Multiple lanthanide helicate clusters and the effects of anions on their configuration

Enantiopure trigonal bipyramidal coordination cages templated by in situ self-organized D2h-symmetric anions

The control of a molecule's geometry, chirality, and physical properties has long been a challenging pursuit. Our study introduces a dependable method for assembling D3-symmetric trigonal bipyramidal coordination cages. Specifically, D2h-symmetric anions, like oxalate and chloranilic anions, self-organize around a metal ion to form chiral-at-metal anionic complexes, which template the formation of D3-symmetric trigonal bipyramidal coordination cages. The chirality of the trigonal bipyramid is determined by the point chirality of chiral amines used in forming the ligands. Additionally, these cages exhibit chiral selectivity for the included chiral-at-metal anionic template. Our method is broadly applicable to various ligand systems, enabling the construction of larger cages when larger D2h-symmetric anions, like chloranilic anions, are employed. Furthermore, we successfully produce enantiopure trigonal bipyramidal cages with anthracene-containing backbones using this approach, which would be otherwise infeasible. These cages exhibit circularly polarized luminescence, which is modulable through the reversible photo-oxygenation of the anthracenes.

Ligand Chirality Transfer from Solution State to the Crystalline Self-Assemblies in Circularly Polarized Luminescence (CPL) Active Lanthanide Systems

The synthesis of a family of chiral and enantiomerically pure pyridyl-diamide (pda) ligands that upon complexation with europium [Eu(CF3SO3)3] result in chiral complexes with metal centered luminescence is reported; the sets of enantiomers giving rise to both circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) signatures. The solid-state structures of these chiral metallosupramolecular systems are determined using X-ray diffraction showing that the ligand chirality is transferred from solution to the solid state. This optically favorable helical packing arrangement is confirmed by recording the CPL spectra from the crystalline assembly by using steady state and enantioselective differential chiral contrast (EDCC) CPL Laser Scanning Confocal Microscopy (CPL-LSCM) where the two enantiomers can be clearly distinguished.

Coordination-Driven Salamo-Salen-Salamo-Type Multinuclear Transition Metal(II) Complexes: Synthesis, Structure, Luminescence, Transformation of Configuration, and Nuclearity Induced by the Acetylacetone Anion

A flexible polydentate Salamo-Salen-Salamo hybrid ligand H₄L was designed and synthesized, which has rich pockets (salamo and salen pockets) so that it may have fascinating coordination patterns with transition metal(II) ions. Four multinuclear transition metal(II) complexes, novel butterfly-shaped homotetranuclear [Ni₄(L)(μ₁-OAc)₂(μ_1,3-OAc)₂(H₂O)_0.5(CH₃CH₂OH)_3.5]·4CH₃CH₂OH (1), helical homotrinuclear [Zn₃(L)(μ₁-OAc)₂]·2CH₃CH₂OH (2), double-helical homotrinuclear [Cu₂(H₂L)₂]·2CH₃CN (3), and mononuclear [Ni(H₂L)]·1.5CH₃COCH₃ (4), have been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The effects of different anions [OAc^- and (O₂C₅H₇)^2-] on the complexation behavior of H₄L with transition metal(II) ions were studied by UV-vis spectrophotometry. The fluorescent properties of the four complexes were studied with zebrafish, which are expected to be a potential light-emitting material. Ultimately, interaction region indicator (IRI) valuations, Hirshfeld surface analyses, density functional theory (DFT & TD-DFT), electrostatic potential analyses (ESP), and simulations were carried out to further demonstrate the weak interactions and electronic properties of the free ligand and its four complexes.

