PH ylide form. Depending on the exact substitution pattern the phosphines form an equilibrium between the PH ylide and the phosphine form or exist as one of both extremes. These phosphines were found to be ideal starting systems for the facile formation of α-carbanionic phosphines. The carbanion-functionalization leads to a switch from electron-poor to highly electron-rich phosphines with strong donor abilities and high basicities. Thus, the phosphines readily react with different electrophiles exclusively at the phosphorus atom and not at the carbanionic center. Furthermore, the anionic nature of the phosphines allows the formation of zwitterionic complexes as demonstrated by the isolation of a gold(I) complex with a cationic metal center. The cationic gold center allows for catalytic activity in the hydroamination of alkyne without requiring a further activation step.

Tuning Ruthenium Carbene Complexes for Selective P-H Activation through Metal-Ligand Cooperation

The use of iminophosphoryl‐tethered ruthenium carbene complexes to activate secondary phosphine P−H bonds is reported. Complexes of type [(p‐cymene)‐RuC(SO₂Ph)(PPh₂NR)] (with R = SiMe₃ or 4‐C₆H₄−NO₂) were found to exhibit different reactivities depending on the electronics of the applied phosphine and the substituent at the iminophosphoryl moiety. Hence, the electron‐rich silyl‐substituted complex undergoes cyclometallation or shift of the imine moiety after cooperative activation of the P−H bond across the M=C linkage, depending on the electronics of the applied phosphine. Deuteration experiments and computational studies proved that cyclometallation is initiated by the activation process at the M=C bond and triggered by the high electron density at the metal in the phosphido intermediates. Consistently, replacement of the trimethylsilyl (TMS) group by the electron‐withdrawing 4‐nitrophenyl substituent allowed the selective cooperative P−H activation to form stable activation products.

Synthesis, Crystal and Electronic Structures of a Thiophosphinoyl- and Amino-Substituted Metallated Ylide

α-Metallated ylides have revealed themselves to be versatile reagents for the introduction of ylide groups. Herein, we report the synthesis of the thiophosphinoyl and piperidyl (Pip) substituted α-metallated ylide [Ph2 (Pip)P=C-P(S)Ph2 ]M (M=Li, Na, K) through a four-step synthetic procedure starting from diphenylmethylphosphine sulfide. Metallation of the ylide intermediate was successfully accomplished with different alkali metal bases delivering the lithium, sodium and potassium salts, the latter isolable in high yields. Structure analyses of the lithium and potassium compounds in the solid state with and without crown ether revealed different aggregates (monomer, dimer and hexamer) with the metals coordinated by the thiophosphoryl moiety and ylidic carbon atom. Although the piperidyl group does not coordinate to the metal, it significantly contributes to the stability of the yldiide by charge delocalization through negative hyperconjugation.

Single‐Site and Cooperative Bond Activation Reactions with Ylide‐Functionalized Tetrylenes: A Computational Study

Due to their transition metal‐like behavior divalent group 14 compounds bear huge potential for their application in bond activation reactions and catalysis. Here we report on detailed computational studies on the use of ylide‐substituted tetrylenes in the activation of dihydrogen and phenol. A series of acyclic and cyclic ylidyltetrylenes featuring various α‐substituents with different σ‐ and π‐donating capabilities have been investigated which demonstrate that particularly π‐accepting boryl groups lead to beneficial properties and low barriers for single‐site activation reactions, above all in the case of silylenes. In contrast, for the thermodynamically more stable germylenes and stannylenes an alternative mechanism involving the active participation of the ylide ligand in the E−H bond (E=H or PhO) activation process by addition across the element carbon linkage was found to be energetically favored. Furthermore, the boryl substituted tetrylenes allowed for a further activation pathway involving the active participation of the boron element bond. These cooperative mechanisms are especially attractive for the heavier cyclic ylidyltetrylenes in which the loss of the protonated ylide group is prevented due to the cyclic framework. Overall, the present studies suggest that cyclic ylide‐substituted germylenes and stannylenes bear huge potential for cooperative bond activations at mild conditions which should be experimentally addressed in the future.

