Abstract
A series of saddle-shaped donor-acceptor π-systems, termed TTFAQ-AQs, were designed and synthesized. The molecular structures of TTFAQ-AQs feature a π-fused framework containing an anthraquinodimethane extended tetrathiafulvalene (TTFAQ) as the donor and an anthraquinone (AQ) unit as the acceptor. As such, TTFAQ-AQs show enhanced intramolecular charge-transfer properties, which result in amphoteric redox behavior and narrow electronic energy band gaps. Detailed structural and electronic properties were investigated by UV-vis absorption, cyclic voltammetric, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) analyses. The supramolecular interactions of TTFAQ-AQs with C60 and C70 fullerenes were examined in both the solution and solid phases. Our results showed that the benzoannulated TTFAQ-AQ derivative favors interaction with C70 fullerene through complementary concave-convex interactions. Detailed energetics involved in the TTFAQ-AQ/C70 interactions were assessed by means of density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Abstract
The ability of a triplet photosensitizer to generate long-lived charge separated states, in contrast to traditionally used singlet photosensitizers, in covalently functionalized single-walled carbon nanotube hybrids has been investigated. Enriched single-walled carbon nanotubes with two diameters, namely (6,5) and (7,6), were covalently modified to carry a charge-stabilizing triplet photosensitizer derived from a palladium porphyrin. The nanohybrids were fully characterized and the presence of intramolecular interactions between the porphyrin and nanotubes was established from various spectroscopic, imaging, electrochemical and thermochemical studies. Photoluminescence of palladium porphyrin was found to be quantitatively quenched in the presence of covalently appended SWCNTs and this quenching is due to excited state charge separation and has been established by femtosecond transient absorption studies. Owing to the presence of the triplet photosensitizer, the charge separated states lasted over 3 ns, i.e., much longer than those reported earlier for singlet photosensitizer-derived nanotube hybrids. The nanohybrids also exhibited efficient photocatalytic behavior in experiments involving electron pooling of one-electron reduced methyl viologen in the presence of a sacrificial electron donor. Higher yields of photoproducts were achieved from the present donor-acceptor nanohybrids when compared with those of singlet photosensitizer-derived nanohybrids, more so for (6,5) nanotube derived hybrids compared to (7,6) nanotube derived hybrids. The present findings highlight the importance of triplet photosensitizer derived nanohybrids in artificial photosynthesis of charge separation and photocatalytic applicatons.

Abstract
HYPOTHESIS Molecules forming directed intermolecular hydrogen bonds, such as the well-known benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamides (BTA) motif, are known to self-assemble into long fibrous structures. However, only a few of these systems have so far demonstrated the ability to form such anisotropic nanostructures, if they are combined with hydrophilic polymers to create an amphiphilic material. Here, we designed BTA-polymer conjugates to investigate whether the directionality of the hydrogen bonds or the ratio of hydrophobic to hydrophilic parts of the molecule, and thus the packing parameter, is decisive for obtaining anisotropic supramolecular structures in water. EXPERIMENTS Poly(ethylene glycol) was conjugated to BTA moieties with varying lengths of hydrophobic alkyl spacers ranging from two to twelve methylene units. The resulting amphiphilic materials were characterized in aqueous solution by light and small-angle neutron scattering, analytical ultracentrifugation, and cryo-transmission electron microscopy. FINDINGS While spherical micelles were observed for C6 and C10 alkyl spacers, anisotropic structures were only present in case of the C12 spacer. The comparison to an analogous material, which lacks the directed hydrogen bonds, revealed that the BTA motif cannot provide a sufficient driving force to induce anisotropic structures, but increases the packing density in the hydrophobic part. Therefore, the packing parameter governs the appearance of anisotropic aggregates.

Abstract
Single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT)-based nanohybrid compositions based on (6,5) chirality-enriched SWNTs ([(6,5) SWNTs]) and a chiral n-type polymer (S-PBN(b)-Ph4 PDI) that exploits a perylenediimide (PDI)-containing repeat unit are reported; S-PBN(b)-Ph4 PDI-[(6,5) SWNT] superstructures feature a PDI electron acceptor unit positioned at 3 nm intervals along the nanotube surface, thus controlling rigorously SWNT-electron acceptor stoichiometry and organization. Potentiometric studies and redox-titration experiments determine driving forces for photoinduced charge separation (CS) and thermal charge recombination (CR) reactions, as well as spectroscopic signatures of SWNT hole polaron and PDI radical anion (PDI(-.) ) states. Time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopic studies demonstrate that S-PBN(b)-Ph4 PDI-[(6,5) SWNT] electronic excitation generates PDI(-.) via a photoinduced CS reaction (τCS ≈0.4 ps, ΦCS ≈0.97). These experiments highlight the concomitant rise and decay of transient absorption spectroscopic signatures characteristic of the SWNT hole polaron and PDI(-.) states. Multiwavelength global analysis of these data provide two charge-recombination time constants (τCR ≈31.8 and 250 ps) that likely reflect CR dynamics involving both an intimately associated SWNT hole polaron and PDI(-.) charge-separated state, and a related charge-separated state involving PDI(-.) and a hole polaron site produced via hole migration along the SWNT backbone that occurs over this timescale.