Construction of High Quantum Yield Lanthanide Luminescent MOF Platform by In Situ Doping and Its Temperature Sensing Performance

Lanthanide luminescent MOF materials show excellent luminescent properties. However, obtaining lanthanide luminescent MOFs with high quantum yield is a challenging research. A novel bismuth-based metal-organic framework [Bi(SIP)(DMF)₂] was constructed by solvothermal method, utilizing 5-sulfoisophthalic acid monosodium salt (NaH₂SIP) and Bi(NO₃)₃·5H₂O. Thereafter, doped MOFs (Ln-Bi-SIP, Ln = Eu, Tb, Sm, Dy, Yb, Nd, Er) with different luminescent properties have been obtained by in situ doping with different lanthanide metal ions, among which Eu-Bi-SIP, Tb-Bi-SIP, Sm-Bi-SIP, and Dy-Bi-SIP have high quantum yield. What is special is that the doping amount of Ln³⁺ ions is very low, and the doped MOF can achieve high luminescence quantum yields. EuTb-Bi-SIP obtained by Eu³⁺/Tb³⁺ codoping and Dy-Bi-SIP exhibit good temperature sensing performance over a wide temperature range with the maximum sensitivity S_r of 1.6%·K^-1 (433 K) and 2.6%·K^-1, respectively (133 K), while the cycling experiments also show good repeatability in the assay temperature range. Finally, considering the practical application value, EuTb-Bi-SIP was blended with an organic polymer poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) to produce a thin film, which shows different color changes at different temperatures.

Subcomponent self-assembly of circular helical Dy6(L)6 and bipyramid Dy12(L)8 architectures directed via second-order template effects

In situ metal-templated (hydrazone) condensation also called subcomponent self-assembly of 4,6-dihydrazino-pyrimidine, o-vanillin and dysprosium ions resulted in the formation of discrete hexa- or dodecanuclear metallosupramolecular Dy6(L)6 or Dy12(L)8 aggregates resulting from second-order template effects of the base and the lanthanide counterions used in these processes. XRD analysis revealed unique circular helical or tetragonal bipyramid architectures in which the bis(hydrazone) ligand L adopts different conformations and shows remarkable differences in its mode of metal coordination. While a molecule of trimethylamine acts as a secondary template that fills the void of the Dy6(L)6 assembly, sodium ions take on this role for the formation of heterobimetallic Dy12(L)8 by occupying vacant coordination sites, thus demonstrating that these processes can be steered in different directions upon subtle changes of reaction conditions. Furthermore, Dy6(L)6 shows an interesting spin-relaxation energy barrier of 435 K, which is amongst the largest values within multinuclear lanthanide single-molecular magnets.

Self-assembly of fish-bone and grid-like CoII-based single-molecule magnets using dihydrazone ligands with NNN and NNO pockets

Three Co^II complexes, [Co₂(H₂L¹)₂](ClO₄)₄·4CH₃OH (1), [Co₂(H₄L²)₂](ClO₄)₄ (2) and [Co₄(H₄L²)₄](ClO₄)₈ (3), were constructed by the self-assembly of the symmetrical dihydrazone ligands H2L1 and H4L2 with Co^II ions under different synthetic conditions. The fish-bone-like complex 1 was obtained using the ligand H2L1 in methanol via the solvothermal method, while the self-assembly of H4L2 with Co^II ions is solvent-dependent, producing the fish-bone-like complex 2 and [2 × 2] grid-like complex 3. Magnetic susceptibility measurements and theoretical calculations reveal that the large negative D values for the three complexes stem from their easy-axis magnetic anisotropy. Ac magnetic susceptibility measurements disclosed field-induced slow magnetic relaxation behaviors and the presence of Raman and/or direct processes of the three complexes at various applied dc fields.

A Discrete 3d-4f Metallacage as an Efficient Catalytic Nanoreactor for a Three-Component Aza-Darzens Reaction