Au⋅⋅⋅H-C Hydrogen Bonds as Design Principle in Gold(I) Catalysis

Secondary ligand-metal interactions are decisive in many catalytic transformations. While arene-gold interactions have repeatedly been reported as critical structural feature in many high-performance gold catalysts, we herein report that these interactions can also be replaced by Au⋅⋅⋅H-C hydrogen bonds without suffering any reduction in catalytic performance. Systematic experimental and computational studies on a series of ylide-substituted phosphines featuring either a PPh3 (Ph YPhos) or PCy3 (Cy YPhos) moiety showed that the arene-gold interaction in the aryl-substituted compounds is efficiently compensated by the formation of Au⋅⋅⋅H-C hydrogen bonds. The strongest interaction is found with the C-H moiety next to the onium center, which due to the polarization results in remarkably strong interactions with the shortest Au⋅⋅⋅H-C hydrogen bonds reported to date. Calorimetric studies on the formation of the gold complexes further confirmed that the Ph YPhos and Cy YPhos ligands form similarly stable complexes. Consequently, both ligands showed the same catalytic performance in the hydroamination, hydrophenoxylation and hydrocarboxylation of alkynes, thus demonstrating that Au⋅⋅⋅H-C hydrogen bonds are equally suited for the generation of highly effective gold catalysts than gold-arene interactions. The generality of this observation was confirmed by a comparative study between a biaryl phosphine ligand and its cyclohexyl-substituted derivative, which again showed identical catalytic performance. These observations clearly support Au⋅⋅⋅H-C hydrogen bonds as fundamental secondary interactions in gold catalysts, thus further increasing the number of design elements that can be used for future catalyst construction.

Ylide-Substituted Phosphines with a Cyclic Ylide-Backbone: Angle Dependence of the Donor Strength

Ylide-substituted phosphines (YPhos) have been shown to be highly electron-rich and efficient ligands in a variety of palladium catalyzed transformations. Here, the synthesis and characterization of novel YPhos ligands containing a cyclic backbone architecture are reported. The ligands are easily synthesized from a cyclic phosphonium salt and the chlorophosphines Cy2PCl (L1) and Cy(FluMe)PCl (L2, with FluMe = 9-methylfluorenyl) and were characterized in both solution and solid states. The smaller PCy2-substituted ligand, L1, readily formed the biscoordinate L1 2 Pd species when treated with Pd2(dba)3 and showed no activity in palladium-catalyzed amination reactions even when applied as defined palladium(II) η3-allyl, t-Bu-indenyl, or cinnamyl precursors. Bulkier fluorenyl-substituted ligand L2 similarly was inactive, despite its ability to form the stable monophosphine complex L2·Pd(dba). Assessment of the electronic properties by experimental and computational methods revealed that L1 and L2 are considerably less electron-rich than previously synthesized YPhos ligands. This was shown to be the result of the small P-C-S bond angle, which is sterically enforced due to the cyclic nature of the backbone. Density functional theory calculations revealed that the small angle results in an increased s-character of the lone pair at the ylidic carbon atom and leads to a polarization of the C-P bond toward the carbon atom, thus decreasing the electron density at the phosphorus atom. The results demonstrate the tunability of the donor strength of YPhos ligands by modification of the ligand backbone beyond simple changes of the substitution pattern and are thus important for future ligand design, with a careful balance of many factors to be considered to achieve catalytic activity.

Coupling of Reformatsky Reagents with Aryl Chlorides Enabled by Ylide-Functionalized Phosphine Ligands

The coupling of aryl chlorides with Reformatsky reagents is a desirable strategy for the construction of α‐aryl esters but has so far been substantially limited in the substrate scope due to many challenges posed by various possible side reactions. This limitation has now been overcome by the tailoring of ylide‐functionalized phosphines to fit the requirements of Negishi couplings. Record‐setting activities were achieved in palladium‐catalyzed arylations of organozinc reagents with aryl electrophiles using a cyclohexyl‐YPhos ligand bearing an ortho‐tolyl‐substituent in the backbone. This highly electron‐rich, bulky ligand enables the use of aryl chlorides in room temperature couplings of Reformatsky reagents. The reaction scope covers diversely functionalized arylacetic and arylpropionic acid derivatives. Aryl bromides and chlorides can be converted selectively over triflate electrophiles, which permits consecutive coupling strategies.