Abstract
The reactivity of several carbon nanoforms (CNFs), single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and graphene, has been investigated through a combination of arylation and click chemistry Cu(I)-mediated azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) reactions. The approach is based on the incorporation of electroactive π-extended tetrathiafulvalene (exTTF) units into the triazole linkers to modulate the electronic properties of the obtained conjugates. The introduction of strain, by bending the planar graphene sheet into a 3D carbon framework, is responsible for the singular reactivity observed in carbon nanotubes. The formed nanoconjugates were fully characterized by analytical, spectroscopic, and microscopic techniques (TGA, FTIR, Raman, UV-Vis-NIR, cyclic voltammetry, TEM and XPS). In the case of SWCNT conjugates, where the functionalization degree is higher, a series of steady-state and time resolved spectroscopy experiments revealed a photoinduced electron transfer from the exTTF unit to the electron-accepting SWCNT.

Abstract
Simple stacks of perylenediimides (PDIs) grown directly on solid surfaces are an intriguing starting point for the construction of multicomponent architectures because their intrinsic activity is already very high. The ability of PDI stacks to efficiently generate photocurrent originates from the strong absorption of visible light and the efficient transport of both electrons and holes after generation with light. The objective of this study was to explore whether or not the excellent performance of these remarkably simple single-channel photosystems could be further improved in more sophisticated multicomponent architectures. We report that the directional construction of strings of anions or cations along the PDI stacks does not significantly improve their activity; that is, the intrinsic activity of PDI stacks is too high to yield ion-gated photosystems. The directional construction of electron- and hole-transporting stacks of naphthalenediimides (NDIs) and oligothiophenes along the central PDI stack did not improve photocurrent generation under standard conditions either. However, the activity of double-channel photosystems increased with increasing thickness, whereas increasing charge recombination with single-channel PDI stacks resulted in decreasing activity with increasing length. Most efficient long-distance charge transport was found with double-channel photosystems composed of PDIs and NDIs. This finding suggests that over long distances, PDI stacks transport holes better than electrons, at least under the present conditions. Triple-channel photosystems built around PDI stacks with oligothiophenes and triphenylamines were less active, presumably because hole mobility in the added channels was inferior to that in the original PDI stacks, thus promoting charge recombination.

Abstract
A facile polymerization of an allyl-functionalized N-carboxyanhydride (NCA) monomer is utilized to construct an A-B-A-type triblock structure containing β-sheet-rich oligomeric peptide segments tethered by a poly(ethylene oxide) chain, which are capable of dispersing and gelating single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) noncovalently in organic solvents, resulting in significant enhancement of the mechanical properties of polypeptide-based organogels.

Abstract
Investigating through-space electronic communication between discrete cofacially oriented aromatic π-systems is fundamental to understanding assemblies as diverse as double-stranded DNA, organic photovoltaics and thin-film transistors. A detailed understanding of the electronic interactions involved rests on making the appropriate molecular compounds with rigid covalent scaffolds and π-π distances in the range of ca. 3.5 Å. Reported herein is an enantiomeric pair of doubly-bridged naphthalene-1,8:4,5-bis(dicarboximide) (NDI) cyclophanes and the characterization of four of their electronic states, namely 1) the ground state, 2) the exciton coupled singlet excited state, 3) the radical anion with strong through-space interactions between the redox-active NDI molecules, and 4) the diamagnetic diradical dianion using UV/Vis/NIR, EPR and ENDOR spectroscopies in addition to X-ray crystallography. Despite the unfavorable Coulombic repulsion, the singlet diradical dianion dimer of NDI shows a more pronounced intramolecular π-π stacking interaction when compared with its neutral analog.

Abstract
The construction of ordered single-wall carbon nanotube soft-materials at the nanoscale is currently an important challenge in science. Here we use single-wall carbon nanotubes as a tool to gain control over the crystalline ordering of three-dimensional bulk materials composed of suitably functionalized molecular building blocks. We prepare p-type nanofibres from tripeptide and pentapeptide-containing small molecules, which are covalently connected to both carboxylic and electron-donating 9,10-di(1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)-9,10-dihydroanthracene termini. Adding small amounts of single-wall carbon nanotubes to the so-prepared p-nanofibres together with the externally controlled self assembly by charge screening by means of Ca(2+) results in new and stable single-wall carbon nanotube-based supramolecular gels featuring remarkably long-range internal order.