The exploration and development of coordination nanocages can provide an approach to control chemical reactions beyond the bounds of the flask, which has aroused great interest due to their significant applications in the field of molecular recognition, supramolecular catalysis, and molecular self-assembly. Herein, we take the advantage of a semirigid and nonsymmetric bridging ligand (H₅L) with rich metal-chelating sites to construct an unusual and discrete 3d-4f metallacage, [Zn₂Er₄(H₂L)₄(NO₃)Cl₂(H₂O)]·NO₃·xCH₃OH·yH₂O (Zn₂Er₄). The 3d-4f Zn₂Er₄ cage possesses a quadruple-stranded structure, and all of the ligands wrap around an open spherical cavity within the core. The self-assembly of the unique cage not only ensures the structural stability of the Zn₂Er₄ cage as a nanoreactor in solution but also makes the bimetallic lanthanide cluster units active sites that are exposed in the medium-sized cavity. It is important to note that the Zn₂Er₄ cage as a homogeneous catalyst has been successfully applied to catalyze three-component aza-Darzens reactions of formaldehyde, anilines, and α-diazo esters without another additive under mild conditions, displaying better catalytic activity, higher specificity, short reaction time, and low catalyst loadings. A possible mechanism for this three-component aza-Darzens reaction catalyzed by the Zn₂Er₄ cage has been proposed. These experimental results have demonstrated the great potential of the discrete 3d-4f metallacage as a host nanoreactor for the development of supramolecular or molecular catalysis.

Coordination-Directed Self-Assembly of Functional Polynuclear Lanthanide Supramolecular Architectures

Lanthanide supramolecular chemistry is a fast growing and intriguing research field due to the unique photophysical, magnetic, and coordination properties of lanthanide ions (Ln^III). Compared with the intensively investigated mononuclear Ln-complexes, polymetallic lanthanide supramolecular assemblies offer more structural superiority and functional advantages. In recent decades, significant progress has been made in polynuclear lanthanide supramolecules, varying from structural evolution to luminescent and magnetic functional materials. This review summarizes the design principles in ligand-induced coordination-driven self-assembly of polynuclear Ln-structures and intends to offer guidance for the construction of more elegant Ln-based architectures and optimization of their functional performances. Design principles concerning the water solubility and chirality of the lanthanide-organic assemblies that are vital in extending their applications are emphasized. The strategies for improving the luminescent properties and the applications in up-conversion, host-guest chemistry, luminescent sensing, and catalysis have been summarized. Magnetic materials based on supramolecular assembled lanthanide architectures are given in an individual section and are classified based on their structural features. Challenges remaining and perspective directions in this field are also briefly discussed.

Anion-Dependent Structure and Luminescence Diversity in ZnII-LnIII Heterometallic Architectures Supported by a Salicylamide-Imine Ligand

To advance the structural development and fully explore the application potential, it is highly desirable but challenging to elucidate the relationship between the structures and properties of Zn^II-Ln^III heterometallic species. Herein, three types of Zn^II-Ln^III heterometallic compounds (Ln^III = Gd^III, Tb^III) formulated as [Zn₁₆Ln₄L₁₂(μ₃-O)₄(NO₃)₁₂]·8CH₃CN (ZnLn-1), [Zn₂Ln₂L₂(NO₃)₆(H₂O)₂]·3CH₃CN (ZnLn-2), and [Zn₄Ln₂L₈(OAc)₁₂]·xCH₃CN (ZnLn-3: for Ln = Gd, x = 5; for Ln = Tb, x = 4) were dictated by common inorganic anions, NO₃^- and OAc^-, with the aid of the multidentate ligand H₂L with propane as the central skeleton and 3-methoxysalicylamide and 3-methoxysalicylaldimine as terminal groups. ZnLn-1 features cubic cages with four {Zn₄L₃} tetrahedral subunits and four Ln³⁺ centers positioned at the eight vertices alternately when NO₃^- was introduced into the reaction system exclusively. An attempt to replace NO₃^- in ZnLn-1 with OAc^- partially led to the formation of {Zn₂Ln₂L₂} heterometallic wheels. Meanwhile, ZnLn-3 featuring double-hairpin-like {Zn₄Ln₂L₄} hemicycles that are orthogonal to each other assisted by intermolecular hydrogen bonds was constructed when NO₃^- in ZnLn-1 was completely replaced by OAc^-. Their structural integrity in solution were ascertained by both emission and ¹H NMR spectroscopy. Ascribed to the different Zn²⁺-containing antenna, ZnTb-2 possesses a relatively strong emission characteristic of Tb³⁺; ZnTb-1 has moderate Tb³⁺ luminescence, yet an absence of Tb³⁺ emission is found in ZnTb-3. Such an emission difference could be mainly attributed to the antenna effect directed by distinct structural characteristics induced by anions. The anion-dictated self-assembly strategy presented herein not only offers a facile approach to regulate the coordination mode of H₂L to such an extent to obtain diverse structures of Zn^II-Ln^III heterometallic species but also provides an understanding of how common inorganic anions tune coordination-driven self-assemblies as well as the subsequent luminescence properties.