Towards the rational design of ylide-substituted phosphines for gold(i)-catalysis: from inactive to ppm-level catalysis

The implementation of gold catalysis into large-scale processes suffers from the fact that most reactions still require high catalyst loadings to achieve efficient catalysis thus making upscaling impractical. Here, we report systematic studies on the impact of the substituent in the backbone of ylide-substituted phosphines (YPhos) on the catalytic activity in the hydroamination of alkynes, which allowed us to increase the catalyst performance by orders of magnitude. While electronic changes of the ligand properties by introduction of aryl groups with electron-withdrawing or electron-donating groups had surprisingly little impact on the activity of the gold complexes, the use of bulky aryl groups with ortho-substituents led to a remarkable boost in the catalyst activity. However, this catalyst improvement is not a result of an increased steric demand of the ligand towards the metal center, but due to steric protection of the reactive ylidic carbon centre in the ligand backbone. The gold complex of the thus designed mesityl-substituted YPhos ligand Y_MesPCy₂, which is readily accessible in one step from a simple phosphonium salt, exhibited a high catalyst stability and allowed for turnover numbers up to 20 000 in the hydroamination of a series of different alkynes and amines. Furthermore, the catalyst was also active in more challenging reactions including enyne cyclisation and the formation of 1,2-dihydroquinolines.

Solvation Effects on the Structure and Stability of Alkali Metal Carbenoids

s‐Block metal carbenoids are carbene synthons and applied in a myriad of organic transformations. They exhibit a strong structure–activity relationship, but this is only poorly understood due to the challenging high reactivity and sensitivity of these reagents. Here, we report on systematic VT and DOSY NMR studies, XRD analyses as well as DFT calculations on a sulfoximinoyl‐substituted model system to explain the pronounced solvent dependency of the carbenoid stability. While the sodium and potassium chloride carbenoids showed high stabilities independent of the solvent, the lithium carbenoid was stable at room temperature in THF but decomposed at −10 °C in toluene. These divergent stabilities could be explained by the different structures formed in solution. In contrast to simple organolithium reagents, the monomeric THF‐solvate was found to be more stable than the dimer in toluene, since the latter more readily forms direct Li/Cl interactions which facilitate decomposition via α‐elimination.

Cationic Phosphorus Compounds Based on a Bis(1-piperidinyl)-Substituted Carbodiphosphorane: Syntheses, Structures, and Csp3–H Activation

The use of the bis(1-piperidinyl)-substituted carbodiphosphorane (Ph₂(Pip)P)₂C (1) as an NCN ligand for the stabilization of phosphorus cations was studied. A simple ligand for halide exchange allowed the synthesis and isolation of a series of phosphorus monocations of the type [1-PR₂]⁺ (with R = Cl, Br, I, CyCl, Ph). These cations exhibit characteristic NMR and structural properties which nicely correlate with the charge at the central phosphorus atom and the interaction between the ligand and the PR₂ moiety. Halide abstraction from the monocations does not result in isolable dicationic compounds but in an unexpected intramolecular C_sp³–H activation in the piperidinyl group. DFT studies show that the selective activation of the CH₂ group next to the nitrogen atom instead of a CH group at the phenyl substituents proceeds via an iminium intermediate formed by hydride transfer from the carbon atom to the cationic phosphorus center. This observation clearly demonstrates the pronounced π acidity of the dicationic phosphorus species in comparison to compounds with a further π-donor substituent.

Synthesis of Low-Valent Dinuclear Group 14 Compounds with Element-Element Bonds by Transylidation

Dinuclear low-valent compounds of the heavy main group elements are rare species owing to their intrinsic reactivity. However, they represent desirable target molecules due to their unusual bonding situations as well as applications in bond activations and materials synthesis. The isolation of such compounds usually requires the use of substituents that provide sufficient stability and synthetic access. Herein, we report on the use of strongly donating ylide-substituents to access low-valent dinuclear group 14 compounds. The ylides not only impart steric and electronic stabilization, but also allow facile synthesis via transfer of an ylide from tetrylene precursors of type R Y2 E to ECl2 (E=Ge, Sn; R Y=TolSO2 (PR3 )C with R=Ph, Cy). This method allowed the isolation of dinuclear complexes amongst a germanium analogue of a vinyl cation, [(Ph Y)2 GeGe(Ph Y)]+ with an electronic structure best described as a germylene-stabilized GeII cation and a ylide(chloro)digermene [Cy Y(Cl)GeGe(Cl)Cy Y] with an unusually unsymmetrical structure.

