Abstract
The aryl O-carbamate (ArOAm) group is among the strongest of the directed metalation groups (DMGs) in directed ortho metalation (DoM) chemistry, especially in the form Ar-OCONEt2. Since the last comprehensive review of metalation chemistry involving ArOAms (published more than 30 years ago), the field has expanded significantly. For example, it now encompasses new substrates, solvent systems, and metalating agents, while conditions have been developed enabling metalation of ArOAm to be conducted in a green and sustainable manner. The ArOAm group has also proven to be effective in the anionic ortho-Fries (AoF) rearrangement, Directed remote metalation (DreM), iterative DoM sequences, and DoM-halogen dance (HalD) synthetic strategies and has been transformed into a diverse range of functionalities and coupled with various groups through a range of cross-coupling (CC) strategies. Of ultimate value, the ArOAm group has demonstrated utility in the synthesis of a diverse range of bioactive and polycyclic aromatic compounds for various applications.

Abstract
By employing enaminones and thiuram disulfides as starting materials, the frontiers of Newman-Kwart rearrangement have been expanded to the alkenyl system for the first time. In addition, instead of leading to the formation of simple carbamothioates, the rearrangement has led to the unprecedented construction of S-heteroaryls. Depending on the differences in the enaminone structure, the efficient synthesis of functionalized isothiazoles and thiophenes has been achieved.

Abstract
A novel and practical method for the preparation of difunctionalized quinolines, bearing a thiocarbamate group at the C3-position and an acyloxyl group at the C4-position, and quinolinonyl thiocarbamates from quinolinones, tetraalkylthiuram disulfides, and hypervalent iodine(III) reagents has been developed via thiocarbamation of quinolinones at room temperature. The present method features mild reaction conditions, good tolerance with diverse functional groups, and a wide substrate scope, providing the desired products in good yields. Furthermore, this transformation is easy to scale up, and the desired products can be readily converted to heterocyclic thiols. Most importantly, this protocol allows for the late-stage thiocarbamation of bioactive compounds. Mechanistic studies show that radicals may be involved in this transformation, water is probably the oxygen source of thiocarbamates, and difunctionalized quinolines are possibly formed via nucleophilic attack of carboxylic anions, which derive from hypervalent iodine(III) reagents.

Abstract
Hydrogen selenide (H2Se) is a possible bioregulator, potential gasotransmitter, and important precursor in biological organoselenium compound synthesis. Early tools for H2Se research have benefitted from available mechanistic understanding of analogous small molecules developed for detecting or delivering H2S. A now common approach for H2S delivery is the use of small molecule thiocarbamates that can be engineered to release COS, which is quickly converted to H2S by carbonic anhydrase. To expand our understanding of the chemical underpinnings that enable H2Se delivery, we investigated whether selenocarbamates undergo similar chemistry to release carbonyl selenide (COSe). Using both light- and hydrolysis-activated systems, we demonstrate that unlike their lighter thiocarbamate congeners, selenocarbamates release H2Se directly with concomitant isocyanate formation rather than by the intermediate release of COSe. This reaction mechanism for direct H2Se release is further supported by computational investigations that identify a ΔΔG‡ ∼ 25 kcal mol-1 between the H2Se and COSe release pathways in the absence of protic solvent. This work highlights fundamentally new approaches for H2Se release from small molecules and advances the understanding of reactivity differences between reactive sulfur and selenium species.

Abstract
Selenium-containing compounds are gaining more and more interest due to their valuable and promising pharmacological properties, mainly as anticancer and antioxidant agents. Ebselen, the up to now only approved drugs, is well known to possess very good glutathione peroxidase mimicking effects. To date, the most of efforts have been directed to build pure synthetic Se containing molecules, while less attention have been devoted to Se-based semisynthetic products resembling natural compounds like terpenes, polyphenols, and alkaloids. The aim of this short communication is to report the synthesis of the first example of a Se-phenylpropanoids, namely selenoauraptene, containing a selenogeranyl side chain in position 7 of the umbelliferone core. The key step was the Newman-Kwart rearrangement to obtain a selenocarbamate in which the Se atom was directly attached to umbelliferone (replacing its 7-OH function) followed by hydrolysis to get diumbelliferyl diselenide, which was finally easily converted to the desired Se-geranyl derivative in quite a good overall yield (28.5%). The synthesized adduct displayed a greater antioxidant and a radical scavenger in vitro activity than parent auraptene. The procedure we describe herein, to the best of our knowledge for the first time in the literature, represents an easy-to-handle method for the synthesis of a wide array of seleno analogues of naturally occurring biologically active oxyprenylated secondary metabolites.

Abstract
Herein, we report that iron(II)/ammonium persulfate in aqueous acetonitrile mediates the Newman-Kwart rearrangement of O-aryl carbamothioates. Electron-rich substrates react rapidly under moderate heating to afford the rearranged products in excellent yields. The mild conditions, rapid reaction rates, and suitability for scale up offers immediate practical benefits to access functionalized thiophenols.

Abstract
Details of the electronic and geometric structures of stationary points along the reaction coordinate of the Newman Kwart rearrangement, which transforms an O-arylthiocarbamate into an S-arylcarbamothioate, are examined using quantum-chemical methods for a large number of compounds considering both the thermal reactions of uncharged substrates as well as the corresponding reactions of radical-cation substrates generated under photoredox conditions. The uncharged mechanism, which has intrinsically high 298 K free energies of activation (in excess of 30 kcal mol-1), has the character of nucleophilic aromatic substitution and is thus accelerated by electron-withdrawing substituents on the aromatic ring. The radical-cationic mechanism, by contrast, has 298 K free energies of activation that are typically below 20 kcal mol-1 and is accelerated by electron donating substituents on the aromatic ring, which stabilize the hole character that is transferred to this fragment from the thiocarbamate fragment as the reaction proceeds. Opportunities to further accelerate the radical-cation reaction are revealed by computational assessment of alternative amino groups for the thiocarbamate functionality.

Abstract
The thermally induced OBn → SBn and OBn → SeBn migration reactions facilitate the rearrangement of O-benzyl thio- and selenocarbamates [BnOC(═X)NMe2] (X = S or Se) into their corresponding S-benzyl thio- and Se-benzyl selenocarbamates [BnXC(═O)NMe2] (X = S or Se). A series of substituted O-benzyl thio- and selenocarbamates were synthesized and rearranged in good yields of 33-88%. The reaction rates are higher for substrates with electron-donating groups in the 2 or 4 position of the aromatic ring, but the rearrangement also proceeds with electron-withdrawing substituents. The rearrangement follows first-order reaction kinetics and proceeds via a tight ion pair intermediate consisting of the benzylic carbocation and the thio- or selenocarbamate moiety. Computational studies support these findings.

Abstract
The discovery that the Newman-Kwart rearrangement can be performed at room temperature by action of a simple and readily available oxidant, cerium ammonium nitrate, is described. The conditions give clean conversion when using electron-rich aromatic substrates, and the reactions are often quantitative. Computational studies support a reaction mechanism where the O-thiocarbamate is first oxidized to the radical cation, followed by nucleophilic attack by the ipso carbon of the aromatic system.