Self-assembly and luminescence of trinuclear lanthanide based supramolecular circular helicates

A series of trinuclear lanthanide circular helicates [Ln₃L₃]Cl₃ have been synthesized via supramolecular subcomponent self-assembly. Photophysical studies demonstrate that the unique helical bis-tetradentate 1,29-dialdehyde ligand L^2- could serve as an effective sensitizer for Sm^III, Eu^III, Nd^III and Yb^III ions exhibiting efficient characteristic fluorescence emission because of the shell-type blocking of the ligand, which makes them the first circular helicates exhibiting near-infrared lanthanide fluorescence.

Recent advances in heteroleptic multiple-stranded metallosupramolecules

Well-ordered combination of defined coordination spheres and multiple types of ligands (heteroleptic) in a given structure can expand the structural complexity and functional diversity of the resulting metallosupramolecules. Such heteroleptic metallosupramolecular architectures are expected to afford advanced utility in a variety of applications. In this concise review article, recent advances in the development of multi-nuclear-cluster-based heteroleptic multiple-stranded (HLMS) metallosupramolecules are summarized and demonstrated. To construct HLMS metallosupramolecules, one type of multitopic ligands can be employed for building up multiple strands, while another type of ligands can be utilized to construct multi-nuclear clusters. Most HLMS metallosupramolecules adopt helical geometries and have high molecular symmetry, which can be key factors for the structural completion. HLMS metallosupramolecules can be used as basic building blocks for the fabrication of higher-order polymeric or discrete assembly architectures with well-defined geometries.

Base- and Metal-Dependent Self-Assembly of Lathanide-Organic Coordination Polymers or Macrocycles with Tetradentate Acylhydrazone-based Ditopic Ligands

Herein, we report a comprehensive study on the lanthanide-directed coordination self-assembly with two bis-tetradentate acylhydrazone ligands H₄ L¹ and H₄ L² . Multifarious outcomes, which are base- and metal-dependent, were revealed by NMR, ESI-TOF-MS and X-ray crystallography. In the absence of base, bent H₄ L¹ was assembled into dinuclear double-strand helicate Ln₂ (H₂ L¹ )₂ by partially-deprotonated assembly with La, Sm or Eu, while trinuclear Ln₃ (H₂ L¹ )₃ with Yb or Lu. For linear H₄ L² , infinite 1D zig-zag metal-organic polymeric chain (Ln₂ H₂ L² )_n was obtained. However, complete deprotonated L¹ and L² assembled into discrete trinuclear Ln₃ (L^{1 /2} )₃ and tetranuclear Ln₄ (L^{1 /2} )₄ macrocyclic structures under the basic condition. For these, there are multiple possible isomers coexisting in the solution which were enumerated and simulated with molecular mechanic modeling. Visible-light sensitized NIR emissions on the Yb complexes have been observed, endowing them potential application in photofunctional materials.

Water-stable lanthanide-organic macrocycles from a 1,2,4-triazole-based chelate for enantiomeric excess detection and pesticide sensing

Water-stable anionic Ln2L2-type (Ln = LaIII and EuIII) lanthanide-organic macrocycles have been constructed by deprotonation self-assembly of a bis-tridentate ligand consisting of two 2,6-bis-(1,2,4-triazole)-pyridine chelation arms bridged by a dibenzofuran chromophore, of which the luminescent Eu2L2 macrocycle can be used for enantiomeric excess (ee) detection toward pybox-type chiral ligands and selective colorimetric sensing of omethoate (OMA) in water.