Efficient Pd-Catalyzed Direct Coupling of Aryl Chlorides with Alkyllithium Reagents

Organolithium compounds are amongst the most important organometallic reagents and frequently used in difficult metallation reactions. However, their direct use in the formation of C-C bonds is less established. Although remarkable advances in the coupling of aryllithium compounds have been achieved, Csp2 -Csp3 coupling reactions are very limited. Herein, we report the first general protocol for the coupling or aryl chlorides with alkyllithium reagents. Palladium catalysts based on ylide-substituted phosphines (YPhos) were found to be excellently suited for this transformation giving high selectivities at room temperature with a variety of aryl chlorides without the need for an additional transmetallation reagent. This is demonstrated in gram-scale synthesis including building blocks for materials chemistry and pharmaceutical industry. Furthermore, the direct coupling of aryllithiums as well as Grignard reagents with aryl chlorides was also easily accomplished at room temperature.

Phosphorus-ylides: powerful substituents for the stabilization of reactive main group compounds

Phosphorus ylides are 1,2-dipolar compounds with a negative charge on the carbon atom. This charge is stabilized by the neighbouring onium moiety, but can also be shifted towards other substituents thus making ylides strong π donor ligands and hence ideal substituents to stabilize reactive compounds such as cations and low-valent main group species. Furthermore, the donor strength and the steric properties can easily be tuned to meet different requirements for stabilizing reactive compounds and for tailoring the properties and reactivities of the main group element. Although the use of ylide substituents in main group chemistry is still in its infancy, the first examples of isolated compounds impressively demonstrate the potential of these ligands. This review summarizes the most important discoveries also in comparison to other substituents, thus outlining avenues for future research directions.

A diamino-substituted carbodiphosphorane as strong C-donor and weak N-donor: isolation of monomeric trigonal-planar L·ZnCl2

The isolation, structural characterization and coordination chemistry of a di(amino)-substituted carbodiphosphorane (CDP) are reported. Compared to the analogue, dianionic bis(iminophosphoryl)methandiides, the CDP is a stronger C-, but much weaker N-donor which led to the isolation of solely C-coordinated metal complexes amongst an unusual monomeric trigonal-planar L·ZnCl₂ complex.

Synthesis, Isolation and Crystal Structures of the Metalated Ylides [Cy3P-C-SO2Tol]M (M = Li, Na, K)

The preparation and isolation of the metalated ylides [Cy₃PCSO₂Tol]M (^Cy1‐M) (with M = Li, Na, K) are reported. In contrast to its triphenylphosphonium analogue the synthesis of ^Cy1‐M revealed to be less straight forward. Synthetic routes to the phosphonium salt precursor ^Cy1‐H₂ via different methods revealed to be unsuccessful or low‐yielding. However, nucleophilic attack of the ylide Cy₃P = CH₂ at toluenesulfonyl fluoride under basic conditions proved to be a high‐yielding method directly leading to the ylide ^Cy1‐H. Metalation to the yldiides was finally achieved with strong bases such as nBuLi, NaNH₂, or BnK. In the solid state, the lithium compound forms a tetrameric structure consisting of a (C–S–O–Li)₄ macrocycle, which incorporates an additional molecule of lithium iodide. The potassium compound forms a C₄‐symmetric structure with a (K₄O₄)₂ octahedral prism as central structural motif. Upon deprotonation the P–C–S linkage undergoes a remarkable contraction typical for metalated ylides.

Palladium Complexes Based on Ylide-Functionalized Phosphines (YPhos): Broadly Applicable High-Performance Precatalysts for the Amination of Aryl Halides at Room Temperature

Palladium allyl, cinnamyl, and indenyl complexes with the ylide-substituted phosphines Cy3 P+ -C- (R)PCy2 (with R=Me (L1) or Ph (L2)) and Cy3 P+ -C- (Me)PtBu2 (L3) were prepared and applied as defined precatalysts in C-N coupling reactions. The complexes are highly active in the amination of 4-chlorotoluene with a series of different amines. Higher yields were observed with the precatalysts in comparison to the in situ generated catalysts. Changes in the ligand structures allowed for improved selectivities by shutting down β-hydride elimination or diarylation reactions. Particularly, the complexes based on L2 (joYPhos) revealed to be universal precatalysts for various amines and aryl halides. Full conversions to the desired products are reached mostly within 1 h reaction time at room temperature, thus making L2 to one of the most efficient ligands in C-N coupling reactions. The applicability of the catalysts was demonstrated for aryl chlorides, bromides and iodides together with primary and secondary aryl and alkyl amines, including gram-scale applications also with low catalyst loadings of down to 0.05 mol %. Kinetic studies further demonstrated the outstanding activity of the precatalysts with TOF over 10.000 h-1 .

Towards the Preparation of Stable Cyclic Amino(ylide)Carbenes

Cyclic amino(ylide)carbenes (CAYCs) are the ylide-substituted analogues of N-heterocyclic Carbenes (NHCs). Due to the stronger π donation of the ylide compared to an amino moiety they are stronger donors and thus are desirable ligands for catalysis. However, no stable CAYC has been reported until today. Here, we describe experimental and computational studies on the synthesis and stability of CAYCs based on pyrroles with trialkyl onium groups. Attempts to isolate two CAYCs with trialkyl phosphonium and sulfonium ylides resulted in the deprotonation of the alkyl groups instead of the formation of the desired CAYCs. In case of the PCy₃-substituted system, the corresponding ylide was isolated, while deprotonation of the SMe₂-functionalized compound led to the formation of ethene and the thioether. Detailed computational studies on various trialkyl onium groups showed that both the α- and β-deprotonated compounds were energetically favored over the free carbene. The most stable candidates were revealed to be α-hydrogen-free adamantyl-substituted onium groups, for which β-deprotonation is less favorable at the bridgehead position. Overall, the calculations showed that the isolation of CAYCs should be possible, but careful design is required to exclude decomposition pathways such as deprotonations at the onium group.

Unraveling the High Activity of Ylide-Functionalized Phosphines in Palladium-Catalyzed Amination Reactions: A Comparative Study with CyJohnPhos and PtBu3

Comprehensive mechanistic insights into the activity of different catalysts based on different ligands are important for further ligand design and catalyst improvement. Herein, we report a combined computational and experimental study on the mechanism and catalytic activity of the ylide-substituted phosphine Cy₃P–C(Me)PCy₂ (keYPhos, L1) in C–N coupling reactions including a comparison with the established and often-applied phosphines ^CyJohnPhos (L2) and P(tBu)₃ (L3). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations together with the possible isolation of several intermediates within the catalytic cycle demonstrate that L1 readily forms low-coordinated palladium complexes [such as L1·Pd(dba)], which easily undergo oxidative addition and subsequent amine coordination as well as reductive elimination. Due to the possible opening and closing of the P–C–P angle in L1, the steric bulk can be adjusted to the metal environment so that L1 retains its conformation throughout the whole catalytic cycle, thus leading to fast catalysis at room temperature. Comparative studies of the three ligands with Pd₂dba₃ as a Pd source show that only L1 efficiently allows for the coupling of aryl chlorides at room temperature. DFT studies suggest that this is mainly due to the reluctance/inability of L2 and L3 to form the catalytically active species under these reaction conditions. In contrast, the YPhos ligand readily forms the prereactive complex and undergoes the first oxidative addition reaction. These observations are confirmed by kinetic studies, which indicate a short induction period for the formation of the catalytically active species of L1, followed by fast catalysis. This behavior of L1 is due to its unique electronic and steric properties, which support low activation barriers and fast catalyst generation.