Hexameric Lanthanide-Organic Capsules with Tertiary Structure and Emergent Functions

Biological macromolecules always function through a collective behavior of the aggregated constituents, which usually are self-assembled together via noncovalent interactions. Likewise, artificial supramolecular assemblies, whose properties and functions are mainly derived from their primary and secondary structures, may also aggregate into high-order architectures with emergent functions not available on the individual components. Here we report the first example of an insulin-like hexamerization of lanthanide triple helicates toward a 4 nm diameter hexameric capsule via consecutive metal-directed and anion-directed assembly processes. Hierarchical chiral-sorting self-assembly endows hexamers with aggregation-induced stability and emission enhancement. Furthermore, emergent guest-encapsulation function and enantioselectivity toward terpene drugs have been realized in the late-formed central cavity of the hexamers. This study not only provides a feasible strategy for constructing sophisticated and multifunctional lanthanide-organic materials but also sheds some light on the self-assembly processes in nature.

Lanthanide Supermolecular Transformers Induced by K+ and CO2

The transfer of configuration information from supramolecular helices is a ubiquitous phenomenon in nature. DNA and proteins often change their helical structure in response to particular external stimuli and can activate important related events through sophisticated mechanisms. Attempts to create artificial multiple-stranded helicates that can adjust the configuration under external stimuli have also met with limited success. Using a simple ligand, we now show multiple-stranded lanthanide helicates that transform efficiently. Lanthanide and ligand are successfully self-assembled into different multiple helical supermolecular clusters using different templates. Additionally, these intelligent supermolecular transformers can also be transformed by different external stimuli and realize the selective recognition and fixation of the corresponding ions and molecules.

Calix[4]arene-Based Triple-Stranded Metallohelicate in Water

The title complex is a triple-stranded metallohelicate organized by the self-assembly of 5,17-difunctionalized calix[4]arenes and metal cations with octahedral coordination geometry. Due to hydrophilic triethylene glycol chains on the lower rim of the calix[4]arene, the metallohelicate can encapsulate cationic guests in water. NMR and UV-vis titration experiments reveal that the metallohelicate captures a pyridinium guest with an alanine derivative to form a host-guest complex with a host-guest ratio of 1 : 1. CD spectroscopy confirms the bias of the P- and M-helical sense of the metallohelicate by the captured guest. The metallohelicate captures two molecules of dicationic N,N'-dimethyl-DABCO and monocationic N-methyl quinuclidine, exhibiting a positive allosteric effect. ¹ H NMR titration experiments indicate that the bound guests are in close proximately to the aromatic rings of the ligands. Molecular mechanics calculations based on the UV-vis and NMR observations suggest that the first guest preorganizes the conformation of the metallohelicate to facilitate access of the second guest to the cavity.

Two pairs of chiral lanthanide–oxo clusters Ln14 induced by amino acid derivatives

Two pairs of chiral lanthanide–oxo clusters l-/d-Ln14 (Ln = Y/Dy) have been obtained under the action of anion template. The solid-state circular dichroism (CD) spectra of l-Y14/d-Y14 and l-Dy14/d-Dy14 displayed mirror symmetry effects.

One Nanoscale Zn(II)-Nd(III) Complex With Schiff Base Ligand: NIR Luminescent Sensing of Anions and Nitro Explosives

One Zn-Nd complex [Zn₂Nd₄L₂(OAc)₁₀(OH)₂(CH₃OH)₂] (1) was synthesized from Schiff base ligand bis(3-methoxysalicylidene)ethylene-1,2-phenylenediamine (H₂L). 1 shows nanoscale rectangular structure with sizes of about 0.8 × 1.1 × 2.8 nm. 1 exhibits typical near-infrared luminescence of Nd(III) under the excitation of UV-visible light. Further study shows that the complex displays luminescent response behavior to anions and nitro explosives, especially with high sensitivity to H₂ PO 2 - and 2,4,6-trinitrophenol.

Self-assembled Tetranuclear EuIII Complexes with D2- and C2h-Symmetrical Square Scaffold

Three new tetranuclear europium(III) alternating circular helicates, (2-^PhRRRR/2-^PhSSSS) [(R)- or (S)-Ph-Pybox]₄Eu^III₄(BPP)₆, (2-^iPrRRRR/2-^iPrSSSS) [(R)- or (S)-ⁱPr-Pybox]₄Eu^III₄(BPP)₆, and (3-^PhRRRR/3-^PhSSSS) [(R)- or (S)-Ph-Pybox]₄Eu^III₄(BHP)₆, are presented with their structural and chiroptical characterization (BPP and BHP = bis-β-diketonates; Pybox = chiral bis(oxazolinyl) pyridine ligand). X-ray crystallographic analysis revealed that different extents of interligand-contacting interactions between bis-β-diketonates and Pybox ligands produce different bis-β-diketonates arrangements around four Eu^III ions and, thus, their specific symmetry in the final tetranuclear complexes. 2-^PhRRRR/2-^PhSSSS and 3-^PhRRRR/3-^PhSSSS are recognized as D₂-symmetry, while 2-^iPrRRRR/2-^iPrSSSS self-assemblies possess pseudo C_2h-symmetry. Due to different molecular symmetry, 2-^PhRRRR/2-^PhSSSS and 2-^iPrRRRR/2-^iPrSSSS crystals display different ligands orientation in their Eu^III coordination spheres. The presence of pseudo σ_h-mirror symmetry in 2-^iPrRRRR/2-^iPrSSSS promotes a pair of distinguishable Eu^III geometries. All the chiral self-assemblies exhibit almost identical photoluminescence emission spectra patterns of f-f transitions in the Eu^III core. The Eu^III self-assemblies exhibit intense CPL with different observed |g_lum| values (2-^PhRRRR/2-^PhSSSS ∼ |0.31|, 2-^iPrRRRR/2-^iPrSSSS ∼ |0.08|, 3-^PhRRRR/3-^PhSSSS ∼ |0.31| in chloroform).

Guest Binding Drives Host Redistribution in Libraries of CoII 4 L4 Cages

Two CoII 4 L4 tetrahedral cages prepared from similar building blocks showed contrasting host-guest properties. One cage did not bind guests, whereas the second encapsulated a series of anions, due to electronic and geometric effects. When the building blocks of both cages were present during self-assembly, a library of five CoII LA x LB 4-x cages was formed in a statistical ratio in the absence of guests. Upon incorporation of anions able to interact preferentially with some library members, the products obtained were redistributed in favor of the best anion binders. To quantify the magnitudes of these templation effects, ESI-MS was used to gauge the effect of each template upon library redistribution.

Self-assembly of tetranuclear 3d–4f helicates as highly efficient catalysts for CO2 cycloaddition reactions under mild conditions

A series of 4-nuclear lanthanide clusters supported by organic ligands Zn3LnL4 (Ln = Dy(1), Gd(2), Er(3)) were synthesized. These helicates could be used to convert CO₂ into cyclic carbonates with TOF up to 38 000 h⁻¹, without being influenced by moisture or air.

Supramolecular chirality transformation driven by monodentate ligand binding to a coordinatively unsaturated self-assembly based on C 3-symmetric ligands