Group 9 and 10 Metal Complexes of an Ylide-Substituted Phosphine: Coordination versus Cyclometalation and Oxidative Addition

Ylide-substituted phosphines (YPhos) have been shown to be excellent ligands for several transition metal catalyzed reactions. Investigations of the coordination behavior of the YPhos ligand Y_SPPh₂ (1) [with Y_S = (Ph₃P)(SO₂Tol)C] toward group 9 and 10 metals revealed a surprisingly diverse coordination chemistry of the ligand. With Ni(CO)₄, the formation of a di- as well as tricarbonyl complex is observed depending on the reaction conditions. In [(κP,η²-benzene-1)Ni(CO)₂] the phosphine ligand also coordinates via a phosphonium bound phenyl group to the metal leading to a unique nickel η²-arene interaction, which can be viewed as an intermediate state toward P–C bond activation. Full cleavage of the P–C bond takes place with [Rh(COD)Cl]₂ leading to a complex salt with [(κP,κO-1)Rh(COD)]⁺ as cation and a dirhodium trichloride complex anion. Here, Y_SPPh₂ underwent P–C bond cleavage to thus act as an anionic diphosphine ligand. In contrast, in [(κP,κO-1)Rh(COD)]⁺ as well as [(κP,κO-1)Rh(CO)Cl], formed from the reaction of 1 with [Rh(CO)₂Cl]_2, the YPhos ligand acts as bidentate ligand complexing the metal via the phosphine and sulfonyl moiety with an intact PPh₃ unit. A further type of coordination is observed with [Ir(COD)Cl]₂. Here, phosphine coordination is accompanied by C–H activation at one of the phosphonium bound phenyl groups leading to a cyclometalated complex.

Group 9 and 10 metal complexes with the ylide-substituted phosphine Y_SPPh₂ (Y_S = PPh₃=C−SO₂Tol) were prepared. The ligand exhibits a surprisingly versatile coordination behavior: simple coordinations as mono- or bidentate ligand as well as P−C and C−H bond activations are observed depending on the used metal precursor.

Ylide-Functionalization via Metalated Ylides: Synthesis and Structural Properties

The α-metallated ylides [Ph₃P-C-Z]^-M⁺ (with Z=SO₂Tol or CN and M=Na or K) were used as versatile nucleophiles for the facile access to ylide-substituted compounds. Halogenations, alkylations, carbonylations and functionalization reactions with main group element halides were easily accomplished by simple trapping reactions with the appropriate electrophiles. X-ray crystallographic studies of all compounds - including the first structures of α-fluorinated P-ylides - showed remarkable differences in the ylide backbone depending on the substituents. In the fluorinated compounds, a change from a fully planar to a pyramidalized ylidic carbon centre was observed despite the strongly anion-stabilizing ability of the yldiide substituent. π-Donation from the ylide substituent also resulted in geometric restrictions depending on the steric and electronic properties of the introduced substituents.

Isolation of a Diylide-Stabilized Stannylene and Germylene: Enhanced Donor Strength through Coplanar Lone Pair Alignment

The preparation of the first stable diylide‐substituted stannylene and germylene (Y₂E, with E=Ge, Sn and Y=[PPh₃‐C‐SO₂Tol]⁻) is reported. The synthesis is easily accomplished in one step from the sulfonyl‐substituted metalated ylide YNa and the corresponding ECl₂ precursors. Y₂Ge and Y₂Sn exhibit unusual structures in the solid state and in solution, in which the three adjacent lone pairs in the C‐E‐C linkage are arranged coplanar to each other. As shown by DFT studies, this bonding situation is preferred over the typical π‐donation from the ligands into the empty p‐orbital at the metal due to the strong anion‐stabilizing ability of the sulfonyl groups in the ylide backbone and their additional coordination to the metal. The alignment of the three lone pairs leads to a remarkable boost of the HOMO energy and thus of the donor strengths of the tetrylenes. Hence, Y₂Ge and Y₂Sn become stronger donors than their diamino or diaryl congeners and comparable to cyclic alkyl(amino)carbenes. First reactivity studies confirm the high reactivity of Y₂Ge and Y₂Sn, which for example undergo an intramolecular C−H activation reaction via metal–ligand cooperation.