Monodentate ligand binding is facilitated by supramolecular chirality transformations from propeller-shaped chirality into single-twist chirality by altering the self-assembly of C 3-symmetric chiral ligands. The C 3-symmetric chiral ligands (Im R 3Bz and Im S 3Bz) contain three chiral imidazole side arms (Im R  and Im S ) at the 1,3,5-positions of a central benzene ring. Upon coordination to zinc ions (Zn2+), which have a tetrahedral coordination preference, the C 3-symmetric chiral ligands assemble, in a stepwise manner, into a propeller-shaped assembly with a general formula (Im( R or S ) 3Bz)4(Zn2+)3. In this structure each Zn2+ ion coordinates to the three individual imidazole side arms. The resulting assembly is formally coordinatively unsaturated (coordination number, n = 3) and capable of accepting monodentate co-ligands (imidazole: ImH2) to afford a coordinatively saturated assembly [(ImH2)3(Im R 3Bz)4(Zn2+)3]. The preformed propeller-shaped chirality is preserved during this transformation. However, an excess of the monodentate co-ligand (ImH2/Zn2+ molar ratio of ∼1.7) alters the propeller-shaped assembly into a stacked dimer assembly [(ImH2) m (Im R 3Bz)2(Zn2+)3] (m = 4-6) with single-twist chirality. This switch alters the degree of enhancement and the circular dichroism (CD) pattern, suggesting a structural transition into a chiral object with a different shape. Cation sensing by luminescent high-nuclearity Zn–Eu Schiff base nanoscale complexes: high sensitivity to Ag+ and Cd2+ ions at the ppm level

Luminescent Polynuclear Zn- and Cd-Ln Square-Like Nanoclusters With a Flexible Long-Chain Schiff Base Ligand

Two series of Zn-Ln and Cd-Ln nanoclusters [Ln₄Zn₈L₂(OAc)₂₀(OH)₄] [Ln = Nd (1), Yb (2), and Sm (3)] and [Ln₂Cd₂L₂(OAc)₂(OH)₂(OCH₃)₂] [Ln = Nd (4), Yb (5), and Sm (6)] were prepared using a long-chain Schiff base ligand with a flexible (CH₂)₂O(CH₂)₂O(CH₂)₂ chain. All these clusters show square-like structures. The Schiff base ligands show “linear” configurations in the structures of 1-6, and the metric dimensions of Zn-Ln and Cd-Ln clusters measure ~8 × 14 × 21 and 8 × 12 × 12 Å, respectively. The study of luminescence properties shows that the Zn/L and Cd/L chromophores can effectively transfer energy to the lanthanide ions, and 1-6 show visible and NIR emissions.

A self-assembling luminescent lanthanide molecular nanoparticle with potential for live cell imaging

Four luminescent 32-metal Cd-Tb nanoclusters, [Tb₈Cd₂₄(L¹)₁₂(OAc)₄₈] (1), [Tb₈Cd₂₄(L²)₁₂(OAc)₄₈] (2), [Tb₈Cd₂₄(L³)₁₂(OAc)₄₈] (3) and [Tb₈Cd₂₄(L²)₁₂(1,4-BDC)₄(OAc)₃₈(OH)₂] (4), were constructed from three specially designed chain-like Schiff base ligands H₂L^1-3 with flexible carbon-carbon backbones containing 5, 6 and 10 methylene units, respectively. The clusters exhibit drum-like structures and can be imaged using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In addition to the Schiff base ligands (the primary energy transfer donors), four 1,4-BDC bridging units were successfully introduced into the structure of 4. In addition to providing increased structural stability, the 1,4-BDC units act as secondary energy transfer donors providing extra energy for lanthanide luminescence, which results in improved luminescence properties when compared to those of the related Cd-Ln nanoclusters without 1,4-BDC units. In vitro investigations on 4 with SGC and PANC cancer cells revealed an accumulation of the molecular nanoparticles in the cells, as confirmed by confocal microscopy. The cytotoxicity of 4 toward the SGC and PANC cells is moderate (IC₅₀ values of 4 lie in the range of 15-60 μM). ICP-MS analysis reveals that cellular uptakes of 4 in 1000 SGC and PANC cells after treatment for 3 hours are 0.0094 pmol and 0.015 pmol, respectively.

Self-assembly of rare octanuclear quad(double-stranded) cluster helicates showing slow magnetic relaxation and the magnetocaloric effect

Four rare structurally novel octanuclear quad(double-strands) cluster helicates containing Ln8 polyhedron cores have been synthesized. Magnetic studies show that the Gd derivative exhibits the magnetocaloric effect and the Dy derivative shows slow magnetic relaxation under zero dc field.
